Hey guys really enjoying playing my Warspite at the moment, which I have made a close range brawling secondary build with the following:

Equipment:

1. Main Armaments Modification 1,

2. Damage Control System Modification 1,

3. Aiming Systems Modification 1,

4. Damage Control System Modification 1.

Commander Skills (Bert Dunkirk):

Tier I = Priority Target,

Tier II = Master Marksman,

Tier III = Basic Fire Training,

Tier IV = Advanced Fire Training.

Signals:

Hotel Yankee (Ramming),

November Foxtrot (Consumables),

Zulu (Credits),

India Bravo Terrathree (Service costs),

Zulu Hotel (Commander XP),

Red Dragon (XP, Commander XP),

Dragon (Commander XP),

Hydra (XP, Commander XP, Free XP).

Camouflage:

Pi-Day (Commander XP).

In a 60,000 dmg game I am racking up 30,000-35,000 commander XP per battle.

However I was thinking about moving her over to a HE spam build like below:

Commander Skills (Bert Dunkirk):

Tier I = Priority Target,

Tier II = Master Marksman,

Tier III = Demolition Expert,

Tier IV = Inertia Fuse for HE Shells.

Signals:

India X-Ray (Fire chance),

Victor Lima (Fire chance),

Juliet Charlie (No detonation),

Zulu Hotel (Commander XP),

Red Dragon (XP, Commander XP),

Dragon (Commander XP),

Hydra (XP, Commander XP, Free XP).

What do you guys think is it worth trying out?

Demo Expert and IFHE are bull.sh.it - also Warspite is no HE spammer, regardless the build. Also, I would pick Fire Prevention and Camo Expert as 4-pointers, Superintendent as 3-pointer.

However: Poii

Warspite doesn't get the insane HE that the RN BB tech tree gets, and even if it did it wouldn't be worth dedicating a build to HE spam. Either keep what you have now or consider Concealment Expert as your fourth skill. The benefits of a full secondary build will be marginal due to the ship only being T6, but if you're currently enjoying it as a secondary build then by all means carry on with it. Avoid falling into the pitfall of considering the ship a flamethrower though, it's not.

Brawling is a dangerous thing in a Warspite as your gun traverse is slow, which means you can get caught in a tight spot rather often, even if you know what you are doing. Also I don't think spamming HE is the way forward as the Warspite's HE is nothing out of the ordinary. Use superior caliber and dispersion instead (read: use AP shells often).

For my Warspite I run a "survival" build I am quite fond of (Jack Dunkirk):

I. Expert Loader (luxury skill I know)

II. Jack of all trades, Expert Marksman

III. Basics of Survivability, Superintendant

IV. Fire Prevention, Advance Firing Training

1) Spotting Aircraft Modification 1

2) DCSM 1

3) ASM 1

4) SGM 2

If you want to take IFHE on a BB don't forget that great skills to take with it are:

  • Survivability Expert
    • More HP = better, right?
  • Expert Loader
    • Only the normal variety, because changing your shell type so quickly that enemy DD will manage to appear and disappear 3 times is gud
  • Emergency Takeoff
    • So you can launch your fighter / spotter while you're on fire
  • Air Supremacy
    • Have plane squad with 2 planes in the air not just 1
  • Smoke Screen Expert
    • When you use that DD smoke you want it to be bigger so it covers your ship properly
  • Expert Rear Gunner
    • Make your rear turrets better
      • Sadly enough doesn't affect Nelson, Izumo, Dunkerque and Richellieu as they have only front mounted turrets
  • Incoming Fire Alert
    • Nice to know when someone's shooting at you
      • If you commit to rather typical BB playstyle this will let you know of EVERYONE who's shooting you
  • Evasive Maneuver
    • You have a plane, why not buff it?
  • Last Stand
    • We all know how annoying it is to get your engine & rudder knocked out
  • RPF
    • That DD isn't going to locate himself, is he?

Feel free to try those, just be so kind and never end up on my team :cap_like:

I'm surprised that noone's mentioning it, but pretty much whatever the ship is Concealment Expert is the best 4p skill

Warspite has terrible turret traverse so it doesn't perform as well in a brawling situation.

Also in general, secondary builds for anything below tier 7 are pretty useless as they only get a 15% buff from manual secondaries and not 60%.

Warspite's not too bad in a brawl really. The turret traverse isn't as glacially slow as it used to be and the ship itself turns on an absolute dime. It doesn't really matter if it's the turrets doing the turning or the rudder, all that matters is that the guns are brought to bear on the target. Aiming with the hull is perfectly viable at range or in a brawl.

The secondary build isn't optimal, no, but I have very fond memories of my completely unbuffed Warspite secondaries swatting DDs like flies. Can't really blame someone for wanting to spec for them even if CE would be a better use of the four skill points.

It's not so bad in a brawl. The guns turns slow, but the ship itself turns well. And it's short and good at evading torps.

I think a full secondary build doesn't make sense, but I do enjoy running BFT+AFT+Secondary Mod 2. The secondaries aren't fantastic, but they're deceptively good. They're really accurate and face forward.

It's a really comfortable BB to play at any range. IMO the most fun BB in this game.

The method I use to choose skills and modules is this:-

Pencil and paper

Mark down each ship you play and each game mark what caused maximum damage to you. Adjust build and skills accordingly. Survival is everything. The longer you are in game, the shots you can get off.

Since the grand old lady is a premium, you should be training captains up in her, or using Jack or Bertram Dunkirk, gaining excess commander XP. But I do find the Dunkirk brothers are best in cruisers or destroyers.

Indeed, not only is her HE utter garbage, her AP is excellent, plus IFHE would be daft, her guns are big enough to pen if you insist on using the awful HE. Complete waste of 7 captain points on DE and IFHE.
