It helps on ships with higher AA range than air detection range, mostly DD and some cruisers.

most of the time in DDs your air detection is less than your AA range . so before an aircraft reaches your airdetection range to detect you , your AA opens fire on him and so you are detected !

That.

In slightly more detail:

Your base detectability for surface and air detection is just that, a basis. If you fire your mainguns, your surface detectability will extend to the same value as your maximum firing distance (and your air detectability also scales up by a proportional amount).

The same concept also applies to your AA guns, if they fire at an aircraft within range, the aircraft will in return also spot you (unless you're hidden in a smoke and someone else is spotting the aircraft for you, but for simplicity's sake let's ignore that for now).

On most DDs from the midtiers up, their longest range AA gun can fire out farther than your nominal air detectability (for DP guns typically 5km, whilst most DDs would otherwise only get detected by air at less than 4km). So when an aircraft enters your AA range at aforementioned 5km, your AA guns will always automatically start shooting, thus allowing the aircraft to spot you in return when it otherwise might've passed you far enough away to not spot you if your AA guns weren't shooting at it.

Note that being on fire increases both your surface and air detectability (iirc by a flat 1,9km).

Be aware that it also turns off your secondaries (if any) so you  won't be using those with that active either.

OP: if you haven't already found this stuff:

  • There's a little cogwheel icon top right of your mini-map: if you hold ctrl and click it, you'll get the option to display things like air detection range, and AA gun range on your mini-map - you may find this helps.
  • If you press and hold H in game, your ship's essential stats pop up - if your longest AA range is smaller than your AA detection range, you may as well leave AA switched on; if the reverse is true, you *may* want to switch it off (mainly if you're a DD).
  • If you're running DefAA (US DDs especially), activating that automatically turns your AA guns back on with a single click/key-press.
  • If you reactivate your AA guns, don't forget to switch them off again after they're no longer needed (I'm prone to forgetting).

Besides that, what others have already said.

I have mine bound to Z. Who wants to reach out to P under WASD controls? You have to get one hand off WASD or the mouse, it sucks. So does having a consumable bound to Y, so I replaced the ''hard port/starboard'' hotkeys with consumables.
