pifkaa Beta Tester 186 posts 2,087 battles Report post #1 Posted April 6, 2015 I belive every engine - like my car for instance - has at default certain power. But this power is provided on the basis of a calculation, that the engine will be able to provide that power for a long duration of time. So in every engine, there is a potential to increase that power (and decrease the time of its life-span) I see no reason why a big [edited]coal powered steam engine couldnt provide for a short amount of time a probably even significant power boost enabling faster acceleration and larger top speed.

SeGram Beta Tester 201 posts 1,920 battles Report post #5 Posted April 6, 2015 (edited) Good idea, there was something like that in NF. And you could train engineers to prolong the engine redlining time. Edited April 6, 2015 by SeGram

[OMPG] TohtoriP Beta Tester 408 posts 7,516 battles Report post #10 Posted April 8, 2015 In ships because of water resistance you cant really get large speed increases without significant horsepower increase. So overriding the governor so to speak, an engine could probably give you +20% power for a short time. That is not much considering for examle that BB Nelson 36,000tons had 45,000hp and could do 23knots and BB King George V at 40,000tons needed 110,000hp to do 28,5kts. Iowa at 57,000tons needed 212,000hp to do 32,5kts. The gains are pretty small comparing to actual neede power.

Hawkmoon230 Beta Tester 24 posts 11,554 battles Report post #13 Posted April 18, 2015 Also remember that screws have a maximum speed at which they can be turned and provide efficient thrust, if you spin them too fast they lose thrust and just push the water side ways.
