The Marasesti frigate was built in Mangalia Naval Yard between 1979 and 1985, and it is the largest warship ever built in Romania. It entered service with the navy in august 1985, being classified as helicopter carrier light-cruiser, with the name “Muntenia”. After 5 years, beginning with august 1990, it was reclassified as a destroyer and renamed “Marasesti”, after the Marasesti destroyer of WW2 which acted as a destroyer flotilla leader for the Royal Romanian Navy. Beginning with 1st of April 2001, the ship was reclassified as a frigate. The ship underwent 2 modernization programs trying to reduce its excessive topweight, but that problem has not entirely been solved.
