  1. Hi all, As it stands right now the return of the beloved PvE "Dynamo" and "Cherry Blossom" is postponed for time being... In latest Q&E by WG @Sub_Octavian posted as answer: Leo "Apollo11"

    Operation Dynamo

It was a very nice thing when I could play it again in a weekly operation turnover, months ago. Game admins, please can you consider to put it in a standard weekly just to have less boring, not always the same boring alternatives?
  3. Operation Dynamo was originally introduced in July 2017 as a promotional tie-in with Warner Brothers to promote Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk film, in version 0.6.8. Although 0.8.5 is the next version to be rolled out we know that a new line of tech tree French Destroyers is in supertesting right now, and potentially ready for general release in 0.8.6 around 25 July 2019. Two years after the original operation, and 0.8.6 has a pleasing symmetry with 0.6.8, don't you think? Plus the penultimate reward for completing the Operation was originally a 10-point French Commander, who would be a useful addition to new players to go with their new French Destroyers. The original iteration of this Operation gave players two new unique Tier 5 Destroyers: British Destroyer HMS Anthony and French Destroyer Cyclone, to be played exclusively in this Operation. Players also had a chance of obtaining for free the new Premium Tier 6 British Destroyer HMS Gallant, or purchasing from the Premium Shop, to use in the Operation. ORP Blyskawica was not allowed at that time, despite her historical participation, because she was Tier 7, and the Operation was mostly balanced for Tier 5. One of the balancing trade-offs was the Anthony had access to DefAA and Cyclone a Smoke Generator, both consumables to be used strategically when really needed. The second iteration of this Operation was re-introduced in version 0.7.9 for the Royal Navy event, timed for the release of the British Destroyers, including the Premium Tier 8 British Destroyer HMS Cossack. Like Gallant before her, Cossack would be allowed to participate in Operation Dynamo, which was otherwise restricted to Tier 6 and Tier 7 "Allied" Destroyers (including the "neutral" USA and the "with-friends-like-this..." USSR). During the PTS MrConway and Crysantos livestreamed a playthrough, using a full division of mostly heavily-armed Tier 7 Destroyers (HMS Jervis, ORP Blyskawica, 3x USN Mahans, Minsk, and Gnevny). Afterwards commenting that "I feel like one game of that was enough for now. It was fun. But I do think that we need to make it more difficult. So I'm going to add that to the feedback." That feedback resulted in buffing the HP of Schnellboots from 1500HP to 2700HP. Operation Dynamo, and many others, was discontinued in version 0.8.0 on 30 January 2019 because of the changes to aircraft carriers and AA, and the need to rework the AI for attacking aircraft. While it was available in rotation, and especially for farming divisions off-rotation, the Operation was insanely popular because of how easy it was to complete and rack up large amounts of silver and XP. Reasons for this include but are not limited to: XP for shooting down planes, motivating players to use full-AA ship specifications and captain skills. And boosted sales of USS Sims, easily the best choice for farming (guilty!) Intentionally provoking additional plane spawns by moving into the 9th column or straying too far from the convoy for the purpose of boosting earned XP. Although the AI was very aggressive and very accurate in dive-bombing offending players this was trivially countered by a smokescreen with a third-party spotting the aircraft now milling around the smoke cloud. Mostly static spawning points of Schnellboots, motivating players to race ahead to intercept to farm credits and achievements (Natural Selection, rewards extra XP). This carried no risk because: No real threat to Green AI convoy ships. The Green AI was very good at dodging incoming torpedoes. The random artillery shells were more directed at the players, and did little alpha damage. The ships had enough HP to survive dive-bombing attacks, and those that didn't were considered expendable as you could afford to lose 30% of the convoy (and 30% of the soldiers, tbh)for a 5 star win. Evacuating soldiers on player ships could be killed when taking damage, but were immune on convoy ships. There was no incentive to stay close and shepherd them home. XP and Credit rewards were disassociated from your proximity to the convoy. Trivially pathetic Red opposition. Despite buffing their HP the Schnellboots were still easy one-shot (full broadside) kills. Boosting their HP merely resulted in more damage dealt by players and greater silver rewards. They did not attempt to dodge torpedoes aimed in front of them and always sailed in predictable lines of attack. The torpedo bombers were ineffective XP pinatas because of excellent convoy dodging. The dive bombers could be quite effective but often not enough survived to drop and the bombs never did enough damage to one-shot kill big convoy ships. Considering WG concerns about the game economy I'm not surprised Dynamo was removed. I hope it is not permanent because the issues identified above can be addressed. It would be very timely to reintroduce the Operation to coincide the release of the French Destroyer line. The original iteration balanced for Tier 5 was obviously much better balanced because of the limited participants and the ease of calculating performance. I would not recommend re-introducing the Operation for T6/T7 as before, and certainly not to include US and USSR Destroyers. I would recommend including the Premium Tier 6 French Destroyer Aigle and the Premium Tier 6 British Destroyer Gallant (Aigle is available for cash, Coal, and Doubloons; Gallant is available for cash and Doubloons). Tier 6 would also be represented by the British Destroyer Icarus, another historical participant, and forthcoming French Destroyer Guépard. I would also make the case for allowing ORP Blyskawica as sole T7 because a) she participated, b) she's available for cash and Doubloons, and c) owners were moaning about her being power-creeped, this would give her something special to do. And if reintroducing the Operation happened to boost sales of any of those Premium ships then so much the better. Balancing Operation Dynamo around Tier 6 Destroyers with not very good AA would see Blyskawica becoming much sought-after for farming, having decent AA and great guns. Fix the unintended consequences of motivating selfish behaviour and it would be great again. Boost the number of attacking Schnellboots, and/or make them more evasive, nerf the credits rewards, remove XP earned on intentionally spawned aircraft, make the convoy ships more vulnerable and less agile (give us a reason to smoke for them). I would rather see Dynamo back in rotation with normalised rewards than never see it again. TL;DR bringing back Dynamo for introducing the French line of Destroyers would be very fitting, but needs some work to rebalance difficulty and rewards.

  6. Captains, To clear up confusion seen in many comments on the forums, here is a little cheat sheet for our Dunkirk missions and activities. You can of course find them also on the Portal. Note: To simplify, I give here last full day of the event as the end. Full duration includes also the little wee tail end of few hours of the last day (example: Weekend mission 1 starts on 21/07 at 7:00 CEST and ends on 24/07 at 07:00 CEST). Note: These missions do not give the Collection containers - instead you get consumables, flags and, of course, the spiffy Dunkerque skin. You can find detailed mission sets on the portal or in game. The Colors of Dunkerque: Restricted to Dunkerque (Tier VI Premium) Flower of Steel: Any ship of tiers VIII + X Now... Set sail and save the surrounded army! Action Stations!
  7. Greetings, seamen! We have to take out as many as of our lads and as fast as we can! I made that route for some times, so let me tell my tips to get survive there: 1. KEEP TOGETHER - never get separated from the fleet or enemy bombers and S-Boots will rip you apart 2. FOCUS AA - Use <Ctrl> + mouseclick to designate AA target 3. WATCH MINEFIELDS - those are nasty obstacles; if you get in it, try reverse; DO NOT TRY to SAVE those who are INSIDE a minefield 4. USE TORPS - do not fear to use torpedoes against S-boots, our ships are insensitive to them, there is no friendly fire 5. SAVE THE DROWNING EN ROUTE & NEVER TURN BACK - dont leave the convoys vicinity for a sank ship farther than 3-4km (see 1st point) 6. HELP RAF - if you can neutralize Luftwaffe fighters before they kill ours, they are a great help against enemy strike planes OUR GOALS: Primary: save 3000 soldier - thats easy if u play as a team, not as a band of "lone wolves" Secondary: - save 7000 soldier - dont lose more than 5-6 ships altogether; keep an eye on those fat n slow passanger liners, those carry the most evacuees - save 7 of the 10 civilian ships - just kill enemy S-boots and specially torpedo bombers in time - kill 25 S-boots - the easiest secondary obj.; they are quick and small, but need only 2 shots to kill - kill 8 fighter squadrons - that will need some cooperation! first 4 squadrons are spotters - they make 2 circles and go home, so be quick; the second 4 squads can be killed at the air battle. If u cant help the RAF there, you will fail this objective - kill 80 bombers - its much easier if during the air battle you kill as many Luftwaffe fighters as u can. RAF fighters make a great help in taking out enemy strike planes THE PLAN: 1. EMBARKATION Get into the circle and keep the speed under 10 knots to get the soldiers aboard. 2 fighter squadrons will come to spot, kill them fast to stop the costal artillery strikes. Its highly advised for Cyclone captains to make a smoke screen in the embarkation circle. 2. FIRST ENCOUNTERS As ships get filled 3 Stuka wave will come in 1/2/2+1 portions (the 3rd bomber of 3rd wave will turn back if it cant find a DD in its range). Defensive AA is usable in this stage, but not a must. Paralelly with 3rd bomber wave, the first S-boot wave arrive -> 2 from east, and 3 at the shore in a row. Torp strike against this S-boot row can be effective. 3. LETS GET START THE PARTY First, a fighter squad will come to spot. After, we got a 4-6 squadron Stuka raid and 2x3 S-boots from east. Finally, a spotter fighter again. In this stage, costal artillery can still shoot our ships, so making a smoke screen is very useful, especially for the end of the convoy! Anthony's captains can use Defensive AA against dive bombers, if they are in 2km. If any DD goes too far eastward from the convoy, that triggers some random encounters (see later.) 4. THE CHOKEPOINT As the convoy reaches this narrow passage, 4-6 torpedo bombers appear. They will attack the front of the convoy, so its better if at least 3+ DD is here to repell the attack. The hard part is that there is little place to maneuver, so easy to run into the mine field (civilan ships rather prone to do that). Defensive AA and smoke curtain are both very useful here. After the aerial torpedo attack, 2x2 S-Boots will attack the back of the convoy. They will approach paralel with the edge of the eastern minefield. (4*, see later) 5. TRAP + AIR BATTLE When the first ships reach the end of the passage, we get a nasty surprise: 2 waves of S-boots same time, different directions. They can come from north, north-east, or from WEST, on the edge of the minefield. Against the western wave, as they form a row, torp salvos can be useful. Meanwhile some RAF fighters arrives and fierce dogfight starts with Luftwaffe fighters. RAF planes are outgunned, so the more DD can help them, the best. The more the fighters remain alive, the easier to make the final stage. 6. FINALÉ Have u thought it was easy? Now you get the black soup. From the north/north-east, occasionally south-east S-boot will attack in multiple waves. They attack randomly the front, middle or the end of the convoy. Luftwaffe will be active also: torpbombers will form 2 columns both on side of the convoy, and try to make "torpedo-forks", Stukas will simultaniously attack fallbacks. To make their job harder, DDs have to take position on both side the convoy evenly for distributed AA. As u slow down under 10 knots in the end circle, disembarkation starts. ATTENTION! The operation is over when the saved soldiers number reaches 3000, till that, expect constant aerial and naval attacks! For the sec. obj. of saving 7000 soldier, you do not need to disembark them, only need to have 7000 aboard when counter reaches 3000! RANDOM ENCOUNTERS Most of the time, the attack waves are scripted, till you go spartan. If u detach from the convoy, Luftwaffe starts plus raids. Its a 2 Stuka + 1 torpedo bomber wave and repeating. Sometimes even the scripted waves can turn against a lone dd, if it wanders away from the convoy. Plus waves of S-boots are also an option, especially in the final stage. 4* - THE HIGHWAY TO HELL Its an alternative route for DDs to get around eastern minefield. For 1-2 DD, its a suicide, for 3-4 its viable. They have to be quick to help the convoy on the end of the passage + they will get the plus attacks from Luftwaffe. I saw nobody to use this route effectively. Maybe its a matter of tactic...

    Let's save Private Parks

Let's break the monotony of an usual daily run in Operation Dynamo with a funny "secondary" mission, let's save Private Parks. Many of you are probably wondering about the possibility of saving GOLIATH Parks from the MINELAYER red zone, some say it's impossible, others say it's doable, others say it's useless.. This post is to clarify all your doubts and the various phases required to save Private Parks (yes it can be saved) Let's see how. First of all, you have to check the distance between your warship and Parks: In Operation Dynamo all of the players starts in formation, the Pole position (the destroyer up on the left) is the best one for ramming Parks, as you won't be required any engine boost. If the distance is more than 2 km instead, it is suggested activating your speed boost, if you start from the last position (more than 3 km away) it becomes very hard to get Parks out of the danger zone (see below) since it will most likely scare off before entering the embarking zone. In our picture, the distance between our warship and Parks (he is the ship up on the right) is 2.1 km therefore a boost is suggested. The secondary operation starts. Once you are done in approaching Parks' Ship (the one on the right), you have to ram it in order to block his advance towards the battlefield (if you notice at start, Parks is the head of the Convoy). But beware: if you use too much speed you will surpass Parks and he will go on saying several sentences, if he does this, the operation is over for this round, as it will direct the GOLIATH into the MINELAYER red zone. On the other hand, if you use too few engine speed, he will surpass you, or slips away, with the abovementioned consequences, so you have to moderate your speed accordingly. For the ones of you using CYCLONE it is suggested to set a smoke screen, in order to prevent him to be seen by ground artillery: if Parks is not rammed and is close to the embarking zone, it will say his speech and the saving attempt ends, if Parks is rammed but is left alone and artillery hits him, or shoots too close to him, after few time he will, again, attempt to leave the battlefield for the MINELAYER zone. Remember: if Parks is not saying anything, despite its maneuvers, it is actively following you, and the rescue operation is being successful. Most likely Parks will be out of danger when the embarking circle disappears and your convoy is at several distance, provided it is not spotted by enemy aircraft and thus targeted by artillery fire.. Parks' ship will follow the convoy at a slow speed, usually being the last ship of the convoy (it's the green ship, right behind our Warship in the small picture below). If you manage to defend the whole convoy from aircrafts attacks, artillery fire, and SCHNELLBOOT raids, you will ultimately see Parks reaching the base in total safety, for the fun of everyone, congratulations! you managed to save Parks :)
HoppouChan

    Operation Dynamo - Guide

While testing new Operation Dynamo on the PTS I saw a lot of players struggling with it in different ways: from wrong build of the ship to loosing sight of your objectives to wrong positioning on the map. Thus I made a guide to Operation Dynamo (introduced with version 0.6.8) on Youtube: Following secondary tasks were changed after I made the video: - Save 7'000 Soldiers (was 6'000) - Save at least 7 civil ships (was 6) A nice change compared to the PTS: You get a 19 point commander on the live server for each ship. Some of the skills seem pre-chosen for you. You can still commit my recommended builds, though. AND: All commander XP earned in the operation is converted to Elite Commander XP => XP can be transferred to any commander. Very nice additional incentive to play the operation. Two weeks only! Then the ships will be gone.
