What Were Your Greatest Gaming Achievements Today ?

I played a cruiser, Atago, and lost (time ran out while we were behind on points). Normally, I'm bad in cruisers. But here, I got more base XP by a comfortable margin than the player placed first(!) on the winning team. Regards, Nightowl -
Oh, that's a funny point. I actually do have the combos "Jean Bart B with Bourgogne" and "Georgia with Ohio", with the Bourgogne and the Georgia bought first, respectively. I like all four vessels. I see some merits in having both JB and Bourgogne. let's have a look on them - here's my personal comparison. True, their artillery is made of the same guns, but the Bourgogne has 4 more of them. That may augment the broadside weight ion a useful manner in times of need. My own ships sport a 23 seconds reload (JB) vs. 25 (Bourgogne), though, all modules and commander skills taken together (I'm actually using the same Honoré guy on both). I made the impression that 69k HP on T9 for the JB is a bit more on the low side than the 74,7k HP for the Bourgogne on T10 is - the latter feels a tad more survivable and durable under fire. Both can by thrown around due to the motor boost. Albeit I think that the Bourgogne is again a bit more suited for a dynamic play stile. Some forumite put it nicely: "The Bouurgogne is the best cruiser around here". Playing them for a long time in a match as cruising HE slingers works quite well, especially as these shells wither down the secondaries, other modules (and often also the HP by burning them away) of your foes. Last but not least: the tier difference offers the opportunity to play ships with similar abilities in different modes that may be tier restricted like Ranked or CB. For the time being, I'm a bit more confident in my gameplay when driving the Bourgogne. But I do not want to miss the Jean Bart, as it is a historical ship. Whereas I can easily understand that Jean Bart and Bourgogne are seen as relatives, I cannot agree on this for the pair Georgia-Ohio. Again, my personal views on the subject. The Georgia pulls its uniqueness out of its healing abilities (fast reloading consumable) and its motor boost. Staying at more than 30kn while manoeuvring or at 38kn in a straight line is something that you need to get accustomed to, but if that is given, you're commanding a really decent tactical flexibility. Only the guns are making any relation to the Ohio. In fact, the latter is more of a 18 inch gunned Montana than a relative to the Georgia. A maybe relevant difference is the 2 seconds difference in the reload between Georgia (26s) and the Ohio (28s). The same reasoning about tiers applies also. As a first steelship, I am glad that I've chosen the Bourgogne. Regards, Nightowl

I wonder how many players went for both ships (Dido and Canarias) when they first got released. Besides myself, I know of a fellow clan member who have also both of them already. I'm using the IMHO rather good looking Canarias every now and then in Coop, more often than the Dido, as I don't fancy much taking cruisers to Randoms. Back at the time of their first release, I did not take the firepower crate as I didn't fancy to gamble on a Forrest Sherman, so I rather took both historical ships... Well that means now a bit of credits. Regards, Nightowl

For finishing the 28 million pot. damage mission, you have a decent choice between the current brawl (use Ägir, if available) and Coop. For the latter, any fast cruiser, preferentially with a heal or a tanky one (Napoli, Stalingrad), will do. In Coop, try to entice the bots in shooting at you (shoot early, make yourself spotted), they will miss most of the time anyway. You should /could be done with 28 mio. in roundabout 35-40 Coop battles. Regards, Nightowl

Stemming from personal experience, and without having played all tech tree ships, I will nevertheless still name some vessels (from T5 upwards, as collecting the highest number of rewards in missions in my available playing time precludes me from playing something below T4 with the rare exception of a division game in Clemson). T5 - any cruiser, maybe Kotowsky, the PA vessel or Agano (as Yahagi feels simply better) due to a lack of staying power T6 - any cruiser, maybe Dallas or the PA vessel due to a perceived lack of fire and staying power. The Weser also as I can't use it when uptiered. T7 - Dunno, as I didn't play much cruisers on this tier. Eendracht or Shchors may be my own pick here. T8 - Kansas. T9 - Easy. Come back to me when you've finished decent marks in gunnery school, Friedrich der Große. You can't call yourself Battleship or Capital ship when you're not able to hit a barndoor at 8km. And please take your friend Izumo with you. T10 - Großer Kurfürst, assuming it had kept its tech tree place, same issues as with the FdG. Regards, Nightowl

Resources for ships, lists or armoury filters
Northern_Nightowl posted a topic in General Discussion
Hello, each time I'm considering buying a non-techtree ship, I'm confronted with the problem of not knowing if any particular ship is available for different currencies. Of course, I know that vessels like a Groningen can be unlocked for 1.000.000 FXP - but also bought for IIRC 19300 doubloons. Or an Iwami, that is an actual coal ship, but also available for gold. And this is exactly my main issue, making me refrain from spending. Does somebody know about a compilation of the currently available premium ships, listed with their currencies? Or is there any trick to filter out ships in the armoury that are available for different currencies? Or: is there any list known about ships that are exclusively available for doubloons? I do not want to expend doubloons or cash on stuff that I could actually grind on a regular base , be it coal, steel or RB points. On the other hand, I may be enticed in buying if there's a decent offering for historical or good ships, but I do not want to feel deceived, a feeling which would occur if a doubloon purchase turns out to be e.g. a coal ship. Aby hints or knowledge is appreciated. Regards, Nightowl -
Is Kidd among the top 3 in T8 DDs (competitive mode)?
Northern_Nightowl replied to luokailk's topic in General Discussion
When, as to be expected, both the HSF Harekaze and the Asashio are fully rigged for maximum concealment, they have AFAIK the lowest value in-game, with both at 5,4km. That's 100 meters less than Cossack can have, but IMHO tactically irrelevant (I can't think of a way to use these 100m to play an outspotting game, as the distance is equal or less than your hull length. 1/10th of a second late in turning or a surprising wiggle by your opponent, and you'll get seen. The Harekaze is a nice little ship. And it provides cat content for WoWS (Isoroku camo). xD Regards, Nightowl -
How many Premium ships do you own
Northern_Nightowl replied to pzkpfwv1d's topic in General Discussion
65 premiums (including coal, FXP, steel and RB ships) among a total fleet at the time of writing of 191 ships (and some 73 ships researched but not bought, mostly low tiers between 2 and 4, but also a few in T5, T6 and T9, plus 4 superships that are unlocked). Most of these premiums were mission rewards, a few came as drops from crates and also a few were actually bought (3 dockyards, 3 or 4 straight purchases, some gotten with doubloons courtesy of supercontainers or cashback). Inconsistent progression along certain BBs.
Northern_Nightowl replied to Animalul2012's topic in General Discussion
But what are those strengths? I never saw those on FdG or Izumo, and by the time I'm playing now, I should be able to at least get a glimpse on the theory and the "how to" with a ship, even if I'm failing at the practice. Please allow me to disagree... This is backed by my statistics. On a lot of those BB in which I'm feeling confident about my ability to contribute meaningfully, I do have a main gun hit rate above the one on Izumo (e.g. Montana and Bourgogne being exceptions). To be concise about what those BB are, I'll name them in the following spoiler. I always do put a premium on main gunnery performance, be it precision/dispersion reduction or, as secondary asset, turret rotation when deciding what modules and commander skills will be chosen. This will show for a comparability between the data sets. Izumo (45 games, ~12 points commander): Iowa (69 games, commander was/is between ~14 and 17 points): Georgia (91 games, mostly no less than 12 skill points and used as commander trainer): Richelieu (58 games, commander with 8-12 points): Nelson (15 games, mostly no less than 10-12 skill points): Friedrich der Große (16 games, 10-11 skill points): Bismarck (51 games, ~8-14 skill points): Bayern (46 games, played mostly below 10 points): So, I'd draw the conclusion that the Izumo at best sits in the middle of the pack (maybe a bit towards the top) when we're talking about precision, as several other BB, even non-American ones and hence without the artillery plotter room modules fare better in my hands precision-wise. These hands tend to mostly use a BB at mid- to long range (~0,5 to ~0,8 times the maximum gun range of the vessel and preferably with a margin of minimum 1,5km to the detection range) and always looking for the most precise gunnery possible - as long as I do not lose my situation awareness, which sadly still happens too often. My USS Iowa would like to have a word with you about this opinion. And as you're generalising a bit, USS Fletcher, Yūgumo, Kitakaze and HMS Jutland too. Albeit the Friedrich der Große and Izumo indeed shall go back to gunnery school and learn the basics of precision... Regards, Nightowl -

I just got myself an Ohio as first RB ship, having a liking for the Montana, Iowa and Georgia. Took it in a Random. Conclusion: her guns are like guns should be. They hit where they were aimed to and should hit (screw yourself, Friedrich der Große!), well, I still need a bit of adjustment to make them hit a ship and not only the water (did not score really well). Got a Dreadnought on the way. Regards, Nightowl -

Salutations, ----- In case that you didn't see it, here's the link to the French speaking community: [link] You see, every other language save English is basically forbidden in this section. About your question, there's the urgent recommendation to try out at first the tech-tree carriers, the Japanese and Americans may well serve to learn the basics of CV play and the employment of the armaments. In my opinion, especially the crosshair is needed to get accustomed to, all the more if you have a previous experience with combat flight simulation software. Regards, Nightowl

I have both of them, actually using and training the same commander on both ships. I bought the Bourgogne as my first steel vessel, as no other option attracted me sufficiently, especially due to their lack of survivability and durability. After I read information about the Bourgogne on the WoWS wiki and in some relevant forum threads here, I decided for myself that I should play this ship as if it were a cruiser. That means zooming around the map (while staying at 16km to 23km distance from the visible foes); I'm using HE shells quite a lot. While you have a nearly decent stash of HP and hence an already BB-like grade of survivability, you're not durable enough to withstand a continued hammering by something like a Montana, Yamato, Kremlin or a Großer Kurfürst (the latter especially when it's close enough to alleviate its bad main gunnery patterns). Using HE to whittle a foe down with fire and destroyed secondary artillery and AA mounts and using your speed (that can be boosted), only switching to AP for flashing broadsides (with a handy reload booster for this) works quite well. Remember: 38cm guns may lack a bit in AP power at T10, but 38cm shells filled with high explosives carry a decent fire setting power downrange. And you have at least 8 of them available at your front, 12 in total. Before I got my own Jean Bart (this year's black version), I observed other players using it. That was mostly a bowtanking situation and a jigging back-and-forth with motorboost on. Quite difficult to deal with when you were against it, as you'll need a flanking manoeuvre for better damage numbers. A swift DD or a boosted Georgia could pull this off, but otherwise, it's a battle of who's suffering attrition quicker to determine the winner of the engagement. Maybe, I'm not having enough map knowledge, as this rather static style didn't work for me. So, I began to move my Jean Bart a bit more around in battles, trying to play the way I'm doing with my Bourgogne, as it is similarly equipped (save for the abysmally short ranged - 5km - and lowly loaded ASW airstrike on JB). I'm performing better now, even if I'm switching to bowtanking when it looks like the sensible thing to do. A subjective comparison would yield that the Bourgogne feels more well-rounded and a bit more powerful for me, but you can use both ships similarly. I do also still have a strong liking for the Jean Bart and the other front-gunned Frenchy BB (Dunkerque, Strasbourg, Richelieu) having all of them in port. You can't IMHO get wrong with a Bourgogne. As for T10 coal vessel, I can't provide any decent opinion or advice. While I have a Großer Kurfürst and a Napoli, both of them are actual port queens. I'm in no way a decent cruiser player and the lack of hydro or any other vision control tool among the Italians is a showstopper. And this damned German steel brick is only good to get barbecued or pounded as any heavyweight boxer that missed the age and moment of retirement and climbs back into a ring will get. I'm assuming that managing with "classic" DD will build up a solid knowledge base upon which variants can be mounted. The way "classics" aka torpedo boats as basics and then specialities as radar DD or smoke farmers is easier to learn and assimilate than the other way round, I think. Remember, the TO wrote about wanting to learn from scratch! Am I wrong in thinking that gunboating or radar usage is figuratively as far from "DD's first steps" as a SAT / Abitur / Baccalauréat / A-level is from the primary school classes? Regards, Nightowl
-
The TO wrote: So I assume that he is a player without any destroyer captains and without previous DD experience. So, I thought about ship lines that neither have a (own opinion) steep learning curve and neither need a high point captain to perform satisfactorily and that are able to provide a DD compatible mindset, as asked (cf. "learning from scratch"). Then, you wrote: So, let me ask: what is "being good in DD" for you? Cap contesting to assist in winning? Spotting in order to do team work? Something else, like assaulting solo targets? Let assume that you'll have 3 ships at your disposal, Nicholas, T-22 and Minekaze or Mutsuki. For the sake of argument, let us assume a T5 brawl on Ocean at 1 vs. 1. There, I think that the Nicholas, being outspotted by the other ships, is at a disadvantage. The German and the Japanese can simply stay outside of their detection ranges and use torpedoes. Using islands for ambushes, needed for Nicholas, is IMHO a skill that's to be separated from DD gameplay, as you need it also in CL and radar ships. It entails some understanding of probable movements of your foes. Learning is really possibly easier when you're able to divide needed knowledge in smaller parts that are better for you to assimilate. For DD, that would be positioning, knowledge of spotting/detection ranges of your adversaries, the psychology of enemy's reaction to your presence and available allied and enemy gimmicks (hydro, radar, RPF skill). Back to the TO's question. For learning gimmicks, there are mods easily available (e.g. Aslain pack, ship symbols with hydro and radar identifiers). These mods also provide you with dynamic sights and an information display of "target speed at the crosshair" that makes the need to train how to lead the arcing slow US shells somewhat moot. I then still maintain that the IJN line is something good to learn general DD gameplay: reconnaissance, keeping target spotted for allies, capping. The ships will work also with a low pointer for commander and still provide you with learnable feedback, out of their virtue of good stealth, fragility (don't get shot at!) and potent torpedoes. They will teach you positioning and "red" psychology, that's to say how to aim into turning ships to get hits, because you'll get the knack to estimate your torpedo trajectory without relying too heavily on the aiming indicator and catch a guy that was turning. At the same time, you more often than not have the chance to learn and train for a longer time as you're not sunk outright in your US DD that was seen from afar. When you have acquired such a mindset of staying stealthy, spotting, attacking with torpedoes and a knowledge what your foes do have for gimmicks, you may modify it according to the ship you'll drive at the moment. Remember, a single torpedo makes roundabout 5k to 15k damage on a ship (lower number: EU and Italian fishes, higher number: IJN). To get the same amount of damage with destroyer shells, you need at least 15 penetrating(!) HE hits to get where a torpedo or Europeans make gets you single handedly, accordingly more to get the equivalent of an IJN fish hit. So, gunnery oriented DD indeed need a modification of your torpedo oriented gameplay, but I'd say that the way from stealthy torpedo work towards gun usages is easier than the other way round. This is why I still have issues with those recommendations of US, EU, RN and Pan-Asia ships for learning DD work. Most importantly, neither may do well with any commander below 10 points, as the skill "Concealment expert" will surely be mandatory, to enhance the ability to disengage. - US DD: while, according to our WoWS wiki, they are on the rather sturdy side for DD as they are said to have more HP than other ships of equivalent tier, they suffer from imperatively being seen while attacking (gun bloom and short ranged torpedoes). Trying to learn something on them is likely to be frustrating. - EU DD: they do not have smoke, so you can only use your speed boost to disengage when needed. Their heal, while being the speciality of EU ships, is not to be relied upon when learning DD work, it's not enough to remedy to your inevitable mistakes. Furthermore, the guns are not the most potent out there and torpedoes are lacking in numbers (few tubes) and potency. They are fast, though. (Personal opinion: I want to like these ships, but they do not make it easy for me. While I indeed managed one of my few Krakens in a T6 Västerås, by getting lucky in hitting ships that were engaged by several allies also, my own norm is something like 0 or 1 kill and less than 20k damage, even in T9 Östergötland with a 14 pointer, which is normally regarded as one of the stronger tech tree DD). - RN DD: they could be in theory a great learning mount, as they are equipped with nice tools: potent torpedoes, potent guns, hydro later on and "getaway smokes" (short acting but fast reloading and more available). But they are IMHO neutered as teachers because their torpedoes have abysmal long reloading times (roundabout 1,5 to 2 times the IJN and US times) and they are lacking speed (no speed boost) to disengage when you as DD student did put yourself in a bad posture and need escaping. The premium (48.000 coal) T6 Gallant that I named previously as learning tool may address some of these shortcomings. - Pan-Asia DD: they are IMHO too much of a Potpourri to make for a good learning line. T5 and T6 are ships with Russian flavour, T7 is something with a British touch, but for the better. You should maybe better look at them when you feel confident about DD work. That said, the Gadjah Mahda (T7) made itself one of my favourite DD, it's nimble and stealthy, the 360° rotatable turret makes for pleasant gunnery in fights versus other DD, the deep-water torpedoes (only able to hit ships in cruiser size upwards, no DD) are good. I already said why I think of the IJN lines as good tools for learning DD "from scratch". You may note that I didn't comment on another line, the German DD line leading to the Z-52. These ships are middle of the pack or a bit worse than other DD in most single aspects: guns, torpedoes, stealth, manoeuvrability. But the combination of this "underwhelmingness" IMHO makes for them being good tools for learning. You're not getting used to superior characteristics and you learn how to cope with mediocrity. These ships are also on the sturdier side in their tier lineups, they can use their torpedoes from stealth (said torpedoes are also neither remarkably fast nor slow, neither high damaging nor simple stings and neither plentiful nor scarce or fast nor slow loading), they have hydro to raise your awareness about the enemy's whereabouts around islands and in smoke clouds, they have speed boosts and smokes that can be used for escaping and farming from within the cloud. They are not particularly nimble, so you're forced to train your situational awareness too. I also maintain that the learning curve in IJN and German DD could be felt as being not as steep as with other lines, so there should be less of a frustration potential than with, especially, the US line. All of the above stems from my own gameplay experiences in DD. I do have the US DD up to the Gearing, with my torpedo skilled Fletcher is also one of my favourite DD to drive. I grinded the RN DD up to the Daring, where Lightning, Jutland and Daring, and to a lesser degree, Jervis, are enjoyable (as long as those are captained with at least a 10 pointer). I take the "classic" Germans (where I also have the Z-52) out sometimes, but they more often than not lose the contest to the IJN, where I grew a strong liking for the Shimakaze. Regards, Nightowl
-
I do not quite get the catch why everyone is telling that the USN DD line is good for learning destroyer work. I also followed this thinking, but failed, not getting the way to employ my armaments effectively. The concealment, larger than your torpedo range, hampered me too much. To learn the basics of "Destroyer", I'd say that nothing is better than the IJN ships, followed by the German ones. To adapt to destroyer hunters, which is a likely role for Black and Groningen, the Germans may be a bit better due to their guns. For me, I got more confident in DD only after I began playing the IJN ships (especially the HSF Harekaze, on which I developed my liking for torpedo boats and most of my DD skills, I'd assess those as being of as "medium quality"). The RN ships? On T5 and T6: not enjoyable. T7 Jervis is better, but you'll have to wisely judge when to use torpedoes, as those still feel painfully short ranged (albeit with a swimming capability that outreach your concealment, at least). If you're ready to use resources for Premiums, I'd think than the T6 Gallant (RN, recommendation for gunnery, torpedoes and smoke usage) and the T7 Sims (USN, recommendation due to torpedoes that may feel similar to the Black mounted weapons) may pave a good way for you to get used to your T9 ships.
