what is the point of the question at the end of the battle
Northern_Nightowl replied to HMS_Britannia's topic in General Discussion
I sometimes like this question, because whenever I get it after a battle that made me play in a +/- 2 tier difference, I check "extremely unhappy", notwithstanding whether I was low, mid or upper tier or whether my team lost or won. Regards, Nightowl -
What Were Your Greatest Gaming Achievements Today ?
Northern_Nightowl replied to Hanszeehock's topic in General Discussion
I only seldom, if at all, get THREE heroic achievements in a single battle: It looks like I found my mount to go in the current Ranked season - Jean Bart, it is. Regards, Nightowl -
This actually kind of looks like a sibling to the BDA and tactics corner. Regards, Nightowl

@SengokuDaimyou is just driving on my port side in his Rooke. We're enjoying a Coop game (I'm actually fiddling around with the placement of a GUI element from a mod). Regards, Nightowl -
How Can I Improve Myself As A BB Main
Northern_Nightowl replied to Hextagon's topic in General Discussion
As a follow-on, @Hextagon with possibly a better illustration of the dynamic sight. This screenshot shows the situation just before I shot at the Minekaze (in Coop): Crosshair, bottom left: ALT is pressed, so here is the indication of the current shell flight time (to reach the point 5,36km distant that will be at the DD's waterline). Bottom right, you see again the target's maximum speed and also the distance to the point at the sea surface you're aiming at). As I saw that the Minekaze did some turns a few seconds ago, he's not at max speed, but most likely closer to 30-33kn if at all. Hence, I'm aiming with the 2 line of my reticle, assuming that the shells will impact somewhere on the ship parts now visible between the mark of the 2 and the one of the 3 (those pointing upwards). And: They did. You will likely improve your gunnery with this kind of aiming help. Regards, Nightowl -
How Can I Improve Myself As A BB Main
Northern_Nightowl replied to Hextagon's topic in General Discussion
Well said! In a BB (a type that I also enjoy, as long as the main guns are sufficiently accurate), you command over the highest firepower available in a single hull. Did you take a look as those tips that the game offer? For BB, the tooltip is saying: "Combat enemy ships with your main battery" (and for e.g. DD: "Assist allies with smoke screens, spot and do torpedo attacks" or something along those lines, I translated the German tooltips from memory). This is exactly a good basic thing. Learn which loss of what kind of units does give the most impact - that would be those with the hightest spotting ability: CV, DD, submarines. Engage them as soon as it's possible and sensible enough! Do not be afraid of shooting at a destroyer in your BB, even if you have AP munition loaded! Every hit on a DD counts, as only a few have healing possibilities. You may want to use a dynamic crosshair (e.g. the Nomogram mods found in the Aslain modpack), as these make leading the shots easier - as long as you're aware of the target's possible speeds. This speed and the shell flight time as indicated at your crosshair makes the computing of a firing solution quite easy. As a rule of thumb for speeds (exceptions apply): destroyer: roundabout underway with 33 to 36kn cruisers: 30-35kn BB: 25-32kn Here is a screenshot for the purpose of illustrating this tool: The Iowa clocks in at 29 knots (look at the number bottom right to the crosshair's center). So, assuming that he travels quite broadside to you, you have to take a look at the shell travel times, press ALT if it's not already displayed (the closer, the shorter. At 12-16km, you're most often in the range of 8-14 seconds flight time). Now, the crucial point: take the number of digits of this value of seconds and aim with the according number of your crosshair in front of the ship, taking care of his movement direction! In this example picture, the Iowa is quite close, so my shells won't fly longer than 2 or 3 seconds. Assuming that it's 3 seconds, they will impact right under the aft smokestack, as this is where the 3 on the 30-knot-aiming line is placed. Ah, this particular crosshair (Nomogram Stiv372) has 2 aiming guides. The upper line has a computation for 30kn targets. The ticks towards the bottom mark the aiming help for 20kn targets (useful e.g. when engaging US standard BB: New York, New Mex, Colorado...) I hope that this is understandable. Regards, Nightowl -

Northern_Nightowl replied to Cobra6's topic in General Discussion
I'm just coming out of a battle that had some notable points. We were live on Twitch, courtesy of @Killerbin34. I saw that @tocqueville8 was on the opposing team (sadly, only in the battle result screen, otherwise, I'd have greeted him). And personally, I managed to finish the grind up to the Petropavlovsk. Regards, Nightowl -
WTF? What did you smoke? In no possible or imaginable ways is the NorthCal a sniper. It's dispersion at every range is way too high for this moniker. The best you may call her is "battle rifle" to make a difference in the shotguns out there (Lyon, Friedrich der Große, Italians); her gunnery is in now way outstanding accuracy-wise. I'd rank it comparable to Amagi, Nagato, Alabama and a tad worse than Iowa and Lion. I'm fact, there are only 2 BB that I know who can be touted as sniper: Georgia and Monarch (I have a main battery hit rate on both between 35 and 37%, numbers which are the best among the BB I own). It's common to hit with more than half of the shells of a salvo when you're fighting at up to 18km. But you're absolutely right in saying this: Regards, Nightowl

Is this the final curtain for Mashum?
Northern_Nightowl replied to Migantium_Mashum's topic in General Discussion
Of course, I wish you the best as surely most other community member does. But: mind sharing some more details as you see fit? I know that I may (or rather: will) sound rude. But even with neoplasms localized in the brain, there are types that are more or less inevitably fatal (e.g. a glioblastoma as seen in the late US Sen. John McCain) and types that are more benign, like a non-malignant type growing from the meninges. I'm not asking out of pure curiosity, as it could be possibly sensible to navigate around some subjects or refrain from some (not actually imagined at the moment) ways of and content to communicate (e.g. puns, wordplays or the like). I'm a bit at a loss on how to deal with this (while I did have acquaintances with this kind of disease, this dates back in my child days, and brain neoplasms in children are often different from those in adults), do you have the energy and will to tell us rather anonymous crowd on how we shall behave with you? Kind regards, Nightowl -
Super Container Loot Thread [ topics merged ]
Northern_Nightowl replied to ThePurpleSmurf's topic in General Discussion
I earned a supercontainer due to having collected more than 400 of these easter tokens. It turned out to hold: Regards, Nightowl -
3 crates bought, that's also the maximum I'll take (tokens are expended after getting Mathilda), and I got 2 blue bonus sets and - a ship that I indeed wanted: I actually hoped for either Kaga, Hornet, Béarn or Aquila, mostly for collection and fun purposes. So: thank you RNG. Regards, Nightowl

Side panels and minimap: WG, WTF?
Northern_Nightowl replied to Andunedhel_GC's topic in General Discussion
Sorry, what's this fairy tale? You do not need a torrent client at all to download the Aslain pack. The actual torrent link that is also available is indeed given in a smaller font than the plain classic link (this screenshot is some weeks old, but as of today, the page layout is unchanged): Regards, Nightowl -
Hello, if you do care about some reasonings behind measures about your account by the WG staff, there could be a way to get some intel about this. It needs you to be a resident of a country of the European Union, to which the General Data Protection Regulation applies. Under this law, you're entitled to receive a copy of all data that are stored about you by any data processing entity headquartered in the EU, Art. 15, " Right of access by the data subject ". As Cyprus, location of WG's headquarters, is a European Union member state, the company is bound to the GDPR. Furthermore, if the reply is not prompt or complete enough, there's court legislation (IIRC by the German Bundesarbeitsgericht, the highest court about working related matters, only second to the Constitutional Court / Bundesverfassungsgericht and likely the European Court of Justice) that entitles a plaintiff to indemnities designed to be a deterrence (cf. Art. 82 GDPR) against the ignorance of GDPR regulations. By any means, you should be able to glean information about chatbans this way, and normally without any disadvantages to your own account, as using benefits of our laws cannot be used detrimentally to someone. Regards, Nightowl

[POLL] Are you playing "Trouble in the Hot Tub"? How do you like it?
Northern_Nightowl replied to Leo_Apollo11's topic in General Discussion
"Trouble in the hot tub" nearly made my wife entering this game too, after seeing me play it today. I guess that she'll join if this ever becomes permanent... Regards, Nightowl -
Hello! In the news on update 12.2, there's a part about balance changes, where I read this: WTF??! Is there any possibility to get more in-depth information about the reasoning behind this change, like the statistics used? @Seraphice et al.? I simply cannot understand it. This ship has a main battery of 305mm guns, same calibre as e.g. on Ägir, Alaska and Puerto Rico. All of those have less than 25 seconds of reload time. It's in a matchmaking spread where you may use and encounter, apart from the aforementioned cruisers, Strasbourgs (25s, 330mm guns), Bismarcks (26s, 380mm guns), Monarchs (25s, 380mm guns) and Lions (29s, 419mm guns). So, basically, you have a super heavy cruiser (by gun calibre) who reload his guns in more time than ships that are both more sturdy, heavier armed and faster in reloading their armament. The Britons (Monarch and Lion) are also as discreet as or stealthier than Cherbourg. If I expected any change, that would have been a lowering of the reload time, not an increase. Searching for answers or any enlightment and with regards, Nightowl

Idea: Soviet CV Line - Helicopter Carriers
Northern_Nightowl replied to 1MajorKoenig's topic in General Discussion
If helicopters are to be introduced (I think that they should be especially viable as ASW tool) the balance with and against AA is possibly quite easy. Similar of how currently long, mid and short range bubbles are coded, an engagement altitude may be used. Planes are higher up and more subject to flak, while helicopters may potentially fly a rather sea skimming path. If some kind of altitude control is left in player's hands, the damage incurred can be a simple linear relation to the flown altitude: the lower, the better. But a CFIT shall be deadly, too. West Virginia 1944 is going to be a great pick
Northern_Nightowl replied to Port_Authority's topic in General Discussion
Uh, my Warspite and her battlecruiser contemporaries would like to disagree. Their gunnery is decent, too, with the likes of a battle rifle or designated marksman rifle (as actually every BB touted as sniper IMHO is. A Slava, Incomparable, Georgia, Monarch or Yamato are more similar to a Dragunov weapon or the Heckler & Koch G3 than to some .338 Lapua AVM gun - Counter Strike players may recognize the latter moniker). Regards, Nightowl -
Hello, I have a need for knowledge about the special commanders that one can own. That's why I'd like to inquire about good ways to use them, so to say: what tech tree lines are well suited for them. At the time of writing, I do own a Halsey with 21 skill points - but still only trained for the Erie, as I simply do not know on what tech tree ship or line I should assign him. Let's go with a poll! For every special or legendary commander, I wrote a section with each tech tree line available for the respective nations. Please click on the option that you see the most fitting for each commander. This way, we can get a picture on the community's favourite mounts for the special guys. Regards, Nightowl

Special commanders and their skills

The interim results show, among others, that special IJN guys don't set their feet in cruisers... Funny. Maybe there's more to be known? Regards, Nightowl -
Small "trick" how to get 2900 for "free"
Northern_Nightowl replied to Wulf_Ace's topic in General Discussion
There's a small thingy that is still kind of irritating or kind or eyesore with your thread. The title is rendered as that looked dubious to me, as I couldn't put this together with your apparent English communication skills. It occurred to me only recently that it isn't a true typing error and that the I is not to be read as the personal pronoun but as the cipher "one"... Mind fixing it to the real number 1 or replacing it with the word One? Regards, Nightowl -
Special commanders and their skills
Northern_Nightowl replied to Northern_Nightowl's topic in General Discussion
No, I deliberately omitted him as there's no tech tree line besides the European destroyers. So, if you have him, you do not have any choices to make. The other European ship (discounting T1 Gryf...) is a premium, so using him on Viribus Unitis doesn't hamper his tech tree utility. That should be fixed now, I added the option "Commander not assigned or owned". Regards, Nightowl -
Special commanders and their skills
Northern_Nightowl replied to Northern_Nightowl's topic in General Discussion
My idea was, in fact, to get a picture of general ideas about their (the commander's) usage by virtue of cumulative votes. So, if there's a total of at least 10-20 respondents, we'll see a distribution of these votes. That won't be a clear-cut black-and-white picture, but I hope that I can see that e.g. the majority will put a Lütjens on battleships and a Sansonetti on cruisers (I do not own neither, but when the time will come, I'll have some ideas about their employment). There's absolutely no need to give a vote on every bullet point, as long as you're willing to cast at least one, it'll be helpful. Regards, Nightowl -
Why ALWAYS the game selects the wrong turret??
Northern_Nightowl replied to Andrewbassg's topic in General Discussion
And here I thought that you were writing about a true issue... That is, to name it: no awareness by the game engine whether a particular turret is masked by terrain. As we get forced to play similar to stationary AFV on land with "duck and cover", island hugging, camping, the virtual gunnery officers should be aware of terrain features that may mask parts of our armament and thus shoot only unmasked guns to avoid blasting shells into rocks. The current contrary is indeed "Why does the game always select wrong turrets". Regards, Nightowl -

Northern_Nightowl replied to Cobra6's topic in General Discussion
Huh, that's funny, I felt myself way busier with the Marlborough and Montana that were on the flank, while you were more around the middle... I only launched IIRC 3 or 4 gun salvoes and 2 or 3 plane squadrons towards your Zieten. Interesting how the same game feels different for different people. The mod for the "green kilometer stuff", so to say vision control ranges is something coming from the Aslain mod pack, "Radio and hydro contour icons" by "Poseidon_Brazil". Regards, Nightowl -

I had the mood to give my yet unplayed Nebraska a small tour on WoWS waters. There, I met @TheNubination . I greeted him with a five bomb firework, but that was not a really intensive display... Regards, Nightowl
