I have an idea on my mind. Why do not add an option to skip something unwanted? Let's say that player John chose a slow fat US BB (eg. New York) and enters random queue. He then gets the announcement that the upcoming game will be an Epicenter one at T7. And he gets the option to skip this battle queue and to enter the next one, so he takes it. Or let player Alice have boarded a Harekaze or Shikishima and let her see that the next map will be Greece or Terra del Fuego or anything else that's crowded and cluttered with rocks. Her mouse pointer moves to "skip" and she enters immediately the next queue. Advantage from a player's viewpoint: you spent less time in gaming setups that you truly dislike. Balancing idea: make the skipping a time limited consumable, like only 3 items per hour (clock coded in the span from minute 00:00 to minute 59:59) or 7 per day. And that may also be something that could be straightforward monetarized: "Buy 5 - 10 - 25 skips for XX doubloons". Possibility for WG: such a skipping mode likely provides an easily gauged metric to analyse statistically what the majority among the playerbase likes in combination and what it dislikes. Dunno if this was already suggested in the past, but any response nevertheless, @YabbaCoe et al.? Regards, Nightowl

It must be you, indeed. I concur with: When one of these distant voyages crates dropped a weird monster camo for my Bismarck, I was disgusted to a point where I nearly refused to actually mount it. In the end, my ship wears this Cephalopod thingy, making it driving around with broken, holes sides and belching poison green exhaust, as I did not want to discard the economic bonuses. Personally, I draw the line where camos begin to actually modify the ship model. Borderline OK is eg. the Eagle thing on Cleveland, beyond OK is the "SPQR" ensign on Vittorio Veneto. Whereas the paintwork "Alea jacta est" is nice eyecandy, I'm frowning every time at the flag when I dare take the Veneto out for a ride. Monster weirdness is unwanted for me. About Steampunk and consorts: I'd rather have WoWS as a somewhat arcadey naval simulator of sorts, so protecting a Great Eastern hull in a Van-Helsing-eske environment and getting shot at by trebuchets is something far off the theme of the game that should be observed. The Halloween modes dearly lack incentives to actually play them - made a single digit amount of passes in the Escort setting and none in the other offerings. I'm longing for and looking forward to Narai, again. Regards, Nightowl

Tier 11 Super Ships? Seriously?
Northern_Nightowl replied to Aethervoxx's topic in General Discussion
Well, Fugu is actually a delicacy. The muscular flesh of these dishes is devoid of tetrodotoxin, a paralysing agent killing by suffocation in smallest doses, as long as the chef takes care to avoid making a knife cut into the innards. Your image doesn't work IMHO. A comparison to a siphonophore as the European Portuguese man-o'-war (poisonous large, sometimes an invasive species) may be more adequate. Regards, Nightowl -
Yes, my GEORGIA as well detonated one time from an IJN aerial torpedo that I took in the forecastle around B turret. That was in one of the lower 0.9.* patches where I went from IIRC over 90 percent health to nil. Regards, Nightowl

US BB's. Vermont or Montana Line... or None?
Northern_Nightowl replied to Sir_Sinksalot's topic in General Discussion
Nothing to add to this. I have only Kansas (got her in early access), but went on to Montana. Slow speed and slow reload are not the only disadvantages of the paper Standard BB, although the Kansas has a great main gun range, you pretty much sit in a 12-barrel-16''-shotgunnery machine. The fast BB feel much more accurate and have the better shells (super heavy AP). If somebody brought a Kansas in one of the last Ranked seasons, the team was nearly guaranteed to loose (if I recall or estimate the win ratios correctly, out of 10 Ranked battles where a Kansas was to be seen, one was a win for the fatty's team). Does somebody have a clue or mind making up his mind on the question which language may be the original, the source's one? "Airshells" for airborne weaponry, be it bombs or less likely torpedoes and "span torpedo's" could be clues. I tend to think that the "span" is a mistranslation of a word that should mean "reach" or "range", as in spanning something over a distance (e.g. a bridge span). As I'm writing this, the French "portée" (cf. the FR-DE translation) came into my mind that actually fulfills this synonym role of a "span" meaning in architecture and that of weaponry range. If that's true, it's sad that we didn't end up with a third meaning of it, a litter (like one of cats - kitten videos, anyone? ). But I cannot think of a similar word that may give "airshell", at least not in French, even if I'm quite fluent in it. I'd like to ask: is there any other Romanic language, Spanish, Italian, eventually Greek or something from around the Adriatic sea (Balkans) where we have synonyms of "range" and "spanning over something" together with some word for airborne ammunition that could end up as "airshell"? Notwithstanding the unsoundness of the opening post, I still have a liking for a deduction game like this that is made possible by the very unsoundness itself - I hope that somebody will participate. Hmm, I do not know about any comment. The facts: three of these four torpedoes will eventually hit their mark. A first launch from 9,4km away yielded two hits. My speed may be noticed. Regards, Nightowl -

Managing first place in a random battle with my Z-23 without having actually sunk any foe... Main damage done: 3 torp hits on a West Virginia and 1 from far away on an approaching Hipper (launched while he was at 10,1km, as I estimated that he would close in enough for my fishes to reach him, I was true). And some depth charge hits on a sub. Regards, Nightowl Ups, I did it again... That was weird, as a red Midway did not even move after he got torpedoed a first time. I landed another set of 3 fishes before he started his engines... -
What did you get from the KotS crate?
Northern_Nightowl replied to _Thor_Odinson_'s topic in General Discussion
Just bought a Duke of York and a Lazo with coal so that these boats won't drop. I hoped to get an Atlanta or Scharnhorst, but it was Boise, a bit disappointed, I am. Well, as my Helena does well in Narai, so will Boise... Regards, Nightowl- 32 replies

Tulsa coming in 0.10.10 for 228k coal. Opinions? Worth it?
Northern_Nightowl replied to SolanumTuberosumRex's topic in General Discussion
You mean, every accident that happened in flight, disregarding the usual space boundary, the Karmán line at 100km altitude? As that leads to include the 2 Space Shuttle accidents with together 14 fatalities, Challenger and Columbia, you're quite right. That's why I worded my post with "while in space", I did also not include the cosmonaut killed upon mission end due to a parachute defect. Ah, the Shuttle accidents are a bad presage for the Tulsa, then. I'm deducting that US technology is bound to blast its users to smithereens, or not? Regards, Nightowl -

Northern_Nightowl replied to SolanumTuberosumRex's topic in General Discussion
Well, actually only the Soviets had a bias on the Death side and had dead astro-/cosmonauts which got killed while in space. Additionally, they shot more stuff crashing on the moon than the US did IIRC. And Apollo 13 missed the moon. As long as there's no Space Oddity and no Major Tom steering weirdly, I guess that we should look for another explanation for craters... Regards, Nightowl -
Ways to make a gameplay video out of a replay
Northern_Nightowl posted a topic in General Discussion
Hello! I'm looking for means to record a video out of an available WoWS replay. Of course, there will be always the fallback solution of using the integrated Windows feature for game recording, but this has the disadvantage of needing a real time playback. So: is there any tool, online or offline, where you can either plan as background task or directly order to make a video of any replay submitted? Or is there any way to run TWO instances of the game client? As I have a dual screen setup, I could eventually use one screen and one client instance to record the replay while I'm actually playing with the second ones. Additionally: does somebody has information about whether WoWS will run in a Windows virtual machine (especially about graphics)? I could eventually set up a Virtualbox VM so as to be able to force the 2 instances, as long as 16 GB of RAM and 8 GB of VRAM will be enough. I should be OK CPU-wise. I would really like to avoid to have to use parts of my available free time for replay recording in real time. Regards, Nightowl -

The following story surely belongs in the category funny. Our opposing team gave away an IMHO already secured win possibly out of greed for damage and/or sinkings. While the Reds lead by a margin of some points and an advantage in numbers of DD and BB, the remaining allied forces didn't give up the fight. At this moment, I had just got sunk, taking a Bayern with me and anxiously watching the events unfolding. The following attrition had a cost of one Colorado and some health of the 2 DD and the CV on the foe's side while we were depleted of our remaining BB and our Edinburgh that had attempted to cap Red's base. Now, the stage is ripe for our game carrying CV and his eventually earned Kraken. He got chased by a Red that plainly crossed our own base in pursuit of his would-be prey, our CV. But his driver did a good job. While he ignored or dodged the shells and torpedoes slung in his direction, he finished off the red Lexington before turning his attention to the buggers still around. One got sunk by bombs while the other didn't manage to rob our brave comrade of his last 3-6k health in the seconds that remained in the match. So, we finally prevailed against the odds and won by a margin of around 40-60 points. It was a great game. Regards, Nightowl -
Which forum members have you seen in random battles?
Northern_Nightowl replied to Cobra6's topic in General Discussion
I just had a battle with @GarrusBrutus where we were both in the same team. He drove a Salem, while my mount was a Z-23. Nice to see you; and I quite enjoyed the outcome! Regards, Nightowl -
Hello, I'm pondering a problem. Shall I get a permacamo or shall I rather finish the 6th anniversary collection? That's the current state of affairs resource-wise: I do not perform this well in cruisers and have currently not the way to play Lyon (I'm actually thinking to use free XP to go to the Richelieu, as I like the front armament on my Strasbourg). But I'm interested in having the Zara from a historical point of view. On the other hand, I'm up to around 50% WR in DD - as long as they allow stealthy torpedo attacks (having tuned my Fletcher for this purpose and my Harekaze is hard-worked too). So, if I had to rank the permacamos in descending order of desirability for me, I'd tie the Gadjah and the Zara camo on first place, followed by Lyon and the glass cannon at last. Collection-wise, I would need 8 crates to finish it if I'm not mistaken. I won't have the time to replenish the tokens to finish the collection and to buy a camo, as I won't grind enough credits to buy the ships needed. So, what would you do in my place? Camo or collection? And which camo? Regards, Nightowl PS. Here are the relevant tech trees of the ships concerned. Neither is actually developed much. I'm more focused on US, DE and IJN with UK and EU trailing.

This felt like my best game in weeks or maybe months, and surely as the best game ever until now in my (seldom played...) ANSHAN. - Kraken in Ranked - 6 citadel hits and destroying a TRENTO Regards, Nightowl -
Tier 9. As: And I utmost DISLIKE the uptiering of 2 steps (that may be the single most annoying game mechanic that I can name), as I hardly ever have a chance to prevail, let's say in a Gaede against a Baltimore or a Bayern or Warspite against a North Carolina, not to speak about CV. I have a single ship where I don't mind as much getting uptiered by +2: my Harekaze, as it's stealth allows me to play around carriers or radar cruisers, even T10 ones. Single way to avoid this: playing T4 or T9, but you won't progress in regards to missions or much in regard to the economics in T4. And economics makes me avoiding the T10 (currently owning Montana, Hindenburg, Gearing and and Napoli, the latter a quickly made purchase for a super container), I'm not fond of loosing credits... Give us dept charge indicators, WG!
Northern_Nightowl replied to Zigiran's topic in General Discussion
Hmm... What's the matter? Out of 10 attacks (myself in a depth charge equipped ship), I land at least one charge on the sub in 6 cases, and I often manage several hits. Just compute mentally where the sub was going, memorize its last seen position and then add around one ship length of yours to lead and account for the depth charge sinking time. KABOOM and you'll revive some Battle of the Atlantic moments, even without ASDIC. Regards, Nightowl Caveat: this holds only true for charge dropping ships, not launching ones - I have not yet engaged a sub in FRIESLAND. -
What Were Your Greatest Gaming Achievements Today ?

I have had a brutally intense Ranked game that took place on "Fault line". I was our last man standing, in Warspite, and still managed to win against 3 foes (a first for me). During the course of the battle, I was at first not much engaged and part of the action, save for some long distance (~14km +) HE hits on DD. Only in the second half, I was able to employ my armament more often. At first, I mostly fought a Fusô, that fell under the hits of the combined fire of team operated cruiser guns and my 15-inchers. Meanwhile, several lighter units on both sides were already down. After having crossed the horizontal center line and the Fusô sinking, I was somewhat focused by the remaining enemies, so I turned around an islands below C cap. The climax of the battle was near - I eventually stood alone against an Anshan, an Aoba and a sub, the Cachalot. Let the result screens speak for themselves now (and if anybody wants, also the replay). Regards, Nightowl 20210926_135746_PBSB002-Warspite-1941_17_NA_fault_line.wowsreplay -

I got 1000 Doubloons, 15k coal, 7 premium days and 25 dragon flags out of containers earned in the birthday event (2 by my T10 ships, 2 with missions). And I just bought another SC with 2000 community tokens. Lucky me: Regards, Nightowl -

Northern_Nightowl replied to Ddaywarrior's topic in General Discussion
Graf Spee for Doubloons that I earned ingame. But only because only a few days later, the HSF ships came out, and I couldn't resist buying a HSF Spee (and my Harekaze). I now sit with twin ships in my port, where the standard SPee mainly rusts around. I would have preferred to buy a Dunkerque instead, if I had known that I could get a HSF Spee... Regards, Nightowl -
Credit where credit is due - IMHO "Bralws" were great addition and should be made permanent feature of WoWs !
Northern_Nightowl replied to Leo_Apollo11's topic in General Discussion
Yeah, the most efficient tactic for me there was, assuming a standard order of battle of one BB, one DD and one cruiser each, that each ship blocks one ring and waits for the Reds to come. It was eased by having German hydro ships (either DD or CL) in front. Charging through the middle was much more aleatory in its outcome and going round most often illusory due to a lack of time. I agree to agree! I grinded out my Normandie on the current brawls session and looks forward for more. Isn't the lineup in clan battles also just encompassing "few ships that are viable over and over"? But indeed, there were a fair share of Andrea Doria's and T-61 around. And going by the numbers of Shinonomes I saw, lots of veterans must have been also active lately. Regards, Nightowl -
What are those better options? Just asking, as the Iowa is presently the lone tech tree T9 BB that I have, so I surely lack comparison data. But I am sure about one thing: I'm most often favouring the Iowa over the Georgia (I have both), 3 more main gun barrels are really handy. The speed boost of Georgia only seldom make it up for having around 5k more health on Iowa. And an advantage of Iowa over the Colorado and the North Carolina: you can't get uptiered by two steps as it is common at T7 and T8. Regards, Nightowl

What Were Your Greatest Gaming Achievements Today ?
Northern_Nightowl replied to Hanszeehock's topic in General Discussion
I feel it always as being a really tough game when your opponents in Brawls are in a complete 3 people division, whereas you enter the battle randomly and have to make do with whatever teammate the MM allocated you. It even tougher IMHO when this division encompasses a CV. The actual game was on "Shatter", Teammates: Warspite, Devonshire and I drove a Fubuki. Opponents: Leander, Andrea Doria, E. Loewenhardt. I felt like if we all were to go for the caps, it would have been a loss, as the enemy team could have easily whittled us down with fire. Indeed, the CV engaged quickly with its bombers, I took a hit while driving through H5. The Red CV pilot also set up an air patrol just above the shortest entrance way to the caps (square F5). The question obviously was: "How can we outplay and outsmart a team that is likely communicating via voice?" I recalled that my DD had a motorboost that, I guessed, should work the time needed to flank up to the right of the big island at G6-F6, announcing my intend to do so in the game chat: Our Devonshire was obviously not sharing this view and voiced his concerns in an expletive way. He progressed straight ahead to the caps and got sunk. Meanwhile, I finished my run up the island coast as intended and I saw a nice big, juicy target sitting in a narrow channel without much room to manoeuvre: BOOM! Yes, the detonation was lucky. But even without it, our Warspite (not visible on the map, he was in front of the F5-island IIRC) would have had a foe in from of him that lost a good deal of his fighting strength and health. Now, I had a thought of engaging the red Leander that also was in an unnerving proximity to me (a mere 7 km on my 9 o'clock). But another option crossed my mind: I recalled that CVs in brawls on "Shatter" like hugging islands, when having been spawned on top, they are often to be found on the C line. Additionally, in this battle, the red planes always entered our field of vision around C6, I had the opinion that some of them bifurcated somewhat to the right towards C7 before disappearing. So, it was a sound hypothesis that the red CV choose to hide nearby the big island of C6-D6. Hence, I progressed northwards, to find that the idea was correct: The carrier indeed was there. Disregarding my stealth and safety, I engaged with all weapons available. I landed three torpedoes on him and shot the last 1000 and a little of healthpoints away with my guns. It cost me the remainder of my health, I burned down due to a fire set up by some planes IIRC (may also have been the CV's secondaries), but I thought that it was a good tradeoff. This came out true, our Warspite sank the Leander with one AP salvo through the bow, and we managed to win against this division. That was an intense and satisfying battle for me and likely also for our jovial Warspite driver. I hope that the Devonshire captain is also happy with the result... N.B. The battle screenshots are taken out of the replay. I guess that the UI is somewhat buggy due to the fact that I pre-installed the upcoming update which may interact badly with my mods. This should account especially for the failed updates of our HP bars and map positions. Regards, Nightowl
