New Year Fleet Event vs. Stage 18 Reward "HMS Repulse"

Huh? That opinion is not confirmed by my own experience. There were missions that were time consuming or difficult to do in time (especially those involving Base XP), around two thirds of the chain towards the Strasbourg IIRC (easier before and after), but in the end, I managed to get all of the free stuff comfortably before the event's end, I had some days left. I did not use doubloons. Regards, Nightowl

Guess the ship in the next Blacked Friday event.

Especially seen that all of those ships are from the pre-atomic age (save the Irian as a Sverdlovsk class, Småland and paper stuff), giving low-background steel. No need to go on a harvest in Scapa Flow, take a dive in Wargaming servers! Nightowl

Smith Black? Rather the other way round. Blacksmith - by the amour of potatoes in game (among whom I may be, too ), he should never run out of repair work of damaged steel on ships. SCNR Regards, Nightowl

What is your 'rarest' ship in WoWS?

That may be my HSF ships, HSF Graf Spee and HSF Harekaze (the first, not the second version). Got them while they were available again some months ago. And I'm fond of them, especially the Harekaze with its Isoroku camo (nice captain trainer - and nice sight... MIAAUUU). Regards, Nightowl

Jean Bart B or Alaska B?

Hello! Please help me put with your opinions. I feel like that I'm longing for those vessels, Jean Bart and Alaska, for quite some time now. But due to economics, it surely will be only one, not both. I like BB, I'm feeling at ease with the frontal armament in Strasbourg. It only has a quite big disadvantage, the disadvantageous matchmaking of its T7. I'm interested in cruisers despite currently performing badly in them (my ship performances in descending order will probably be: DD - BB - CA - CL, CV and sub not rated). Witch ship will, on average, be the better credit earner? If you were me, what ship would you get first? You may gauge me by my WoWS-numbers stats, and if I can provide some more info for this, I'll show for it later (as I'm currently using my phone for this posting, copy-pasting links is a bit of a hassle, sorry). Looking forward for replies to make my decision - Nightowl

Jean Bart B or Alaska B?

I finally settled on the Alaska B and just got her. The last ship that I bought with RL money, my HSF Harekaze, had a nice effect: it enticed me to learn "how to DD". Before, my DD winrate was at sub-45%, and I abhorred every mission that mandated DD (had only the US line, up to Farragut or Mahan stock, back then). Now, I'm at 51% WR in DD and slowly improving while enjoying IJN DD, Fletcher and German DD. So, maybe the psychology of having spent something will work for cruisers too. Regards, Nightowl

Oh - I wish that I'll meet him in the future. Having such an asset in the team is such a great force multiplier... Would be happy to experience some teamplay. Regards, Nightowl

    Co-Op Becoming pointless for BBs

Maybe one should amend this opinion by saying "Everything with a top speed below 25-26kn is pointless in Co-op, regardless of ship type or tier. Torpedo carrying ships are at an advantage." I stil maintain that you can use co-op to train a single ability: gauging where you have to put the crosshair to hit targets approaching or receding at an angle. Broadside, bow-on and maybe 45° are not this hard, but hitting everything in between is something needing practice. And more DD are actually helpful, as human-driven ones in other battle modes will surely juke around. So, if you've practised the coup d'oeil to hit a moving target in a difficult aspect, its basics are doable in Co-op, you own a kind of advantage. Regards, Nightowl

    Was it always like this

Yes, that's the classical pattern of icebreakers. But there's indeed another technique that involves a kind of actual cutting. A German yard, Thyssen Nordseewerke, may build a ship with a Thyssen-Waas bow, where sharp edges serve to introduce local stresses into an ice sheet, making it break in such a way that a better (read: broader) channel is formed, whereas the icebreaker itself needs less engine power to shove the ice pieces aside and under the remaining ice layer than the classical ones with a rounded pushing-and-crushing bow. Co-Op Becoming pointless for BBs

Nah, you could also train your lead estimation abilities to shoot at targets at an angle. As dynamic sights are made for targets going broadside, factoring in a necessary correction for those that make an angled approach has to be trained, and co-op is fitting for that. Regards, Nightowl

Ships you didn't expect you'd like

I didn't expect to get fond of destroyers as I was, at my beginnings, a bit frightened by their fragility. And I should not have tried to begin DD fighting with the US line. Well, now I really like my HSF Harekaze, IJN and German DD and my torpedo boat geared Fletcher. As it may become visible: stealth torping, mostly done while driving near the inner edge of the detectability, is a must-have for me... Regards, Nightowl

    What's wrong with my planes?

On my PC at home, running Firefox, the same phenomenon happens, I hardly ever see posted links that are not plain text (e.g. Reddit, WoWS news or similar, as long as no media is framed). I think that not only YT links are affected, but likely also Twitch and similar things. I always thought that it may be due to some side effect of my script and ad blocker (NoScript and AdBlock Plus), as it doesn't happen on my smartphone Chrome. Sometimes, if another forumite is quoting the respective OP and his link, I see it in the quote, sometimes not. Didn't check Edge or Opera on the PC though. Regards, Nightowl PS. A written, even short, problem description would have been handy, as I often dislike investing time or mobile data to watch a video, being faster in assimilating textual information.

Why play a cruiser if you aren't using your utilities?

Ya know, I have no idea how many times I used some consumable, be it hydro, radar, smoke, heal, due to a fat finger... or used one kind while I actually wanted another one and got confounded by having the same key assigned to different functions on different ships (smoke <-> heal, hydro <-> heal)... Mistyping is always great. Regards, Nightowl

    Coop cost money to play?

Hadn't we a mission to make 500 base XP for a Supership token last week or so? I quickly understood for me that making it mandatory in Coop at T10 was to give the token a hidden credit cost. I am all but guaranteed to make a loss in Montana or Hindenburg, mostly between 20k and 60k credits, the higher number on the BB. A match may turn profitable in my Gearing (fifty-fifty chance of having either a loss up to 20k or a net profit up to 50k) and should be netting a five-digit number of credits in m sole permaflaged T10 ship, Napoli. But losing credits already at T9? How that? Slow US BB? Even with tech tree ships without camo or flags, I cannot recall making noticeable losses at T9, that may be due to my usage of fast ships (Fletcher, Roon, Georgia, Iowa, in that order, permaflaged BB). But I admit that I avoid T9 in Coop also, as the matchmaking usually is not in favour for achieving damage, citadel, flooding or burning missions. It's better in games up to T7: the maps are smaller, the action quicker. Regards, Nightowl

am i the worst ranked player here?

I agree to disagree and would like to enter the competition for baddest player also. I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but it's already hard to reach Bronze level 5 for me (failed this for 2 or 3 seasons, including the current one, now), whereas I managed to go to level 1 quite well beforehand. And even qualified for Silver during the season in spring this year. Guess that the latest tiers didn't suit me well (too much Shinonomes and T-61s lastly, too much radar presently)... Where is the enjoyable T7 gone? :-/ Regards, Nightowl

Jean Bart B or Alaska B?

Well. Are you maybe using a Microsoft Office 365 or an Adobe Creative Cloud subscription? Or a paid antivirus software? Or anything else along the lines of Software as a Service? Or are you using a subscription on Netflix or Spotify? In any case, digital goods and services are monetarized, without having the customer owning a physical hardcopy with the data and without entitling this customer to do whatever he wants with his property (resell it, decompile it, etc.). Wargaming at least charges only a single time for the license to use a digital artwork. So, paying for the right to use such a virtual ship in-game is something absolutely common. Neither comments are on topic. As I'm looking for guidance about a possible ship choice, getting remarks about closed wallets (yours, not mine, obviously) is only diluting helpful content... Not very kind. So, take it as given that I may use money on the game, that's my personal decision. And several posters already gave helpful opinions, thanks for that! BTW. Is there somebody out there who's willing to team up in a division to test me and my skills this evening? Just asking beforehand if there's some volunteer for this kind of stunt... Regards, Nightowl

    PROPOSAL: Refit-Designer

Full ack. Does it actually matter in standard Randoms to know ship characteristics to the literal second decimal place? I, for myself, tend to assume: "UK BB = fire danger", "KM cruiser or DD = 6km hydro", "KM BB = impervious citadel", "European DD = eatable torpedoes" and so on. So to say, I will rather observe general characteristics without pondering the exact specification. (Of course, competitions as KOTS will surely need a tactical observance of the concise data.) I see an easy way to alleviate these fears of unpredictability. First, a given amount of it should be healthy for the game and fun. For the remainder, the client could include features that are currently offered by mods: a display of the ship's data near the targeted ship itself. Or you could get a relative ranking with symbols as + and - so as to e.g. have: Name: T6-refit QE / Armour + / Sec-guns ++ / Speed - relative to the tech tree data. Regards, Nightowl

    Novocesare

So, you assume implicitly that the distinction is unjustified? As the game operator is an entity that operates in a commercially-driven way, making a distinction to offer an advantage to paying customers (this mission is open to superships, if I read your screenshot correctly) is justified by economic goals. So no discrimination in the strict sense. Regards, Nightowl

    PROPOSAL: Refit-Designer

Hard yes to the proposal. Whereas the critic of a too arcadey gamestyle is something I would fully concur with, nothing will be done about it. So one could ask for a feature that could actually easily provide some fun. About the argument P2W: IMHO not true. When someone looks at the monetarization features already implemented, especially premium ships and modules, giving a way to customize one's own ship doesn't go too far away from this. And nobody is forced to refit, say, an OMAHA for T6 or T7, as American cruiser torpedoes won't be such a game breaker vs. e.g. some T8 ship so as to make such a refit mandatory for winning battles (I choose this example because that would actually be something I may consider. The Omaha is quite good looking, has nice weapons and, if I were only better at cruisers, will be fun to play. I like mine). Regards, Nightowl

no more stat shaming? [WR < 46% = plain bad]

As per the rules, insults are to be avoided. As avoidance does not fully mean "forbidden" and, furthermore, any individual that does not manage to be better than winning more than 46 battles out of 100, can be called bad without having the facts wrong, I would say that's a harsh critic. But as long as you do not intend to attack the honour (cave: I'm German, in our laws, an insult, "Beleidigung", is a so-called "Ehrendelikt", meaning an infringement against someone's personal honour. So, I could very well make a weird language usage here, but I hope that you'll get the point nevertheless) of the opponent, you won't cross the border to an insult. Only if the context shows that the personality or something similar of the so denominated person is attacked, then you're likely guilty of insulting. Regards, Nightowl

    Two supercruiser lines proposals

The Hipper class ships had a disadvantage in 2 of them: their high-pressure high temperature steam turbine powerplant that showed troublesome and prone to battle damage in practice. Save for Prinz Eugen who performed very well during the whole war and actually was the heaviest Kriegsmarine unit surviving. What do you mean with "the whole class was useless"? Please state whether it's about the Hipper class of ships or about the ship type "heavy cruiser" that is to say, a vessel that was to have a maximum a displacement of 10.000 tons and guns up to 203 mm / 8 inches as per the Washington naval treaty? The sobriquet "10 minutes cruiser" was IIRC never applied to any German ship. It's about the over-gunned and under-armored Japanese, US and maybe British ships that were build or planned in the prelude of WWII for a fight in the Pacific. As designers put a premium on guns, as large and as much as mechanically fitting on a given hull size where around a third of possible weight was already used up for propulsion, there were not much displacement left for armour. Hence, the resilience to battle damage was doubtful at least and the sobriquet likely deserved. This is approximately mirrored in game. I would rather go against a Baltimore in a Hipper than the opposite (or Yorck vs. New Orleans) even if I am not to use the German torpedoes. Regards, Nightowl
