What words are covered by censorship?
Northern_Nightowl replied to callumwaw's topic in General Discussion
FYI about how I am personally using the report system and "Misbehaviour in chat": swearing alone won't trigger me. I also use "F***" or other swearing when I blundered hard or when I got sunk in a hot situation, as it may relieve some frustration. But where I follow a near-zero tolerance policy is when some player begins to personally attack others, completing swearwords with pronouns to make complete insults. I absolutely see no necessity in trying to relieve someone's own frustration by insulting others be it a simple call of "you idi*t" or going sexual with F-words. As a human, I can easily and I do analyse the context. Disregarding whether these people are on my own or on the opposing team, I almost ever make a click on "Misbehaviour in chat". I'm here for these games where several gamers flock together and give their best to win, encouraging and helping others in a show of teamwork. And it doesn't hurt if, in a pitched fight, a nice move by the foe gets complimented. And if the chat gets used for funny bantering, that's welcome too, as long as jokes, puns and so on are not encroaching on other people. Regards, Nightowl -
Dunno why, but somehow I read "improved chat by AUTOPSY". Well, fitting for a zombie thread, isn't it? Regards, Nightowl

What Were Your Greatest Gaming Achievements Today ?

Second game ever in Yûgumo and her 10-pointer captain, and IIRC first, or at the most second, Random game where I managed more than 1mio credits (with economic and dragon flags, but no credit income camo): Regards, Nightowl -
The worst feature of the game for me: the possibility of uptiering by 2 tiers. It's a perpetual outlawing, in the judicial sense and the sense of making them defenseless prey, for cruisers. Regards, Nightowl

A way to make CVs in sync with surface ships
Northern_Nightowl replied to FukushuNL's topic in General Discussion
To come up with limiting the plane range is a weird thing and not the first idea that would come into my mind for making CV "them fall in line with the rest of the ships". Whereas it's not a bad suggestion per se, there are some things that could be done before: making CV burnable, floodable and explodable, preferentially with chances for this to happen above those of truly armored ships. Remind the sardonic mnemonic about the CVE classes of the WWII? "Combustible, Vulnerable, Expendable"? But tampering with planes is indeed something good. But not with the range, it's rather the flight time that should be limited. Each squadron may have a maximum of 5 minutes or so of action time, with the countdown beginning with the departure from the CV. When this time expires, any plane still flying returns immediately to its mother ship, without contributing to spotting any more (as with planes that have dropped their ordnance currently do, too). Question about Karma system design limitations
Northern_Nightowl posted a topic in General Discussion
Hello! Does somebody have a clue about why compliments have this daily limit of 7 items? I fully understand why negative reports are limited: it's obviously to make it a somewhat scarce resource, so as to limit selfish frustration spam and "political statements" (as this routine CV reporting because "CV") and to entice it's usage for reasonable cases (inappropriate chatting or the like). But why are compliments limited too? Lately, I got a bit disappointed because I ran out of them, I used them up for showing my consideration for teammates that provided me and themselves nice Ranked battles. It always make a more enjoyable game if some people that are randomly matched together still find a way, the game chat is the obvious one, to cooperate for a common aim. Even if some gamers begin to spam with them, it still won't be a grievance, IMHO. So: what's the rationale in making compliments this strictly limited in numbers? Regards, Nightowl -
[Poll] How many "Open" ship lines (i.e. not reached Tier X) you have (grind, re-grind for "Research Bureau", neglected / forgotten)?
Northern_Nightowl replied to Leo_Apollo11's topic in General Discussion
For me, it'll be easier to answer the other way round: 4 lines finished (German cruisers / Hindenburg, US DD / Gearing, US fast BB / Montana and researched but not bought: German BB / Großer Kurfürst). The other lines sit mostly between T6 and T8, save pan-asian DD and German and UK CV (not yet begun). Regards, Nightowl- 45 replies

Tutoring thread: BDA and tactics corner
Northern_Nightowl replied to Northern_Nightowl's topic in General Discussion
Here are some replays: Gearing and Montana in Ranked, actual wins. But I do not feel like if I had been really pivotal on these battles. The more recent Gearing battle was one where a Schlieffen driver came forth with a tactical suggestion that got put in effect. It's another evidence that cooperating helps winning games. 20211226_003205_PASD013-Gearing-1945_47_Sleeping_Giant.wowsreplay 20211226_000135_PASD013-Gearing-1945_47_Sleeping_Giant.wowsreplay The second (15:32) Montana battle had me sunk while I hadn't carried my weight yet, that's to say, I made less damage than my HP total was. I actually saw, I think a bit late, that I was going tu run into the gunsights of more ships than I could tank, on my right. I still got sunk. About damage numbers: it could have been either an aim than was a bit too high (not the waterline) or some randomness that made shots aimed at broadsides not earning me decent damage, or a bad target selection. May you eventually tell me? 20211225_151612_PASB017-Montana-1945_16_OC_bees_to_honey.wowsreplay 20211225_153240_PASB017-Montana-1945_25_sea_hope.wowsreplay The Kagerô battles were lost. Tutoring thread: BDA and tactics corner
Northern_Nightowl replied to Northern_Nightowl's topic in General Discussion
Hello! I'd like to ask for an analysis of my performance on DD, as I'm wondering about a quite large discrepancy in battle performances. The raw numbers, taken from WoWS-Numbers.com, tell that I'm more or less average-to-bottom-average per my winrates (they're laying between 47-52% on my best + often played DD), in Ranked and Random. But there's a noticeable exception: in Yamagiri, I recently managed a ~60% WR, roundabout 8-12 percentage points better than my nest best DD. The ship carried me all the way from Bronze rank 5 up to Silver league. The question is: how? What factors are the base of this result? Are they only to be found in the brute fighting power of the supership and the guarantee to be somewhat top tier? Here is some evidence for Yamagiri, Gearing, Fletcher and HSF Harekaze. You'll se the chosen modules and the chosen captain skills. Yamagiri: Gearing: Fletcher: Harekaze: The Harekaze is actually my main captain training vessel for the IJN, so, beyond the 10 survivability points, the remaining skills may be rather varied. Albeit if I am to play Ranked with the HSF ship, I'd likely put the same captain on it as on the Yamagiri (it's the guy with the most skill points in my team). Generally, I'm building my DD for survivability and stealthy torpedo usage. Tactically, I'm favouring a playstyle where I close to the border of my own detectability before launching fishes. Smoke is mostly for defense and to bail out of my driving mistakes, guns are rather secondary weapons. Last picture, the statistics of the DD that I'm driving most often in Randoms ("Solo" window): When I want DD fun with some certainty to win, my pick would be Fletcher and Harekaze, in that order. In these 2 vessels, I do not mind of being uptiered and I'm mostly feeling confident about being able to contribute meaningfully to the team's success. So, after having served you all these data (replays may follow if needed, I'm not on my main machine where those are saved), I'd like to return to my opening question: what may be the factors, if any, that could explain my better gameplay in Yamagiri vs. Gearing and my other good destroyers? I'm eagerly looking for answers that may help me on my way to get better generally. Regards, Nightowl -
Hello, in a recent game of mine, I observed a funny phenomenon. Playing the Yamagiri, I launched a full salvo of torpedoes. My idea was area denial on a cap zone, so I wanted the slow long range variant. I entered the pre-battle countdown with the selector on the short-and-fast fishes and switched to the other one (slow and long range) while the time to start was ticking down. My tubes were now loaded and I put out the spread. I was a bit puzzled by the look of four fishes coming out late of their tubes, and those four fastily sped away, overtaking the fourteen other weapons in the water. And indeed, they ran out long before the major group. The conclusion is clear: I had a mixed load of weapons in my tubes. Funny sight, funny bug, and have other players seen similar effects? Evidences via replay screenshots, a video out of the replay (launch at about 0:28) and the replay itself: 20211221_195450_PJSD111-Yamagiri_52_Britain.wowsreplay Regards, Nightowl

Advice for current Tier IX gift shop ship
Northern_Nightowl replied to mpc007's topic in General Discussion
A quote from the LWM review about the Spee: " HSF Admiral Graf Spee is the better version of this ship with her camouflage bonuses", so, even if it's only a reskin, it could be counted separately, as the camo is not available through any other means. And if I recall it correctly the HSF Spee was available after the pulling of the standard premium Spee from sale. The Harekaze is furthermore a unique vessel. I won't argue about the technicality of that everything's for free, but, even if I didn't check the drop chances, i felt that the reduced amounts of options in the veteran crate (the ships, if they drop, are T8 and nothing else, the remaining options are also reduced in number) is favourable compared to the SC chances (where the chance of getting a T8 ship is reduced due to it being "diluted" in the chances of getting something else between T2 and T10, along with the drop rate of other content). Right now, there's no limited offer underway, true. But you stated that there's no limited time offers with an absoluteness (lacking a time constraint) that was proven wrong by the past and will likely be proven wrong by the future. This was my point. Advice for current Tier IX gift shop ship
Northern_Nightowl replied to mpc007's topic in General Discussion
The second sentence is plain wrong, the first one in part. Cooperation offers (High School Fleet, Arpeggio, Transformers...) are indeed limited in time and may actually yield great ships (like HSF Graf Spee and HSF Harekaze as per LWM reviews and my own experience). And you may get T8 premiums through the Veteran Recruiting Station containers which incur not this much of a grind, besides using Twitch for around 5 hours a week on the official WoWS channel and fulfilling the Twitch missions for earning Community tokens. Ever other month or so, you have a go for this crate using the resources so earned. Regards, Nightowl -
Boise: T7 ship crate stemming from the KoTS collection. Didn't dare to take it out in Randoms, as I'm neither good in cruisers nor is the matchmaking at T7 suited for this kind of ships. Has so far only seen Narai and Coop. Alaska B: my Black Friday purchase. It feels good to have and good to drive. It's handy for the campaigns. Kidd: it emerged from a Veteran Recruiting Station container. It'll surely see a bit more action, but I'm currently more on Ranked and grinding tech tree DD. Ägir: same reasoning as with Alaska: it feels good to have, good to drive and it's handy for campaigns. Arizona: it emerged from my single medium santa crate. Same as Kidd: will see more action but not yet. Hill: emerged from a Seasoned Recruiting Station Container. But this one will be surely only a snowflake farmer. I don't like DD where you'll have to weather off a shell rain before you're able to use fishes. Regards, Nightowl

My first ever Solo warrior... But with a good amount of luck. If my last salvo hadn't met a Z-52 that was even more damaged than me in Gearing, the outcome would have been different. Replay: 20211217_005937_PASD013-Gearing-1945_18_NE_ice_islands.wowsreplay Regards, Nightowl -
Can't sell Puerto Rico? (context menu)
Northern_Nightowl replied to seasicker's topic in General Discussion
You apparently own Puerto Rico. There was one auctioned on WoWS Discord during the charity stream of late. I happened to watch the event, so I can report how many US dollars were spent by the winning bidder, apparently playing on Asia server. The sum is in the spoiler. So, decide by yourself if selling this ship is worth it... Regards, Nightowl -

Is there anyone who wants to enjoy a french fries serving? If yes, then give me some oil, I'll fry myself as I potatoed really hard just now. LMAO. Please try this for yourself: Coop, actually loosing credits in T8 and zero damage - but without being penalized for inactivity... Still LMAO. Why I'm posting here? Well, the achievement consists in discovering what happens when you're this short of credits that the post-battle expenses aren't covered. I actually forgot to switch to Randoms and had flags and camo equipped... Further LMAO. Regards, Nightowl -
What is the ideal battleship design for World of Warships?
Northern_Nightowl replied to Redwing6891's topic in General Discussion
Build a USS Monitor with gas turbine propulsion (contemporary to late designs in WoWS), bow thrusters and something akin to a 8"/55 caliber Mark 71 gun in a double turret and I think you're done. Regards, Nightowl- 31 replies

Best Tier 6 tech-tree ships to play in Operations?
Northern_Nightowl replied to CaravellaCaravan's topic in General Discussion
In general, look for something that's fast and resilient. Bayern may be a good pick. The Nürnberg shall serve you well too, it has the advantage of a decent torpedo loadout along with good guns (their 360° rotation often comes in handy). Gunnery-wise: the Pensacola may allow you to citadel the first T4 BB in "Raptor's Rescue", but you will have to manage your healthpoints stock well, and it lacks torpedoes. The Devonshire lacks gun range in some scenarii, especially the Newport defense. But is has heals. The Aoba somewhat lacks rate of fire and ease of target switching (slow reload, slow turret rotation) and the Budjonny doesnt't feel agreeable to me, it won't be my first Ops pick. I cannot say much about the French and Italian techtrees, Normandie and Andrea Doria weren't something to take note off in Ops for me. Neither were the cruisers notable, but this is due to the fact that I do not have playing experience in them. Personally, I had fun with my Ranger in "Killer Whale", a lot of ships offer themselves as torpedo targets, you could also train your bombing on not really potent targets. Regards, Nightowl PS. The OP asked for tech-tree ships, so why are ships like Dunkerque, Mutsu, Graf Spee, De Grasse etc. mentioned at all? They are premiums, so not that what the OP is asking for. -

No. An expensive 16-barrelled shotgun doesn't entice me to spend, spraying shells all over the place is disgusting. It's already not something that I'm enjoying in the French Lyon, so this Dockyard is not an offer for me. Repulse shall be the stop. Regards, Nightowl
