Fun tier 6 premium ships for operations?
Northern_Nightowl replied to CaravellaCaravan's topic in General Discussion
Economics and captain training? You'll have an advantage in switching commanders around, earning XP and maybe credits and you will save upon your camo stock, unless, of course, you got a permacamo on a tech tree ship. And why did nobody mention the (HSF) Graf Spee? True, you'll have to wait for a possible revival of the HSF cooperation to get one, but otherwise, it should be a decent pick: heal, 8km torps, large 28cm guns (albeit only 6 of them), sufficiently fast for Ops. Regards, Nightowl -
Caps lock is similar, both of those formatting things express yelling AFAIK, when used for entire postings. Hello Bluemerry, thank you for your reply. I'll provide you a screenshot below (in the spoiler, made with the Windows snipping tool), but let me assure you: the regular sans serif font that is the forum's default is perfectly readable. Of course, sparingly used formatted fonts to highlight some textual elements are totally acceptable. You mentioned different screens. As there are some high resolution devices around, Retina displays or the like, you may want to check whether a sensible zooming factor is set. On high DPI displays, you can use a zoom level of 125% or up to 150% to enhance the readability of texts (there will be an operating system setting for this, likely among the graphics options). Ah, and I think that I likely was a bit too harsh in first addressing you, above. I'd like to apologize. Regards, Nightowl

Do you want subs fully integrated into WOWS in their current form?
Northern_Nightowl replied to Yedwy's topic in General Discussion
I did actually vote "yes". A submarine in a battle where I'm in that gets into my range (I see myself as a DD and BB player) is a much more convenient target than, let's say, a bowtanking, island hugging radar cruiser, tanky German BB or a wiggly speeding French DD. I feel that I have an easier time to put depth charges on a sub than making other air dropped munitions (bombs including the air strike variant, torpedoes and especially rockets) hit a target afloat. So, while I'm currently not playing them, I don't mind getting opposed to one or two, especially as there are already people around that use them for the sake of a teamplay win (by spotting, harassing and adding useful damage via fire concentration). So, it's also often a useful addition to my own team. Regards, Nightowl -
Hello BlueMerry, I'd like to advise you that a permanent usage of a bold font in forum postings is seen as equivalent to yelling IRL. So, as I've noted that you're persistently sticking to this writing manner all across this board, you're actually always yelling all over the place. It's really unnerving, at least as far as I am concerned, especially when you're reiterating an utmost unfun and stale idea (reporting CV for the sake of them being here). So, please stop writing in permanent boldface ASAP and try to make better jokes if possible. Regards, Nightowl

Stun bombs..... can be April fools joke?
Northern_Nightowl replied to Andrewbassg's topic in General Discussion
I know the purpose of the stun bombs. They are made to pave the way for gay bombs. SCNR and regards, Nightowl -
Hello! I'm using the Aslain modpack and chose to get a modifier for ship icons in the team setups, among others, showing me whether a particular ship has hydro or radar and their ranges. It's the "Poseidon_Brazil" stuff. It has an issue, as it renders the silhouette of the Großer Kurfürst with an appliqué name "Grossdeutschland". This naming has unnecessary Nazism connections, alluding to the informal state name of the Third Reich or a Wehrmacht formation, besides being simply wrong - the ship name is not "Großdeutschland", Greater Germany, but "Großer Kurfürst", Great Elector. While I don't mind encountering Swastikas or other Third Reich symbols in games that have the second quarter of the 20th century as a theme, the freedom of art and the purpose of immersion show for that, I think that their usage must adhere to the principle "As much as required, as little as possible". Otherwise, it may very well run afoul of European legal rules like the German §86a StGB, which forbids the public usage of unconstitutional symbols with exceptions in civic education, art and research. So, I'd like to see this fixed. As I do not have an account at Aslain's, I kindly ask for that somebody who actually has forwards this message to the relevant persons. Regards, Nightowl

What Were Your Greatest Gaming Achievements Today ?
Northern_Nightowl replied to Hanszeehock's topic in General Discussion
I just had a very good game in my Richelieu. A loss, yes, but still more base XP than the best Red by a fair margin, a Kraken, and suspense on top, while running a commander with only 6 used skill points. 20220329_234409_PFSB108-Richelieu_53_Shoreside.wowsreplay Regards, Nightowl -
Aslian modpack element, content question
Northern_Nightowl replied to Northern_Nightowl's topic in General Discussion
Aye. Let's say that some heavy Kriegsmarine unit has Swastikas depicted on flags or gun turrets. There will be ample historical photographic evidence for this being a truthful depiction of past reality (at parades or the like), hence, it's acceptable for me. But something that is meant to depict a ship where the in-game documentation shows "Name A" (WoWS Wiki, tech tree / armoury: the places where the gamer usually encounters the ship name) and it gets "Name B", where this "Name B" has unneeded Nazism connections is where I would have already drawn the line, it's not good anymore, as it appears as a factual error. I think that this kind of naming or symbol usage is not needed for making immersive art. I just checked a current replay from this ship, I see now from where the "Grossdeutschland" stems. @YabbaCoe@Crysantos, do you eventually have some insights to share about the development of this ship name, "Großer Kurfürst" that gets the "Grossdeutschland" moniker in its replays? Asking out of curiosity. Kind regards, Nightowl -
From NA - "Mouse makes a post every week about how crappy AA is in World of Warships: Week One"
Northern_Nightowl replied to Andrewbassg's topic in General Discussion
The main grievance about CV is not about the amount of damage they can deal, you know? It's IMHO about the quite unfair vision advantages they offer (permaspotting). But this factor doesn't really pay off into economics in-game, so it tends surely to get overlooked. Regards, Nightowl -
Mines - yay, nay, or simply blancmange?
Northern_Nightowl replied to Catpain_Lucifurr's topic in General Discussion
I'm outing myself for having voted "yes". This is because an idea on how to implement it just crossed my mind. Imagine that the mechanics of the air strike get recycled. Minelaying would thus be a consumable akin to the ASW air drops. I would even build it in a way to disregard the range and put on the ability to basically mine every watery map square (of course, every ship gets only a severely limited supply of mines. I meant that you wouldn't be limited on where to mine, but strong caps on how much). For balancing purposes (no immediate spawn mining), a longer loading time could be handy. This is a good idea because: - Back line camping could become a dangerous manoeuvre - CV movement may be preemptively restricted, so that counterplay moves with torpedoes (Asashio, 20km Shimakazes!) or (even blind fired) big guns at long range get more chances of success - Mining may be a balancing tool for a play with submarines - Mining is historically accurate How it could be countered: - Searches with hydro at somewhat of a range or the Mk.1 eyeball on short ranges. - Demining of known mines by secondary or AA battery fire (imagine that the concussion of a HE shells detonation does the trick). Balancing: Automatic usage (but switchable, AA off also means demining off), detection penalty up to the presently standard waterborne detection range, success rate below 100% but above 50%. - Protection by a new consumable to be added akin to repair teams: "degaussing" available up from T6 or T7 on every ship, with success rates in the range of 40 to 75% in reduction of mine triggering (mathematically somewhat similar to the magazine protection module that reduces the detonation chance by 70%). What do you think about this? Regards, Nightowl- 35 replies

I went and used some reserve doubloons to fetch some needed tokens and actually get both (one for free, the other one also, technically). But they are currently both port queens, I took them as collectibles, being historical ships. Regards, Nightowl

What Were Your Greatest Gaming Achievements Today ?
Northern_Nightowl replied to Hanszeehock's topic in General Discussion
For some months now, I expected that these Frenchmans with their forward armament, would suit myself well. Since earning the Strasbourg on a Christmas grind last year, I was fond of this ship, only set back by encountering T9 ships in Randoms (it's too soft for this). I got myself the Richelieu some days ago and met what I may call a self-fulfilling prophecy: it seems that I can indeed perform quite well in this BB (true, the statistical base is small, a single-digit number of battles until now, but it still give a nice feeling). The following screenshots are really recent: I just came out of a nice battle on "Two brothers", where I ran a captain with only 6 used skill points who's taking the classical survivability route. Regards, Nightowl -
I actually have the Nelson, Friesland and Ägir, grinded for a total of 2,375 milion Free XP. Additionally, I jumped the Friedrich der Große to unlock the Großer Kurfürst with roundabout 320.000 Free XP and spend in the regions of 300.000-400.000 FXP to speed up grinds, mostly for B hulls on ships. All XP were earned without converting ship XP using doubloons and these numbers span the time from my WoWS beginning until now. My balance stands right now at 640 139 FXP. So, you may count 3 to 5 months of daily playing and sometimes using Dragon flags to reach your goal of 1 Million FXP. Use and abuse the Narai, and, for a somewhat lesser intent, the Killer Whale operation! These make for an economically interesting grind. Yes, there are ships / camos speeding of the FXP earning. These stem for instance from the HSF cooperation, take the HSF Harekaze with the Y467 camo and the HSF Graf Spee with the W207 camo, each giving a bonus 100% on FXP. Regards, Nightowl

Report of unexpected behaviour, eventually software rights / UAC related
Northern_Nightowl posted a topic in General Discussion
Hello! I'm experiencing issues with the game software. Using the game center, a current update won't finish processing. I'm using a secondary computer right now, a Windows 10 Home laptop with a single HDD installed, hence no luxury of separated partitions or different physical storage media as on my main desktop. But it worked fine some time ago; I didn't use the laptop for playing for approximately 2 weeks. The game folder path is C:\Program Files\Wargaming\World_of_Warships_EU. I wanted to run it this morning and enountered the need that the game fetches a 4,37GB (size IIRC) update. I left the maching alone doing its things. Afterwards, I noticed an issue (screenshot to follow). I surmised that some OS updates may also be waiting (they did), so I restartet the laptop to allow their processing. Afterwards, the issue was still present: Recalling some recommendations to do an integrity check as posted in those other hotfix related threads, I wanted to install WGCheck. This try gave me clues about what may have gone wrong: While I could manually order the folder creation on C:\Program Files\Wargaming\ by accepting the UAC prompt, I got the "Unsufficient permissions" message when I tried to install the WGCheck there. Running the game center with admin rights won't solve the issues. I assume that something, likely some update but unsure whether it's on WG's side or on Microsoft's side, screwed up the software permissions. Regards, Nightowl -
[Poll] How do you like new "Dirigible Derby" Tier X 12 vs. 12 game mode?
Northern_Nightowl replied to Leo_Apollo11's topic in General Discussion
A single word sums up my opinion: "uninspiring". It's just another credit sink as a forced T10 mode and nothing more than a Randoms mode with a third kind of winning condition (capping for points and "sink 'em all" being the other ones). I won't play it often, if at all. True operations would have been the better investment, IMHO. Regards, Nightowl -
Marlborough - what an ugly experience!
Northern_Nightowl replied to Allanagtig's topic in General Discussion
AFAIK, you could restore every premium that you sold once per 3 month period, a single item per request to the customer support. You'll need a port slot and some credits that sum up to the amount you got for the selling. I grinded Repulse too and nearly managed a Kraken on the very first battle (using, IIRC, one of my 12 pointers from KGV or Warspite). While I still have to learn to cope with its relative fragility, its gunnery most often simply feels amazing, with shells actually landing there where you aimed. It's not spray-and-pray as in most other middle tier BB (Bad examples: Lyon, Normandie, König, Gneisenau, New York, the Spaghetti ships). I can't tell if this is the secret of the ship, but it will surely benefit from good aiming. Regards, Nightowl -
That could eventually be countered by a torpedo-heavy team: Schlieffen, Montana or Shikishima, a IJN cruiser or Napoli, a radar DD and a Shimakaze. Or am I on the wrong track, here? Regards, Nightowl

T7 Brawls - What to play then?
Northern_Nightowl replied to Kern0wchris's topic in General Discussion
I'm currently learning that the Myôkô is surprisingly effective for me in these brawls, even more that a Yorck or a Gneisenau. Regards, Nightowl -
Is V. Veneto playable?
Northern_Nightowl replied to anonym_ntfKigmJ0k9e's topic in General Discussion
Pro: Good speed. Pro: interesting ammunition (SAP) Relative pro: crawling smoke. HUGE con: Shotgun-like accuracy. I mean with this: you cannot count on getting hits even with perfectly straddling salvoes. Con: long reload, albeit not as long as in a Kansas. Relative con: eyesore early access camo (I don't want to have a flagpole sticking out of the bridge. The Alea iacta est paintwork is nicely made, though). I actually avoid playing my Veneto in Randoms, as I cannot work around it's nonexistent gun accuracy (grinded through Carraciolo in Narai), while being hampered by the relative fragility (North Carolina for accuracy or Bismarck for robustness are more suited for me). It may be usable in Coop, when you need some bits of BB made damage, either from the SAP loaded main battery or the secondaries. Regards, Nightowl -
Petition: Petropavlovsk needs LONGFIRE_BIGFLOOD
Northern_Nightowl replied to arttuperkunas's topic in General Discussion
Petro / Longfire + Bigflood = Red Adair, maybe? Well, I'd love to have some "boom" available to cap the Petro away. But as long as those pesky Petro dollars are flowing... Sorry, couldn't resist to make those puns. Regards, Nightowl, who concurs with the OP -
Is Duke Of York worth to get with coal?
Northern_Nightowl replied to CaravellaCaravan's topic in General Discussion
As gaming is something only about your own pleasure, do whatever you feel. Getting a ship you like is never bad. Regards, Nightowl -
I bet that on April, 1st, we'll get an operation named Salamis, showcasing DD with waterjet propulsion and nothing, but a ram. Regards, Nightowl

T5 brawls: what ships to play?
Northern_Nightowl replied to Camperdown's topic in General Discussion
As my usual pick in brawls: German hydro cruisers. At T5, this means Königsberg. I may give my Omaha also a run, or whatever else I like (probably T-22, Furutaka, Derfflinger). Regards, Nightowl -
