How to fast-train new Commanders?
Northern_Nightowl replied to Sir_Sinksalot's topic in General Discussion
For IJN commanders, you may have a HSF ship available: the Harekaze has cat content (Isoroku camo) for a boost of CXP. Thanks to it, my highest level captain has 20 points now, with roundabout 650k CXP to go before the 21. Please allow me to jump in with an additional question. I actually could immediately get there, to 21, by using up my accumulated CXP that I earned since I began to play. But is it worth it? How quickly can the refill be? Said commander is my Shimakaze guy (my first choice as mount to go for everything that mandates T10, like CW); my Harekaze is my presently second most played ship (behind the Königsberg, whose battle numbers stem from my "grinding by loosing" of the German cruiser line while being a beginner), with a WR of a 50,xx percent. If I were to satisfy CXP needs after an eventual resourceful push, I'd currently rather use the combo "Harekaze clad in Isoroku + Fullpointer guy" (I don't like the economy of T10). So, any advice? FPS limiter apparently not working
Northern_Nightowl replied to Northern_Nightowl's topic in General Discussion
Hello and thanks, I followed this way of global graphics driver settings (actually using an AMD software, as I have a Radeon FX580 card in my PC), putting a hard cap at 80 FPS and a soft cap between 50 and 80 FPS (depending on swiftness of scene changes) into effect. Fortunate side effect: I have much less ping spikes and disconnects now; I assume that the PCI-E WLAN card benefits from not being bathed this much in the warm exhaust air from the much better silenced graphic card just above it. Regards, Nightowl -
Hello! Since the last update, my game does not run on 75-77 FPS any more, it goes up to 120+x FPS at max settings. I don't like this, as the fan on my graphic card now runs wild and loud and makes my leg uncomfortably hot by the exhausted air. The option of limiting the FPS in the in-game settings doesn't have a noticeable effect, and neither does the 75 FPS option available in the ASLAIN modpack that I'm using. Does somebody have an idea on how to cap the game at the handy 75 FPS? I'm not afraid with editing INI files or the like if needed, as long as somebody points me to where to make a change. Regards, Nightowl

That's funny: the 3 times I saw a Neustrashimy on Red's side, I managed to make it my prey 2 times and nearly took him down the third. This while driving Fletcher, torpedo geared. First encounter: I outsmarted the Neustrashimy's smoke deployment and deleted him with fishes after he stopped and while he sat in his smoke. The second and third encounters were more running battles including gunnery, but I still torped them for good effect. I did not see much carry potential by those players, in fact, I'm rather hoping to have one of those as opponent in Fletcher. Regards, Nightowl

[Poll] Did you buy the Tier XI "Superships"?
Northern_Nightowl replied to Leo_Apollo11's topic in General Discussion
Only one ship in the T11 line-up entices my interest: Yamagiri, as it looks like T11 is necessary for clan battles. But until I have enough credits (I'm rather going to spend on grinds and regrinds), my Shimakaze must be enough of a torpedo vessel. When the Yamagiri eventually makes landfall in my port, I'll look to use a spare commander, likely duplicating my Shima skill set. It worked nice back when the Yamagiri was a rental ship and usable in Ranked. Regards, Nightowl -
Given that submarines will likely stay, I like the OP's suggestions and answered. Generally, I'd like to see WoWS getting more distance from arcadey modes (high speed subs, instant spotting, technologically unsound mechanisms as speedboosts, reload boosters, rock penetrating radar) and becoming more of a simulation. Such a simulation should and must have tradeoffs between realism and gameplay, but the current balance is IMHO too far on the arcade side. Regards, Nightowl

just what we needed/s And you thought subs are already fast...

Having read this, I feel like there MUST be fans of both alternative history and Tom Clancy's Red Storm Rising at WG's. It strongly recalled for me the episode of those American 688's going in to bombard the bases of Soviet naval aviation with cruise missiles to relieve the pressure on Atlantic convoys and escaping afterwards, playing cat-and-mouse with Tangos, Whiskeys, Romeos, Alfas and surface combatants (some frigates). This, "yoloing assassin", really looks like an Alfa SSN or like what was described as a Tango class lying stealthily in wait beneath a frigate... We'll see what may come. Shkval supercavitation fish, when? Regards, Nightowl -
So you're literally saying that if somebody simply hasn't the resources to buy anti-detonation flags, this person has to stay away from Ranked and maybe Randoms? That's a tad too elitistic for me. I'd like to differentiate. If somebody is trying to spot or laying smokescreens for his team or making useful torpedo runs but gets detonated in the course of action, then it's only a lost gamble on RNG and not much of an error by the gamer itself, as he was trying his best. And what about the module that reduces the detonation chance by 70%, if you're using it and still go boom, would you say that this was a bad play? Regards, Nightowl

There is no thing as "cheap temporary camouflage", as the ones available for credits are now all at 22500 coins, since 3 or 4 update iterations ago IIRC. And there are people around that have to manage their stocks of consumables (coins, coal, flags) and have to keep a tight watch on their spending. So, while I agree that anti-detonation flags should have a high priority, you shouldn't despise gamers that have to take the risk to run without them due to resource scarcity on their account, as long as it's visible that they were making the best effort possible for a win. First game ever with my Amagi that I bought just before the battle. As I did not have an IJN commander in reserve to be assigned on the BB and neither one that I wanted to switch away from his previous mount, I had to recruit a zero pointer and ran the battle with him. And as I had only 77k credits left, I didn't even use a full set of modules. With all there hampering prerequisites, I am quite pleased with the outcome. It's as if I had some kind of protected matchmaking, saving me from being decidedly engaged and having some broadsides to get earned by my 41cm guns... Let the results speak now (the secondaries kill was on the low HP sub, my ASW planes were underway and didn't have the time to drop): From Nil to Five, the captain went: Ship equipment: Regards, Nightowl -
What is the last fun "Premium" ship that you actually bought (and that was available ONLY for Doubloons or Real Money in Premium Shop)?
Northern_Nightowl replied to Leo_Apollo11's topic in General Discussion
HSF Harekaze, first edition. First money ship (now in company of HSF Spee, Alaska B and Constellation), but easy and by far my favourite ship for which I had to pay, even high ranking when considering freemiums and tech-tree ships. I got my other doubloon-only ships (standard Spee, Dunkerque, De 7 Provincien and soon-to-come Atlântico and likely Puerto Rico) with coins from crates, Ranked or birthday cashback, but those won't displace my small, little DD in its cutes camos from his favourite role. Regards, Nightowl -
Why do you not see the obvious? A is for (game) administrator, guaranteeing a win. And any B and C may be one of the bi*** and cu**s to entertain the D, drunkards, needed as targets for the E, the L33ts, if they aren't on the F***. SCNR and regards, Nightowl

A detailed look at ships. Neptune
Northern_Nightowl replied to Andrewbassg's topic in General Discussion
Easy. Make it carry a good load of cordite and black powder primers, like the HMS Indefatigable, HMS Invincible, HMS Queen Mary and HMS Hood did, and send it into battle. This will show for a fast fly-by. Afterwards, it's a proud member of Neptune's Underworld. Regards, Nightowl -

What Were Your Greatest Gaming Achievements Today ?
Northern_Nightowl replied to Hanszeehock's topic in General Discussion
Yesterday and the day before yesterday, I finally got 2 prompts for a survey after the battle with the question "How pleased were you with the battle you just played?" while I was bottom tier in a +/-2 matchmaking. So I finally got the chance to give the worst possible rating for this kind of matchmaking, one of the Bismarck loss (what shall you do in a Bismarck against T10 in a map with a lot of open water?) and one second-from-worst for the +/-2 MM in Richelieu (at least, this BB has the range, medium accuracy and bowtanking profile to better perform in my hands against T10). The +/-2 MM is IMHO the baddest thing possible for cruisers and really nasty for BB (much heavier opponents HP-wise with often larger guns) and DD (ubiquity of radar). That must be done away with as soon as possible. Regards, Nightowl -
[POLL] How did you like the Tier X 9 vs. 9 "Brawl" WoWs v0.11.3 "Round 1" ?
Northern_Nightowl replied to Leo_Apollo11's topic in General Discussion
Triple factorial cubed FULL ACK to the sentence I bolded in the quote. Why? Tier 10 means repetitive ship assortments all over again and again: Russian radar cruisers clad in Stalinium, Montana and Yamato in various combinations and Shimakaze, Z-52, French speedracer DD or eventually a Daring. That's totally unfun and makes the battles dull, stale and boring. No way for tactics besides island camping and attritional shell slinging. Besides: on T10, there's nothing to grind, so an incentive for brawling is taken away. The brawls in T7 or T8, where you were at most 3 people where much much much better. You could realistically try to outsmart the foe (imagine or recall a 1-vs.-1 in Epicenter mode on 2 Brothers: "When will you drive where to cap and make points?"), the battle results were mostly gained much quickier (higher turnaround), and you could do some grinding. I miss this kind of brawls. Regards, Nightowl -
[Poll] Did you buy / are you planning to buy "Superships" ?
Northern_Nightowl replied to Leo_Apollo11's topic in General Discussion
I can take 90% of these word and repeat them. Crappy uninspiring ships: Hannover, Satsuma, Annapolis (not tested the others). Didn't get the trick on how to do good with them. Totally screwed economy from my viewpoint, as good as a room heating device burning banknotes. Single ship that may entice my interest in the future, if and when I feel like spending the credits: Yamagiri. Some forumite put it as "Shimakaze on steroids", it carried me all the way from Rank 5 through the qualification and up to Silver Ranked when the loaned ships could be used in a past season. I have two quick questions (line reset and TYL container related)
Northern_Nightowl replied to ThePurpleSmurf's topic in General Discussion
My bet would be "not possible". My game GUI is set to German, my mother tongue. And there, there is a difference between the description "Versuchen Sie ihr Glück" (try your luck) on containers for XP, with the addendum of "more chance to get a super container but eventually less rewards", and "Kleiner Container" (small container) offered as login reward. So, the login reward is likely only a gambling upon getting 900 coal or only 4 flags. Regards, Nightowl -

Guinea pigs against submarines
Northern_Nightowl replied to Pepe_LePew's topic in General Discussion
WoWS in general and submarines, superships etc. are a good example of Bananaware. So, it's not surprising at all that we users get used and maybe abused for testing stuff. We'll have to cope with it. Regards, Nightowl- 7 replies
