CV+4DDs and 2 subs and the rest are BBs
CapnGebs replied to Benedictus_de_Suede's topic in General Discussion
I had that exact mm last night in my tier 6 Icarus. Bottom tier, perma-spotted by plains and subs. -
I like to play a mixture of random and coop. I dont know if anyone else has noticed this but when I play late evening and there are only 1 or 2 players and the rest are bots, the bots on the enemy team seem better than the bots on the human team. I have tried bringing my random play into coops, being cautious, positioning, using cover etc but very quickly the enemy bots have killed the player side bots. Leaving a 2 against 9 game. This has led me to change my approach to coop games. I have to hit them fast and take out some enemy bots quickly at the cost of HP so that the remaining bots on my team have a numbers advantage. This could explain *some* of the players in coop charging straight at the enemy.

I've just received a bunch of themed ships, probably for the halloween event and they have taken up 3 of the spare ship slots I had. This isnt the first time, its happened before. Is anyone else seeing this?

Great advice, thanks!

People may already know this but just in case it helps someone... If you need port slots there are a group of (I think monthly) missions. Each of the missions just says something like complete 5 other missions/complete 10 other missions etc. Several (I think 3) of the mission stages rewards are free port slots. Its fairly easy to achieve by just doing the daily missions for a few days. At the start of the month I tend to focus on doing the daily missions to complete the monthly target and get a few free port slots. All the missions I mention can be done in random or coop from I think tier 5 - 10. I had been sitting on 12 available port slots doing the above but just dropped to 9.

I'll take some perma-camos of they are going spare :) especially if someone could make some for lower tiers.

I got Valkyrie Gale Heracles Whirlwind Hector Avenger 3 must have come with slots but 3 didn't.

A Note of Appreciation for Wargaming

Maybe they are perma-camos? -
"In December 2016, players in our European community started regularly organizing the competitive King of the Sea tournament." and one of the most commonly known languages in Europe is English. "Wargaming Group Limited" Founded 2 August 1998; 23 years ago in Minsk, Belarus " 20 offices globally and development studios, the largest of which is located in Minsk" I think its reasonable for one of the 2 official languages to be that of the game designers don't you?

I've just had a thought (I have to make the most of it they don't happen often). Since WG has established that homing torps are a thing and clearly everyone must be enjoying them, how about giving every ship with torpedoes a "ping" mechanism that can hit submerged subs. Then allow the DD that is hunting the sub to launch its own torps and have them home on the sub even when it is submerged? Taste of their own medicine.

you earn too little silver compared to the repair costs
CapnGebs replied to The_Ricko's topic in General Discussion
Not quite, discussion started about getting silver and it was then pointed out that mid-tiers are almost guaranteed to give silver profit. So playing mid-tiers to get silver as the OP requested rather than "muh reasons". It was also then suggested that one of many metrics about performance could be silver profit in battles. If a player is struggling to make a silver profit around tier 6 and tier 7 they may be able to improve their game and hence increase silver gains. -

I think I agree with most of what you've said WWDragon. However, in answer to the OPs posting I would still say it is possible to earn silver since that is what they are after in their posting. Again I agree, XP is the official mechanic for advancement. But what I am suggesting is as a player I am able to extrapolate information about my playing ability from many areas of the game. One of those areas is if I am continually losing credits it may suggest that I could improve my game which would in turn gain me higher silver rewards per battle. I am not suggesting everything should be gauged by silver but I am highlighting silver in this thread as it is what the opening poster was asking about. -

"so I dont need lectures about how cruisers feel" Relax, I'm not giving anyone lectures. You asked a question so I gave my thoughts on your question. "T6 cruiser usually has better concealment and speed then T6 BBs" This is true, however shooting at the BB will remove the concealment advantage, as will be getting spotted by a destroyer for example. I dont know about you but when I captain a cruiser I tend not to sail around in open water shooting at top tier battleships. I put some sort of cover between myself and a battleship that would otherwise citadel me. "T8 BB usually has BETTER concealment, BETTER guns and BETTER speed then T6 BB" Again this would be more critical if it was a match with just the 2 battleships. But given that most of the time the battleships are spotted by other cruisers or destroyers (or these days aircraft or subs) especially when they fire their "better guns" which removes their concealment advantage it may be possible with map awareness to position defensively against that enemy battleship. Of course we cant always do everything perfectly but joining a match and finding I am bottom tier is never a reason to just give up. "designed around making you open your wallet" of course, I expected nothing less. They are a large company with a lot of employees who deserve a salary for working full time. The game is provided free so they try and incentivise us to pay money on extras. Its up to us whether we pay or not. I manage quite happily without paying. So it is possible to play and slowly collect resources (silver/doubloons/freeXp). -
Generally yes, if a ship gets an extra ability it loses something else. But I'm not sure why we have the concept of ship launched torpedoes only being able to hit surface ships. Submerged ships were added to the game and torpedoes should just be tweaked to also be able to hit subs.

I mean as with any situation we need to choose our battles and work around our limitations. I am no expert and I'm sure there are others who could suggest some good tactics for this sort of situation, things we learn as we play more. Your particular example is exactly the same thing faced by me in a t6 cruiser caught in the open by the enemy t6 battleship that can overmatch all my armour. As the cruiser player I have to learn to avoid or hide from enemy battleship guns whilst still contributing to the team. Its difficult but thats one of the things to learn as I progress up the tiers. But one example could be if there is a t8 on the enemy team maybe you could position your t6 ship so that there is a land mass between you and them whilst you are instead firing at the enemy cruiser harrassing your friendly destroyer. -
It wouldnt add masses of torps. I'm not suggesting giving more ships torpedoes. I'm just suggesting ships that already have torpedoes can now fire them at subs effectively. If anything it would mean less torpedoes for the other ships to worry about as the torpedoes would be deep underwater chasing subs rather than aimed at a battleship for example. I agree its a bit of a silly idea but I would suggest it is no sillier than the homing torps in the first place :)

I am not suggesting that this is a cunning plan on the part of WG to push people to learn the game at lower tiers before advancing in tiers. On the contrary I am saying that completely ignoring WG, the store, doubloons, buying stuff with money etc, as a player if I am constantly losing silver at a tier it may be an indicator that I am not skilled enough to advance to the next tier yet and I will probably benefit from playing and learning some more skills at my current tier. It is true that it is possible to be in a match with ships 2 tiers higher but this isnt always the case. Indeed you may be in a battle where you are 2 tiers higher than the ship you are shooting at. Although a ship 2 tiers higher will be stronger I would dispute the "vastly more powerful". Guns (if aimed well) are still going to hurt that ship, torps will still hurt and cause flooding etc. And I know there are a lot of complaints about the matchmaker but usually there is a reasonably equal distribution of tiers on both sides. If you dont think you are being effective against a ship 2 tiers higher you could reposition to counter the enemy ship the same or lower tier than you. When I started playing I thought the same thing. "Play tier 10 as it guarantees I will be top tier". This is true. However, what that doesnt take into account is I would be a raw potato in a t10 ship that I didnt fully understand playing against people like Camperdown who have over 4000 battles experience. There are also a load of extra mechanisms that complicate that tier that make it much more complicated to play for example the profusion of radar ships if I am in a destroyer. I guess in a round about way I am trying to say please dont see tier 10 as "the only fun tier". It is just a tier with a slightly different set of challenges. Fun can be had at all tiers if we just get into the right mindset. For example my favourite tier currently as mentioned is tier 6 and I find the battles fun and engaging. Sometimes I am top tier, sometimes bottom tier. One of the things to learn is how to contribute to your team regardless. -

Thats kind of the point that some people are trying to make. You play T6 until you are actually good at it and then move up to tier7. When you get good at tier 7 you should be able to make a silver profit there and save for the tier 8 and so on. As for it being "a tedious task", why would tier6 be tedious but suddenly tier 10 is exciting? If you look at them as just other battles you can play maybe you would enjoy them. Seeing all ships as nothing but a tedious grind to get to tier 10 "where the fun starts" is not the best approach. As for 100 battles being a lot, ask some of the old salty sea dogs who played from the beginnning how long it originally took to get to tier 10. I'm pretty sure it used to take a lot longer. Any volunteers with some numbers? -

As Ronchabale said continually losing credits can sometimes be an indicator that someone is playing at too high a tier for their current ability level. Theres nothing wrong with having a lower ability level than the unicums out there and theres nothing wrong with playing lower tiers. Just step back a few tiers and work on your game. I currently play quite happily around the tier 5 and 6 level and we are pretty much guaranteed to make silver at those tiers. As an indicator I think I usually make about 100k silver profit from a tier 6 battle and I'm no expert. -
Well yes that would be the ideal but I cant see that happening. So if WG and sub captains insist homing torps and subs are fine then let homing torps be fired at the subs too. Surely they would enjoy that :)
-
During the course of playing last night I completed some combat mission that gave me 2 subs. (I was disappointed to then find out the mission reward was the "rental" of 2 subs). Subs havent been fun to play against but I was curious how they worked. So rather than subject anyone to me floundering about trying to figure them out I created a training room. Only to then find that the subs are classed as "special" ships and cannot be used in a training room. Surely when you introduce ships with completely new mechanics like aircraft in carriers or diving and pinging in subs the most sensible thing for a new captain to do is take them into a training room first to get the hang of the controls. Blocking the ship type from training rooms is such a bizarre idea. If someone wants to experiment having never sailed them before they are forced to at least take them into a co-op battle and spoil a teams fun for 20 minutes.
-
Thanks for the clarification Seraphice. Its always good to understand the reasoning behind a limitation. It is a shame that the training maps couldnt be updated in time for release of the subs. I did give a sub one go in a co-op hoping I could pull my weight but getting the hang of the torps and pings was a little tricky and I think I was lucky and managed to get a single torp hit. I'll have to wait until I get a sub in the training room before trying again as it cant have been fun for the other players having a sub on their team that couldnt contribute.
-
Surely if people take ships into training rooms and enjoy them they are more likely to buy things for them? For example I wouldnt spend credits or dubloons on ship components or camos if I couldnt even test out a ship. Which makes me think WG are missing an opportunity. If every account were able to play every premium ship in 2 battles (or some number) people could try them out. Some people might try a ship and like it enough to then purchase it from the store. [Us devs should always embrace testers. Far easier to chat to a tester and see the problem first hand and fix the bug whilst in development than wait until after release and try and reproduce via a report from a customer in an email or forum posting.]

Surely, logically "Hydro-acoustic search" should pinpoint subs all the time they are within range? Hydroacoustics - Wikipedia

Wait, what?! RPF doesnt work on submerged subs? I was saving up the commander skills for my DD captains to get RPF in the hopes I could use it to find them. Darn it.
