Pings don't have limits, but my torpedoes do have 50 sec cooldown. DCP in every DD, cruiser and BB has (AFAIK, correct me if I'm wrong here) unlimited uses, so I'm not making my target waste any resource apart from a cooldown. And regarding this cooldown, pulling some information from the wiki and assuming it's accurate: DDs have 40 sec cooldown + 5 from action time on DCP so they can shrug off sonar pings pretty much on demand if they didn't use it before. Cruisers have 60 sec cooldown + 5 from action time, only 15s more than my torpedo cooldown. Pretty narrow margin for action there. BBs have 80 sec cooldown +10 to +20 from action time on DCP so yes, they are more vulnerable, but also tend to be further away and thus harder to reach. If they are easy to reach then probably it would be a better idea just to shotgun it with normal torps. I know that forcing the target to use DCP just to clear a ping is a good thing because even if I dont damage it, fires, floodings and (indirectly) incapacitations from my teammates will. But the thing is that firing torpedos doesn't even do that, because most of the time and as far as my experience goes (which is not very far, that's true ) the target can dodge those torpedos without using DCP.

Well, I don't really know what changes have been made lately because I started playing a month ago or so. I'd like to think I'm an open minded person, but even if I am that wouldn't be a key factor here Regarding which class I find harder to hit... I tend to avoid targeting DDs so I don't have much of an opinion about targeting them. It's true that on DDs I've landed some torps which I thought would miss and somehow didn't, but I'm not gonna build an opinion on that for now. Between cruisers (I assume that you meant cruisers instead of CV) and BBs, I'd say I find cruisers harder to hit. If you meant between carriers and battleships, then I find battleships harder.

I'm pretty new around here and I don't have much experience with subs yet (I've just got U-190 a couple of days ago). But, as of today, I don't get why homing torps receive so much hate. Landing a double ping is not easy; if you get one, DCP can remove it; and even if I manage to keep double ping up, more often than not my opponents are able to dodge them regardless of their positioning and ping location. I guess that my inexperience is playing a big role here, but still...

    Homing torps

Hello there, fellow captains. I'm quite the newbie around here, have been playing for a month or so now. Until now I played mainly DDs, specifically Fubuki. A week ago I decided to get a submarine to try it out and started grinding my way down to the U-69. I found landing dumbfire torps pretty hard as it needs you to predict where your opponent is going to be later on, which requires quite a bit of experience and awareness I currently lack, and when I saw that subs have homing torpedos I thought I was going to have an easier time with them. I also checked on the internet and found a lot of hate about them. People find them OP and frustrating to play against, so I thought that these homing torpedos were going to be too powerful. Until now however, I've seen that more often than not everybody is able to dodge my homing torps with little effort, because of that "homing shutdown when they get close" thing I think. Usually I fire my torpedoes in the general direction that I would fire dumbfire torps in intervals of 0,5s or so, I wait until the torps have travelled half the way and then I start pinging the target as close to the middle of the ship as possible. Am I missing something here, or aren't homing torpedos as good as I thought in the first place?

Another thing I've seen is this: For BBs, the homing cut-off distance is much bigger. That's why even though they can't steer sharply they still can dodge torpedos. Maybe I'll try to hunt down more cruisers too, since with double ping they "only" have a margin of 600 meters to dodge them...

    Homing torps

Exactly! That's what I see all people doing most of the time and always results in a succesful dodge. Especially this: However, even if I ping the stern or bow the result is not very different, maybe I get to land one of the torps but no more than that. Next time I'll try firing torps with more time between each other, hopefully that way they'll be able to dodge the first ones but not the 3rd or 4th... hopefully.

    Homing torps

Just finished a game in which I pursued a BB for 10 minutes straight, double pinging it and trying to sink it. He dodged every single torpedo I've thrown at him, after or before pinging. If a Tier 6 BB can do that I can't even begin to think how will it be when I reach higher tiers, since Tier 8 and 10 subs have bigger homing cut-off ranges and people will be more experienced. It seems that I can only get any damage done when opponents are not paying attention or don't know how to dodge torpedos, so for now I think I'm done with submarines. At least until I get some knowledge about how to counter those dodge maneuvers.

    Homing torps

Thanks for the reply! I know I made a lot of mistakes in that game. Keep in mind however that it was a mock 1v1 to try torp mechanics, I got shot by the secondary batteries because I forgot that my friend isn't able to control them The reason why I sometimes don't use the torp guide is that I wanted to try different trajectories for them to see if they were harder to dodge that way. Regarding target lock loss, due to ping expire or DCP use, I don't have those cases in mind. I know the problem there is losing ping signal. My concern is always with torps keeping 1 or 2 ping signal until the end, just like the 2 ping miss around 16:30. I guess that my problem (or one of them) is that I tend to focus on targets that may not be as distracted as they should. A target that's not under fire is a target that can put all his attention on dodging my torps. I'll keep on torping and trying to improve my skills. Hopefully I won't get frustrated too soon, finishing a game with 0 torp impacts can be a pretty hard punch on the self confidence.

Here ya go. At 16:30 remaining on the clock more or less. 20230610_222035_PGSS206-U-69_00_CO_ocean.wowsreplay My friend was using a North Carolina though, not a Colorado.

I've just tried with a friend. Pinged him twice, fired my torpedos. He started steering left with a Colorado and the torpedos didn't even get close to him.

Well... it turns out they can dodge. I've just tried to sink one and he dodged my homed torps three times just by steering...

I've heard that it's better to ping after launch, so that the target gets to know that you're shooting at him as late as possible. And I keep pinging after launch because I try to get that double sonar hit... but I keep pinging different sections of the ship. I need more practice in that regard Right now I've played a game in which I caught a BB broadside moving rightwards. I launched my torps, pinged his midship a couple of times early on and waited to see what happened. When the torps where getting close, the BB just started steering left away from me and the torps passed by his right side with no struggle for him whatsoever, not a single torpedo landed. In fact, I think that if I hadn't pinged him and let the torps sail without homing at least I would've landed one torp or two. That's what bugs me, the homing part more often that not, at least in my really scarce experience, doesn't help much or is even detrimental because it lets the target know that torps are coming and also manipulate their direction.
