So, to win it you simply take a low tier CV?
-
No, it is because shooting HE at a big fat BB might mean 30K. And everybody has to cover service cost.... BTW I always wait until they shoot two, those use DCP, then I set them on fire and then I make a nice profit. OK after that I go kill DDs and other crap.
-
Yeah so it wouldn't really solve that much. Agreed. Especially the "fill in from above" I find absolutely toxic. Finally a plane gets shot, hey presto the replacement is there. I do. It really could throw off the aim. Torps would go criss-cross. Bombs would completely miss the fattest and slowest BB. Ehhh they didn't have rockets so no telling what they'd do. Maybe shoot their own planes. Old RTS could also be manual, but most used autodrop. In fact, a tater-tot also has problems aiming, another skill gap. Man I have seen tater-torps miss broadside Hood in reeework, one going forward and one aft of Hood. I don't think this is valid either, if you adjust in the last 3 secs the dispersion goes wayyyyy off. Also, on Kaga (4 torps) it is damn hard to hit them all. If Kaga had 5, that fifth would be useless. It was impossible to avoid RTS cross-drops, because if you managed to "un-arm" the left ones, you'd get hit by the right ones. The only way was triple the speed, and there were no ships that could (maybe some Frenchies, now). Yes you could get lucky... steer left, avoid all... and then avoid the ones that came from the right. In the Reework you can still un-arm the torps, and such a cross-drop is no longer possible. Something similar is possible though, drop torps behind so the ship has to go in a straight line, then drop from the side. A smart (and fast...) enough ship sees it coming and will choose to just eat one of the rear-dropped torps. Most CVs I cannot (semi-) crossdrop with anyway, unless it is on a slow fat old US BB.

It would just mean most CVs move off to A1 and stay there never to bee seen again. Getting caught usually happens to potats, OK sometimes I potate as well. But you'll not catch me with half squadrons or something. If they start hunting me, it is usually because my team is already dead and it's "you are the last hope" time. Or sometimes I have a brainfart or get a bit too greedy.... or lazy. THIS is really the main problem. In RTS days, you could click a squadron, and it would shoot down some random plane. And this would leave a gap in the drop, often large enough to escape if you steered well. Using DEF AA sort of scared them and messed up the aim. Nowadays: last plane in the group dies first. No gaps, auto-replacement. Not even worse aiming. They're only gonna affect the lesser players. You'll not get near a good player until the game is lost anyway. true. But it would mean the lesser players have to take it, and the better ones do not. And as such they'd lead to even bigger skill gap.

Yes Nelsons armour leaves a lot to be desired - eats HE like crazy - that is why they have a zombie-heal. However if you manage to smack them with AP there isn't much to heal... and as you have already thought of they do need to show a lot of that fat broadside to use the 3rd turret. Also they are slow AF. Result: I managed to circle around a Nelson and AP-citadel him through his butt with a Fiji (I think, it was a cruiser anyway). Too bad a DD took him away, I'd have liked to finish that piñata.... Yup they'll do fine in Ops against lower tier ships. Too bad really, the ship deserves better. But if you are good and have island-waifu down to an art you can wreck stuff with those fat guns & great HE. At least, if RNGesus accepted your herd of sheep...

I admire your honesty... got Smolensk, too? There was a 2-point captain skill, that enabled you to launch them anyway. If tomato, the CV will have less planes to deal damage with anyway. Would be like ships pottering around with half-powered engines, guns out and such. Not many can pull off that trick with the US HE bombs. I suspect it is there though because when you took the TiTS-rockets they were quite ineffective against DDs. And let's be honest: taking half of a DD delivers the same XP that taking half of a BB does. Now, which is easier. And guess what is less risky. Duh. Yep. We get load after load of new ships, but same old maps and stuff. We have seen form Operations that they can do: - Convoys; - Land based forts; - Harbour Defence; - Minefields; - unloading docks; - repair ships; - Shallows/sandbanks... I'm thinking more about the environment of the game. This "circles in the sea" thing is getting kinda stale. Why no "repair zones" that you'd have to occupy, and such stuff?

The "problem" there is more or less the players there. Hunting DDs with rockets is (was!) very simple and relatively well rewarded. As a consequence I saw lots of CV-players doing nothing but killing the DDs, and then failing at killing anything else. In the lower tiers they managed to do something to CA/CL and BBs but not the higher ones. Mostly due to being incapable to avoid FLAK in any way. So all they did was kill DDs and then muck around some. Since they have nerfed the rockets (aiming) it is probably less so. I even saw a lot of DDs try to hunt CV. Next up, their detection is gonna be even less. And yes that makes it harder to get them... but not for the better CV -players. Also, those will not even be afraid of a Halland. I'm not - I can crap over Halland anytime. It is just a matter of worth it or not. EDIT: I agree that CVs in CB was a dumb idea though, the way they did it. It lead to a very very stale meta, especially at T10. T6 was kinda workable. Sort of... But that also started to turn into one Ryujo and 6 Graf Spees a lot. Boooooring!!! The main thing, 7 ships is just not enough with a CV - or at least a BB and a DD should be obligatory.

I wonder how good that is, managed to get a decent performance from old Lolorado at Narai, but the thing is you can only do the normal route and not any "side actions" due to the... well... great speed... Although the punch that it packs is certainly worth it. Don;t hit any islands though, they'll be all out of ships if you reach the harbour.
-
To both remarks, one fits: I guess the daily dose of sheep for RNGesus is one of the main things in this game anyway. I'll make sure to send a jar of superlube with it just to make sure.
-
Yup. 100% agree. I think, real bad. Now already they think "let's go hunt CV" and then they (two or three) come after the CV. Mind these were not 40% players, I checked. But of course they got detected... boom-boom-boom. Meanwhile they didn't do what their team needed them to do. Bad. IMO it would be better if WG made spotting-by-planes same as spotting when in a storm. Say 8km (and this can be changed/balanced) around, ships would see what the CV spotted, rest gets minimap.

I usually pick Hood for Narai, and after the Missouri gets sunk I immediately go for the CV. Sometimes I even manage to snipe him while he hasn't even left. Often I smash him because he is just coming out on the right side, leaving the DD and the CA just going "WTF". I suppose any fast & accurate BB will do though. If I can't snipe the CV, I'll deal with him first and then finish off the DD and CA - entering the harbour the same way the CV came out. That way I'm attacking the main group from the rear (you wil have their broadsides...). Usually ending up ramming the Lolorado which is the last one to get going. Take care not to do it before the transports have unloaded enough troops.

Seems to me those two will rust in port though without AFT being effective on cruisers.
-
Good tip, didn't realise that one yet. It might become the BBQgrad now.
-
Yes, pretty much insane, eh? And then there was me being sooo happy finally having that AFT on my Flint. Duh.
-
Never happened to me at 20km, and I never managed to do it either. Then again I have Audacious maybe 2 weeks now. DID happen to me in the IJN carrier. Then again... here's Lexington at very close range. Quite sturdy. But Lexi is supposed to be a battlecruiser anyway. But the topic starter was about > 20 km SNIPING, I do not see that happening. @Beastofwar (his friend, actually) might be correct here, at 20km, what matters most - RNG or calculations?
-
Yes. That is the correct explanation of what is happening. It is also why I tend to take out CVs and Smolensk and other sneaky stuff. At least you can farm some damage/XP, WR is completely useless.
-
Well, good luck on that - it might work only on the Japanese CVs, since the US is based on a battlecruiser. And the Brits were heavily armoured... so were the (well, was the one) German CV. Lower tier CVs were based on cruisers and even freighters. But low tier BB guns do not reach that far, usually. But you could try hitting Ranger with guns from North Carolina, which actually works. Also on Ryujo - but not on Ark Royal. You'll not get citadels from that one unless up close.
-
Many times I suspected that Phoenix of being a T10 in disguise. I'm now quite sure that is how they made the Smolensk.
-
Well... I have seen one kill the other in a straight fight, mostly up to the player I guess. I've seen one troll a Stalingrad to death, and they are more annoying than a Shima to me when I drive a BB/CA/CL/CV. The only naughtier one IMO is Daring. But that's just me as a non-DD player, I play them (very very mediocre) but upto T6 (and somehow WG gave me a T8 Silliwangi, what am I gonna do with it...). The advantage of Somers, it is still a Premium, so you can take it into T10 randoms, without going "if my team taters it will cost me XXXX credits". That also might be a considerable thing, these days...

What Were Your Greatest Gaming Achievements Today ?
BLUB__BLUB replied to Hanszeehock's topic in General Discussion
Is this normal or have I found my "lucky ship". Only a few times out so far, and I made plenty mistakes... I like playing cruisers though... so maybe... naaahhhh I'm probably just lucky. -

Yes, CVs in co-op do not really work. Maybe the German ones do but so far I found nothing else. If you manage 50K ever that will be really good (or you had a dumb team and you got the occasion to bomb everything). What I did was rush forward but on the flank that helped a bit. But randoms is better... well... sort of. -
I diggit... @ZeuSueZ1337 so that is why I wanted it... Flint. If you can find a ship that you'll probably like, take that one. This one just fits me. It is T7, which I play most (T5-6-7-8, but mostly 6-7). And it is a cruiser. I like Leander, Fiji, Edinburgh, Dallas et cetera. So... well... THIS. Must say though it is what I expected it to be. Not all ships are, and meta sometimes changes.
-
As far as I know there are 4 DDs that are TopDog for CB, - Daring (after no longer needing IFHE, can take RL) - Gearing (always good and still is) - Somers (torpsoup and can actually shoot too) - Shimakaze (because torpsoup) When there are no CVs, Kleber... maybe. But I'm no DD main by a long shot and I just arrange them in "order of nuisance".
-
I don't play DDs, but have seen Somers in lots of CBs. It is (with the right build) sort of like a Shima that can actually shoot back. As in: most Shima pilots do not even realise they have guns. Somers makes good torp soup, too.
-
CVs would kill a lot more if they weren't spotting. At least half of the stuff I try to finish gets "kill secured" just before my drop hits it. I had games where I could have had 8 kills except my planes were too slow and shells were faster. But they could finish him because my planes were spotting him.
