You are either good or bad and fact is that players like Smegger if he played sub himself would never be able to make them work despite how supposedly broken they are. Because lack of skill. Lootboxes have took a different form. Diablo immortal disguises them as short playable content which you can only gather the good loot from lootbox style by spending premium currency. So you don't get to buy the rng directly but have to play through a short segment first before getting "rewarded" with the rng. If you don't pay the lesser currency or premium currency you are very very very unlikely to get anything worthwhile. So yeah. They are simply evolving. WG will follow soon too
