    Poll: Puerto Rico Grind

I don't mind the directive requiring a diverse set of ships as long as all lines are at least treated somewhat equally. It seems a bit odd and rather random that out of soon to be four T10 ships in my port (all from different nations and covering three classes), only one is actually applicable for the tasks I quoted. So I hope the tasks in directive 7 are at least opened up for the "missing" tech tree lines or the tier restriction is lightened a bit.

Forgot the Somers. But... @MrConway, @Tanatoy, is it really supposed to be like this? If my count isn't off, you can hypothetically have in your port as many as ten of the twenty-five Tier X tech tree ships and still be unable to complete the last directive. It's one thing to have a directive that's T10 exclusive, but shouldn't there at least be specific tasks that can be completed regardless of which lines you've chosen to take to T10?

    Italian pizza and torps

Tbh, if I have the choice between taking "friendly" torps and turning to give broadside to a good portion of the enemy team, I'll take the torps.

    Smolensk AA op

Njet comrade. We cannot have Glory of Soviet Union be vulnerable to Capitalist Western aircraft carriers.

That's a very nice ship you have there. It would be a shame if something happened to it.

FYI: There is no such word as "overexaggerate". The word you're looking for is "exaggerate".

    Poll: Puerto Rico Grind

One thing is requiring you to have grinded multiple lines to T10, but at least it shouldn't be dependent on you having accidentally picked the "right" lines to grind. For the heck of it, here are the T10 tech tree ships that will not help you with these tasks (potentially leaving you with a max of 3 tasks possible to complete if you happen to have a pan-euro premium lying around): -Hindenburg -Yamato -Z-52 -Shimakaze -Harugumo -Kremlin -Gearing -Des Moines -Worcester -Moskva And if you happen to have Stalingrad, Smolensk or Salem lying around... well, they're not going to help you either.

    HSF Harekaze vs Asashio

Which, while it does have a very high weeb factor on an already fairly weeby ship, also does make her better as a trainer due to having an extra commander exp bonus instead of the free exp bonus that the more normal permacamos for her have. For maximum weebness, do like me and have Isoroku (the cat) as one of your IJN DD skippers (I have him on Akizuki currently), and then put him on Harekaze with the Isoroku camo.

    HSF Harekaze vs Asashio

I disagree. Sure, if you get caught with your pants down close up, you can usually kiss your behind goodbye. You don't want to get into knife fights, though. You want to keep the range open and make use of the better ballistics of the IJN guns. If you play it carefully and manage to bait the enemy into chasing you, you can often trade favourably simply by virtue of actually hitting where floaty US shells have a harder time connecting to a fleeing target.

    HSF Harekaze vs Asashio

One more point: While Asashio can work with a standard IJN torp boat skipper, ideally you want a separate captain for her with torpedo acceleration. So she's not a very good trainer. Meanwhile, Harekaze can easily work as a trainer for captains intended for both IJN DD tech tree lines.

    HSF Harekaze vs Asashio

Honestly, the 127mm 50/type 3 guns are seriously underrated. While the turrets they're mounted in tend to be rather sluggish (requiring some forethought), the guns are just fine. Good ballistics and excellent HE alpha mean that if you know how to work them you can easily make "better" gunboat DDs regret coming after you. At least from Fubuki and upwards the gun power of IJN "torpedo" DDs is not to be sniffed at.

    HSF Harekaze vs Asashio

They're fairly different. Concealment and maneuverability-wise they're similar enough that the differences won't be noticed. They're both basically Kagero hulls. Depending on which hull you choose, Harekaze is either a slightly worse Kagero, the love child of Kagero and Akizuki or some kind of Japanese-American weirdo hybrid. The 100mm gun option is arguably the best choice after they were buffed to 1/4 calibre HE pen, though. High rate of fire, good ballistics, dual purpose for additional AA power (not that you won't get spanked by any determined CV, but that's just how life is after CV reeeeeework). She's a lot like an Akizuki that trades a gun turret for an additional torpedo tube. Asashio is a potatofarming trolibote that's in most respects identical to Kagero. Same guns (slightly longer maximum range than Kagero, though), same speed and maneuverability. She farms straightlining BBs like nobody else and that's her niche.

    Poll: Puerto Rico Grind

Where's the "will wait and see until the exact numbers are known" option? I can do most of the directives fairly easily except the last one since, while I do have a fair few T10s, I don't have the highly specific T10s the directive requires (except the Minotaur), and I'm not sure I can be arsed to speed-grind through the Ibuki and the Jutland in that amount of time. Meanwhile, I am actually not opposed to throwing a few doubloons at the game to finish off the construction. A couple of thousand dubs for a T10 CA isn't necessarily a bad deal. But, that really depends on how it's going to work. I don't like the idea of "progress boosters" that you pay for as early as possible and then it might turn out that they're worthless because you don't manage to finish even with the booster. But paying doubloons at the end as a guaranteed way of getting the ship after you know how far you've managed to progress... that's another matter entirely. So yeah, for now I'm skeptical. Will probably play enough to get the Gorizia anyway, but I have reservations about grinding for the Puerto Rico.
  14. https://worldofwarships.eu/en/news/sales-and-events/ring-commanders/ Gives you an ingame mission for each of the two The Ring contest commanders. Both are the same: Earn 10k base exp over any number of battles. They're only three point captains, but I guess it's at least worth spending some elite captain exp to get Jingles up to snuff as a British CA skipper when they're released.

    About Puerto Rico

Well.... I mean, I was actually prepared to toss some doubloons in the direction of the Puerto Rico after seeing how far I managed to get through playing. But if you can't do so in a predictable manner.... eeeeh. If I'm going to spend real cash, it has to be in a way that guarantees a result. Play as much as possible and then spend doubloons to make up the difference at the end? Fine. Spend doubloons at the start and then risk not getting anything for them in the end because I have less time to play than I thought? Nah.

Some serious buff from Adrenaline Rush plus Yamamoto's "Second Wind" talent would do it I guess.

Citadel hits with AP dive bombers

Tbh, I just drop when I think I have a fair chance of scoring a hit. I don't think I've ever scored a full penetration on a DD with AP bombs. AP bombs are an opportunity weapon against DDs. If you can secure a kill, go for it. Otherwise, it's rarely worth it. Better to just keep it spotted, at least if you have teammates with enough situational awareness to shoot them (optimistic, I know).

Citadel hits with AP dive bombers

AP bombs work against DDs in a pinch, I've killed DDs with Enterprise DBs when the opportunity arose. But they're not super effective, usually you'll just get overpen damage.
  20. This thread is making me realize that, on a small screen, thanks to both having user names in upper camel casing and avatars with very similar colours, I really have to double check who's who of @ColonelPete and @ForlornSailor.
  21. To be fair, paying to speed up grinds has pretty much always been part of free-to-play game economies. And it's sort of alright in an actual f2p game. It's when you pay 60€ upfront only to still be served a sandwich of paid for loot boxes and time savers based on f2p mechanics that it starts getting really ed up.
  22. I thought the Stalingrad and Salem were classed as Premiums because to put them in the Reward Ship category would effectively nerf them? Or did they never have the premium ship economy bonuses?
  23. "Reward ship" vs. "Premium ship" is a new distinction as of patch 0.8.9, so e.g. Georgia and Musashi are classed as Premium ships. I think the only ships that are currently classed as "reward ships" are Smolensk, Ohio and Colbert. Ships like the pure coal ships (e.g. Smolensk, Thunderer) and the Research Bureau ships cannot be bought per se, although you can speed up the grind for them significantly by throwing money at the game to get more resource containers (in case of coal ships) or free exp (in case of line regrinds).
  24. As for how the Puerto Rico will affect the state of T10 play, my prediction is: Absolutely zilch. Nothing. Nada. The proportion of players who know what they do to players who don't will be the same for the Puerto Rico as it is for any other T10 ship you can fail yourself to. Because for every complete n00b with too much money that doubloons their way to her, there will be a lot of experienced players with too much free time who get her by playing.
