Do you approve removal of historic ships and introduction of fictional ships instead?
FixCVs_Nautical_Metaphor replied to Jean_Bart's topic in General Discussion
No, but because you transparently try to use a seemingly irrefutable general premise to support a specific point. This point - the aircraft carriers - may happen to be your personal pet passion but is very definitely detrimental to the community and the game as a whole, as evidenced by all the evidence. Insincere bad faith politicking 101. <yawn> -
Recomended videos/tutorials?
FixCVs_Nautical_Metaphor replied to Bird_Dog's question in Newcomer Questions
Aiming yout guns (and torpedoes for that matter) is mostly something you need to practice. There are few really worthwhile tutorials on that, it comes over time, you need to keep at it. Try to watch the shell impacts and reflect on them when you have a chance. But try not to tunnelvision on these things, because the danger is you get caught up and lose sight of things of more immediate concern and the general battle situation. EDIT: and of course you can buy a Yubari real quick because that ship's shells actually really hit what you were aiming at... so that helps with the learning how to aim. You can make it easier on yourself by going for easier shots instead of insisting to shoot hard-to hit targets. The best tutorials on YT are imho by a guy named Flamu. Search his channel for the words "low tier" first and watch what comes up. I think he had a few words on what some "easy shots" are in the New York guide. He doesn't do very low tiers though as he mostly finds anything below tier V boring, but there are a few exceptions which are very much worthwhile, like the Tenryu video, as well as results of his "Tech Tree Thursday" Twitch stream like the longish video on the German destroyer line. Be aware though that many ships have been nerfed over time, others have been buffed and several important game mechanics have been changed. So when "stealth shooting" is mentioned in older videos - that's been abolished, and also the "smoke firing penalty" has been introduced, meaning that your concealment still goes up even when firing from behind a smoke cloud, only not by as much as it does out in the open. This in turn means it makes not as much sense to smoke up BBs any more. You can check these values for your own ship by pressing H in battle. (Check the team line-ups by holding the Tab key.) Other than that, my suggestion is to not fixate on any single line quite yet but try different things in the low tiers first, where new ships really unlock very quickly. Try some battleships (doesn't really matter which), as well as the US, IJN and German destroyer lines. That way, you get a better idea for what your opponents are up to. This is not the least because this game is about to be flipped on its head by the aircraft carrier rework, which will lead to inevitable chaos at least through the month of February, and what new ship ideas have transpired also sound fairly broken and crazy (Russian BBs), so just better don't get too invested in anything at this stage. EDIT: And whatever you do, for Christ's sake DON'T spend any money on it yet, because chances are it's becoming really unfun. (And when you start wondering why you keep getting killed so quickly, install a program called "Matchmaking Monitor" and marvel in wonder at some guys on the other team with hundreds of battles in low tier ships and winrates of 60 or even 80%.) -

This is a pure troll poll. And I can not believe I was reprimanded for pointing that out. -

Free captain respec one week isn't enough
FixCVs_Nautical_Metaphor replied to loppantorkel's topic in General Discussion
The thing is, there will of course be an insane amount of CVs initially because many people will want to try them. But it is impossible to predict the development in the weeks and months after that. -

Seeing as they probably will keep re-balancing the carriers for half a year or more until they finally scrap them, repeated free respeccs are what is necessary. -

[edited], you can snowflake in Co-Op. You can do that if you played at least one clan battle this season, about a week or two after CBs end. -

Wednesday night / Thursday morning, when/if the new patch rolls out. -
I keep getting notifications in port like" Your clan now has access to the clan battle session from 19:00 to 23:00", a day in advance. Maybe I've missed a memo again but they seem completely pointless and I wish they would stop.

Well first off, there seems to be some mistake in their example calculation. In this example, old Zuiho (Tier V) is the odd tier carrier and Hosho is an even tier carrier. So what we need is the x, the price (XP) of the Zuiho in the new system, and the formula would be x new Zuiho - (6700 old Hosho + 13600 old Zuiho) = x new Zuiho - 6700 old Hosho - 13600 old Zuiho In any event, we'd need to know the final prices of the new carriers and the modules needed to free-XP the following ones, wouldn't we. Are they released yet? -
Yes, it is you. You have reached a high enough account level to put you out of protected Matchmaking, and have started to play against real players. Before that, when you were successful, it was mostly bots, on your team as well as the enemy team, even in Random battles, which you probably did not notice. The ones with their names in :colons:. I forget which account level was the one, probably 11 or so. It still doesn't say in the wiki and takes a bit of googling to find out because the search function of this forum is also broken, like so many things. http://wiki.wargaming.net/en/Ship:Account_Level

Poll: Will you keep playing the game after v.8.0 goes live?
FixCVs_Nautical_Metaphor replied to Jean_Bart's topic in General Discussion
That depends on what 0.8.1 is gonna be like. If I like their solution to the carrier mess - yes, otherwise - no. (It seems fairly cut and dried that 0.8.0 inevitably will be a mess, but an inevitable mess, per aspera ad astra etc.) -
OK so I log on to the PTS and it immediately forces me onto the page with the video tutorials. There seems to be no way around that. So I click on this video on aircraft control linked from that page. Because that's of course what is being tested this time, right? Yeah turns out that is still the old video, which is - of course - completely obsolete and pointless here. Folks. I realize that you guys at WG have had a lot on your plate with this carrier rework. But this kind of thing creates the worst conceivable first impression before <haha> things even get off the ground. Especially since one of the recurring points of criticism with the old RTS-type carrier gameplay was the lack of tutorials and other educational material. Producing that material should not have been postponed as an afterthought again. It should have been a major priority of the rework. Not some sort of garnish on your metaphorical plate, but a tasty and important part of the whole dish. The orange in the duck. The plum in the pudding. The carbonara over the spaghetti. Testing those tutorials and reference materials should have been a major priority of the whole public test. Instead, you highlight your determination to continue ignoring these player requests. What do you give us instead? A confusing and badly written little news bulletin trying to explain how to use the new carriers and planes. It does little more than saying what keys to use while flying your squad of planes. That could have frankly been achieved in a less confusing manner in a simple table or mere terse bullet points. Because wherever there are explanations in full sentences, they add to the confusion and some are flat-out wrong. Take this passage here: "Use the [A] and [D] keys to turn. Besides these controls, you can use the mouse for more precise aiming. By doing so, your aircraft will turn more smoothly. This is important when aiming at a target, because in most cases active maneuvering increases the spread of your attack." Maneuvering doesn't make real-life planes go faster, it slows them down (except if you dive but since you can't really control altitude in this game, that seems irrelevant). But let's leave that aside and just try it. Turns out that no, the mouse does not have any impact on the course of the planes. All it seems to do, as with a ship, is control what you're looking at. The right mouse button free-look function described later in the text therefore seems to be completely unneccessary. Next passage, about the new Attack mode: "Once you've selected your target and are ready to attack, hit the left mouse button to separate a flight from the squadron and start the attack run. Depending on the squadron type, you will either see an ellipse for launching rockets and dropping bombs, or the torpedo reticle for a torpedo attack. At this point, the reticule will be colored yellow, and a special timer will indicate when the flight is ready to attack. When in a state of attack readiness, the reticle turns green. To deliver an attack, simply click the left mouse button again." Glossing over the word reticule, which means "handbag", this is a terrible and confusing description. Instead, it should read something like this: "Once you've selected your target and are ready to attack, hit the left mouse button to separate a flight from the squadron and start the attack run. While this fraction of your plane squad forms up and dives at the target, the reticle turns yellow. As soon as the planes are ready to attack, the reticle turns green and you can click again to release their weapons. In this phase, the attack timer counts down the seconds remaining until the planes have dropped so low they have to either release or abort their attack run." Regarding the actual mechanic - that is also less than optimal. The amount of time the planes need to "get ready" with the "yellow" (or brownish, rather) reticle is so short that nobody needs a timer to count it down. The actual attack timer during the green-reticle phase is much too small for these old eyes. And worst of all - why does the green reticle appear in a completely different place than the yellow one was before? Is that supposed to accomplish something? Is that supposed to help me aim in any way? Guys, you yourselves have raised the bar with your "How it works" series which has become rather good. This here is not up to snuff. Now you might say, figuring out how stuff works is part of the fun. Quite right. And fun is what games are all about. So let me tell you what I've figured out, fairly soon after the start: I don't come to World of Warships to fly squads of planes. I come here, and this may come as a surprise, to sail around in Warships and shoot at stuff. Consequently, figuring out how to sail around in the Warships was fun. I was motivated and kept at it, I've been keeping at it, it has held my fascination for more than a year now and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future, even if you don't add any more new ships etc at all. (Except if you now go and ruin it with the carrier rework, or any other stupid nonsense detracting from the actual reason to come here - sailing around in warships and shooting stuff.) On the other hand, the only reason I went along and tried to figure out this plane thing was the same reason my first girlfriend went along when I made her 69 for the first time (mine, not hers): a good-natured but rather unenthusiastic "Oooohkeeeey. <sigh> Not gonna be a spoil sport." And just like 69-ing, it turned out to be not remotely as good as anticipated. So here's what I decided to do: I will ignore the new carriers. I have no interest in that. No incentive you are prepared to hand out can make me interested in that. I suspect I'm not the only one. Now the next thing to take into account, which I'm fairly certain you're all unwilling to face, is this: The CV mains will mostly feel the same way. They will hate this kind of game play. Just like me, they are interested in something completely different as well - in their case, RTS carrier game play. Unlike me though, they are 1) some of the most highly skilled players by far in this game, and 2) incredibly pissed that you took their favourite thing away after treating them like garbage for a few years. The word coming to mind is "revenge" and I very much suspect the revenge of the CV mains will be to try and make the game as horrible for everybody else as they possibly can during the next month. Very obviously, they still can farm incredible amounts of damage and blast all the surface ships to hell whenever they damn well please, at least in the high tiers. 5300 base XP. 'nuff said. Now the bad thing is I had decided to grind the Hindenburg for clan battles next month, followed by a few other cruisers needed specifically for that purpose. The good thing is that the predecessor is of course Tier IX, so I can try to do that in Ranked exclusively, where thank God there are no carriers. The bad news is you had the crazy idea to do Ranked in Arms Race mode, which is probably going to be very terrible in the Roon. So I'm looking at a month of being made everybody's [edited] wherever I go. If you don't drop this carrier nonsense after that month, I'm gone. Maybe sooner if it gets too bad. It may be painful but you need to scrap this rework. It was a blunder and it will not work. The sooner you accept that, the better for all concerned and the sooner we can all move on. To be constructive, here are two suggestions, based on one and the same principle: Stop trying to invent new, square wheels to make gazillions of money. Scale it down a notch. Make decent round wheels and make the money you can make off of those. Meaning to say: Either go back to RTS carrier game play. Modify and balance it in all the ways suggested by the CV mains and try to sell it to the RTS crowd. Players who actually like playing RTS games. OR try to sell this plane flying lark to people who actually like flying planes. Which is to say, combine it with World of Warplanes. From what I hear, it's not the best of games but has at least become playable and enjoyable if you're into that kind of thing, and has a small following. Letting these guys play with us here at WoWs may be just the shot in the arm it needs. And if you're actually incapable of letting go of that square-wheels dream of yours, try to make Sony add a keyboard and mouse driver to their Playstation (it already has USB ports, can't be hard) and make WoWs cross platform across PC, Xbox and PS4. It's quite as impossible as making this CV rework work, but at least that would be worthwhile if it actually came to pass because it would increase your player base instead of turning it away.
-
Of course WG could make the game cross platform. From what I'm seeing in this table, it looks as though that doesn't happen because Sony doesn't want PC games that are cross platform compatible with their Playstation, while for obvious reasons, there are lots of cross platform titles for PC/Xbox. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_video_games_that_support_cross-platform_play

Very little value for money.

Flambass remarked in a recent video how the German BB secondaries have worse firing arcs than USS Massachusetts, so you need to give a lot more broadside for the German secondaries to open up. Another possibility is you simply remembering the wrong secondaries range, which can easily happen, just by running out of secondary signals, forgetting to use them, or forgetting you respecced the upgrades and/or captain. The third one would be user error, clicking the wrong part of the target, but the fourth one is a bug which I had for the longest time, contacted customer support about, multiple times, and Wargaming couldn't fix it until it some day went away of its own accord. Back then, simply nothing happened when I clicked those targets and thus the secondaries just did not get focused on it. But you should recognize that by the respective icon not appearing over the over-the-target marker.

Just make it "woman driver". There's no ladies server they could ban it on.

Which game do you go for?
FixCVs_Nautical_Metaphor replied to affondalaflotta's topic in General Discussion
Co-op is the quickest and easiest way to farm many rewards or bonuses, from the first few missions of the daily chain, to Snowflakes if you just have too many damn ships in port, to Mission 4 of the Legendary Upgrade grind. Or Missions that require x-hundred ribbons / secondary hits, although some Operations can be better for that, but these days you can't rely on having enough competent team mates in the random Operations queue. Also there are times when I just want to derp around and blow stuff up but can't even muster the energy to go sealclubbing, let alone put up with the increasing noob content in Operations. -
"Dienst nach Vorschrift" is what we call it. Doing what the job description says, to the letter, but only to the letter - and only just, while avoiding to do as much as humanly possible. The anti-achievement needs to be called "70s desk jockey" for the sitting-in-smoke reference.
-
Yeah I've even been reaising the issue with me clan mates and it is not an easy one to translate... also because any potential name for the joke genre that comes up seems much to long and wordy to be truly idomatic. "Lazy desk jock" is the best one so far. Some of them actually used to be called "Beamte" in German even though they weren't government employees at all, like Bankbeamte or generally Schalterbeamte... oh boy this has digressed too far...
-
Just from the few games today so far: Civil Servant of the month - DD sitting still doing absolutely nothing in his smoke screen for the entire duration while the smoke blocks team mates from engaging the enemy (it's more funny in the original German, I guess - Beamter des Monats. Do you have civil servant jokes in English at all?) Step on it! Just to make sure! - Losing to an opponent you damaged but failed to kill, with the guy sinking several of your team mates while he is on less than 200 health tbc Best thread ever.

Suggestion for a fun premium ship!
FixCVs_Nautical_Metaphor replied to Linkaex's topic in General Discussion
This basically describes the Scharnhorst, but also Nelson and Hood. YMMV. The funnest premium is definitely Atlanta though. The only problem with that one (apart from it being highly situational) is it basically needs its own special at-least-14-point captain, better a 19-point one, and the perfect Atlanta captain only sort-of works on other ships (Kidd possibly...) and perfect other-US-ship captains only sort-of work on the Atlanta. The dual nationality Ovechkin might be best because I could imagine an Atlanta captain build working well on some Russian DDs, too... or possibly Krasny Krym... but I digress. - Though that might be a good thing actually, because the whole commander training thing is definitely an issue you should not completely lose sight of, silly birthday self gift or no. Atago is absolutely super but defeated by Tier VIII MM, although the ship is very strong, the gun range just feels not enough against the high tiers. Of the ones I don't have myself, Massachusetts looks like it could be the most fun despite the MM - watching other players be melted by your secondaries gives many people a perverse sense of joy. Of the ones I do have, currently I find myself playing Musashi the most, and it is enjoyable, which I'd never have thought before getting it. Fell out of a Santa box, I would never have bought it in a million years. I spent the coal on Jean Bart instead, which I now don't find myself using nearly as often. However, that also has to do with Musashi just being the best one for me currently to grind both Commander XP and credits at the same time because of captain management issues (specifically, having a good captain for it while being too cheap to spend doubloons on redistribution of other captain's skill points because free redistribution week is coming up soon after the end of clan battles.)
