New player here, asking for how to improve.

He has plenty of videos where he has terrible team mates and even some where he can't compensate and loses. Maybe try some of Flamu's advice on that ;-))) I mean it can't be worse than doing the same thing over and over again with the same results. -

Note he didn't get the strike for deleting the WG staffer but for his misbehaviour in chat. Rubbing it into an already subdued, inferior player's face in this way is about the worst kind of chat abuse. It fits my mental picture of the offender and his mates quite perfectly that they bad-faith misrepresented their sanction in this way. I'd only wish WG would deal that way more readily with every pu^h... player who does that. -
I only got that when trying to buy a Belfast for gold doubloons from the Tech Tree the other day.

The "What-is-that-thing-on-my-destroyer"-thread
FixCVs_Nautical_Metaphor posted a topic in Destroyers
As announced, I'm starting a thread to clear up puzzling features and equipment on the highly detailed in-game models. Everyone is of course invited to join in and post their own queries. And I'm starting topical with RN Tier V DD HMS Acasta. There are a great many greebles and nurnies on that ship but most are recognizable or self-explanatory. But look at the X gun (the superposed one on the rear). Or more precisely, look at the stuff on the deck protrusion extending over the Y gun (and incidentally, does that thing have a name? I imagine it is supposed to work as a kind of blast shield, protecting people and equipment below from the muzzle blast.) So... what are the pointy "eggs" (blue arrow)? And then there's clearly a rack with some shells (red arrow.) Why would you put that there of all places? If you want to fire them, somebody has to go out there on the blast shield thingy and get them, possibly in the middle of a firefight. You can't reach them from the deck, either, so if the gun crew of the Y gun wants them, they'd have to climb up there somehow. Whoever does that will not bring back more than one at a time since they weigh almost 23kg and you need one hand to hold on to the ship in rough sees or violent maneouvres. Also they're out in the open, with no protection from the elements, enemy fire, deck splinters or even the blast of the gun muzzle directly above them. Seems like you couldn't find a worse place if you tried. -

It's a heavy cruiser. You can go hunt DDs - with the flat shell trajectories, it works better than some light cruisers sometimes. But the main opponent is enemy cruisers, many of which you can pen at will with the big guns. You can even deal nasty AP damage to BBs. Watch a few Flamu videos on youtube. Generally (though I am by no means a master), the key to successful cruiser play is to be careful not to rush in and lose a lot of health at the start, find a safe position where you are not being shot at while you can keep doing constant damage, and be a decisive force in the endgame when you can quickly dispatch wounded ships with a few quick volleys. Besides shooting across islands, it is generally safe to play either a bit behind the BBs, or come in sideways, at right angles to the line between the BB and its target, so the target is reluctant to turn its guns to you and away from the BB. Or firing angled while kiting away is also usually good, especially if you have a decent fraction of guns on the rear, not quite as effective with A-B-Y ships like the NO, Indy or Gali. Generally, I'd like to add some points regarding economy/management, which is a yuge part of the game not many new players immediately see. You should: 1) Grind out Nicholas real quick. That will really not take long. You may have noticed that most of the challenges and combat missions are restricted to Tier V and up, as is the Royal Navy Arc that is currently under way. Having the Tier V DD will increase your options to farm those goodies, even if you should not get a RN DD out of it. (Edit: the same of course goes for König, which is a real good T5 BB.) 1b) Maybe consider grinding out Farragut as soon as possible, too. I don't know if you have seen the Operations, or Scenarios as they are called in the Wiki, or if the current OP Dynamo will be in the weekly rotation from now on or if it will remain a once-a-year event. But if you want to do that one, Farragut would be the easiest way and I think it would be worth it. You have another one-and-a-half weeks to do so (deadline Oct 4th) and try and get a good result. Besides being fun, and netting 5K coal for a 5* result, it could get you three Dunkirk containers, which will come in handy later on (although it could be a few weeks' or months time) once you start on British lines and want to get Captain Jack Dunkirk. http://wiki.wargaming.net/en/Ship:Scenarios 2) Get Dallas. It should also not take too long since you already unlocked Omaha. She will give you more opportunities to play the Tier VI operations. If you haven't done them, or many of them - most operations yield really useful goodies, especially for the first 5* result. 3) You should definitely grind out Baltimore . That will give you access to (part of) Ranked Battles, Clan Battles, and Operation Cherry Blossom. More goodies. You have till October 8th if you want to catch the tail end of the current Ranked season, I'm not sure if it's worth it, but you have at least a few key words to look up and sort out your own priorities. https://worldofwarships.com/en/news/common/ranked-10/ For Clan Battles, you of course need to find a clan that lets you play, well before the start of next CB season, which I don't know when it is. However, it is super highly recommended since playing even just one CB always gave two straight weeks of free commander skill point redistribution. Great fun and saves lots of gold. Now this is of course all the more fun, the more skill points you have to play with and the more premium ships you have to put the maxed-out captains on, so try to max out at least one commander, in your case obviously the heavy cruiser guy. -
Level of play - Perception?
FixCVs_Nautical_Metaphor replied to EgyptOverseer's topic in General Discussion
@ColonelPete Note how you were not in a super slow BB in that game which you also did not set up for AA due to the recent flood of CV players on their bye bye tour, which did not cost you all the main gun accuracy. Not even gonna touch the fing with the "usually". -
The has been sound criticism for dressing up the "Go Navy" giveaway promo event as a pseudo-competition with lots of annoying, pointless game stats, menus and messages which you keep having to click on to make them go away. Yet with the Royal Navy arc, part of that very same mistake is now repeated, with the "Hall of Fame" using basically the same extra screen at the end of battles.

I just came out of a Tier V match where literally nobody on my entire team had the slightest idea of how to play this game, how to optimally use their ship type etc. And the enemy was not much better. It was the strangest experience. Too bad I was in my Texas so there was really not a lot I could do, even with the new spotter plane. -

On time but late...Strange Game Start problem.
FixCVs_Nautical_Metaphor replied to Migantium_Mashum's topic in General Discussion
It's probably not very helpful, but the only time this happened to me on a regular basis (and with even longer delays) was back when I played on a completely obsolete and super slow office PC. Currently using an 8 gig i3 machine with a passive cooling graphics board, so fairly current components but not high end ones by any stretch, and it only ever happens as a freakishly rare exception ever since. From that, I concluded that barring random server or connection problems, machine speed is the main factor here. -
Huanghe worth the cost of the special offer?
FixCVs_Nautical_Metaphor replied to Talladega_Night's topic in General Discussion
Now they do throw in a 10-pt captain but still - look at it this way: Last week, during the Gold Ship Tech Tree discount, not much more money than that could have gotten you a Leningrad, or a Blyska, or a Perth. Albeit without a 10pt captain and also without a port slot. But still. These are all superior ships. They can also be used in the revised Operation Dynamo. Even if it was the Anshan, I'd say go for it. (That thing is actually really good, Gnevny firepower with real honest-to-god kill-everything-in-their-path torpedoes with 8 km range.) But not the Huang Meh. -
What is your "strategy" regarding RN Guineas and Sovereigns?
FixCVs_Nautical_Metaphor replied to Leo_Apollo11's topic in General Discussion
Already got the Warspite, as well as the Dunkirk commander which it turns out you can't buy another clone of, unlike Dasha Perova or the Space Commanders. So I'm working under the assumption I will be able to get all the 240 Sovies and 48 Guineas from the complete RN Arc, and of course try to get a Gallant and a Cossack out of it while maximising my chances to get RN DDs. To that end, in a moment of weakness, I splurged real money on six premium RN containers, so the theoretical maximum would be 330 sovies. Leaving me to use 130 sovies to buy more containers from the Arsenal. Now they cost 12 sovies but have themselves five sovies in them, so they effectively only cost 7, so I can get 18 of those. (Without resorting to the premium shop, players who complete the whole RN Arc should be able to get five Arsenal containers and still have enough sovereigns left for the Gallant in the end.) (Provided none of the Arc containers is awarded for a RN DD restricted mission, which I don't know.) Now the thing is though - I lost count over how many containers I already did get from the Arsenal ;-))) so it's technically more of a "shambles" I think you call it, rather than a "strategy" per se. Oh well.- 35 replies

Yes but of course there are also negatives, mainly that it's a let-down every time you open a container and don't get a British DD while everyone else seems to be getting some and they are driving around all over the place, playing their shiny new ships. And on top of that, the ones that were privileged by the luck of the draw anyway, can now also complete missions inaccessible to the ones who are left out. Piling privilege on top of privilege for others. It is a recipe to spread frustration, not the least since there are obviously a lot more containers out there without the DD missions than ones that have them. I really have the feeling they don't quite think these things through. Which is all the more puzzling since the whole basis of their business model that they are exploiting is the human brain's addiction to dopamine and instant gratification. Just like social media. (more: https://medium.com/@Reece_Robertson/why-youre-addicted-to-social-media-dopamine-technology-inequality-c2cca07ed3ee) So basically you should assume they are aware of these basic interrelations. Instead, with this launch model, they are withholding the gratification from a sizeable portion of the player base while dangling it tantalizingly in front of their noses. Never mind there's a fun RN Arc to play. The grass is always greener on the other side of the hill. That is how people are wired. The RN DDs could also be complete turds (they are indeed not the easiest ships to make work, at least the ones I got) and this model would still lead to a lot of completely predictable frustration. And what is completely beyond me is that they then go and restrict some RN Arc missions to not only Tier V but Tier VII and above. So they are piling frustration even on those lucky enough to get an Acasta or Icarus in one of their boxes. It would have been the easiest thing in the world to even lift any and all Tier restrictions from all the British DD missions. Then, people too frustrated by not getting the promo DDs and unwilling to wait or miss out, could have just bought a Campbelltown in the shop or ground coal to get it from the Arsenal. It would still have left some people frustrated but at least there would have been some way out. This way, people just feel trapped. And once you feel wronged this way, it is not easy to get your head out of the blue funk and focus on other things instead. Especially if this game is what you use to compensate for the misery of your daily life anyway. But I digress.

This RN Arc Go-Navy-like pseudo competition only starts after you're through with all the directives.

In this game, you'll be hit by aircraft carriers instead, pending their castra^h^h^hrework in a few months' time. It's still a LOT better than Tanks though. For starters, at least theoretically, every ship can damage every other ship. You may at times still feel helpless but there will never be a matchup where there isn't even the theoretical possibility of scratching your opponent's paint. Also I find the spotting mechanics are a bit more straightforward. You can actually see your opponent a lot more often. once you get a bit used to how things are done, and even if you don't see them, you always know when you are being seen without having to either grind hundreds of games or spend 50 bucks to have sixth sense. After a while, you also learn to develop at least a general idea where any unseen opponents likely are and what they may be doing, and will generally be right more often than not (hopefully). Also, although without a premium account it can be a bit of a nasty grind at times, at least I never feel as though I was being completely milked and could only make meaningful progress or even have fun by relentlessly spending cash. (Which may have something to do that I in fact do spend relentlessly anyway, but that's neither here nor there ;-) Not everything that glitters is gold of course, but regarding wholesome enjoyment, it's really no contest. But do get an invite code from another player though and if need be, set up a new account with it, because the goodies do make life a lot easier, especially if you don 't want to get a premium account right away. Texas is not the best premium ship by far but she can be made to work and at least you have some kind of a cash cow. And as christmas draws nearer, there will probably be really good discounts on offer once again. By then you should have gotten your bearings.

I got my Oktober for coal, too, but Aigle? Seriously? I got that thing in the Marathon and the only reason I kept it is that it could borderline justify maxing out my Friant captain...

I get the impression something may be wrong with the Jervis torps. They are supposed to to 15.7 K max damage, only about 500 less than Japanese Tier VI DD torps. I got two hits on a T-22 and it survived, got three hits on an Akatsuki and it survived. The latter - 11.4K torp damage. Would be really surprised to see this happen even with Mutsuki, never with Fubuki torps. -
I like her but would very definitely not waste coal on her, because for coal you can get things that you can't get for money, whereas Yubari can be had for less than 5 Euros any day. The other time during the Gold discount, it was less than four Euros. I like the ship, though it's not one I'd have a hankering to take out every day. But especially now that the Carrier population has so vastly increased again on the low tiers, it can be a blast with its Defensive AA consumable. Especially during free Commander skill point redistribution week, when you can just put your 19-pt IJN captain on her, maximised for AA as you would otherwise maybe not keep around. Without AFT and BFT, the AA is a bit weedy to really shoot down many Tier V planes. And you would normally of course be hesitant to waste those skills permanently on a ship with 1mm too big main guns to benefit from them. I like to call her a good didactic tool because she will teach you not to show broadside two tiers before Pensacola... also teaches team play as you can be the AA escort for other ships, because unlike Katori, she is fast enough to keep up. Also the guns really hit where you're aiming, which cannot be said of many ships in the game besides her and Katori, and I feel as though that helped my aiming skills in general. Four guns do not sound like a lot and she is definitely not a brutal sealclubber. But since these guns are so accurate, you score about the same number of hits as with Kuma, even though she has three fewer guns. This is not the least because when turning the ship, you don't need to wait until all guns are finally pointing back on the target, whereas with Kuma, the backward facing turrets take their sweet time, which again lowers your number of shots and hits. So the low number of guns turns out not to be a real handicap. That goes more for the torpedo arcs. But hey, every torpedo launcher is better than no torpedo launcher.

Yes but don't those have fins though? Because there are these two things on the rear, and also there are two cranes nearby, I thought that was the minesweeping gear. -
I'm trying the default 10-pt basic gunboat build for now. SI would definitely be good but SE is the first 3pt skill. The HMS Jervis hydro for instance has nearly double the action time of most other ships on tier VII at 180 s vs 94 s. I think Yorck is a distant second at 116 s. So even without SI, if using Hydro II, you get nine minutes of hydro per game, plus at least 4 minutes of cooldown, that's 13 minutes. And you probably don't even need to activate it at the start for a minute or more. After 14+ minutes, nearly all my games are either over or I have been taken out. Hydro mod 1 will extend that to a ridiculous 216 seconds per pop and nearly 16 minutes total. I will mount that now just for the lulz. A seventh smoke would be nice but also not a must-have, compared to 2450 extra hitpoints. OT long hydro action time, due to what I think is the 3rd lowest low top speed at Tier VII (though not by much) you may not fell like really hunting down other DDs torping your team mates from afar but you can definitely drive them insane as a "convoy escort". Just keep station a little ahead of them, merrily pinging away as the minutes tick by. The question I have is, what happens to the Captain when these DDs lose their premium status after the RN Arc is over? Because I notice the Dart Mormans of course retained their Black Swan specialization. Will they be naturalized on the DDs or will there be a retraining phase?
