Whilst many people were understandably upset with the St. Petersburg staff controlling the cameras initially, I just want to stick my hat on stand and say that (within context) I really enjoyed and appreciated it.
It was very smooth and professional, and it's encouraging to see WG taking an active interest to improving the viewing experience competitive tournaments.
The problem was that there was a disconnect between what the commentator was focusing on, and the point of focus of the free cam crew.
We are used to commentators having the ability to show action the moment action starts developing. There's no time for transitions or smooth camera work, because most of these flash engagements only last for a few seconds and they need to be made aware of well in advance as they begin to develop.
There's definitely a place for this very cinematic style of showing off matches, but during a live game commentary unfortunately doesn't seem to be one.
That said, I really hope WG continue to experiment with different ways to support future tournaments.
