    The poll shows why WG is going to keep subs: 12 players per team * 8.45% people who want subs = 1 player every game, on average, says he wants subs, and he's going to play one (maybe...) Subs are going to be like CVs: rare compared to the other classes, but always present because 5-10% of people are going to play them.

    My main gripe with subs is that, while they're often useless, sometimes they counter you hard, meaning you get no xp from "fighting" them (i.e. being stalked by them), and you can't even really run away from them, not in the open at least. With CVs, at least the old ones (not the Nakhimov line), I can still shoot down some planes and get xp from that. Maybe it won't impact their reserves, but there's something in it for me anyway. If it's the late game and the CV is cornered, I might spot her and sink her before she finishes me off. CVs can't just submerge and teleport away. Most CVs are also easy to citadel and they certainly won't shotgun-torp you in the face...
  3. The situation after less than 5 minutes. I'm in the Tashkent, trying to expand the Eastern flank, while our BBs on the West go full retreat from minute one. All the BBs are full hp, three of them were still full hp at the end. Believe me, I did ping and I did use chat, but some people are just £$/(*!!
  4. Yeah I guess that's a minimum then. Still, my point is that both can be used at the same time: worst-case scenario, you get some leftover dubs.

    I think it's easy to get sloppy and forget that some cruisers have fairly small citadels: for instance, the Aoba's is underwater underneath the gun turrets, so you really have to go for under the superstructure.
  6. You can buy dubs in the shop with this cashback (20% more dubs than you pay for), then a ship with the discount from the other coupon. Say I want the California (9800 dubs in the Armory): I need 7350 dubs if I use the 25% coupon I have 3250 dubs atm therefore, I have to acquire 4100 dubs thanks to the cashback, I only need to purchase about 3450 instead of 7350 basically, I'm only going to spend 50% of the amount I'd normally need

    USS Gearing 2022: how is it supposed to play?

    If you want a DD hunter, Daring is probably better: defensive hydro, faster smokes for dueling, a heal... Gunboat Gearing has 3 problems: no vision consumable horrible ballistics bad fire chance I run my Gearing as a pure torpedo boat, with the 16.5 km torps, RPF, AR, double torpedo reload and flooding chance for the final point. Of course she struggles against DDs, but she can cripple their support and exert good map control. Overall, I'm satisfied. I've been meaning to try a gunboat build, but until I get a free respec/demount, I don't think I will.

    But torps are coming every 40s or whatever, often with a double ping: I need to use dcp. Even if I wanted to, I couldn't dmgcon every dangerous ping: again, torps are every 40s or less, dmgcon cooldown is 80s.

    WoWs got it right years ago: you get a consumable, with a certain duration, a certain cooldown and a certain number of charges. They can all be improved upon with cpt skills, modules, flags, talents, but they have that discrete nature that makes them more manageable to deal with. So for instance, DDs can smoke up and be invisible (unless hydroed/radared) even though they're shooting or too close, but not forever, and only in a small area of the map, so you can still push them. Some have exhaust smoke, but it's very short duration and long cooldown. Some have creeping smoke, but it's slow. Etc. Meanwhile, subs stay at periscope depth, with 2.2 km surface detection, and 0.0 km air detection, for minutes at a time. They pop up and down at will, no cooldown to worry about, no set number of charges. They can waste it any way they want. I mean, imagine if BBs could use two heals in a row if they so chose. Or if an Asashio could use all 3 charges of TRB in 20 seconds Subs, as I understand, have essentially no cooldown on the three "consumables" that matter the most: pings, torps and submerging/emerging.

    Just had another game where I did a good job brawling on the flank (3 kills, 160k dmg, decent potential) but then the sub made me his [edited]. I was already kiting away, and I dodged 2 sets, but ping ping ping and eventually he had me. 50% player, not exactly an ace. All he had to do was spamming pings and torps. There were 2 subs per team and only 1 DD. Our carrier was busy on the other flank, as well. So I had no help, as is often the case in late games. It completely baffles me that carriers don't get ASW planes, and that they can't spot a sub at periscope depth. I thought about turning and rushing him with hydro (I was in the Preussen), but with that reload on the torps there simply was no time: they keep coming and the window of opportunity is minimal. It's a shame, really: it was a close match and if I had been allowed to push back in, or to kite all the way to the spawn and help on the other flank, we would've had a chance at a memorable win. EDIT - Just had another match right now: 6 depth charges, 8k damage (plus 2k from floodings). Imho that's way too little. This is game where one good BB salvo can slap a DD for half his hp or more, and cruisers are Dev Struck routinely; yet I need to aim the ASW strike correctly 5-6 times to only get 40% of the sub's hp in damage? Way too forgiving, I think. I get it that subs can run out of air and dmgcons, but that's a terrible way of balancing them.

    Neither do fighter planes and yet spotting is an issue, just like dmgcon being overtaxed.

    Indeed. Getting pinged doesn't give xp as far as I know, and pinging is almost free from the sub's point of view: - they have infinite charges - they reload quickly - they only give away a sense of their current position, which can be changed soon enough (subs can ping 360°, right?) and doesn't even appear on the minimap, so dropping ASW planes on them based on the ping alone is veeeeery difficult Given how little counterplay there is against a sub that knows what he's doing, the best strategy seems to be to try to avoid them and sink the rest of their team instead. By then, they might've run out of air and be easy kills (sort of).

    I can "outrun" a sub by running back towards my spawn, giving up map control for free. Not a great move, strategically. And those homing torps can't easily be outrun. What's more, I can't really rush a sub, as he can: - single-fire his torps into my bow, like a British DD (except British DDs have to turn broadside to do that, so they can't run/reverse away at the same time) - submerge and effectively teleport away Finally, I can mess up a DD if I catch him around 5-6 km away in the open. A sub? He goes to periscope depth and now we're talking 2.2 km, which is ridiculous. And the carrier can't help me there: at periscope depth they are undetectable by planes. Moral of the story: with some good use of islands and such, you can force yourself upon a DD, but subs just disappear, like they have Star Trek cloaking devices or something... Submerging should be a consumable with a few charges but much shorter duration each, like smokescreens for DDs.

    It's the lack of counterplay that annoys me. For instance, I just had an Ohio game where an Immelmann griefed me pretty hard...but I shot down 32 planes (68k dmg) and we won. That's fine by me. But the new Soviet carriers? They can drop me from so far out my AA does nothing to them, and they never go for a second pass. And how am I supposed to defend myself from subs, with only 6 km on my ASW planes? Even if I drop them correctly, the depth charges seem to do very little...

  19. Wasn't there a thread about this a couple of days ago, and then it mysteriously disappeared? Anyway, I only recall 2 afk players from this Sprint over maybe 50 games, and at least one of them had technical issues with mods and the new patch. He loaded 2-3 minutes late, but he was there. At least, this is my experience in Gold: maybe it's worse in Bronze/Silver...

    1) It's Greece, so I rushed to B and farmed GK and Kremlin a bit. 2) Ambushed the sub: clean kill. 3) Into the A-B breach: 7 citadels and 41k to the smoked-up Smolensk, basically a Dev Strike. 4) Into B again, then kiting away from the GK: another 30k, she goes down. 5) Again into A-B: 22k to the smoked-up Z-52, he goes down (and so do I, as I had 3 enemies to my left). Despite over 150 defense points, Red Team ahead by 700 or so: we win the East, but it's waaaay too late

    Dutch Cruisers - Airstrike - Respectful request for help.

    I only have three advices: 1) keep the airstrikes for semi-stationary enemies, rather than wasting them on maneuvering targets and risking not having them when they'd be most useful 2) against semi-stationary targets, like an island-hugging Jean Bart, set the boxes in a row, parallel to their bow-stern line; if you really want to use them against maneuvering ships, set a "barrage" with the boxes perpendicular to their motion, so that at least some bombs should fall on the target's trajectory 3) learn which deck platings the bombs can pen: sometimes superstructure hits and fires are nice enough, but you can get more bang for your buck on a Lion than on an Izumo, for instance

    Fist sub I saw tonight. The guy capped B uncontested and went into our spawn like a pawn trying to queen. He pinged me, but apparently not to torp me, just to warn me of what he was doing. Honestly, I don't get the appeal
