Randomly, an average of 1 in 5 planes per squadron would have to fly back due to unspecified "engine trouble" If three planes from the same squadron abort mission, you get a "Conscientious Objector" achievement (can be obtained multiple times per battle), which of course gives no flags.

I propose all T10 CVs get a 25 mm flight deck!

That doesn't sound right. The 155s on the Mogami do indeed pen 38 mm with IFHE (enough to access the decks of USN BBs), but only 31 mm without it, so there's nothing special to them in that regard: without the skill, she's functionally the same as the Cleveland, for instance. -
It would be nice to have a captain skill that increases the AA ranges, so that one could take the 40% rudder module (pretty much mandatory on Colbert & co.) but still have air detection = AA range.

Superships feel like a cheesy halloween game mode
tocqueville8 replied to Karkong_the_Impaler's topic in General Discussion
But that doesn't explain why it seems to do so much better than the DM, unless it's all down to "xp inflation", so that a T11 gets more xp against T9s than a T10 against T8s. Again, I often see DM captains topping the scoreboard, but maybe with 2.8 - 3.1k, not 3.5 - 4.0k. Maybe it'd down to the fact that there are often only one or two superships, so it's even better MM-wise than to be in a T10 against T8-9. I guess it means we need more superships to dilute them... -

I honestly don't know, but it's just my recent experience. I've seen Des Moines get around 3k base xp every now and then, it's just a great ship for great players. But I just don't recall seeing as many 3.5k games as I have recently, almost always from an Annapolis. A few weeks ago someone did 4.1k, I think, in front of my Conqueror. Again, if I can get 3.5k, and I have a handful of times, a better player can surely do 4k or more, but for some reason it's never in a Hannover or a Zorky, only Annapolis, Annapolis, Annapolis. Maybe it's the burst fire, I dunno... -
Is Slava worth 63.000 research points?
tocqueville8 replied to Puffin_'s topic in General Discussion
Well I just got the Slava, which I had even considered getting before Ohio and Vampire. I'm not going to avoid playing her "until the meta cools over", i.e. we see fewer subs and superships (will we ever?), just because my WR could go from 57% to 60%, or whatever. Also, it's not "always the maximum number of BBs". I've seen quite a few games recently with only 3 BBs per team and 2 cruisers, or vice-versa. At 3 PM, not 3 AM. -

tocqueville8 replied to Puffin_'s topic in General Discussion
It's about being forced to stay busy, yet unproductive, running away and managing my dmgcon, instead of trading, hopefully out-trading, fellow large ships. If I'm the Slava and there's a Yamato somewhere, she has the overmatch advantage on me, but I have the accuracy+penetration advantage on her. Depending on the situation, the trade could go in either's favor, but as an above-average player I'm okay with that: we're keeping each other busy, but also productive, and more often than not I'll come out on top. But with subs and DDs, I often have no one to shoot at, and the best I can do is defend myself competently. I can't out-trade them, just hope that my subs and DDs are better than theirs, and would at least screen me. Now, if someone else is spotting the DD, the Slava is actually pretty good at blapping him thanks to the vertical dispersion (I've often landed 5, even 7 shells at over 15 km), but cruisers and BBs mostly spot themselves with the gun bloom. If I were playing DDs, there would be no problem: e.g. in the Marceau I have the tools to apply my above-averageness to any ship class, but in the Slava (and most BBs at high tiers, indeed) there's no real way to outplay, even statistically over many games, a super-CV or a sub: you just hope they suck at their job and try to sink the other 9 enemies, while at best defending competently. Personally, I think a total of 4 DDs/subs and 1 CV, i.e. 5 mostly unspotted enemies, is where the cap should be. But we're routinely seeing games with 7 of them, at Tier 10. That's just awful, imho. -
The guns *are* awesome, but she lacks stopping power, both in the sense of torps and in the sense of long-duration smokes that can deter 3-4 enemies from pushing. She also relies a lot on teammates for spotting, as she has a hard time running-and-gunning without a speedboost, without HE and without guns at the back. Basically, she thrives on chaotic games where everyone is spotted and she can always smoke up and farm decent damage, or even set up an ambush against a DD and get away with it because everyone's distracted. But in more defensive games, she's easy to focus down (her AA is nothing special, either) and she can't stay productive without torps to stall enemy pushes, maybe pick up a Dev Strike every now and then. She's of course trash-tier in Co-op and probably benefits a lot from being in a division. I do play mine somewhat often, but never several games in a row

Frankly, after a promising start, I've now been struggling with the Slava I mean, some games I just blunder with my positioning (she's very fragile), but I also blame the matchmaking: with 2 subs, 4 DDs and 1 (super)CV being pretty typical, there are just very few targets to shoot in many games, and if I try to stay middle to crossfire there's always a sub that teleports through the cap and stalks me. The guns are awesome and I have carried some nice matches, but it's just a tough environment for a long-range BB. -

Frankly, I don't think I'll ever play a ship I consider to be so bad for the game. It's not about the credits: I could get the Annapolis today, for that matter. I just don't want to be part of the problem... -

Some superships are a joke, or the xp calculations are busted. Between the xp penalty and the frequent blowout games, I rarely see Tier 10 CVs getting top spot on the teams. With super-CVs, it's very common. I just saw a United States do 1.6k base in a blowout loss. And I must've seen four Annapolis players break 3.5k base xp in games I was in over the past few weeks, more than all other ships combined. -
Matchmaker Discussion Thread & MM Balance
tocqueville8 replied to Excavatus's topic in General Discussion
Let me just pop over to this thread to reiterate that subs should count the same as DDs toward the MM cap. Game after game at high tiers, I've been getting 2 subs, 4 DDs and 1 (super)CV Playing BB is an exercise in frustration, as over half the enemy team can torp me without a chance for counterfire. The map looks empty, pushing is heavily discouraged, and in any case who would I push against, if I can't see anyone? Playing DD is riskier, too, as the chances of being randomly double-teamed (1 vs 2 DDs, 1 vs 1 DD + 1 sub...) have increased, so being able to set up a favorable 1v1 isn't enough anymore. We're also less rewarded by winning a knife fight, as there's probably another DD or sub to go through before we can start torping/farming those juicy BBs and large cruisers. Frankly, games were more satisfying with Dead Eye, as there were usually plenty of BBs to go around. -

You'll do fine at high tiers using those ships. Just remember to "cross the T" to bring all your guns to bear on your target before blowing them up!- 125 replies

Saw @Estaca_de_Bares twice in a radar Mino while playing Slava. The less said about the other game, the better... -
I dislike the fact they only gave her 2 smoke charges stock. It's not like she would've been OP otherwise. It's just...petty.
-
Same here, but mostly from smoke or at close range around caps, category #3 and #4. The open-water, attention-seeking playstyle #1 belongs more to Grozovoi and Mogador than to the Daring, at least in my experience.
-
I think the point of good ballistics is that you can outtrade enemies beyond a certain range: there's a crossover point, somewhere, where a Grozovoi will get more shells on a Gearing than the other way around. I just don't see Darings being played "run-and-gun" like the Kléber or the Delny. Sure, even a Shima can do decent damage with guns against a distracted BB, but it's not her "thing".
-
As with other mid-tier CLs, her main problem is the HE penetration: at 25 mm, she'll just shatter against the standard BB plating of Tier 6-7 BBs, which is 26 mm. But if you take IFHE, she'll really struggle damaging Tier 8-9 BBs, as their plating is 32 mm at a minimum.
