Any news about the auction this weekend?
tocqueville8 replied to luokailk's topic in General Discussion
I'm sorry, the Wooster permacamo starts at...7000 doubloons?!? Who would bid on that? I mean, the "Go Navy!" (Star-Spangled Banner) is just as tacky, and it's a flat 5000... -
Torpedo aiming is bugged since the last patch. Apparently the torps are launched with an offset if the ship is turning, which is to say, most of the times.
-
As far as oversimplified slogans go, I'll take that over..."conformity is our strength", I suppose. Then again, there's diversity and then there's diversity. I remember a good point being made about Obama's cabinet being obviously more racially diverse than FDR's, but ideologically/philosophically much more homogeneous, and why that was a bad thing...
-
I don't see how increasing the gun reload by 5% would make anyone switch to a different line. It's not a major change to the consumables, the armor layout or the range, the kind of stuff that makes or breaks a line of mostly smoke-campers. To me these sorts of nerfs look like someone at WG is being very "anal" over a ship slightly over- or underperforming. Like the Nagato reload buff from 30 to 29 seconds. I doubt it would have any impact whatsoever, tbh.

Come on, diversity has always been politicized. By slavers, colonialists, ultranationalists and segregationists, for a start.

Torpedoes really are broken
tocqueville8 replied to Miscommunication_dept's topic in General Discussion
I don't get it. On the minimap, you're aiming directly at the ship. The band however is to the right of that. This "inertial bug" of the torpedoes would make them go even more to the right, since you're turning to starboard. I would've expected the two errors to compensate each other somewhat, but it looks like they stack instead... -
I'm still not sure why Dead Eye was removed: 1) it made some BBs a lot more bearable 2) if you knew how to WASD, you could dodge just as well, if not better 3) people still camp at the back like crazy: unless some data miner shows me otherwise, I'm going to believe that any perception that BB behavior has changed is just confirmation bias

1. You can move your commander to whatever you want, but unless the destination ship is a premium (T10 premiums are called "special ships" for technical reasons), you're going to have to spend some doubloons or free cpt xp to retrain. Every captain now has the ability to be trained for all 4 ship types at once (cruiser, battleships, carrier and destroyer). To give you an idea, my Yamamoto (special captain) is trained for the Kitakaze (DD) as far as tech tree ships go, but he can also be moved on any premium BB (like my Shikishima), any premium cruiser (Azuma, Yahagi, etc.) and any premium CV (Kaga) without retraining. But if I wanted to use him on the Myoko, a tech tree CA, then yes, I'd have spend free cpt xp. 2. There are plenty of guides for standard builds 3. Only buy ships and possibly special upgrades for coal. Use your 6-months coupon for your most expensive purchases (steel ships or 200k+coal ships). 4. Absolutely 5. Play more: your xp and credit gains are higher. Consider putting on all your special flags (hydra, scylla, etc.) and best camos if you have premium time: they're wasted with a standard account. 6. There are permament camos for doubloons (which you buy for real money, though some can be obtained playing Ranked or from Supercontainers) on tech tree ships, starting at T6. They get progressively more expensive, and imho they're only worth it at T6 or T10. Premium/special ships come with their permacamo, though you can always overrun it and play with a different one (I wouldn't, but that's me). No such thing as "permament signals", and flags are purely cosmetic. Most players will refer to "signals" as "flags", for this reason. Combat and economic signals can be bought for credits in the Armory, and some come from daily or weekly missions. They used to be given for achievements, but no more since a few weeks. Theoretically, you can also renew signals by spending doubloons, but I wouldn't, and most people wouldn't.

I really feel the game should push this idea more, because it's so counterintuitive. IRL BBs would mostly follow each other in a beeline, but in WoWs they have to think like moving pillboxes, trying to create crossfires while only staying close enough to somewhat support each other. Also, sticking together can work for DD divs, as they have a much better chance to overwhelm a lone enemy DD, but it's a terrible idea for BB divs.

Destroyer comparison Gearing vs Halland
tocqueville8 replied to Alchemist79's topic in Newcomers' Section
POSITIONING: Halland is actually one of the slowest T10 DDs (35 knots stock) KNIFE-FIGHTS: Only 2 guns in either direction, so you can't push nor kite well. The ballistics could be worse, but they could also be better. Generally, at T10 there's no shortage of DDs with high DPM. CONCEALMENT: Sure, 6 km is fine, but every other DD either is a lot faster or has a smoke. At least the Smaland gets an improved speed boost. The Halland can't disengage well, so she'll lose knife-fights she should win, simply because the enemy DD can smoke up and farm her while she's kept spotted by other ships or (briefly) by planes. I find that the combination of poor speed, high silhouette and lack of smoke makes the Halland a rather poor choice for 1v1 fights. I'll try building her for guns, but I still think she's a hybrid, at best. TORPS: Great speed and range, but they're spotted more easily than other nations'. Also, the firing angles are horrible, so the ship can't torpedo-rush well and she has to show broadside when trying to contest a cap using torps, which exposes her to retaliation. Still a strong point overall, though. AA: Halland AA is God-tier, but Smaland, Marceau, Grozovoi and possibly Def AA Gearing can also give some headache to the CV, if he's not a strong player. Because she's so fast, the Marceau is probably the best one to physically go after the CV, if there's an opening. -
Been there, done that. Honestly, there is a particularly virulent hatred against CV players, even part-time ones. Blap a cruiser for 25k in a BB and you'll hardly hear a peep, but drop a few torps on a BB that doesn't even bother with turning, and he'll send you a private message in port wishing you all sort of suffering. I once confronted one of these keyboard-warriors after a match, and he candidly admitted he was just following along with the CV-bashing from Twitch and YT. I explained to him they're not easier to play than everything else, we talked about the stats for a bit and he apologized. It's groupthink, basically. As for the general problem, the only thing that irritates me is when teammates are too stubborn (or unable to read English, understand quick commands AND minimap pinging) to follow directions, things like "reset that ship" or "turn away, don't overextend", etc. If you were told not to make a certain mistake and you make it anyway, I'd say you deserve a downvote. But not abuse, naturally. If you just played poorly on your own, honestly, it's fine.

A nice performance in the Minotaur 2nd game in the Hayate 3rd game in the Hayate. Yes, really The MM needs an intervention: -
The Hindenburg will always be able to do more damage, as she sets a lot of fires and they can be healed 100%, which isn't the case for SAP. However, if we're talking Randoms, so not too many Petros/Stalingrads with their 50 mm deck, the Venezia for me is more comfortable: - more maneuverable (5 knots faster!!!) - can smoke up to disengage - huge alpha strike, especially against DDs - better ballistics, or at least it feels that way - fewer torps, but easier to use thanks to the range - synergizes per-fect-ly with Sansonetti, if you have him: Gun Feeder is great to punish the occasional broadside cruiser, you can get your torps to a decent speed, and the extra range after 1 kill is also welcome As for the grinds, the Hipper just didn't work for me, and the Roon can be annoying with her turret placement, while I had no trouble on any of the Italians. EDIT: The Hindenburg has hydro/Def AA, of course, but both ships have a roaming playstyle that should keep them mostly safe from torpedoes, and the Italian smokescreen can also be used to evade CV attacks, or even better, to turn in front of a BB while under CV attack.

Requesting expertise/opinion regarding FXP

From what I've read, we'll hardly get any new Free XP ships. Instead they'll keep adding stuff to the Research Bureau. -
Requesting expertise/opinion regarding FXP
tocqueville8 replied to Harvin87's topic in General Discussion
Personally I've never been drawn to the Agir: - huge target, and the bow can be overmatched by many BBs - as with most German ships, easy to citadel with AP bombs - unlike most German ships, easy to citadel with AP shells as well, when showing broadside - no radar, no special AP shells (I think) - bad firing angles - you can't take secondary skills on cruisers anymore I mean, it might be strong in 1v1 Brawls on in Ranked, for all I know, but trading, say, radar for torps and nerfed secondaries is just bad. I've rarely been afraid of facing an Agir, unlike many other ships. Honestly, since it's too late for Alaska and Smaland, it might be worth using that Free XP to speed up some annoying grinds, especially the stock modules of T9 ships. People might suggest you to use it for Research Bureau regrinds, but since you only have one T10 tech tree ship, I'd say that's far in the future -
I'd go: Pensacola ---> Des Moines. My reasoning: - at T7, T8 and T10, a higher proportion of your guns are at the front, which is great for pushing, especially in the late game - you have a stronger bow plating, which allows you to tank the AP shells of some battleships you'll encounter - your HE penetration is decent: enough to melt some BBs (French and British) and to reliably damage others if you know where to hit. I wouldn't recommend IFHE even on CLs, but it's certainly even less useful on CAs. - you can citadel enemy cruisers much more easily - the Baltimore can actually stealth-radar
-
The skill is still present in the BB skill tree (for only 2 points now, since few players ever took it), so I'm assuming the enhancement only applies to BBs as well.
-
Honestly, the amount of effort you have to make to do some decent damage in a post-nerf MvR (tried it a few games, left disgusted with the bomb dispersion) or an Audacious (and not just some pointless fire damage), compared to, say, a Venezia or a Shikishima, is pretty astounding.

Torpedoes really are broken
tocqueville8 replied to Miscommunication_dept's topic in General Discussion
You would THINK that something as fundamental as torps going in a straight line was settled for good in 2015... I mean...what is this crap, the Coriolis effect?!? Come on, WG! -
Because it's often not worth it: - T10 CVs (and British T8s, I think...?) have armored decks, so it's hard to damage them with HE bombs and harder than average to damage them with HE rockets - CVs have good AA and automatic fighters, so you usually can't go for a second pass the way you would against a BB with poor AA. That cuts down your DPM against them in half, more or less - CVs are very far, it might take you 50% or even 100% longer for you to reach them, further cutting down your effective DPM against them - CVs are very far, so your team will rarely help you finishing them off, unlike a wounded DD/CA/BB Basically, going for the enemy DDs is almost always a better strategy: you can hound them relentlessly, spot them, make them abandon a flank, etc. CVs are strong in the long game, but many games are decided early on by DD vs DD interactions, Dev Strikes and such, so DDs, radar cruisers and cruisers in general, ships that exert map influence but can be sunk quickly, are usually much better targets. On the other hand, at mid tiers Fusos and such are excellent CV snipers...

[Poll] What is your opinion about new (i.e. 2nd line) German KM Destroyers ( "Z-31", "Gustav-Julius Maerker", "Felix Schultz" and "Elbing")?
tocqueville8 replied to Leo_Apollo11's topic in General Discussion
I like the concept, but at least at T7-8 (I haven't played beyond the Maerker) they seem to be underpowered: - the AA is weak - the concealment is...okay at T7, just bad at T8 - no speed boost, which is just petty - slow-a** torps with fairly long reload - the range is bad for something so farming-oriented: at T8 you don't reach 12 km, so you're outranged by Soviet radar They're good at grinding down broadside BBs and cruisers, but that's it. They could use a reload boost (but it's the ZF-6's gimmick) or an extra smoke charge to begin with, or a heal, or maybe 1-1.5 km better range, so that AFT is less necessary and one can take Fearless Brawler or SE/AR earlier. Also better torpedo reload, because it would go well with the concept of a long-range harassing ship. Imho the Z-31 has an advantage over the GJ Maerker, which is that T5 cruisers are generally much squishier than T6 ones, so she can farm more citadels. Overall, not terrible (the DPM comparisons with T1 ships were just stupid), but they lack the "oomph", the impact, the ability to sink enemies quickly and decisively. -

2 BBs and 6 CAs per team, I end up doing 200k dmg to cruisers Not the hardest game ever, but after we went 3-1 on ships the enemy team clawed back to 3-4 and we got a bit surrounded on the D cap. Fortunately, I was sailing wide and I could snipe the enemy Nevsky and Hindenburg going for our spawn, after doing similar damage to their Puerto Rico, Des Moines, Yoshino (obviously) and another Hindenburg. Their Marceaus pulled a "Clever Girl" on our pushing Des Moines: one open-watered while the other appeared from behind an island and rushed her with torps. I was a bit behind, turned away, dodged the other sets and melted her with my (non-specced) secondaries. As an added bonus, I reached a nice round number! -

Apparently you can keep stacking 2x modifiers and only reap the benefits later, saving credits in the process. Never tried it myself, but I'm curious as to whether an additional bonus would make it 6x or 8x...
