As a new player to 'World of Warships' (started this week) just wanted to say thanks to all that have posted hint/tips and strategies, officially and through other related forums. It's a bit of a learning curve getting to grips with ship selection, navigating, maneuvering, targeting, avoidance, tactics and assimilation of information. Have made all the usual noob mistakes: (mostly on Random Battles) 1. Scuttling over to one side of the map to aid a 'friend' and then getting bounced by an unseen CL/DD combo 2. Concentrating too much in 'binocular view' : pounding an enemy and burying the nose in an island or not realising that the DD I'm fixated on isn't trying to ram me just getting close enough to release its torpedoes (takes a lot to knock out a DD) 3. Accidently hitting a 'couple of friendlies' while in-fight (sorry whoever you were) 4. Difficulty controlling WASD while in-fight - use autopilot at start of play to navigate but has to be aborted when seeking an attack or defence, would be nice to program in a zig-zag when fighting. 5. Trying to slew binocular view 180 deg while being attacked from two sides. 6. Not taking advantage of cover - probably need to apply a bit of WoW Tank tactics 7. Not being aware of the comms calls while in-fight and not knowing which 'F' button to press - too busy. I'm getting there slowly and know what to focus on - having fun in the process. Think a second screen (for binocular view only), joystick control and rudder pedals might be an interesting option! Looking forward one day to perhaps seeing a line of UK CV's? (Had an uncle on HMS Indomitable)

Sage words indeed and one to print off and frame - there is definitely a mantra in there. Many thanks again.

I really have no interest in 'events', if I see something I like I'll buy it - the 'shipyard event' was simply a way of advertising a premium ship. Whether it's scamming or not it's my money and my choice.
-
Verblonde - great advice. It seems that every time I play Random I'm usually slaughtered (often by a group) of players on the other team that I cannot even see - just see the shells coming in at the last minute and that's it. I probably need to move up a few more Tiers and try to max out the capabilities of the captains.

Christmas present to the WOW team. There was no way I could ever get to the end of the build just by playing!
-
I can't do that until I can handle the CV and aircraft properly and have some strategies lined up - I'll happily go into Co-Op to finesse my playing. I think it's important to not let other players down even in Co-Op...there are a lot of us that only play Co-Op and for newbies it's their first taste of the site so (unlike some others - present company excepted) I'd like to be able to demonstrate a little professionalism.
-
Brilliant rnat - will give that a go. Thanks.

By way of an update - after spending some months in WOT decided to return to WOW - in WOT I dedicated myself to mostly playing 'arty' (as rubbish playing with tanks) so had to grow a thicker skin, sadly there are as many numpties in WOT as there are in WOW, although the idiotic comments diminish markedly once the school holidays are over. I now play both games as sometimes if I have a bad day in WOT I can have a better one WOW and vice versa. I have learned a lot in the last few months and I'm a lot happier with my performance in WOW. I still only play 'Co-Op' as there haven't been any Clan opportunities and there isn't any point playing against another team unless you have the right players, in the right ships, with the discipline to enact the right tactics at the right time and I can't see a way to enable that ethos..(same with WOT) Great fun playing with 'Puerto Rico', although it plays almost the same as 'Scharnhorst', but sadly without the torps. It's also more durable - the 'Scharnhorst' is a little flimsy. I have just started to play with CVN Hosho, so a newbie again on a new learning curve in the training room. It does have some similarities with playing 'arty' in WOT!

Hi and Happy New Year, Having played WOW for a while I thought I'd have a go at operating a CVN so selected an IJN Hosho. I tried it for a couple of games but despite the tutorials I couldn't figure out quite how it all worked, so ditched the idea and the ship....however I was pleasantly surprised to see recently that my late uncle's ship (HMS Indomitable) has been featured as a premium purchase - guess where I'm going with this - so I need to get up to speed. I relaunched the Hosho a couple of days ago and took it to the training room. I 'played' 4 games with it in the first half hour against someone who said my playing was bad (where do these people come from?) It was pretty difficult to figure out how to avoid the other guy whilst launching / attacking / recovering and the fact he was spawning only a few squares away didn't help... also there's no point launching a Tier IV flight against a Tier VIII (Cleveland) - not sure if its possible to arrange a training room with just a dummy ship to practice attacks against? Normally I would just play Co-Op and learn as I go but this would clearly be unfair to my 'team mates' (I use the term loosely). From comments I have seen about other players using a CVN it is a bit like playing 'arty' in WOT, there is no appreciation when doing a good job but if you don't get hits you are labelled as 'rubbish'. Interestingly there are some crossover skills between 'Arty' and 'CVN'; enemy location at spawn and their possible tactics, target-type awareness, finding a good hiding place, maintaining range, leading a moving target, watching your back, watching your teams tactics (if there are any) and also (after playing with some slow BB's) guessing where you need to be toward the end game. I was looking on the forum for CVN tips and hints which may be of use and found myself here, the OP was useful but the subsequent comments less so. While there is no alternative to experience does anyone have any nuggets of info they'd like to impart?

Many thanks to Mat and Zigiran for your sensible and illuminating comments. I don't normally suffer from anger management issues but I get very annoyed at being bullied. The number of clans playing Co-OP for the 'Victory' event recently explains the increase in negative static - I had another run in last night with some idiot and to be honest I'm not taking clan derived crap in Co-oP, to avoid this I have decided to quit WoW for now.

Anyone having read my previous posts - well practically a blog - will know that I will [edited] and moan about things I perceive as 'unfair' by others be it bot's or otherwise. Just to make a change - a few observations: 1. On my third ever game in Co-Op last year I was playing a Tier 1 'Black Swan' and was attacking a 'Hashidate' at 7k range. My first salvo straddled it but my second shot blew it up completely. This has never happened since with an enemy vessel that has full points. 2. When playing Co-Op I notice that when encountering an enemy at the start of a game the opposing vessel, when in range, will fire approx three salvos at you then turn their attention elsewhere if another of your team's vessel's is in range. 3. If the enemy vessel has friends they will often select you as a 'priority' target - but again only three rounds each before looking at the next nearest target. In 2. it gives you a chance to skulk off with half your points and a couple of consumables gone to try and re-group, but in 3. you are usually toast if playing anything other than a butch BB (i.e. 'KG V' or 'Kii') although the firing rate on those is a bit is a bit slow. I try and avoid getting into close range fisticufs when piloting a BB but sometimes you can't help it - so after a pasting I get on with selecting the appropriate consumables and 'healing' while steaming into secondary armament range - but it's 50/50 if you get through to the other side, you will often take a couple down on the way if they are cruisers - but if up against 2 or 3 other 'BB's' survival is slim. Took out 7 enemies while piloting 'Fiji' a few days ago - those sorts of things don't happen very often; twice in 4,000 games, but I have set a lot up for other team members, mostly it just happens (aha bitching again) we all have the same chance at finishing off an enemy but it is annoying when you've been twisting and turning and plugging away at something and whilst reloading for what will be the final salvo someone out of the blue provides the 'coup de grace'! Last observation..I have noticed more than ever lots of 'clan' players in Co-Op. I don't mind it too much as I often find myself with the most kills and points at the end of the game, ahead of these people, but their commentary is annoying. Someone was rude to me in German the other day as I was seemingly in the wrong place, his mate also chimed in with something nasty so I torpedoed both of them out of the game. I have no qualms in playing my 'Black Swan' (well mostly 'pink' Swan) for a few games... but they should really play 'clan' games in 'Random' and let the rest of us get on with learning in Co-Op.

FYI Tried Playing 'Nair' 3 times last night - bloody useless. Dallas got smoked within the first 5 mins, Leander within 7 mins. Scharnhorst and I went off piste to tackle the CV (& a DD & a CL!) Got the DD but dead in the water from one salvo by the CL - left me on fire, the second salvo finished off half my life - torps did the rest! The bot targeting was far superior, their reload time was quicker than usual and I am sure they were over-ranging too. Their ammo was far superior and their DD's were bomb proof. I don't expect an easy win every time (especially with no back up) but they were taking the mickey. Of course some clever sod remarked that he got the CV every time with his Scharnhorst. I flounced off after calling him a rude name. Grrrrrrrrrrr..

Norris of Quirm - many thanks. I know I have not been managing my captains at all well and will make some re-deployments! I was lucky enough to get a large number of useful signals that gave me x 300 xp so used these on the 'special missions' and also a few Random games but mostly Co-Op where the wins were easier. Have expanded the port a bit and have several trees I am climbing simultaneously - this weakens the overall but with 150,000 ship points to get to one particular up-grade there is no real rush. I just start each session with Tier 1 and work my way up, unless there is a special on. Currently its 'Shark' but I've got issue with the 4 ships I can use: Dallas / Leander / King George / Fuso non of which really work unless the team know what they are doing - played two games last night and it was clear in the first game that no-one knew what to do and the second game we all had a bunch of leanders - didn't last long!

Many thanks for the supportive comments - great bunch of people on here. Found out why I was having such a bad time over the weekend - had the wrong tab open on the current game option 'Honour v Glory' (or whatever it's called)..turned it off and sank 5 with 'Yorck' Had a windfall of doubloons (1,000) courtesy of a supercontainer (very rare) so need to figure out what to spend it on... I'd like an elite commander for the Taco as I had a bit of fun with her last night - not sure quite how to go about it though..I'm not gaining enough Commander XP in battle. I've only had a smattering of points here and there to use on Commanders overall, I think the best I have is 10/10 on 'Black Swan' - not planning on selling her as handy for de-pinking... Had a quick look at Helpme Discord and will download when at home this pm. Now over a thousand battles in Tier 1. Must play more up the other end although I haven't got any further than Tier 8 yet ('Kii'), which isn't a fast killer..

Norris_of_Quirm, many thanks for your comments. Last Known Position is enabled. Certainly raised a couple of other fascinating points. Regarding the sneakiness of other players, I think in a clan in Random there would be more eyes on the target as players should be looking out for each other and neutralising or at least identifying possible enemy attack strategies - playing as a 'loner' it doesn't really work. Co-Op works for me at the moment - I'm still perfecting the basics. I thought I had nailed the DD attack plans but it all fell apart this weekend, ditto BB attack plan with Scharnhorst..and it was all going so well. The bots were being mean again especially Sunday / Monday. I was hitting hard at close range and getting nowhere whereas a 'lucky' salvo from distance halved my HP in one go.. Tried another 'Random' battle - the team had no clue and I managed to get hung out to dry - three vessels having trouble with a DD and 2 x CL, I steamed over to help - they fled, end of story. I make more XP playing Co-Op with my Black Swan. Same with special operations - (played a couple of games of 'Naira' (?), attacking and liberating our convoy and guiding to safety - the enemy convoy vessels (Furutakas) were being very mean with fast reload times and I seemed to have been singled out again. My own Furutaka doesn't play as well but I do need to work on the captains XP and select the right attributes - I've just seen a great thread on this. A lot of rather stupid and rude people around again this weekend in Co-Op - the speed I am blacklisting means I won't have anyone to play soon...

Thanks Verblonde. I can straighten out the 'not making sense bit': I don't like losing, especially if it's down to poor tactics, bad strategy or carelessness. I'm not 100% focused on the material rewards (if I was I wouldn't chose the 'gamble' option when selecting containers!) to me winning is everything - to suffer a needless defeat through the lack of my own skill I feel is shameful, dishonorable and demeaning. The historical elements within the game mean that when 'my' ship is sinking I cannot help thinking of those in the real ships, replicated here, who suffered and died. Without some kind of command and control in Random you are likely to lose - just steaming up and down out of range waiting for something to happen, maybe someone to probe and get shot to bits while a well organised enemy outflanks you on both quarters and methodically kills the team is stupidly negligent - I certainly cannot derive any satisfaction out of a 'play' like that even for a few extra XP. I'll have another look at the detection theory - I did have look at it last year when I started but it isn't something that has a lot of concern for me in Co-Op, it's happened a couple of times (other than being way out of range or when the enemy is generating smoke), I think because there are a lot of other people around and the games are quite short so it's not an issue, however in Random it seems to be a key element - I think I have been shying away from it, but in the most recent Random game my CL got suckered into an 'easy' fight with a DD which I thought was mine until three other enemy vessels 'de-cloaked' nearby. Needless to say I was instant 'toast'. I had my suspicions (if it's too good - it's probably a trap) but didn't act upon them.

Thanks for your comments MRGTB and Zigiran. I didn't quite understand Zigiran's second sentence though. My point is that there is no point in me, as an individual, playing Random as it is too high a risk. I would only play Random if I had a well disciplined and tactically intelligent 'team' with me. I think a 'clan' like would have an advantage, but I simply see no point sticking my head in the Lion's mouth and pretending to act surprised when it bites. With regard to your third sentence; playing 'Random' as an individual - with another bunch of individuals - is a waste of time. You may get lucky once out of twenty times if the 'enemy' happens to be more clueless than your 'team' (I use the word loseley) but it's rare. I prefer to play to win than to lose, so I'm happy to play Co-Op and grind my way up the ladder slowly knowing that I am fighting another bunch of individuals, but at least I can see them rather than in 'Random' where you can't see the enemy and you are taken out by three invisible ships at close range at the same time! Besides which I am still regularly getting my [edited]handed to me when playing DD in Co-op. Fine up against CL / BB but I haven't developed the tactics to deal with suddenly appearing enemy DD's..getting there though. On the brighter side my 'Scharnhorst' premium purchase is performing really well. It's in a niche of its own and I'm having as much fun with it as I did with my 'Black Swan'. Have been caught out once or twice when trying to take on two BB's at the same time at close range, the rate of fire is good but doesn't do enough damage - one good broadside from a BB at close range shows it's vulnerability - the torps are handy but don't do much to a BB - caught out a few CL's though.

Thanks lossi_2018 - really have issues with 'Random' so don't normally bother: If there are several people in a clan playing I'm happy to join in, but normally there are only one or two people that have a clue and we just get wiped out by a well organised enemy. Clan play in 'Random' is the only way. I've been playing 'mission of the week' a lot over Easter (can never remember the 'operational' names of these - the one where you have to go attack a port and stop 5 waves of enemy reinforcement). If everyone knows what they are doing you can rack up some points - but because of the holidays there are lot of regulars away and it's been a bit hit and miss. On two occasions My 'Leander' was practically wiped out by the shore forts before I got into the 'haven' - it's unusual so they must tweak the bots sometimes. I've also been aware that people go for the easy shore targets and unarmed transport ships before committing to fighting off what's left - this means we lose a couple of players through lack of teamwork and ultimately pay the price of failure. I wondered why non-torpedo carrying and relatively vulnerable ships like 'Pensacola' were able to make 5 kills - they weren't trying to kill off a DD, CL and BB all the same time! Played 'Co-Op' a few times yesterday but you can tell people had better things to do as in one game there were only two 'humans' playing! Three of the bots on our team went 'pink' before the end!

Hi _NekoNyanNyaa_, your comments are much appreciated. I've had a couple of ships that seemingly played woefully badly but I got round their shortcomings. I couldn't work out what I needed to do to get Exeter or Sims to work for me they just seemed deficient and I didn't have time to work out the pro's and con's. I'm happy with the ships I have at the moment, although I find playing 'Wakeful' (which plays similarly to 'Exeter') to be amusing / desperate in parts, a bit like a Shakespearean tragedy. I bought a 'KII' and its ridiculous. At long range it takes hits and disintegrates like wet cardboard, but at medium range it's awesome. Scharnhorst suffers similarly at long range - it can't take punishment because as soon as it's seen it's everyone's target, but at medium range - being played as a lone wolf, coming into an attack when the enemy is focused elsewhere it's a game changer. I can see it as a very useful chess piece in a clan - perhaps being played as a Bishop. My King George V is really an anchor piece, it underpins a set attack unfortunately in Co-Op these nuances are lost unless the tactics accidently swing that way (rare). Something odd happened last night (11/04/2019) in the middle of a battle the screen froze, kicked me out then recovered, I was shooting at a DD at the time and when the screen came back on the firing button wouldn't stop..I switched on again tonight to play and noticed I'm down on doubloons.. maybe the server caught up with some earlier transactions (I've been busy buying and selling / updating) but it seems odd - and I was short of a few points to get a container, but having just logged in I have 3 I didn't know I had -- weird. Nothing on the newsfeed. Technology huh? Still having trouble playing DD. I get too involved in close action. I keep making the mistake of smoking, lying in wait, focusing on a fat target then torping, then as I try to escape find myself too close to unobserved (secretly smoked) CL's or DD's - one or two hits on me and that's about it - need to hold back a bit. Should maybe crack it in another 3,500 games. Will be interested to see where I am in 365 days time....

Thanks for more useful info! Tried playing a few 'spaceship' games last night - I'm not sure anyone really had much idea, certainly no cohesive plans were forthcoming to beat the 'generator' defenders so probably best left to those in clans. The 'respawn' concept threw me a bit. Playing 'Aegis' again - its very formulaic, but if everyone knows how it plays then it can work as a good XP earner if nothing else. Good to know what ships work and which do not, pretty much anything that doesn't have healing is likely not to finish, the 'end game' being particularly bitter. The majority of the enemy ships ('Furutaka') are quite fierce with a high rate of fire and getting caught up with them in a dogfight isn't a good idea. My best ship for this is 'King George', played reasonably conservatively so as to have enough firepower at the end to have a go at the last attacking point scoring BB's and protecting the liberated convoy...

Thanks for your thoughts.. Aside from Co-Op I play the specials from time to time for the additional XP, the first few games of these type are a bit of a fun learning curve but after a few games they become a bit boring. Again I think these are probably better played in clans with everyone knowing their role and can maximise the points. Agreed re not over reaching, but there are two ways of looking at it - one of them is sink or swim. I do need to move up the Tiers a bit and as I have just got to T7 and enjoying the experience. The only way to find out how much more I need to know is to get something higher up the food chain and if I get flattened I'll then know what I need to know - but I'm not planning on playing 'Random'. Certainly Scharnhorst didn't cover herself in glory first (or second or third) time out but once I had worked out that it played somewhere between being a heavy CL and a BB it is starting to come good so looking forward to playing this lots more. I'm still grinding up the Japanese and American ships, but now spending more time on the Captain's XP's So for the year: In Random I have played 316 games and have a win rate of 48.73% (not good) In Co-Op I have played 3,626 games and have a win rate of 97.57% (better) I guess you can see I'm more comfortable in 'Co-Op'!
-
Excellent advice as per usual - many thanks. Yep deleted Exeter and Simms - they were a mistake and I needed the space. I was playing using the minimum amount of cash. I'm still only playing 'Co-Op' until I have amassed a bit more experience and maybe find a clan.. I'm zoning in on the types I'm getting good results with and moving up the tiers. I keep a Tier 1 'Black Swan' around for when it all gets too much i.e. I lose several games in a row in higher tiers (when the bots are cheating or I go pink) as the Tier one games only last for a short time and I'm guaranteed to kill one or two. It's exactly a year to the day since I started playing. I tried to grind may way up only a few things on the way but reached the point where I wanted to get a bit further ahead with some larger ships - Queen Elizabeth was working well but I needed 138,000 ship Xp's to get to the next level (King George) so bought that. The same on the german side, so I bought Scharnhorst too (I always knew I would). Both play differently of course and both are fun, although Scharnhorst is a bit of a target so needs to be used as a sword 'lurk, cut and thrust, retreat, lurk etc'. The torps can surprise the inexperienced but they cannot be used as a primary weapon like a CL. It plays a little like 'Yorck'. 'King George' on the other hand is really a big club which is great but needs no less careful positioning. The longer ranges of the BB's are not always an advantage as the damage caused from 24 kms away isn't usually that great, annoyance mostly. At closer ranges it works very well. I think I might buy Alaska simply to see what the 'ultimate' feels like to play.... Bought a 90 day Premium package (couldn't find an annual one) in order to support those that have given me so much pleasure over the year - will carry on with the premium packages going forward.. I guess I need to stop this 'blog' now as I think I have moved from 'Newbie' to 'Noob'! Thanks to all!

Thanks Verblonde, loads of stuff to think about there and a few things to try, however I dumped 'Exeter' and 'Simms' as it wasn't working for me and have concentrated on getting my DD skills up to scratch, and after 'Exeter' my 'Leander' now seems unsinkable! Got the point about the torps range. Using DD's it's 'run-stop-smoke-lurk-torp-guns-escape' against CL & CA larger targets. Doesn't work too well against DD's, but I haven't committed to memory the spawn locations so I tend to seek an island for cover then circle R or L. I am surprised how often I can parallel track a DD and use guns to disable. Had some fun laying smoke and scurrying away behind a nearby island which as rnat said can confuse the enemy, as they wonder if something is lurking there. Great fun if one of your BB's steams through it at them. I still get irked when It's obvious I'm on a torp run and a friendly gets in the way, I've had to break off an attack several times because of this. Not sure if it isn't deliberate sometimes. Probably the same person who squawked that people kept stealing 'his' kills.. When it all goes horribly wrong it's off back to 'Hashidate' or 'Black Swan' for a bit of quick 'de-pinking'. Still much to learn....
-
Hi rnat, I came to that conclusion pretty quickly. I kept losing with the only DD I had and couldn't be bothered to wait for the game to finish so downloaded a couple I tried last year and got rid of as I didn't think it was for me. Having watched other DD's zip off and park, smoke up and launch torps into the blue I concluded that they had played the particular scenario a million times over and knew where the enemy spawned. Got caught badly when I concentrated on trying to kill another DD I got him in the end but wasted so much time I was bushwacked (with one shot of course) by a CA that sneaked up on me. The second one-shot death happened via a BB from 20 kms away. I wish my BB's could take out a DD with a lucky shot at that range - it's usually 5 salvoes if your're lucky. More studying DD ops tonight!
