    Probably following British WW1 custom ( British crews had a habit of leaving or wedging blast doors open to speed transfer shell and powder charges to the guns. If a shell hit a turret, the flashover could travel along the ammo path to the magazine. This led to the Jutland quote "there's something wrong with our bloody ships today" ) of maximising rate of fire as opposed to aimed shots.
