  1. Hi there, Every so often I play a match and before it even starts I can look at the team compositions and identify problems areas. 1. first thing I look for is DD imbalance, I feel this imbalance has the strongest effect on the game 2. "fail divisions" A division creating a gap greater than 2 tiers 3. Radar, how many ships, range and activation length 4. Number of smoke CCs. 5. Tier distribution across classes I find taking these aspects into account helps a lot simply by giving you more accurate expectations for the match. What things do you look for before a match starts? Do you think my list is wrong? I would love to get a community view on what constitutes balance at first glance. Attached is the match that started this thread, I felt bad for not being able to do my job as DD and didn't play particularly well. Criticism of poor play and salty crying may well be accurate but ultimately unhelpful I feel. Thanks for your imput
  2. Dead link? I think I wasn't clear, I was talking about looking at specific examples of matches not on aggregate. Furthermore when I meant DD imbalance I meant 2v1s and tier imbalance for example my linked image. Also role imbalance, gunboats hybrids, torpboats. Mostly I think this comes down to smoke length and detection radios for cap contesting. My numbered list is half about balance and half about factors people look for before a match starts that help them form tactics and strategy from the start of a match. Frankly I find your response dismissive and unconstructive. I think this is mainly down to my inabilty to flesh out what I wanted to discuss. My apologies. Would you care to expand your points?
  3. I can't think of a situation where you aren't better off being 1 to 2 km behind someone else. So put very simply why go first? I do it because it's fun and I hope to lead a team on to points, but I know I earn more credits and exp following others, waiting for ships to trade off, thinning the battlefield allowing a more skilled player room to maneuver without giving broadside. I know that spotting credits and exp was introduced, but of course I have haven't noticed it since it was purposely tuned for aggressive players to get no extra benefit but to punish campers into changing tac. So why do you go first? When are the best opportunities to go forward? How do you go about breaking down that big initial ball of ships? I look forward to some interesting thoughts and maybe the odd brief entertaining tale or two.

The golden rule, never go first?

It is an oversight that there is not shortcut for deploying consumables, that would eliminate the language barrier as they are auto translated I assume?
  5. Thracen

The golden rule, never go first?

Most of the time when I ask a wounded BB to slow so I can smoke them they plough on oblivious, some of the time I catch up anyway and smoke them and they continue on straight through at fulls speed to their deaths. It's so painful wasting a smoke on nothing. .
  6. Thracen

The golden rule, never go first?

I don't think that's overly true, I find picking up more damage behind firing second, most players will take a salvo then open up to get their rear guns firing. When they swing out after the leads fire is when I take my shots, more pens, more damage. I'm not talking about camping the corners, I'm talking about running just a tad behind a front man. Culiacan makes a good points, by the time you take the lead in most ships your fate is sealed by your allies deciding to follow, or well not. Fast ships leave ships behind easily and slower ships can't make the turn when they realise they've no friends. Another argument, and a strong one for going second.

The golden rule, never go first?

Yes, there is no doubt DDs are natural leaders in terms of class, however I find I'm always much better off behind another dd when I'm in mine. The russians don't have the stealth to close and you are much better off with a sneaky spotter giving you the range advantage. The ijns really benefit from having a us DD up front for that long smoke and gun power. US dds need spotters to sit effectively in smoke. Throw in RDF. hydro and radar and you are always better off behind a canary. Maybe I'm just commenting on team work, but even so I think the benefit for the tail man seems to far outweigh a lead ship. Of Course the ideal solution is rotation sharing damage and focus. I don't think I'll be mocked for saying this is a rare ideal.

Are IJN destroyers just bad or am I missing something?

Yeah the kagero now is very bad. If you get close enough to torp effectively any CC or DD can chase you down because you are too slow both in a straight line and in the turn. The torps are slow and have a massive spread at max range making them too easy to avoid. Oh and I just played a game today where 4 enemy ships couldn't equip hydro, 1 dd 2 amgis and a CV. How the hell are you mean to torp when like that? ambush? Sure but you're dead anyway because if you let anything get within 8km they will chase you down and kill you because you are slower than a bowel movement. F3s are the only thing making the IJN dds worth a damn, that and shimas massive payload, which she pays for with a huge cool down. I used to love the IJN dds, now I hate playing them.
  9. Thracen

    Kagero - any advice?

I used to love my IJN dds, even after the change up I enjoyed the kagero. But now I'm struggling to enjoy my dds. You are too reliant on your team mates, you cannot do anything without their support or their contribution. Thrace you ask, isn't that the same with all ships? No I reply because in a dd you get 1 mistake, you can't take an aggressive stance and hope for support. Cruisers, as long as they don't get caught in an obvious broadside get 2 to 3 mistakes a game. BBS they get 5-8. This goes doubly so for a kagero. If you get spotted by any ship in the game you are dead or lucky to be alive. Like every ship that isn't a BB you are best off doing very little for the first 8 minutes of a match. God I don't know how this game functions some times, the incentives to play selfishly behind a human shield are just too large. Sorry for my depressed whining.
  10. Reducing an opponents tickets to zero is another win condition. When a ship is sunk it gives the sinkers team points and reduces the sunk teams points. The plus and minus values do not match with the negative amount being smaller. This brings about the difficult condition of killing enough high ticket value ships fast enough before a team has no caps can cause this zero ticket lost. At least that's what I think.

For the love of god fix the RN smoke bug

The ticket didn't update my last missive before I closed it, I listed the time stamps and a second replay with the same speeds and turns producing double puffs.

Turns out they might believe us now Replies Enrico Barabanti 6 January 2017 15:40 Hello Thracen, Thank you for contacting us. I'm sorry for the delay in our answer. However, after taking a look at your replay, I was unable to find anything out of the ordinary. Both smoke screens you deploy do so exactly as they should - there is a small delay however. The smoke screen isn't set-up immediately and you can drive out of it (especially when you drive at 20 knots). I hope this clarifies the situation. Have fun on the battlefield! Thracen 6 January 2017 17:20 I find your answer rude and insulting. If I show you a replay where the smoke deploys 2 puffs slowing from the same speed. Would you then consider this mechanic bugged due to inconsistency. because I will happily do that for you. Lukasz Mikolajewicz 6 January 2017 17:23 Dear Thracen, Thank you for contacting us back. 13. Hey there everyone, These troublesome grinds maybe old hat to most players here as they probably have long since suffered through them. I'm newish and level a broad line of ships. I seem to have hit the rough patch in several lines at once. I am currently leveling the pensacola, colorado and tashkent at the same time. The tashkent in particular is completely useless with 10.5km gun range 2km extra spotting distance on all it's dd counterparts and 4 km torps. Honourable mention goes to the fuso with a stock range of something like 13km. So whats the point of this thread? I thought it might be comforting at least to hear others tales of woe in these ships along with the possibility of a few tips that might help people. That and a little awareness that some of these grinds are needlessly punishing.

After the countdown ends and the game begins....

I often find myself in the graveyard admiral role. I find myself dying early in my BB for going forward. I don't mind save for the fact that even when we outnumber the enemy 2 to 1 around a point they still sit behind an island as I go forward hydro active tanking all the way. Only once the entire rest of the map has been lost an the game already lost will they creep round and pick of the remaining two ships. This happens to me at least once a day.
  15. Thracen

    Do you like DD's

Honestly I'm more worried about the cc population. Just had a match with 5dds and 2 ccs on each team. The dds had free reign with no counter, the ccs obviously going down to bb fire early as such juicey effective targets. I like dds and play them a lot but without a radar cc or two to worry about or a cv I'm am unkillable. The only BB threat to dds are bismarck, scharnhorst and missouri and even they can be played around. RDF will help BBs avoid torps and chase but even then they wont have the speed to catch most dds.

    Captain Cowper's Colorado Guide

You're planning requires perfect knowledge of both location and intention of the enemy. Yes it's very important to plan in a slow ship but if your predictions are off you can get screwed because you have no ability to adapt. In this game position is king, and the colorado doesn't even make pawn. When you actually play the colorado, you will feel this painfully. Knowing minutes before you die that it is inevitable, with no plays available to you but to go down swinging.

so WG you dont give a f. about Belfast smoke problem ?

Watch the replay I linked it happens twice as below 20 knots.
  18. Thracen

    Captain Cowper's Colorado Guide

Every comment I make in this thread is about the colorados speed and you're inability to make tactical decisions because of it leaving you more vulnerable than any other BB of its tier. first post "When every ship is faster than you they get to pick the engagement not you. " second post "you're chances of a favorable engagement in a colorado are very low because of her speed" third post "Because you are slow you will always suffer more from cover being present than a similarly skilled and matched up opponent with more speed." fourth post "vulnerable on the flank to all the other much faster battleships" So when you say yes the colorado is committed to it's attacks, as in yes it is slow and has limited options because of it but that isn't what I am saying I am truly confused.
  19. Thracen

so WG you dont give a f. about Belfast smoke problem ?

I wonder, how did you learn to write without being able to read? This whole issue is when you only get a single puff. I always slow down from 20knots in my belfast. about 60% of the time I get 2 puffs 40% I get 1 and die. I tried going slower still results vary. As for only playing with 1 puff, you are a sitting duck. Any fool can blind fire into a single cloud let alone torp. This bug is a right pain. Just imagine if your guns only fired 60% of the time or your torps were duds half the time. https://wowreplays.com/Replay/26278 Here is a link to a replay where it happens twice triggering at or below 20 knots.
  20. Hold on, did octavian say that smoke puffs depend on if you are detected or concealed or not? A clear explanation that was not!

    Captain Cowper's Colorado Guide

No it isn't actually my point is these situations are much harder to avoid and escape when you are slow, and much more punishing when you don't have turtleback.
  22. Thracen

    Captain Cowper's Colorado Guide

1 vs 1 the colorado can be hard to crack, but all the while she is bow on she's got no firepower and you can only be bow on to 1 opponent leaving you vulnerable on the flank to all the other much faster battleships you face.

    Ships that are unplayable stock

There a lots of ships I didn't think about, on this list now. I'm certainly glad I don't have to go back to the IJN dds that now can't stealth torp. Have heard about CVs too I think that's pretty bad since you will always be matched up against a cv, any disadvantage in a mirror match will be telling. I think grinding 3 bad ships at once was a mistake, but you never know until you sail a ship yourself if you get on with them or not, as show by the differing opinions on the german CC line. I also think it'd worth mentioning that of course the higher up you go the more matches/exp it takes to get up to those upgrades. Which is why I think I dislike the trashcan so much. Massive detection, very situation 4km torps, short range guns 10.5 and a short smoke make a lot of weaknesses to play around.

    Ships that are unplayable stock

Honestly, I don't begrudge the ginds too much. with careful use of of a lot of the suggestions above they are manageable most of the time save for those nasty bottom tier games. That said now the missouri exists free exp is now much more precious so when I would usually cherry pick the most helpful upgrades now I tough it out. It was the first time playing this game I really noticed the free to play/pay element even while running a premium account. I think this was further compounded by the fact that I haven't been able to play as much as I usually can because of the holidays. When the 1 hour you get to play with double or triple exp going on gets put towards bad stock ships because it's too good to pass up leaving your favourites unplayed is a hard choice to make.
  25. Thracen

    Captain Cowper's Colorado Guide

If you turn too much you lose even more speed to an enemy, and cover is just another obstacle for you to slowly sail around or your target to take cover behind. Because you are slow you will always suffer more from cover being present than a similarly skilled and matched up opponent with more speed. I really believe that not only 1 on 1 but in most scenarios a colorado is woefully outperformed by its peers.
