    getting political

I don't know what the OP tells us about his life for. I don't frankly care if he's living on the street without a thing to his name; TKing on the grounds that somebody else disagrees with your views is wrong, end of. PS: I'm also an avid anti-brexit supporter, but would never even dream of reacting like this. People like you let the side down and are the reason papers like the Sun drool anti-youth anti-EU hate, which is ultimately part of the problem...I share your anger towards brexit...I agree with you that they've most likely ruined whole aspects of our generations' future, purely based upon blatant lies and ignorance. I get it. But everyone is entitled to his or her views and punitive behaviour to this end got nobody anywhere ever. Else why defend democracy in the first place? Seriously...people like you only confirm all the crap the older generation spouts about youth in this country. I know it's 'just a game', but where does it end? This is as socially incorrect as punching someone because you disagree with them, IMHO.

[LCARS ONLINE] TERMINAL CONSOLE ID 67786 READY FOR USE BY AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY. REPORT ALL PROBLEMS TO ENGINEERING OR COMMAND Greetings, Raw Recruits & ranking officers! So you've decided to help defend the Federation from hostile forces? Good for you! Here's your red shirt and phaser; get on the transporter pad and I'll beam you down. You'll be exploring the toxic demon planet of Alpha Celti 6 today. Very low chance of survival, so have fun! Oh! While you're waiting to go, here is a thread for you to discuss the various happenings and occurrences in our corner of the galaxy. Hear something about a Rogue Romulan? Report it here! Enjoy hearing about Picard's latest romp aboard the USS Enterprise E? Discuss it here! Want to nerd out over a certain class of ship? We welcome that! Anything space related goes! [TERMINAL ONLINE] READY FOR USE. NO BAD LANGUAGE OR ROMULAN ALE. YOU WILL BE VAPORIZED IF CAUGHT INFRACTING THESE SIMPLE RULES. Why am I posting this? Well, I know there are some closet trekkies here. I KNOW you're here. Also, Star Trek has a lot of parallels with 20th Century history. A LOT. In fact, Rodenburry based everything he wrote on real history; in his own words, ..Star Trek was simply a vehicle for ethical thought on the history of the 20th century. The fact it's a Sci-Fi set in space is purely for entertainment purposes. Hopefully we can discuss these in due course. Even if you don't know your Picard from your Janeway, you're very welcome to join us here and let your inner nerd out! Let us know what you think about Star Trek; good or bad! In fact, I welcome the bad; makes for good conversation! Come on, don't be shy! Let's get our nerd on! Tell you what I'll be controversial just to get conversation flowing: I like the theme to Enterprise. It rules and was a super amazing choice by the producers. The best ST theme IMHO. Anyone who denies this is wrong. 'It's been a long time, getting from there to here. But our time has finally come!' Sick of it yet?

Never played Bridge Commander but heard nothing but good; would recommend? Anyone here played Armada 3? It's a super mod for Sins of a Solar Empire. I got really into it at one point but each match would take 4-10 hours (if everyone played really passively and, say, there are 8 of you) and it just wasn't sustainable...just wonder if anyone here plays it? It's the best ST Universe game out there IMHO as you have the entire fleet/faction at your command (not just Feds too; anyone. It's kinda like STO but completely PVP and you're no limited to one ship; you build up whole fleets). It's basically Total War for treksters! I used to play as the Klingons and end up taking entire systems from the Federation just spamming birds of prey and building disruptor installations on every planet (including theirs!) But yeah lack of enough friends to play it with and super long sessions meant I stopped playing.

I have a family member (great uncle) who served aboard HMS Canada before her transfer to Chile. Don't know a huge amount about what he did aboard her, except that he was very badly injured; but yeah...just made me do a double take when I saw the name.

Great to see you here, Kitty! Glad to see my guide is doing this fine community some favours too Speaking of which; if any of you fine ladies and gentlemen have any nice screenshots of Mikasa, I wouldn't mind having a look and potentially using them in my guide if you'd want that! Need some good screenshots but I hate going into the game to purposely get them; feels forced. I've also left a reply to StringWitch on the same thread which some of you may be interested in; detailing some good books I've read regarding Pre-Dreadnoughts

I'll have to bear that in mind...I note my NC has an extra 10mm by comparison. I guess that's how she can bounce such an incredible amount. I can also easily believe Kiev is capable of that!

It was actually a perfectly aimed torp spread which was stopped about 2 meters from his hull by the points reaching 1000 XD Yep I can believe it...those 5 citadels were all on a Schors. They're beasts.

Yep the range handicap will get you killed if you're not careful. However, her accuracy is pretty damn nice as you say and that tends to compensate imo I've actually decided to not push Rank 10 this season; purely so I can experience whatever sub-rank 15 is in Season 6. That and I just don't have the time to grind anymore. Also, add me in-game if you like as I can always use friendly division partners Nope! 100s more on the way! Prepare to spend! I don't know if I agree on the 'troll' designation, as it is possible to get solid performance from her, despite the wonky RNG. But I do agree she's heavily reliant on RNGesus for a lot of shots. Thanks all the same Depending on what you're after, there was a series of books I read years ago which covered the transition perfectly and I learnt the real core of the topic from. I believe they were titled 'The end of the sailing Navy' and 'The Heyday of steam', in order. Jane's fighting ships is always an interesting insight too, if you can get your hands on one/some. I've also read (probably several 100 by now) general naval history books which will always cover this period in depth as I'm sure you already know; charity shops, steam rallies, book fairs are perfect for this. If you live in Britain and are prepared to travel, Hay-On-Wye has some excellent bookshops with entire sections on specific periods. Places like Chatham dockyard (to name probably the best one) also have whole shops dedicated to it. I have a book I actually bought in the HMS Warrior gift shop, simply titled 'Ironclads'. It's a modern paper-back, not very long but a seriously good read and I'm just sorry I can't find it online for you, though this one is in the same series and is very, very good (though they do seem to use the term 'Battleship' throughout that one!). 'History of the Royal Navy' (normally found alongside 'History of the British Army') is another good one. This one is a must too, as is this one for seeing how they were used. I have one called 'The Emergence of the modern Capital Ship'. it's an old non-illustrated leather-bound, by Stanley Sander published in 1937. A seriously, seriously interesting book but sadly I'd be surprised if you can get hold of it Hope you can though as it's worth it! Google seems to have a much later edition of it. Also bearing in mind I read most of these years ago, so I cant vouch for any availabilities... Havn't read it myself, but probably will; this one looks like it could be a good read I hate myself so much for this, but I have a book which went into great detail regarding the transition from broadside to turret (it featured Cowper Coles heavily)...can't for the life of me remember its name though Actually while I'm on the subject of Coles, HMS Captain (1870) is a great place to start for this kind of research Seeing how pivotal she was, she'll be featured in most works regarding this period (assuming you need/want a place to start; I'm adding this for others reading the post too).

Sorry to interrupt, but just thought I'd say thanks to you; I'd rep you up if I could. I've been following your advice in Kiev and am getting some slightly better results. In fact, if not for points rudely interrupting me I'd have nailed a New Mexico here too and got 20k more damage. (2409 base XP; I know 100k is not much for most people in Kiev, but for me that's pretty good in a Russian Destroyer) Perhaps I'm a little less of a pure team supporter now Anyway I don't want to derail the thread so everyone but Warburton please ignore this post!

    Disliked Ship Guide #3: Mikasa

I knew someone would pick up on that This is why I added 'in the strict sense'. The thing is, you're absolutely right; any Ironclad Frigate with self-propulsion was exactly that; a steam ironclad frigate, not a 'line-of-(battle'-ship). Naturally they were eventually re-designated ironclads and then eventually Battleships. But this is my point; Mikasa came at a time when that designation was mostly un-used. Many books and publications from that exact era (1880-1890s) will still refer to them as 'Ironclad frigates' or even as 'Battle Ships'. It wasn't until the 20th Century that the two words were joined together and the whole word 'Battleship' became common to describe, as you say, the entire spectrum of these vessels; most formerly, Ironclad Warships. It's simply a case of our modern lexicon being applied to something that slightly pre-dates it. From what I know, the Pre-Dreadnought does slightly pre-date this allocation. To be honest, it's always been my understanding that the term 'Battle Ship', throughout the 19thC (one word or two) would be loosely applied to ships exceeding 68 guns - so 3rd 2nd and 1st rates, basically. Sixth to Fourth-rates (including sloops) *could* be labeled line-of-battle ships, but this would be incorrect as of course a Sixth rate would get blown to bits in the line of battle; even fourth rates historically struggled when dropped into the main line of main actions (though it's important to note they excelled in all other duties...early Battle-cruisers, anyone? ). So the term 'Frigate' was used to serve that gap between fourth ratings and sloops/brigs..which is why, due to their lack of guns mostly, fast ships like the 40-gun HMS Warrior were put into the Frigate category; despite her clearly being what we'd (like to) call an early Battleship due to her armour and sheer size. So the term is, to a degree, interchangeable when applied to ships during that period; let's not forget that many less significant navies were still using 3rd 2nd and 1st rates well into the end of the 19thC. Anyway trivia aside, Battleship is technically the correct designation in this context so I guess strictly speaking you are correct. I just felt it important to highlight the fact Mikasa comes from an era where 'Battleship' didn't necessarily mean what we all think it means (ie Iron Duke, Iowa, Dreadnought et. al). Pre-Dreads were a form of the evolution of ship-design in their own right, and due to their period, to label them as Battleships; rightly or wrongly; seems a little out-of-date to me. Their rapid status into obsolete means it's better to see them as a cross between Super heavy frigate (though I admit this is a slight bastardization of the term; but that's what the Victorians called 'em!) and a Battleship. They were, afterall, considerably smaller and more under-armed than most Dreads. Not that this is aimed at you, StringWitch, as I realize it most certainly isn't; but for anyone else reading this who wants to check my facts; you're welcome to, but know that while Wikipedia and Encyclopedias in general are a great knowledge base for this kind of thing, the reader just needs to ensure they understand that they're being presented the most commonly accepted facts; not necessarily things which may have been contested in the day, ie if the Battleship term would've stuck in those very early days. As you can see, I'm not convinced it did initially; at least not in the mainstream. But of course I may be totally wrong here, I admit that; all I'm going on is the books I've studied etc and it's all third party info, afterall.

DS9 was brilliant and the battles just made that series all the better. BUT. I had a fairly big issue with DS9 when it came to battles. The thing is, you never saw what were meant to be the other large engagements of the war. For instance, where the Cardassians (I believe) complain that they lost an '....entire order of infantry on nothing...' in one of the final episodes, I really feel that would've been the perfect place for us to finally see some Federation ground troop action! I know the series centered around DS9 but there were plenty of other battle sequences which didn't happen near DS9. I forget the exact name, but wasn't there a big battle (the one Worcester's first screenshot is from, actually, with the Galaxy firing a double phaser spread into the Cardassian Galor) which took place far from DS9? Just seems like there were a few missed opportunities to really show the war unfold...but again, I guess it's a TV show not a film, with a budget to match! And story-wise DS9 was absolute gold IMHO. Odo is a boss, as is Sisko! (I actually thought I'd hate Sisko; he seemed way too mellow and kinda...meh...to begin with. But yeah...he became the embodiment of a typical Federation commander as the series wore on, which was just awesome to see ) I've never seen Babylon at all, whatsoever...but hear nothing but rave reviews about it. Would you all recommend, I guess? _cosmo: Agreed on Picard. Agreed on Ent. I really loved that aspect of the show; it was fresh but in a good way. Problem is, everything else about it (dialogie, plot advance, some characters, some tech, some battles they had etc) just felt so...crap...for want of a better word. I just didn't care as much as I would, say, if it were Geordi and Worf going into the frey! Did love Trip though. Trip was exactly how'd I'd imagine a chief engineer of the early Federation. Honourable, rough round the edges, intelligent but a little dumb at the same time, and a bit of a womanizer; bit like Kirk actually when I think about I also hated Troi as much as I loved Data! She was eye candy more than anything which I guess all ST has. TOS is good for me, I think, cos I love the stories. They are SO political. It's like I've said to HMS_Worcester before; TOS is like South Park. If you don't get why it's praised so much, you never will. Not to say you're thick if you don't get it; just it's an acquired taste for some

Despite being a smartass noob, you're absolutly spot-on. I'd LOVE for that to be in the game as a mechanic for both this and all early dreads; as well as Campbeltown I sometimes hate the ram on the front of Mikasa as it means I end up eating torps which normally would go right under my bow. It's just the wrong depth! And you're right; they do look a lot like bulbous bows. Coincidence? I think not!

British Accent Voice is Hilarious (Please Change it)

TBH I never really looked at those in depth, so can't comment; but I do know Ericsson took a lot (and I mean a LOT) of inspiration from Coles. In fact, I believe a lot of aspects he straight up copied. But again I'm ill-informed on a lot to do with early US ironclads so I'll keep quiet If they did have to do that though, sounds like a royal pain! I believe HMS Captain and the subsequent British Turret ironclads didn't suffer that drawback whatsoever.

    Captain Cowper's Colorado Guide

I stand corrected. then To be honest I've barely ever fired AP at BBs from any Cruiser without 8-inch guns (probably a weakness, I'll admit that); so I have no reason to doubt you. I know I've been trashed in Colorado by German Cruisers before so I can fully believe what you say. However, it does take sustained fire for them to take that kind of damage; that flimsy 25mil armour is only the skin on the pudding, afterall All in all it depends on how out-numbered the US BB is, and how good your own position is with the German Cruiser.

Anyone else noticing citadel on new mexico

I did. I'm not just being a jerk here saying '..well it never happens to me ergo it's impossible and you're a liar'; I'm trying to be as sincere as is possible. This just doesn't happen, regardless of how much fire I have coming in the bow will 9/10 protect me well. I receive pretty nasty damage sometimes when bow-in, but without exception it's always from shot fired into my superstructure; not my bow (unless we're talking higher calibre shells here but we're not, so...). I've even had a few citadels from going bow-in, as the OP suggests. But again, it's from plunging fire and imo nothing to do with angling but simply the fact RNG is on their side and they get a lucky shot between the bridge and funnel or something. You can get plunging fire citadels on North Carolina from the front if it gets between the funnels; very rarely mind you, but it is possible and does happen. Sorry if I came across as a smart a**se as it wasn't intended; I was just pointing out that she's still a tank despite the enemy's potential ability to do this
