It's much better than Ultimate Frontier, but it suffers of the same problem in requiring a decent amount of coordination and having somewhat complex objectives. All that makes very well suited for a division, because all that coordination etc. is actually fun. But it's not fun to do a complex operation when you can see, from the outset, that a few people are about to do something completely unhelpful. And don't react to simple English instructions.

Not 2000+ games, but I used to run (for like 20 games) a spare 10 point captain in the Eire. You'd be surprised what a T1 ship does with 150 mm guns when you have DE and IFHE. I stopped because, though a staunch atheist, I figure there's a 0.0001% chance Hell exists, and I don't want to end up there.

Unicum players being rude IG, what to do ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I think the age variance is definitely a part of it. I suspect, specifically a generational difference between people who spent their formative years in online gaming communities, and those who're older. For that older generation, I think the instinct would be to be on their regular behaviour. I was already an adult when online gaming really became a thing (unless you count racing games played with two dialup modems and hilarious latency). I'm not saying all young people are asses online, because I know that's not the case. And likewise some older people are just plain dickheads, and had in essence been waiting for the Internet to come and to thrive in. But those who give these nihilistic rationalizations that it's in fact OK to be an [edited] -- I suspect these folks are younger. (It came up in one discussion, that especially on NA, there's a fair number of players who've actually SERVED on the ships included in this game. Mainly the last WW2 era survivors of the Desert Storm era, the Midway and the Iowa class ships. Pretty cool when you think about it.)- 167 replies

Cursed: My Lion has a WR of 43% after a fairly healthy sample of 91 games. All my other performance stats for that ship are above server average, it just loses lots of games. Blessed: My Belfast is at 72.5% after 109 games. I'm really not that good with it, it just wins lots of games.

I'd like T9 in the sense that it's normally that weird tier people leave behind as soon as they grind that T10 ship. Ranked is a great way to put these oft neglected tiers in the spotlight. But yeah, I guess premium ship imbalance might be an issue. I'd also like T5. It gets a really crappy Random MM, but has many fun ships.

Now that alt camos are a thing, could we maybe get the Mountbatten Pink? I'd totally buy for a couple RN premiums for 750 gold.

BB Dammed if you do Dammed if you don't

This is a fair criticism, but a couple things to keep in mind. The Conqueror is actually really easy to kill with concentrated fire into superstructure. The HP pool is small, it takes damage quick, and the reload of that famous regeneration button is quite long. So you need to be careful (within reason). Also because of that heal is so ludicrous, a Conqueror at 75% health might've been damn close to death just moments ago. I play the Conqueror in what I think is a fairly ballsy manner, and you receive a lot of unfair criticism from people who don't consider the whole picture. -

He's free to do so, but IMO that's similar to being that 12-year-old punk who's a real big shot among 9-year-olds. I actually agree fully with the problems of entitlement. But I don't think bad players of video games mingling with good players of video games is a good example. When the good ones willingly come to a place that's explicitly open to the bad ones.- 167 replies

The mission descriptions are actually faaairly clear and unambiguous in this game. In Warplanes, and with that game's events and daily missions, half the time you don't really know what you have to do. Made me miss Warships.

BB Dammed if you do Dammed if you don't
jss78 replied to Turtlesandwich's topic in General Discussion
This is true. I guess I was thinking of a situation where there's a friendly DD/cruiser screen (the guys presumably complaining). I see no wisdom pushing into an undetected DD when unescorted. I try to think of BB positioning in terms of an "acceptable level of risk". I'm willing to put myself in that potential torpedo zone, because there's also an inherent value in taking the heat off the friendly DD/cruisers. If I stay in perfect safety, they'll die, and though safe I'm unlikely to win the game on my own. But I try to keep it such that I don't die early very often. -

Just a comment on the Conqueror, I don't see any reason to play it at long range per se. Your concealment is 11.8 km, so you'd want to play close to that. You'll still have that window to disengage, but even with Conqueror's nice accuracy (which you note), you'll hit with more shells from closer up. Successful BB play is just surprisingly hard. You really should ideally bring that armour in front, so it's you tanking and not the CL/CA. But with slow speed and worse concealment (but yeah, not the Conq) it's a bigger commitment in a BB, you just can't escape as easily. It's humanly understandable to hate a big guy sitting back, out of harm's way, when you're a small guy taking a beating in front. -

Yeah, I think it's unreasonable to treat the Random queue as some elite competitive environment. As far as online video gaming goes, Random queue is just plain casual, all the way up to T10. If someone wants to play there, he's free to. I don't PERSONALLY understand why some people play endlessly at T10 with 40% win rates. I stopped for a good long while at T4-T7 before progressing further, and I think this saved my team mates some frustration. But ultimately if someone likes to spend an evening exploring map borders in a Tirpitz, he's free to. And if someone else finds this insufferable, there are more exclusive competitive gaming environments available.- 167 replies

As far as African Americans and other socio-economically disadvantaged groups. I live in Finland, and even here it's a well recognized problem that socio-economic position is heavily inherited. Our country has a world-famous school system -- no matter how poor you are, and how bad a neighborhood you live in, the school and teachers you get are world-class. It simply doesn't help very much. These people look just like everyone else, they face no discrimination, they have every opportunity. But still there's a strong tendency for them to become poor, unemployed, substance abusers etc., just like their parents. We're dealing with something like a social capital in this. Regardless of what educational opportunities you provide, there's an outlook, confidence, and support you can only get from home. And it's sadly really important To me the TL;DR here is, once someone's fallen down to a bad socio-economic circumstances -- whether due to historical racism or other reasons --it's really hard work to lift them out of the hole. If this is hard in Finland, with the most egalitarian society in the world, it's no wonder to me it's slow for a groups whose ancestors lived in a viciously racist society two generations ago, and were slaves a few generations earlier.

Just report them, and if it's a case of blatant racism, take a screen shot and send a support ticket. I haven't run into a hardcore racist in a while, which leads me to believe either the support tickets or the autobans work pretty well. I'm a flawed human being and sometimes shoot back at these people in chat. Racists are typically really, really stupid people, and can get hilariously triggered.

About a week after the French CL/CA line landed, I ran into an Emile Bertin in my V170. Launched my torps, she evades. No problem, I'll just run into concealment. Hold on, not gaining any distance. Wait, now she's closing in. Gunning me down, torps reloading in 40 seconds. I have never felt so helpless in this game.

I'm not sure it's typically unicums who rage hardest. I have a habit of looking up these people's WR's, and they tend to be way lower than myself. I'm not a unicum with 57% solo and 60% combined WR. Most typically it's some guy who's just broken the median at 51% and feeling really, REALLY happy about it.- 167 replies

What is the point of the GO NAVY competition
jss78 replied to it3llig3nc3's topic in General Discussion
It's just another grind to motivate you play. If that 3rd daily container is not enough -- or you already got it -- maybe that shark/eagle container will make you play one more game. We also get to ponder the relative merits of accipitrids vs. pleurotremata. -
I feel like in these threads are often explained by a couple cognitive biases. First, people tend to ascribe meanings to random patterns in data. Second, people have selective memories and forget the many times nothing unusual happens. We all do this, and I've found myself cursing WG, the player base etc. to hell too. But it's helpful to be mindful of the above biases -- sometimes you can catch yourself in the act of committing them. Looking back with at my ~6000 games, I've had perhaps 2 win streaks of >10 games, and also about 2 lose streaks of >10 games, during that time. Then an increasing number of shorter win/loss streaks, and then thousands of games with a non-descript pattern of wins and losses. With that long hindsight, I see no evidence of a MM conspiracy.

I'm not sure why you'd need to snipe from 20 km. My preferred play style with the Conqueror is to play right around that (ludicrous) concealment limit, about 12-14 km. Even if you spam HE at angled targets, you'll hit with more shells from closer in. I just wish they'd do something about the 457 mm's, I'd much rather do the above with those guns. My gut feeling is the ship is just about balanced. I dislike the cruiser-like concealment and the invulnerable citadel, but it's kinda balanced by the vulnerability during the long cooldown of the Repair pRegeneration button.
-
I feel like a full tank-build captain Conqueror/Lion is optimal, especially after they balanced those ships by making the Repair Party cool-down longer. Hence the percentage-based buff in JoAT does more. But if you hate Conqueror/Lion -- and I don't blame you if you do -- he could also be great in a CL/DD using the buffed Smoke Screen Expert and JoAT to boost all consumables.

Hood is perfectly fine. Buffing ships like this -- with distinct weaknesses but fine when considered as a whole -- is how power creep happens. Belfast stands out alright, but not in a good way. The real positive standout among RN ships is Warspite, the most enjoyable, awesome and perfect BB in the game. It's a damn shame WG didn't follow that style for the entire line.

What was the goal of Raptor rebalance again?
jss78 replied to BlackYeti's topic in General Discussion
I finally got a pair of back-to-back, five-star victories last night. These games were really late at night, with only the true no-lifers online. Maybe that's the key! I feel like the best thing you can do is either: - Take a CV, and really impress upon your team that you don't need help with the enemy CV's; or - Take a good brawler BB, and get in front of Raptor, just to guarantee someone's doing this. Like @philjd above I've had good luck with the Warspite. Also Mutsu, with reliable guns, ludicrous secondary volume, AND torpedoes , feels really good sitting in front and killing anything that comes your way. I feel like some of the spawn/route geometries are more difficult than others. The second CV can spawn right in your face, and is quickly killed, or be racing north out on the western edge, and hard to kill without a CV or without leaving Raptor unprotected.- 75 replies

It becomes a bit like playing against an AS carrier. You need to play conservative and ultimately lower your expectations a bit. You'll also be against T6 or at worst T7 AA, with lots of defensive fire. Especially early game, look for strongest friendly AA bubbles, and use those to keep your planes safe. Be patient, towards late game you'll get stragglers who're vulnerable to your strikes. But study those ships well: T6'ish some ships are still in near WW1 AA spec while others are murderous. The variation is huge, and critical for you. Look at what the other friendly CV is doing -- is he tying lots of enemy fighters and creating an opening for you? While you can't strafe, you can strafe DODGE. So practise this, it'll serve you well later. When the enemy gets greedy, try to dodge the strafe so he ends up over your team's AA. Then immediately click on his plane and lock him in dogfight over that AA. While I think it was an awful decision to mix T5 and T6 CV's, fortunately it's quite rare to run into T6 CV who's really good at strafing. So it's normally not as awful as it might.
