Why does Developers seemingly try to kill Shimakaze?
tenacious_torps replied to ThinderChief's topic in General Discussion
This entire thread seems to point quite insistently in the opposite direction. Shima is for patient and calculating players only these days and every little bit of information helps with that. Of course, most people will moan the moment they see a shima on their team by now, because not many players fit that description. Try to become one of them, you'll find that shima can still be surprisingly influential. Get over the idea of having to take an early cap, consider it your job to stay alive until you can do what shima can still do better than every other DD: one-shot BBs. They're always the last ones standing. If you're still alive then, you WILL decide the match. Especially if you got RPF to tell you where any remaining DD hunter is. Will you end up with matches, where you never really get to do all that much? Sure, just like with other situational ships. So your second most important task is spotting and again RPF helps a lot with doing that at low risk to your survival. Is there an unspotted Radar, maybe even a Worchester? At tier 10 you should have the experience to tell if RPF points to that or another DD. And one casual glimpse at the teams will tell you if that DD is one you can outspot comfortably or one that's a nono. If that's the case, you screen your team and patiently wait for them to overextend, so you can take that engagement on your terms with lots of helpful guns pointing in their general direction, because you pinged them out long before they were actually spotted. Take it or leave it, but that's how not to be useless and a burden to your team in a shima. -
HEPL!!! Ernst Gaede, playing tips anyone?
tenacious_torps replied to RAHJAILARI's topic in General Discussion
Two RPFs in a division can triangulate exact positions though. On the gun question: on Z23 at tier 8 you'll likely take the bigger guns anyway, so you might as well get used to them. -
Go Navy boxes have been removed from premium shop. Why?
tenacious_torps replied to Acetessigester's topic in General Discussion
I am convinced the people doing marketing and customer relations for WG are running a competition of their very own on who can create the biggest confusion by the least significant trigger event. This one looks like a winner to me. FFS, even I am really, really deeply impressed. Takes sheer genius to piss people off by not taking their money. -
HEPL!!! Ernst Gaede, playing tips anyone?
tenacious_torps replied to RAHJAILARI's topic in General Discussion
Position is everything. In DDs like Gaede you do best on the weaker flank of your team, where an enemy push is likely. Don't hesitate to reposition accordingly at the start. Obviously this helps with your torp success rate, but also when it comes to enemy DDs. They will get yelled at a lot to effing spot you... Use that to your advantage, try to control where engagements happen - bait enemy DDs into over-extending so you can take them on closer to your support than theirs. As for capping: At mid tier the hydro isn't really strong enough to bully caps like a Z-52, but at least you have less radars to deal with usually. Nevertheless, don't throw away your ship for nothing. What good is a cap, that your team is unlikely to hold anyway? The longer you stay alive in a DD, the more valuable you become. Right at the start caps aren't all that important, not in random battles anyway, so only go for early caps, if the situation is skewed heavily in your favour. Generally words of wisdom, even more so in rather clumsy DDs like Gaede. ForlornSailor's point about gun range is very valid btw. -
Rightful Heir to the Cleveland in Operations?
tenacious_torps replied to Lord0's topic in General Discussion
Budyonny or Molotov for me, operations are about guns first and foremost and if you know how to keep them floating nothing beats these two when it comes to making short work of many lower tier ships quickly. -
Well, indeed. But that just shows these are valid, as in not self-evident, questions. I'm not sure anybody at WG is really asking them, let alone putting much effort into answering them. Am I alone in thinking they probably should?

CHAT - BAN: This idiocy should stop sometime soon!
tenacious_torps replied to SomeBot's topic in Off-Topic
There's only one thing worthy of debate here and that's the "cheater have not sex with a girl" line. Is that supposed to imply cheaters are gay or that it doesn't count as sex when you cheat on somebody or get cheated or that cheaters do threesomes and what has anything of that to do with playing on online game, which - just as playing golf - is widely assumed to be more of an indication of not getting enough anyway? I've given mucho consideration and am still feeling mightily befuddled. Somebody please halp.- 49 replies

Operation "Killer Whale" is waste of time
tenacious_torps replied to RenamedUser_92906789's topic in General Discussion
Yesyes, very funny, but also entirely missing the point. In most operations what works and what doesn't is very clear after you've had a couple of runs. This should be as easy as it gets then: you know what works, you communicate it to your team and replicate the success. But even if you take the time to actually write it down in detail, you can't even count on anybody on the team understanding even a single syllable of that. I've had teams that... well, let's just say I've learned what "eff off" means in the majority of European languages from my efforts in that regard. Pinging the map and hitting f-keys only gets you that far, there's obvious room for improvement, but it's not equally obvious how that should look like. Let's make operations the laboratory where we find out. -
The real question: Is radar contributing anything to a better user experience?

Operation "Killer Whale" is waste of time
tenacious_torps replied to RenamedUser_92906789's topic in General Discussion
Operations sometimes can be particularly frustrating, because it is so very clear what needs to be done, but teams just don't get it into their heads. In other words: Operations make something abundantly clear, that is also a general problem of this game; in a multi-lingual gaming environment the tools provided by WG to coordinate your team's actions simply do not cut it. This would also make them the ideal testing environment for the development of something more useful, without having to mess with the bread and butter business of random battles initially. Wasted opportunity, imho. -
Her speed clearly qualifies her as a DD, right?

Indefinite queue times for CVs in the night, please
tenacious_torps posted a topic in General Discussion
Everybody who plays late at night on occasion has seen it more than once, underpopulated battles due to CVs camping queue. It's not fun for anybody involved and can be rectified with one line of code, so ffs get cracking, WG. -
T-61, what time today (Friday 10th) will it be credited?
tenacious_torps replied to BeauNidl3's topic in General Discussion
It's yet another way to amuse oneself, if so inclined. And it works pretty well, in this case also thanks to your efforts, kind sir. -
Radar is not an insurmountable problem, but MM taking it at least somewhat into consideration would make for a better experience. Simple enough. Can we move on finally? Thanks y'all ever so kindly.

Indefinite queue times for CVs in the night, please
tenacious_torps replied to tenacious_torps's topic in General Discussion
Yes, I am aware of that possibility. Yet I have only seen that happen once in all the time I've been playing WoWS, while it's practically a given once a night on the graveyard shift. You know the numbers at least as well as I do, did you really had to pull one of the affronted rack here? It's a real issue and it has nothing whatsoever to do with CV hate. That is wisdom on the levels of King Salomon. -
Which forum members have you seen in random battles?
tenacious_torps replied to Cobra6's topic in General Discussion
Met @lup3s and... damn, I don't remember anymore, somebody else from his clan whose name I'm pretty sure I recognized from here in my Lion. He was in a Lyon and his division mate in a Gadjah, they did their best, but I can't say the same for the rest of their team. Sorry, didn't realize until after the match, but gave the customary compliments. -

tenacious_torps replied to BeauNidl3's topic in General Discussion
Online gaming addiction has been added to the relevant professional diagnostic manuals and this thread is evidence why that's not so ridiculous as it sounds at first. Nobody who's spent 25k shinyshinies has no other ship in port to play, so chill, dudes and dudettes. Cold turkey isn't around the corner yet and I'm sure most of you will have some other OP seal clubber at hand to amuse yourselves. -
T-61 finally coming - and get it a week early!
tenacious_torps replied to Mr_Tayto's topic in General Discussion
First the torture boat debacle, now this... how hot exactly is it in Leningrad right now? I had no illusions to begin with, when it comes to WG's place on a ethics vs greed matrix, but could you at least try to keep the frequency down to one major eff-up per quarter? You're very quickly turning into your own caricatures. Also, it's annoying af. I really wanted a Boise, but that door closed with the missions for free Nueve. A German prem DD is still on the list and the prior offer simply doesn't cut the mustard, but giving this display of corporate greed, I really have no choice but to pass again. -
After the operation is running for a few days the situation has gotten a lot better in my experience. Got 5 stars on the first attempt yesterday and today with random teams, not really much of a struggle. Communicate what needs to be done very clearly (and repeatedly), pick a ship that can tank and carry and it's actually pretty easy. Scharnhorst and Nelson are the best choices, imo. Scharnhorst because torps so the missouri isn't a problem, Nelson because her high arcs makes dealing with the King CV even from inside the target area a possibility, if the cruiser tasked with that messes up.

If I missed something obvious, let me know and I'll add it. This is not intended as a discussion thread for any of the relevant issues, pure and simple your personal enjoyment factors plz.

Au revoir, you old standalone launcher. The "Wargaming Game Center" will be forced upon us all in the near future
tenacious_torps replied to MrFingers's topic in General Discussion
Guess that's the reason why I don't use any of the above outside a virtual machine then, if at all. Which isn't an option with WGC. Your definition of a power user is... cute, btw. -
Blame the game, not the player. In case of WoWS this is especially true, since WG go out of their way wherever they can to push people to tier 10. For obvious reasons - €€€. Heck, it was even part of the official reasoning for sticking to +-2MM - "to emphasize the benefits of high tier ships". And yes, I rage just like everybody else nevertheless, but it helps a bit to keep this in mind. This game has always had lots of potential and occasionally you still get the one brilliant battle, but WG's stewardship of their very own product is simply as appalling as their general ethics questionable. *cough* Nueve *cough*

The biggest vulnerability is the integrated mini-browser, about which we know very little at this point. That alone is more than enough reason to be very suspicious. Just take into account how often your regular browser receives updates - and how that often enough is far from sufficient and what plethora of thingies you need to run to keep that half-way safe. You don't have that option here. In fact you don't have any control over what goes on there, neither on your side, nor on the servers game center pulls its content from. It's the equivalent of leaving your front door unlocked and going on vacation. -
If anyone deserves a permaban.....
tenacious_torps replied to JFCFuller's topic in General Discussion
Actually I am pretty sure that line is punishable by law in Germany. If you are German, you might want to consider paying your local law enforcement a visit, armed with some screenshots and the replay file, if support isn't acting upon that. I highly suspect they will get a timely reminder that it isn't exactly optional, if they want to continue doing business in Germany. You'd pretty much do the world a favour. Keywords: Volksverhetzung, Anstiftung zum Völkermord, Störung der öffentlichen Ordnung. Especially so since this game is rated PG12, so minors may be exposed to this crap. -
