Torpedos.... Team killers favourite tool
tenacious_torps replied to Charger76's topic in General Discussion
craphappens, people make mistakes. It's a judgement call and given the limited damage potential of high tier torpedo boats there is a lot of temptation to not let a perceived opportunity pass by. Obviously players should resist that temptation nevertheless, but it would certainly also help, if the other classes occasionally thought a sec about potentially blocking a dd. You want DDs around to donate smoke, don't stretch the limits of expected selflessness. Anyway, I've yet to tk anybody at higher tiers. Just doesn't happen, because people are a lot more predictable. Completely different situation in lower tiers, the chaos results in situations where you quite simply cannot account for all possibilities. Example from just an hour ago: On Fault Line I spawned in the NE in my Karlsruhe (brilliant yolo boat, watch Flamu's vid if you haven't. The ship is actually fun and incidentally suits the new economy extremely well when played that way.), sailed down the channel at that side of the map together with a Clemson and some BB. Clemson turns into the small channel and manages to let a Kamikaze pass him without so much as a scratch on the paintwork. Survived for the moment though. Now, with a Kamikaze popping up 90° to my right and less than 2km away, of course I drop torps at him. Guns take too long, little alternative besides just sitting there and just dying meekly. He evades mine, I evade his torps, but get him with my second salvo from the other side. Had to turn right into the enemy fleet though and get quickly focused down by two cruisers and BBs each. Acceptable trade, saved the BB behind me, sunk a DD one tier higher, my tier 4 BB is now bow on to a lot of broadside targets and manages to take down two more tier 5 ships before he's done. So all in all we get out of a bad situation with a considerable plus. Well, no, because one of my torps passed the little island in the entrance of the small channel and hit our genius clemson right in the backside. Still my fault, but am I sorry for it? Certainly not, anybody with two working brain cells would have easily avoided that torp, even more, the whole situation would have been a lot different right from the start, since that Kamikaze never should have made it there in the first place. So this pink I'm not ashamed of and don't feel like I'd deserve any punishment whatsoever here. It's all in the perspective, isn't it? -
Ksielvin covered it pretty well. Some random additions on what to do when support is lacking or simply not up to it. A lot depends on topology with IJN DDs and knife-fighting. You have faster torps and usually - and this is easily forgotten - higher damage per gun salvo on top of your concealment. The gunboats wreck you with their DPM, so if you can deny them the opportunity to constantly shoot at you things start to look a lot better. Use your superior concealment to pick fights, use terrain to disengage. Sneak up on them and drop a gun salvo into an unsuspecting victim just before vanishing again behind an island. Run. If you can make them run after you around islands, drop torps in their path - without fear of retaliation, since their torps can't fly over islands - so they have to maneuver more than you, which will getting away much easier. Or getting in a position again where you can drop another full salvo on them before vanishing yet again around the corner. Depending on layout, you may want to consider staggered torp drops (e.g. with the Minekaze alternate between 2 and 1 instead of all 3, double frequency, more enforced maneuvering). Rinse, recombine elements and repeat. Keep an eye out for arriving enemy cruisers, mind their respective hydro and radar ranges and make sure at all times that your intended escape route is still valid. You do have one, do you? Single most important bit, I'd think. The ideal escape route will draw the pursuer into a position where other ships on your team will not only deal with him but also spot him. Think about what your opponent knows, maybe you can lure him around a corner behind which a cruiser shaped surprise is waiting. Open caps are worst for IJN DDs obviously, no terrain to help you out. Usually best to not enter and drop stealth torps from outside the cap. Increase distance after dropping, opposition might sail to the edge of the cap to find you. Or just let him have the cap for now, see if there's support sailing behind him. If they see their DD getting an unopposed cap they usually are unsuspecting, so there is sometimes an opportunity to get an easy kill. Put yourself in the place of the enemy DD. What is the likely course of action once he has the cap? Anticipate, get out of the way and just take the cap back. It's astonishing how rare it is for people to turn around once they've got their sights on some other objective or target. Of course, instead of all that often enough I'll just yolo in and see who's got the bigger balls. After some battles I'm usually in mindless aggression mode. So do as I say, not as I do and all that...

I'm the only one that get more credits?
tenacious_torps replied to Fino_93's topic in General Discussion
Feels like I'm earning significantly more. Not sure how consistent that is, since I decided to cave in and grind BBs, so lots of relatively low tier games, but despite running camo and prem consumables without premium account the profits were very healthy. Of course, my style was always a tad aggressive, so this seems to play right into my hand. No complaints, certainly not. Will be interesting to see how these changes play out, especially the rewards for being shot at... Less concealment builds in the near future? CE on a BB always felt somewhat wrong to me. It's your friggin job to get in harms way, that's what that big hp pool is for. Whatever, I'm beginning to enjoy myself in BBs, who'd have thunk... Full speed ahead and damn the torpedoes and that. And now it's even actually earning silver, brilliant! WG had a lot of [edited]ups, but this time they are certainly right on track imho. -
Spawn the buggers in the first line. At least make it take some more effort to crawl into a corner.
-
Citadel damage is not the problem, the high number of ships you can take it from is. Don't allow for more than a quarter of a team to be BBs - solved. If needed, increase maximum wait duration for that class too, can only help to re-balance the ecosystem.

Client doesn't properly clean up memory, the less RAM you have, the sooner it crashes. Switching between tiers and thereby maps a lot makes it even worse in my experience. Either get more RAM (which will only delay the issue) or get in the habit of regularly restarting the game after some battles. Some people reported that reinstalling the relevant runtimes also helped, might want to give that a try too.

New Japanese Destroyers - a Sneak Peek
tenacious_torps replied to voulezvous's topic in General Discussion
Plain and simple: If the changes do not change, I'll change my gaming preferences to other games from other companies. I've seen enough, this is just a way to introduce pay to win, since the only way to be safe from nerfs is to purchase premiums, so essentially you have to pay to protect your time investments. I am not having this. As it stands, the day this patch goes live is the last day of me playing WOWS. It was nice while it lasted, but the game has been in decline for quite a while now actually, at least for my preferred styles to play it. At some point it's just time to move on and that point seems to be rapidly approaching. Just glad I didn't sink to much money already, feel for others. Google "sunk cost fallacy", folks. It may help at some point, if and when you get there. Which, I suspect, might be just around the corner for other primarily DD captains just like me. Of course, maybe there'll be another half-baked 'solution', if a mayor shitstorm seems to be brewing up, but how is a sane person not going to take that with quite a lot of grains of salt even then? It's going to happen again. And again. Because the underlying reason is not changing: abysmal communication with the customer base and good old corporate greed. Since that cannot be true... what we get instead is reasoning on intended ways to play the game and neverending tinkering to force it down players' throats, because people are stupid and will flock to the game by the masses once everybody's seen the light and plays according to devs' visions. Yeah, sure... shut up and not take my money. And ban me, if you like. See, if I care. -
I think that may finally be the one patch I won't bother to install. Time to move on, if it stays like this.

If it's all about DDs, then why exactly did I cap this mode on Trident thrice now in a Kongo class BB? *g* It really depends on the map layout. With such a handy island in the middle of the inner circle like on Trident, BBs can do absolutely fine right in the middle, provided their teams understand they will profit from protecting you from DDs, because whichever side anybody else comes around the island they'll show broadside at close range to an angled BB - with very predictable results. This mode is fine, it just needs some time for people to wrap their heads around how to play it. I don't claim it happens every time, nor even regularly, but when you get a good team and this mode: tremendous fun. And lots and lots of citadels as a reward for BB bravery. Ah well, or maybe mindless aggression, but wtf that's how I like it.

IJN Destroyer line changes and compensation.
tenacious_torps replied to Rianabi's topic in General Discussion
That's why I said " they claimed". Didn't buy it neither. I dare to say that an intended gold grab was called back last minute and then they had to work around the fallout somehow with little time to do it. The revamp you mentioned affected absolutely all captains, which wasn't the case this time. Just ppl who took SA for their first skill. Maybe a bit more complicated technically, I've really no idea how the database is organized. Could be a question of just some simple SQL commands, but also some contracted nightmare. Anyway, even that doesn't leave us with "technically not possible", just with "too much bother". -
I guess WG would like to see more AS spec'ed CVs, which may have become a bit more viable in XP terms. Countering aircraft is a strong flavor through all of the US lines, so it's makes a modicum of sense. Not that it'd fix CV gameplay... that's just broken anyway.

I was hoping for some fix with regards to the horrible MM for tiers 5 and 6. How is it going to help new players, when they're somewhat protected until tier 4 and then dumped in head first? It's not unlikely to end up for half a dozen matches in a row in tier 7 battles and there are a lot of ships at tier 5 that will struggle badly, especially in the current BB heavy meta. Just imagine half a dozen games in the Omaha with Colorados, Nagatos, Gneisenaus citadelling you from every angle. I can easily see lots of players just leaving at that point. I think it's worst for cruisers, BBs and DDs can cope better usually. Not really sure how to fix this though. Extending preferred MM to tier 5 or 6 will just push the problem up to tier 7. Maybe still preferable though, at that point players should have picked up some skills and by and large be better prepared. To make the grind there more bearable a reduction in XP costs for getting to tier 8 would probably go a long way. Just a thought, I really don't see how this is working as intended atm.

IJN Destroyer line changes and compensation.
tenacious_torps replied to Rianabi's topic in General Discussion
They claimed that wasn't possible technically, when they gave every ship situational awareness and instead lowered gold costs for retraining and gave everybody 100 gold. After a mayor shitstorm appeared on the horizon, obviously. They'll screw this up, if experience is anything to go by. -
Since I managed to kill the friendly DD I was trying to protect and his attacker in one salvo once, the dispersion has become a bit of a thing for me... *g* Tends to stick in the mind, thing like that.
-
Will give it a try, certainly would make things a lot more enjoyable if that were true Edit some days later: Nope, doesn't seem to affect the frequency of memory errors for me. On the other hand no black screens neither, so might as well turn it on anyway.

Something needs to be done to help BB's from smoke hiding, spamming DD's.
tenacious_torps replied to _x_Acheron_x_'s topic in Archive
We could get rid of one of the more rarely used f-keys for BBs and replace it with "whine, whine, whine" that also rage-quits the game in one go. -
Try changing to WINE 1.9.18 and configure it to emulate Windows 10. Fixed it for me. Virtual Memory has nothing to do with it, it's just sloppy programming that tends to show up more easily in WINE. If you need help on how to do the above: - click configure - on the first tab that show up there's the WINE version. You can add others and use those for any specific app or game installed with playonlinux. If not present in your list, click on the + to download and install 1.9.18 - once that is done, switch to the second tab ("WINE"), click configure WINE and in the app, that pops up now, change from Windows 7 to Windows 10. - for reasons not entirely clear I had to restart my computer before it finally worked. hth

Just better dispersion might be enough to get things balanced again, but as it is I agree: the Ishizuchi is barely usable at best in the current meta. Dispersion imho would suit the intended role of cruiser hunter better than more range, which might turn her into yet another ship spamming HE at BBs mainly.

Game doesn't even launch anymore, quits with "Allocate: can't allocate 4294967925 bytes"
-
The client seems to have memory issues, that get worse the more matches you have played. Basically not all used RAM is freed properly after the match. Not matter how much RAM you have, at some point you will run into this and your computer starts to swap - that is use the swap file on your hdd as a substitute for RAM. Obviously at that point your FPS will drop considerably, lag can be another result. Does that fit the bill? Does the problem occur only after some matches and never in the first few played? Restarting the game ahead of time will prevent that. Not exactly elegant, but as a workaround it's probably less annoying than matches lost to suddenly looking at a slideshow.

Game seems to be full of idiots spouting racial insults atm. Wargaming must do something about it. It's not optional, a lot of what I have seen today actually constitutes criminal offences in Germany and if they don't act and act fast, there will be legal trouble in one of their biggest markets. Aiding and abetting isn't a viable route of commerce, for starters. People will report to authorities, I know I will if nothing is done about it. This is not acceptable. [edited]
-
Seems worse at lower tiers, yes. Anyway, if you see it happen use report and encourage others to do the same.
-
Slightly annoying? Feels more like a legitimate reason to be absolutely p.o.ed. Frankly, if wargaming really does that, I'll be sailing different seas from that day on. Just happy I didn't already sink that much money on this game really, because this time I just might have had it once and for all. It's tantamount to extorting doubloons from players, plain and simple, and the cheek of presenting this as, I quote, "intended to make the gameplay more enjoyable" isn't helping neither. Fully expecting a ban here, couldn't care less at this point.

Da da Spiel nun für MAC erhältlich ist
tenacious_torps replied to totosniperofhell's topic in Feedback Archiv
0.5.7 macht bisher keine Probleme, abgesehen davon, dass die out of memory crashes schneller auftreten.
