What is the stupidest thing you did today?

This morning I wanted another anniversary container while the weekend event lasted, and played a couple scenarios. Kindest thing I can say about my teams is they were... special. In my first game, two of our ships - Fuso and Duca d'Aosta - thought the best place to be was the repair area, despite having received no damage. The rest of the team tried to stop the enemy waves from the front, as they should, but they were undermanned and overrun because of the campers. Even I was closer to the enemy than them, and I was in a carrier. Ultimately, the campers were the only ones left, and they of course got overrun. Last I saw of the Duca d'Aosta was him charging a battleship to fire his torpedoes at point blank range, which he missed. In the second game, I was in another carrier. I sent my planes out to attack the second wave as soon as it spawned, since I knew attacking the first would be a waste of my time. Except that the remaining six ships on my team, three battleships and three cruisers, were incapable of sinking four low tier enemy cruisers. We ended up facing the second and third waves and the main attack all at once. My team dropped off like flies. I saw our Fuso screaming for help, surrounded by a dozen or so ships and receiving fire from all sides, and calling me a loser when he died. I wonder, what did he expect me to do? Best part is, apparently those idiots blamed me. Received three reports for those games, and I did not even rage in chat about any of it. I did not try to get the second container.

    Operation Narai

It seems Narai is suffering from some horrendous bug. I've tried it five times, crashed four times, and the only reason I did not crash five times was because the entire team died before reaching that point. Oddly, when I tried to restart the game and come back, twice I saw that nearly my entire team had dropped dead around the same time. As if they had also crashed at the same time I did. Has this been happening to anyone else? Even more oddly, despite these troubles, I've had two five star wins and had more than five kills both times. Narai challenge completed. Still crashed, still died, but it happened so late that it made no difference.

    Mac OS wrapper and WOWS

I drifted away from this game back in March, the French event was way too much work and not enough game. Came back a couple days ago, and already regret it. For practical purposes, this game has no Mac client. The thing they offer for download has more in common with a psychological torture device. You'd think that after two years they could at least offer a client that was stable, but no... crashes all the time.

What are you going to do about karma?

Karma has existed in the game for nearly two years now, and it does not seem to serve any positive purpose. Most players ignore it and don't bother to give out compliments. Many fools, griefers and trolls however abuse the report function constantly. Angry enemies frequently report you for sinking them, while your own team can report you for the most absurd and minor reasons, with no regard to whether they are fair. You can carry a game and get reported by an angry ally who thinks you did not support them enough. You can be losing a game despite doing your best and get reported by dead allies who did not achieve anything, yet blame the living players for the loss. You can get reported for living, dying, kill stealing, colliding, not using camo, playing a stock ship, playing a carrier with strike loadout, playing a carrier in the first place... the list goes on. The karma system is fundamentally broken and abused. Are you ever going to do something to change that? And if you can't, why don't you get rid of it completely? Because as it is, it only serves to annoy players who have done nothing wrong, and we would be better off without it. My recommendation would be to scrap karma, and to also remove the possibility to report players for being AFK. Often they are AFK because of technical issues that are not their fault, and there is another system in place that penalizes being AFK. There is no need for a double punishment.

    About to win a game

Nearly lost a game today when two of our battleships abandoned our base to be capped by a badly damaged Belfast. Everyone was telling them to turn around and go defend, but no... they just had to go stat padding on enemy battleships across the map. We only won because a near dead Yorck sacrificed himself for a cap reset, and an Akatsuki delayed the Belfast long enough for the battleships to cap.
  6. I don't usually post here, since forgetting this kind of games is best for my sanity, but this was just too delicious not to share. Our only DD went for B, I went to support him in my cruiser, entire rest of the team would rather camp behind C. They never capped C.

Best Skill Pick at Level 2 for CV

I have never used those setups without torpedo bombers, so the rework changed nothing for me about the skills. Just having torpedoes does not mean Torpedo Acceleration would be useful, and I cannot think of any way it would be beneficial on the Independence, Ranger, Lexington or Essex, either before or after the rework.

Best Skill Pick at Level 2 for CV

Is it really? I remember asking this same question a few months back, and the conclusion I reached was that it depends on the carrier. On Japanese carriers I agree that Torpedo Acceleration is the best choice for all ships. One reason for this is that in the Japanese drop pattern the torpedoes converge, so even though you need to manually drop your torpedoes slightly farther away, which negates the speed advantage, the torpedoes will be closer together when they reach their target. As for automatic drops, all Japanese carriers have two or more torpedo squadrons, enabling you to cross drop torpedoes on enemy destroyers, which is the only purpose you should use automatic drops for anyway. Torpedo Acceleration will provide a speed boost with automatic drops, which leaves your target less time to react and will make those cross drops more effective. On the other hand, Expert Rear Gunner is not very useful for Japanese carriers. Yes, you can occasionally shoot down catapult fighters which is nice, but Japanese carriers have more squadrons than Americans do, so they are not as dependent on each squadron to do damage. The squadrons are also smaller, so their likelihood of shooting an enemy fighter down is smaller to begin with. On American carriers things are different. Their torpedoes diverge, so having to drop them farther away is in fact harmful. Most American carriers also have only one torpedo squadron, which means no cross dropping, so you should have no need for automatic drops. Midway and the premium carriers are exceptions to this. Expert Rear Gunner is more useful to Americans than to the Japanese. Americans have fewer squadrons, so when you succeed in shooting down a catapult fighter and do full damage to your target, the benefit is more significant. Also, American squadrons are larger, which means the likelihood of this happening is higher in the first place. My recommendation is to use Torpedo Acceleration on all Japanese carriers, Langley, Bogue, Midway, Saipan and Enterprise. Expert Rear Gunner is better on Independence, Ranger, Lexington and Essex. I actually used dive bombers to set myself on fire in the Halloween event. It did not make a huge difference, but every bit to reduce the turnaround time helped.

    Why didn't we win?

Let me guess - the three of you were in the exit area before the seventh member of your team died. That has happened to me before. If the number of ships required is reduced due to team member dying, and the new number of ships required is already at the exit, the game might not register it. You can fix this by sailing out of the exit and back in. Provided you have more than 1 second to do it, of course. That particular operation seems to be really buggy. I have twice earned a Will to Win achievement there, but did not get them. Reported the bug, and support of course did not even take it seriously.

    Joke level pro...

Don't know if this is relevant, but I once had a problem binding my phone to my account, because the text messages never arrived. The fault was entirely mine though. Years ago, I had signed up for a multi SIM service, which meant I was provided with two identical SIM cards. One was intended for my phone, the other for a portable Internet device. However, it turned out I could not receive text messages. Eventually I learned that the SIM cards were not completely identical - the one exception was that only one of them received text messages, and I had mixed them up at some point. It took me ages to figure this one out.

How to handle people like this?

I frankly find it disturbing how some people don't think technical issues are a valid reason for being absent from a game. Those issues are often impossible to predict, prepare for or prevent - is this so difficult to understand? Fortunately, such opinions are mostly irrelevant, because it is Wargaming who decides what their requirements are. I play this game on a Mac that satisfies the recommended requirements and exceeds the minimum ones. It is not new, but it is well maintained. It is not like I'm trying to play on an outdated virus infestation with rusty barbed wire shoved into the network port. As far as I'm concerned, I have done everything I can to make this game work. No one can reasonably expect me to do more, and certainly no one has any right to demand me to do more. To put this into perspective, how would you feel if Wargaming released an update containing a critical bug causing people to crash out of games, and those people were then given bans? It could have happened to you. Given enough time, it WILL happen to you, if such a system is implemented. Oh, on the subject of paying for a new computer or operating system, beyond pointing out how absurd that would be just to play one free-to-play online game, let me tell you a story. I used to have a separate partition on this computer with Windows installed, which I used for some old PC games, and this game. Everything was fine for about a month, and then I had my first fatal crash. Recovery failed, and I had to reformat and reinstall everything from scratch. Then it happened again. And again. And again and again until I lost count. The final straw was when Windows broke down an hour after fresh installation, and I gave up and returned to the Mac side. Soon after that broke too. Only then I realized I had a worse problem than Windows being Windows, and took my computer to the shop for repairs. It turned out my hard drive was irreparably damaged and had to be replaced. Fortunately I had an up to date backup of the contents. I still don't know whether having two partitions contributed to the damage, but I'm not enthusiastic about going through that ordeal again. I would like a response to this, too.

How to handle people like this?

I'm one of those people, and the reason I don't fix the problem is because I can't. I play on Mac, and the Mac client is simply broken. I can play with minimal graphics settings on a computer that should be capable of far better, and I get crashes every few games. I often arrive in games two or three minutes late, because it takes that long to force quit and restart the client and to get back in. Back on subject, I have a similar story to share. Some months ago I ran into a Warspite player who announced at the start of the match that she won't play against tier 8. She however did not go afk - what she did was arguably worse. She just sat at her spawn, without firing or moving, and spent the entire game insulting her team. She cheered at the deaths of our "camping" battleships who died on the front line. The only time she ever moved was to reverse into cover behind an island, so she would not tank any damage for any allies actually fighting. When we predictably lost the game, she blamed her team for being "losers". I have never met anyone so completely lacking any sense of irony. I believe in that game I initially tried to encourage her to play, since I was in a tier 6 ship myself. By the end of the battle however I was so sick of her that I encouraged everyone to report her. I hope they did, because she retaliated by reporting me. Now, what should I have done? Note that since she was not afk, reporting her for that was not an option. I also remember her having an exceptionally low win rate, indicating she was a repeat offender.
  13. If the number of plane kills looks odd, it is because they are all catapult fighters. The enemy CV suffered a disconnect right after start, and I quickly took advantage and sank him. After that I owned the sky, and ended up breaking my old damage record.

Show us your 1 million XP ships.

I'm past the 1 million mark on the Minekaze and Nicholas. Their captains have also earned nearly all of their experience on those ships. They served briefly on rentals during Clan Battles, and my Minekaze captain sailed a couple other destroyers after the second Japanese DD branch was added.

    the "carry harder!" thread

No screenshot, but I had a game today in the Akizuki. Three caps, two kills, 144k damage done... in Ranked. With my first two torpedo salvos I wrecked one enemy battleship, one cruiser, and the only enemy destroyer. I capped both areas, one of them twice after my team lost it. And somehow this was not enough to win. To top it all off, I was reported for that game, and I suspect it was by my own team. I would very much like to know how much harder they expected me to carry.

Restrict Purchase of Premiums to Researched Tier

Today I had the misfortune of having in my team in Ranked a player with an average tier below 5. His only contribution to the match was torpedoing and sinking my Akizuki, earning himself an instant penalty, proving he was a regular offender. He was pretty much the poster boy for why low tier players should not buy high tier premiums, and certainly not play them in Ranked. However, this restriction would not have stopped him, because he had researched French cruisers up to tier 9. Somehow. His profile did not show nearly enough games of any type to explain where he got the experience points.

    A new level of ABYSMAL...

Challenge accepted. I had this game a few days ago on the Shards map. You know the one, where the north team gets superior cover at C cap and the south team at A cap, so that the strategy could not be more obvious. So, what happens? I dare you to show me a worse team on this map. Or any map really.
  18. You are not making much sense here. While I might not want another event like this any time soon, I still have an incentive to get the ships from this event for potential use in a future event, because that future event will not be this one. I don't know when or if any of my ships might be of use to complete an event, or what that event might be, but the potential is there. I don't see why you would base your expectations for future events on this one either, because most of them have been far less intensive. Most events have been relatively minor and easy to complete through normal play. Since I already mentioned I grinded Pan-Asian DDs just in case I might need them later and the bonuses made it easy, let us consider what they might be useful for. If you look at past major events, such as Hunt for Bismarck, Dunkirk, and now Battle of the North Cape, they were all based on historical battles. We got tasks like scoring 11 torpedo hits with British ships because in the actual battle the Scharnhorst was torpedoed 11 times. But the one thing that stands out about Pan-Asian DDs is that they don't have that kind of history, which is a significant factor for my lack of interest in them in the first place. We are never going to have a major event like this where Pan-Asian DDs would be featured. We did however have the 2nd Anniversary event, which included many tasks involving ships and ship lines introduced that year. I find it very likely that the 3rd Anniversary will have similar tasks, and if it does, I will be happy to have a tier VI Fushun with premium camo and 10 point captain ready for action. In short, even if events like this are too exhausting to participate in, there are plenty of minor events to look forward to which can be completed with minimal effort, and which provide an incentive to get ships for them. Besides, even if you did not care about any of the reward ships from this event, the free port slots they come with are a major boon. I am definitely going to have a use for those.
  19. This is simply not true. It might not be for everyone, but for some players the potential use in an event is enough incentive to grind a ship line. Personally, I had zero interest in the Pan-Asian DDs, but since I could get a large chunk of commander experience and I might need a trained captain later, I played them anyway up to tier 5. Now I have the tier 6 from this event, and I plan to play her enough to retrain my captain and unlock all upgrades. Again, this is not true. Earlier in this event there was a task to spot a British ship in a German one, and I grinded the German DD line just for that, though I was planning on doing it later anyway. With the triple experience for first win it did not take very long to reach tier 5, and I had the ship ready by the time the task in question was unlocked. I should point out though that these campaigns have been exhausting. I completed them both with honors yesterday, and after my premium time runs out tomorrow I plan to take a break. I am going to need it.
  20. Ran into @El2aZeR in his Essex in my Taiho. Best I can say for myself is that I did not give up, and he did not stop all of my strikes, but it was not an even match. He was not the only carrier unicum I ran into last night, and I was able to match the next one. Perhaps there is hope for me becoming a better CV captain yet.

    the "carry harder!" thread

This was how I completed mission four in the New Year Raid campaign. At the end only myself and an Emile Bertin remained on my team against an enemy Emile Bertin, Gallant and Bogue. I made the mistake of trusting our Emile to handle the enemy Emile and Gallant while I sank the Bogue. I needed that kill for the High Caliber, otherwise I may have turned back to help. As if you needed proof that these events cause you to make stupid decisions. In my defense, I had every reason to expect our Emile could handle the other enemies. He had most of his HP intact, while the enemy Emile was down to 1500 HP. The enemy Gallant was near full HP, but it was also spotted by aircraft from our sunk carrier. I have no idea how he managed to get sunk while failing to even finish off the enemy Emile.
  22. I considered that, but my tier 8 battleships have no trained captains at the moment, and I was never very good with them anyway. But, I need not have worried. It only took me nine tries in the Bayern to complete this task, although the game was a loss. Maybe I was lucky, or I'm better with low tier battleships than I gave myself credit for. Now, completing both campaigns with honors is pretty much a given.
  23. Finished the first campaign yesterday, and now I'm only a couple tasks short of completing it with honors. I found the 90k damage in DD task surprisingly easy. I did it once in the Shinonome, then again in the Minekaze while getting my daily win. The task that took me longest was 11 torpedo hits which I did in the Fiji, but even that was not too bad. The only task that worries me is getting High Caliber in BB. I've done it before of course several times, but I can't exactly guarantee that I'm going to have such a good game before the event ends. I can finish the second campaign without it of course, but I would like to get all tasks if possible.
  24. This game was a parade of battleships lining up to be torpedoed. The only real excitement was provided by an enemy DD who slipped into our base and tried to cap while most of us were too far away. He was interrupted by one of our battleships and sunk by me for the Kraken. Enemy CV provided me with my last kill, Confederate and High Caliber.

    Battle of North Cape

Finally managed to get three main gun incapacitations in the Bayern, after many tries in it and the Queen Elizabeth. I only needed to sink an enemy DD at 4km range and get into a close range brawl with a Gneisenau, in which I kept aiming for his turrets. Did some damage too, but I could have done more if I'd aimed for his superstructure. This task was a pain to complete. Yeah, I could have received six stars long before this, had three dreadnoughts already yesterday, but I am trying to complete all the tasks I can. Now I just need the High Caliber. Already got one before, but of course I had different tasks selected then. That I believe will be a job for the Minekaze.
