Since tech tree premiums are currently discounted, I was thinking of buying something, so I'm looking for player opinions. Is the Sims worth it? What I'm looking for are crew trainers for my American DDs and German BBs/CAs. I've had my eye on Scharnhorst for a long time, and even though the Prinz looks like it could work fine as a trainer, I may just get it anyway. What I have doubts about is the Sims. Yes, I could use her in the Dunkirk operation to grind ad nauseam, but I'd prefer something that can work in randoms too, and Sims is at the most awkward tier for DDs, with the highest detection range without access to the concealment module. Also, with the CV rework looming, who knows what happens to the currently great AA Sims has? I would hate to spend my doubloons on a one trick pony only to have that one trick nerfed to insignificance. The ship I would rather get is the Monaghan. One tier lower, so she has better matchmaking, option of different playstyles, what is not to like? Except she is only available through the premium shop. With luck she might become available through the tech tree or arsenal some day, but there are no guarantees. Thoughts? Is the Sims worth getting, or should I save my doubloons for something else?

Yeah, that was it. I had read about it, but could not remember the name of the ship.

What Were Your Greatest Gaming Achievements Today ?
Rosletyne replied to Hanszeehock's topic in General Discussion
This was some days ago, but still worth posting: The most remarkable part is I did most of that damage at range. I was outnumbered on my flank, so I could not get close, but broadsiding cruisers just gifted me citadels. Who says German BB guns are inaccurate? This was probably the best game I ever had in Gneisenau. Another achievement, which I'm unlikely to ever repeat, is yesterday I researched, bought and upgraded four new ships: Shimakaze, Gearing, Yamato and Montana. Four tier X ships in one day. My destroyers had been close for a long time, and the upgrade discount finally gave me reason to finish the grind. My battleships were farther away, but with the triple experience bonus for first win, I finished them too just in time. This was in addition to Kitakaze, Seattle, Admiral Hipper and Edinburgh, all of which I also researched over Christmas. -
FTFY. Neither is it your business to get offended because we're bored of his pointless whining. And it was already pointed out to you that he is obviously not complaining about the NEW carriers. He is whining about the OLD ones. Get it now, or do I have to draw a picture?
-
You usually notice that when battleships get very close, such as when one tries to ram the other, it becomes impossible to aim at the waterline or even the side armor. Listing would have interesting effects on aiming. On one side you would lose gun elevation and range, and gain both on the other. I remember allied battleships deliberately flooding part of the ship to increase their elevation so they could provide fire support farther inland at Normandy.

Thanks for the comments, everyone. I have now made my decision, and it is to skip the Sims for now. I may get her later, but meanwhile I discovered something more worthwhile to do with my doubloons - I invested them in permanent camos for odd tiered CVs, which are also discounted right now. If and when they are refunded when the rework goes live, I should have enough doubloons for not just the Sims, but something else too. Lo and behold, I found something positive about the rework! Who could have guessed? I did get the Scharnhorst, and bought some port slots with what I had left. This was really the core of my issue with the Sims. I have seen it in action in Dunkirk, and I know how effective it is there, but ultimately I would want a ship I enjoyed playing instead of just grinding one operation. I mostly play solo. Another advantage the Monaghan would have is that it has access to tier 6 operations, and I do play destroyers in them too. But as I said, I'm not getting either right now. I forgot about the Prinz Eugen too. I was referring to Prinz Eitel Friedrich, which could have been a viable alternative to Scharnhorst as a trainer, but I've wanted Scharnhorst too long to pass it up. Plus, Scharnhorst actually existed.

Are those players real ?! (WARNING : bad language ahead)
Rosletyne replied to DarkSorr0w's topic in General Discussion
How do you deal with bad players on your team? You ignore them and hope they are on the enemy team next time you meet them. No matter how bad someone is at the game, no matter how frustrating it is to have them on your team, you just have to accept it. Nowadays I rarely even report them, unless they do something extraordinary - such as the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau I saw in an operation a couple days back, who ignored my warnings of an enemy Clemson, who both got themselves torpedoed by him, and who did not even manage to sink him. The only players I can't tolerate are malicious rather than incompetent. Like a certain Warspite I saw long ago who announced she refused to play because she was bottom tier, and who only moved from spawn to reverse behind an island out of enemy fire. As bad as that was, the moment she earned a lasting place in my memory was when she blamed her team for being bad, for not being able to carry her useless [edited]. As annoying as it is to have a battleship sniping from the back, or a cruiser trying to launch 6km torpedoes at targets 12km away through team mates, they are at least trying. They are doing their best, however little that may be. And maybe, if they do it long enough, even they might figure out what they're doing wrong and get better. -
Operation Frontier - Why do people find it so hard?
Rosletyne replied to IanH755's topic in General Discussion
Why so much hate for average players? This operation makes fools out of everyone. Yesterday I played some operations, trying to take advantage of the huge first win bonus. After several tries, I had to give up on getting a win in my Gneisenau. And as it happens, in two of those lost games I ran into the same Flint player. In both games he charged at the enemy destroyers. In both games, he was the first to die. In both games, he blamed someone else for "killing him and losing the game". And get this. He was a super unicum with a 85% recent win rate! Apparently he thought he was too good to be killed by bot battleships, so he just kept trying and kept being killed by them. Another game, another Flint player, and me in the King George V. The first thing this Flint does is tell his team where he intends to lay smoke, so the other cruisers can take advantage of it. He then sinks one of the DDs while staying at range and proceeds to wreck the BB squadron with HE spam. We won with five stars, and we made it look easy. And this Flint, who was an invaluable asset to the team, only had a 49% win rate. Pride goeth before the fall. I would rather have an average, supportive, humble potato on my team over an arrogant, abusive, reckless rock star. -

What Were Your Greatest Gaming Achievements Today ?
Rosletyne replied to Hanszeehock's topic in General Discussion
I disagree. If you for example sink an enemy battleship with less than 1000 HP, damage control on cooldown and burning in two places, while another enemy nearby still has most of their HP intact, you were absolutely kill stealing. My best achievement tonight: This was the first Torpedoman achievement I've had since tier 5 was excluded from operations. With the Minekaze you could farm those achievements easily, thanks to its quick reload. With Fubuki, not so much. -
Holy crap. I met that guy too. No, you would not. Take my word for it. I saw that very same player tonight in my Minekaze. He was in the Shenyang. Immediately after the match started I saw him turn around and sail next to one of our battleships. I was sure he was going to team kill him, and I believe the only reason he did not was because he would not have survived the reflected damage. Yes, he was already pink, because of course he was. He spent most of the game hiding behind battleships and spamming the thank you chat command over and over. He kept doing it until I sailed to him, and fired my guns at him. That finally shut him up. Instead he began shooting at me, and did not stop until he had reduced himself to half health. He spent the end of the game parked on the border, until he was sunk by an enemy Podvoisky, which he of course tried to torpedo. The game was lost. Now, I'm not proud of having shot at him. However, I believe it has been more than a year since the last time I intentionally fired at an ally. This guy made me snap. He was just that annoying. I looked at his stats after the game, and they were so abysmal that I suspect he is a griefer. Seeing this thread has only made me more certain. He might have a separate main account he plays on, and probably sucks if his attempt to torpedo a destroyer with deepwater torpedoes is any indication, and when he gets the urge he uses his troll account to ruin games. This might not even be his first troll account. I say he deserves no leniency, he is clearly a repeat offender. Ban him, and any alt accounts he has, permanently. I can provide the replay of the game where I encountered him, if you want to report him to moderators. Further evidence against him might result in more dire consequences for him, and the sooner he gets banned the better. You should still hide his name from that screenshot, because naming and shaming is against forum rules. That is also why I did not name him in this post.

I don't use Radio Location on any of my ships. While it does give you significant benefits, it is also the only skill in the game that benefits the enemy, and it can be used against you. What I mean by that is that you are told when you are located. If you note the positions of your allies, especially when the ship being located changes, that can give you a very good idea where the ship using Radio Location is. In practice, being told I was located has saved me from torpedo salvos and enabled me to turn my guns toward the enemy before spotting him. Of course most players don't understand how to do this, but good players can turn your own Radio Location against you.

What are you the most unsatisfied with?

I would say provide an actual Mac client, but who am I kidding, there are not enough Mac players for WG to care. Of course that might be because the current wrapper runs like an alpha test. I'll say provide a 64 bit client instead. That might help with the memory issues on Mac too. -
Discussion thread for "some interesting info around the world"
Rosletyne replied to Deamon93's topic in General Discussion
Of course it is a work of fiction of some sort, but I have no idea what exactly. Background material for a role-playing game? Still ridiculous that it would be one of the top results when searching for Russian battleships. My favorite bit was the one about Andrei Pervozvanny class pre-dreadnoughts being reconstructed into super-dreadnoughts and still being in service today. -
The Imperial German naval flag, does it have a place in WoWS?
Rosletyne replied to MrFingers's topic in General Discussion
I did not know this, but I always thought the placement of some flags was weird. Many are located downwind or directly above the smokestacks, where the smoke would prevent them from being recognized and quickly color them black, defeating the whole reason for having them.- 288 replies

Discussion thread for "some interesting info around the world"
Rosletyne replied to Deamon93's topic in General Discussion
I can honestly say that the Russian BB line is the one I'm least interested in since the introduction of the Pan-Asian destroyers. My main reason for playing this game is the history of the ships, and while the Pan-Asian ships have no history to speak of, most of them at least existed, while the Russian battleships are the greatest work of fiction since vows of fidelity were included in the French wedding ceremony. I'm surprised not to see the Imperatritsa Mariya in the line, but I guess the Russians have so many paper projects to choose from they could afford to leave out one of only two real ship classes. The very idea that the Russian BBs would have good armor is preposterous. Many of the ship designs are in fact battlecruisers, and as such should not have heavy armor, and the Soviet steel industry was in fact incapable of producing armor plates of sufficient thickness and their attempts to compensate for this mostly resulted in them being rejected. What these ships should be is glass cannons. Sure they can be big and have large health pools, but they should really need it. Interestingly, when I tried to search for information on the project 24 battleships, one of the top results was a highly dubious wiki page, which not only claimed they were actually built but that the K-1000 hoax was real as well. Is this what they teach in Russian schools nowadays? I feel like we're being subjected to propaganda here. -
Nice shots, but I've seen better. Long ago on Two Brothers I saw an enemy BB blind fire over the islands and sink a cruiser outright with two or three citadels. We were so shocked we thought someone had team killed him.

Whats wrong and what am I missing(Natural selection)
Rosletyne replied to Latitude1980's topic in General Discussion
This is correct. Note though that the eight kills don't need to be of the same type, and any combination of destroyers, battleships or carriers would do the trick - except of course there are none of the latter two in Cherry Blossom. Another achievement that has confused me in the past is Will to Win. It is not enough to be the last one alive and win with at least one secondary objective completed. You must have completed that secondary objective alone while you were the only one left, any objectives completed before do not count. -
Salty kids reporting for no reason
Rosletyne replied to Captain_Newman's topic in General Discussion
Possibly the dumbest reason I have ever been reported was by an Omaha, after he was first torpedoed and then gunned down by a smoked up enemy Nicholas, for being a "useless CV". After all, I had only just spotted the Nicholas, shot down the enemy attack planes nearby and sunk the enemy carrier, with my fighters circling directly above the Omaha. There was another allied CV in the game who had also done well, and whose fighters were also above the Omaha, and he was not spared either. I guess we should have reached through his monitor, pushed him away from his computer, seized control of his ship and avoided the obvious ambush for him. -
Which forum members have you seen in random battles?
Rosletyne replied to Cobra6's topic in General Discussion
Ran into @El2aZeR today on my team, in a game neither of us will care to remember. I had the misfortune of having a Gearing on my flank who was determined to stay farther from the action than a friendly Conqueror. El2aZeR was in another Gearing, having problems of his own. Long story short, our team was completely crushed. -

This was my first Major Contribution in anything other than a carrier. The game was extremely close too. I was the last one left alive against three battleships. I scored five citadels with a single point blank salvo on the Izumo, then sank him with my next one. The reinforcements ultimately arrived a couple seconds before one of the remaining battleships rammed me, while the last support ship was on fire with about 2k HP left. -
The Imperial German naval flag, does it have a place in WoWS?
Rosletyne replied to MrFingers's topic in General Discussion
All three? I'm only aware of two. Where is the third one used? My take on this issue is that the double standard is annoying, and so is the inconsistency. Remember how the Hiryu used to have the hinomaru on its flight deck? It was removed for some vague reasons about it being offensive and interfering with ship camouflage. And then we got the Kaga, with the hinomaru. Guess none of those reasons for removing it from Hiryu mattered after all. I guess there is still the matter of it only being used on the Hiryu for a short time, however that time included the most iconic moment of her career. I would prefer to have the proper Imperial German and Japanese naval ensigns in the game. I see no reason why the former should be offensive to anyone, and if the latter is offensive to the Chinese, so what? They have their own version of the game anyway with made up fantasy nations. I don't care so much about the swastika, since that symbol is considered pretty much universally offensive now. I could tolerate it though, just like I can tolerate the hammer and sickle. I don't have to like it though, and that flag is part of why the Russian tech tree is the only one I have never touched.- 288 replies

They have already done this, and will probably continue doing it. Those old ship lines are no longer using their original models. If you search through old updates, you will find several upgrades.

I have played this operation a lot this week, and while I have no numbers to back me up, it does feel harder than I remember it being. I can think of two reasons why it might be so. First, the cruiser Romeo is less useful than the carrier Romeo was, and it can leave the repair area to do something stupid and get itself killed, while the carrier always had the sense to stay put. Second, it has been a long time since this was the scenario of the week, what with five weeks of Halloween madness, and many people may have forgotten how it works and how to play it. As for the issue of DDs in operations, I have to agree that DDs are the worst class of ship to play. And I say this despite mainly playing DDs myself, and my best game this week in this operation was in the Farragut, with 8 kills and over 2000 base experience. But on average I still get better results in cruisers. I would still not restrict the number of DDs allowed in the team, at least not any lower than two. If you play them right they can be glorious, and I don't approve of unnecessary restrictions. I did not like tier 5 ships being banned from operations either. I used to farm Torpedoman achievements with my Minekaze in Aegis and perform feats I can only dream of in tier 6 DDs. Sometimes it feels like the hatred for DDs in operations borders on excessive. I once ran into a cruiser player in Raptor Rescue who immediately quit the game after seeing three DDs on the team. Afterwards he insisted on blaming the DDs for throwing the game, all of whom did their best, while accepting no blame himself for being a quitter. DDs are more useful in some operations than in others, obviously. In fact, I think this operation is one of the better ones for DDs. Contrary to popular belief, you can score devastating torpedo strikes on enemy ships here. Since they all charge straight for the port area they are predictable, and they are not nearly as good at dodging torpedoes as in some other operations. In Raptor Rescue ships react to torpedoes long before they should be able to see them, but DDs can be invaluable at dealing with enemy DDs. In Killer Whale you could bring a British DD to hit the nose of the stationary König, but you might as well bring a Leander for that with more utility. This is in fact incorrect. That Zuiho did not count for that objective. I have no idea why not, but I know I have had five star wins where the Zuiho survived the game. Actually you can do it. In this operation the enemies are not as clairvoyant as in others. I think the trick is that the enemies may not see you when you fire the torpedoes, which is easy enough with the island cover available, and they must not see the torpedoes on the way. And of course, you have to launch them at their broadside, not their bow. One more tip I have is that all of the Japanese cruisers have the AA fire consumable, but none of the Germans do. Therefore, Japanese cruisers cannot use hydro to detect torpedoes, but the Germans might.

I think I might have earned the old Major Contribution achievement with this game. Only got two stars, but that was some real heavy lifting I had to do.
