    The CV Captains Cabin

Good job! Lex is fun, still holds my highest average damage and all-time damage record.
  2. I believe the Russian word "linkor" refers unambiguously to battleships (BBs) as we understand them not warships in general.

Atago: 42 Mikhail Kutuzov: 50+1= 51 Tirpitz: 6-3= 3 Surprise, surprise, the top 3 are premiums.
  4. I would be perfectly happy for BBs to be sinking each-other more. I actually wish they implemented the reduction to bow armour on BBs. That way they could not angle to deny all damage, only reduce some, and BBs could always target other BBs. And they would need to keep moving which will make it more likely that they will make positioning mistakes that leave other weaknesses. The whole "bow tanking" thing is the biggest BS in this game in my opinion. Angling is realistic up to a point, but the hull is not armour, and the front bulkhead on most BBs is weaker than the belt.
  5. To those saying RNG works both ways and less RNG would result in better skill by dodging and fewer random hits on cruisers, you are engaging in some very fanciful thinking based on a wonky (or biased) view of the statistics. The number of times you got screwed by a "random" citadel when you otherwise dodged "perfectly" is miniscule compared to the number of times someone with half-good aim will delete you without you being able to do a single thing about it if BB dispersion was better. Dispersion is a minor nuisance for a half-decent BB player, and overall BBs easily top the damage charts in spite of it. People who go around preaching that BBs depend completely on RNG are either deluded by their confirmation bias or actively trying to mislead.

  7. Meh, obvious cop-out because it's impossible to police. I never understood why WG even allow any mods at all. They should completely lock down the game files, pay some of the modders and implement the best and most wanted features into the game (which they are slowly doing anyway) and be done with it. They would also make a fortune selling cheap camos if visual modding was banned. Completely illogical business decision to have a client-side moddable game.
  8. Thing is, most normal people have heard of some BB classes and know that BBs were the biggest and baddest things afloat. The problem with balancing classes unrealistically in the game is people are quick to spot BBs being weaker than they "should" be and complain. Call them BBabies all you like, but it's clear they make up a pretty big chunk of the player base, fan base, and probably income base as well. It would not be wise of WG to piss off this group and actually I agree to an extent (as a cruiser main) that BBs should be the single strongest ships. The real problem, as others have pointed out, is numbers. I don't see an issue with 12 vs 12 BB games, in fact I think this is the solution. Introduce a new MM rule, cap BB numbers in normal "mixed" games at 3 per side, and then drop the rest of the BB population into BB only games. Literally everybody is happy this way. You can make all BBs OP without affecting normal game balance too much because there will be few in each one (acting as flagships if you like, very thematic). BB mains get lots of games where they just smash other BBs without being annoyed by the other classes. Short queue times for all. Simples.

Pensacola is it any good now? (Review)

I know Myoko is strong and I did get good results in it, but I found it quite boring and frustrating to play in some ways. I guess that's partly because I played Atago first, so the comparison just resulted in disappointment for me. Pensacola was my first T7 cruiser and I loved it even before the buffs. Like you say, it just fit my playstyle

    British Battleship line for 2017?

I try to avoid fantasies about multiple lines but that's why I said QM. Even if there was a regular BC line, Lion would take the main tree spot, and QM still makes sense as a premium. But generally if we don't expect a BC line, BC premiums make more sense overall, to offer something different.

Benson: 8Atago: 42Mikhail Kutuzov: 45+1= 46Tirpitz : 13-3= 10Shōkaku (2/2/2): 10 Starting to get really tough with downvote choices but I pick Tirpitz because, although it's very strong and fun, it's a fairly predictable BB that should be easy to counter (if more people had a brain) and I don't think it has the surprise game-turning ability or dynamic carry potential of the other ships left in the vote.

    New Mex immunity zone

The guns of the New Mexico have an angle of fall of 10 degrees at 13.7km, nowhere near enough to overcome autobounce on decks. Also, they have enough penetration to beat the belt armour on another New Mexico out to 18km if a perfect broadside is given. What you're seeing here is, as El2aZeR said, some interaction with the turtleback behind the main belt. Basically, at closer range the shells are coming in so flat they may go through the belt but not down into the citadel, or hit the water short and not hit anything, or (in a very low probability hit) autobounce on the turtleback. My suspicion is that the additional angle of fall, while not enough to beat autobounce on horizontal deck, is enough to beat the turtleback (as well as making such hits more likely).

    British Battleship line for 2017?

While I also dislike the needless and often badly executed fantasy refits, to be honest I don't enjoy gameplay at those tiers enough to care. The game simply isn't balanced around WWI combat either, leave it at that and move on. At the very least, the QEs can serve as a template for refits on the other classes, so it would at least be plausible (unless WG deliberately make it implausible for the sake of it being different, that would be something I could not excuse). Having said that, if historical WWI hulls are kicking around as low tier premiums I may be tempted to pick one up, depending on which class it is they sell. I would be far more likely to buy a battlecruiser than a slow battleship though. Queen Mary as built is a natural choice for a T4 premium.

Pensacola is it any good now? (Review)

I'll give you that speed is a bit less, but rudder shift is better than Myoko (only by 0.1s but still), and you missed the crucial stat: turning circle. 620m for Pensacola vs. 780m for Myoko. That's a world of difference in terms of agility and ability to avoid shells. Plus the fact you can dodge without your turrets losing track of target (one of Myoko's biggest weaknesses IMO).

    Japanese cruisers obsolete?

Japanese cruisers are still very, very good at what they do. Not all lines need unique tricks to be good, Japanese cruisers are the best example of something that is fairly vanilla and strong without being OP. The comparison to RN cruisers is complete apples and oranges, you can't decide between two things that are so different which is truly "better". Ultimately it's a matter of preference.

    British Battleship line for 2017?

I will reiterate my belief that we will not see a full refit QE at T6, because the AA would be crazy for that tier and because it would be strictly better than Warspite hence showing it up. Also, the equivalent US classes that we have (New Mexico and Colorado) are not shown in the final refit possible for each class, with DP secondaries. This makes the R class a much more plausible T6 candidate, or a QE top hull based on one of the less modernised ships (Barham or Malaya). Or, the worst possible option, some fictional refit for either class. Orion is tricky, the shells were lighter but the muzzle velocity was higher, and actually the guns overall were more powerful at short range (which matters more on game) than the later heavy shell variants. A reliable 10-gun broadside with 13.5" guns may be too much for T4, but nevertheless I support the idea thematically because the RN did lead with new classes of ships with bigger guns. Plus the ships look cool and quirky, but I guess that will just make WG ruin them with a fictional refit...

Pensacola citadel vs. Amagi and New Orleans citadel vs. North Carolina, both about 10 to 11km.

Where are you getting this idea? Mogami is more agile than Atago and a smaller target. Having played both, I can honestly say if Atago didn't have heal Mogami would be hands down the better ship. @Trainspite I also voted on personal preferences a few times but I thought that was a bit naughty. You know I'm the first to argue "best" is highly subjective, but I thought the point of this thread was to determine "strongest". I'm happy either way! But I'm not trying to persuade you to vote one way or the other, just sparking some discussion as the voting gets a bit dry sometimes Anyway, back to the crunch: Benson: 11Atago: 45Mikhail Kutuzov: 38+1= 39Tirpitz : 17-3= 14Shōkaku (2/2/2): 25

    Elimination Thread 4: Tier VIII

I think you're missing the point of the thread. We're supposed to be voting for ships that are strong in their current state, not what we feel is most balanced. If something makes a ship OP then that should get it the votes. Also, I would argue Kutuzov would still be noticeably superior to Chapaev, due to range, agility and armour, even if it didn't have smoke and Chapaev retained RADAR. By the same logic, Atago without the heal is actually a worse Mogami, and yet you're not down-voting that instead, and with the heal is one of the most OP ships tier for tier in the game and will likely win this thread.

  22. To be honest, I don't consider "camping" to be a problem as such. There are plenty of ways to play a BB aggressively but really badly, and thematically it makes no sense for them to be leading the charge. I would rather be able to use my fast cruisers and DDs to do some scouting and have some nice preliminary skirmishes before too many BBs are in effective range and clogging up the battle space. This is not an MMO with melee tanks and ranged DPS, the dynamic should be different here. We should not be skewing the game towards that kind of mechanic, it's already unrealistic enough. If people play their ship badly there's not much you can do other than play yours well and hope those guys are on the other team.

    1:42 Moskva

The Soviet Union was behind in ship design. The year doesn't mean much, the whole thing was a vanity project based on old tech that they finally were able to catch up on but that others already moved on from. They realised this eventually and cancelled it.
