MM - Good team players win matches, not tiers
Aotearas replied to xenopathia's topic in General Discussion
Give a decent team the tier Xs and the other decent team the tier VIIIs and violá, suddenly the "it's all the player, not the ship" argument falls flat on the [edited]. Just because skill can migitate disadvantagous base situations doesn't mean matchmaking should strive to make an as equal playing field as possible. And whilst I'd like to see a more skillbased matchmaking, that is an impossibility to properly code since skill involves so many situational variables that it's impossible to quantify in simple numbers so a balancer could weight it against other players. As such, the most practical solution is to create a matchmaking that doesn't hand one team an advantage in ship (-types, tiers, division, etc. pp). Fair enough, the really bad MM screwups are thankfully rare (though I typically do get one or two BS matchmaking each gaming session where only looking at ships you could say one team would have a clear advantage over the other), but improving the system to migitate such stuff is a necessity. -
Practically however, you cannot shoot them. With no aimlock and no indicator to crossreference the range with the minimap you can't aim with minimap alone. Shooting without a chance of hitting is simply missing after all.

Have you tried that? If yes with how much success?

First of all, I'm not forcing anyone to play a game they don't like. So take that deriding comment and put it where the sun doesn't shine, mkay? Secondly, OP doesn't even have the basic understanding of game mechanics to be able to tell that reducing spotting distances would make the game even slower than he's already complaining about. OP could have 1k+ battles under his belt and I wouldn't put much stock into his opinion if he couldn't get that right (which is the reason why I said "X amount of experience", not "X amount of games", you don't unlock understanding of the game mechancis based on some arbitrary number of matches played!). No one needs to be a master of the game, but some understanding on how the game works absolutely IS mandatory before people should feel inclined to comment on ... wait for it ... how the game should work. Last but not least, most of the points OP brought forth are typical for low tiers gameplay (limited maps in rotation), typical for inexperienced play (not being able to kill the enemy fast enough), so even if we discounted his lack of understanding about the game mechanics, if he simply kept on playing, some of his issues would solve themselves and the remaining problems would constantly dwindle as he gets more experienced and improves his own gameplay. This has been mentioned a couple times and it is precisely the answer to the OP when he asked if things would improve (though he problably meant it by the way of WG catering to his demands rather than him learning and adapting to the game). There's reasons for not liking the game. Game is too slow paced, okay. If you don't like slower paced games, then this game simply isn't for you. No biggie. Valid reason not to like the game! But then suggesting to change spotting so the game gets even slower paced ... what? Not valid criticism and not coherent with above mentioned reason, ergo invalid! And that last point is what I've been commenting on, false opinion based on wrong/incomplete understanding of the game mechanics. Not sure if he came in here with the wrong expectations and thus set himself up for disappointment of he genuinely simply doesn't understand the game design, but wrong is wrong and if he (or others) wanted people to take his criticism seriously, then he ought to play more until he can actually form valid criticism rather than what is an incoherent rambling. It's that easy!

The point isn't to have X games before having an opinion. It is having X experience before having a valid opinion based on X understanding the game. Yes, the game is slower paced than most other MP games, but that is to be expected when you play a game about ships. No, you are not spotted too far out and suggesting that spotting distances should be reduced would slow down the game even more, when OP complained about the slow pace of the game already (???). Killing ships takes too long? Maybe if you shoot the wrong ammunition or can't hit the enemy, otherwise ships die quite easily. Especially when you play IJN DDs whose main armament usually nukes the target if it hits. Only a couple maps in the rotation? That changes once you progress up the tiers, as low tier games are designed to have fewer maps so people have a chance to learn the ships before having to memorize on how to play the various different maps. OP came in with wrong expectations and proceded to judge the game prematurely without an understanding of how it works, or even how his preferred changes would in fact change the game (contrary to his stated preferences!). Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion. That doesn't change the fact that some opinions are wrong. And common sense tells that most opinions formed before giving the subject enough attention to accumulate experience, it'll be wrong, hence why "too few games played, come back if you've played some more and actually know what you talk about".

Yubari and Sims back on sale in Premium Shop
Aotearas replied to OldGrandad's topic in General Discussion
It was nerfed indirectly. Afaik ships were a good bit less manouvreable back when the Sims was introduced, which made dealing with the shell arc much less of an issue since ships were still easier to hit. Also the Sims trades off torpedo damage for additional range, when most if not all premium DDs since don't, which gives the Sims a lacklustre torpedo utility compared with other premium DDs like say the Blyskawica. It may have been a solid ship in its inception, but the powercreep in WoWS is real, especially with premium ships and the Sims is simply left behind. -

Which is hilarious, because WG's inability to hold up to their words in face of possible quick short term revenue is so bad it goes full circle. I fully expect the Gremy and Nikolai to get a sale sometime. -

Which is why WG should adjust the ships parameters until it no longer outclasses everything. Even with flat bruteforce-nerfhammering its stats to Gnevny performance (keeping the longer range torps), this ship would still be good (Gnevny guns alone are amazing already, plus being able to stealthtorp!) and no one says that's how WG has to do this. Considering they (WG) have been adamant about WoWS not being a pay2win game, the whole deal with objectively and admittedly (!!!) overpowered ships like the Imperator Nikolai I. and Gremyashchy (both Russian, eh?) are a disgrace and proof that WG is only sweettalking, but not acting upon their communicated convictions. Being reluctant to nerf premiums because people paid money for them is one thing, refusing to balance premium ships against the rest of the game is foolish at the very best! -
Last time I checked, cyclone doesn't care for reasons. All ships are balanced against each other for normal ingame weather conditions, then comes cyclone and throws it out the window ... reasons? Besides, isn't on of the recurring arguments in favour for the cyclone "muh realism, bruh"? Let people have their realism then. Who cares if CVs are going to miss in most high tier games because they always stand a chance to being grounded randomly, right? Right???

No Gremyaschy, no deal. -
Also, no other ships will be able to provide supportive fire against a DD unless they are within 8km from it, making it that much easier to rush a ship in a DD, particularily when the earliest they're going to know you're there is 8km away, nevermind DDs with a lower detectability than 8km, say any IJN one who can continue stalking their targets as if nothing changed. I can tell from that statement alone that you're not too familiar with using Situational Awareness to triangulate enemy ship positions, ... or battleship gameplay that goes beyond "steer towards enemy, shoot enemy, repeat until either of you is dead", the latter of which is only supplemented with your ongoing "BBs only wanna snipe from back" nonsense you keep throwing around.

His undying spirit might still be lurking, bound to the fora by curse until such day the question of his soul is answered.
-
You do realize that a New Mexico is trotting along with 21 knots maximum speed (and it only ever reaches that speed if you throw it off a waterfall!), right?
-
Yes, because apparently any BB that doesn't get within 8km distance to other BBs, cruisers and DDs is OBVIOUSLY only wanting to snipe from max range.
-
I had switched to AP because it was already on fire and my HE hits alone were a measly ~600 per volley. So there's that. All in all, good job in ignoring all the points I made in the post to single a situational anecdote out to hark on about.
-
Well, I finished an Aoba via triple-citadelling her with Ap in my Farragut and been raining Ap on the superstructure of a New Mexico for around 1400 damage each volley (which quickly adds up with that rate of fire) ... Ap is certainly not a thing to just forget about, though the times when it's actually effective are very situational. Even a broadside cruiser won't net you much damage with AP if they are too far because your AP loses penetration over distance and with the shell arcs on US DDs you'll hit even the broadside of a ship at a downward angle, so what little penetration you have left isn't going to cut it in most cases. I'd say keep with HE for anything further other than 10km and see how much damage you do with superstructure at around 10km with AP on cruisers and battleships. Targets at 6km or less is where AP can do wonders if they present a nice flat side, even if you don't citadel them the normal penetration damage can add up quite nicely, but even shallow angling will likely cause most if not all your shots to bounce off the belt armour of any cruiser and a BBs conning tower isn't exactly a soft target either if that's the only thing to shoot at (nevermind that at these ranges, you have torpedos). Though I can agree with the previous posters saying that this is something you ought to have found out by yourself already when you got all the way to tier IX.

Well, better than the original idea imho. Still not a fan of that cyclone in its current form. And I don't believe the chance for it to happen is the 7% that I've heard being flung around. Perhaps 7% for every minute of the game, but I've had cyclones happen roughly every second game that qualified for the cyclone (i.e. high tier match). And I'm confident enough in my memory to rule out confirmation bias alone making up the difference between ~50% and 7%.

Heresy! You can never have enough Kongou! And grinding the IJN midtier BBs is as good an excuse to sail her as you'll ever gonna get. As punishment I wish upon you my Amagi curse (maybe it'll stop the shitstreak for me when you get it <_< )!!!

Anime-Empfehlungen der deutschen Community
Aotearas replied to Kiriseo's topic in Die Messe (Offtopic)
What Were Your Greatest Gaming Achievements Today ?
Aotearas replied to Hanszeehock's topic in General Discussion
What setup? Afaik strike loadout doesn't get fighters and I doubt you shot all these down with your CV's AA, so if you can do such amount of damage with the stock configuration, I might actually bring out my Bogue for a few spins rather than focusing on the IJN CV line. -

What Were Your Greatest Gaming Achievements Today ?
Aotearas replied to Hanszeehock's topic in General Discussion
Not uninstalling after today's crap RNG and MM treatment. We made it a hard fight, ending as topscorers or at least top third XP-wise on our team each time, but those kind of match-ups are lost games as long as the enemy players aren't medically braindead. It did not help that the few medically braindead players mostly ended up on our side, just to add insult to injury. No points for guessing how those two particular games turned out. Today the game really did its best to just piss me off at every corner. -
Which forum members have you seen in random battles?

Our division met TheCinC and MightyThor83. Then we killed them. Then we won. -
Out of the two, Fusou, no question. Though I'm more than just slightly biased because my Amagi seems to be cursed and I'm not allowed to have any good games in it. Objectively however the Fusou has a much more advantagous matchmaking, with it being an excellent tier VI BB, whereas the Amagi has fierce competition with the North Carolina (a ship that is working like a charm for me!) and the Tirpitz, nevermind that you can face ships like the Yamato, which will simply take a huge dump over the Amagi, whereas the same isn't true if you'd put a Fusou against an Amagi in the same situation. Imho, what the Amagi really could use would be a bit more range. Just over 18km without the GFCS upgrade is pityful for a t8 BB and the maximum range with the GFCS upgrade is still a long shot behind its peers and even its lower tier brethren (don't know it exactly from the top of my head, but I think except the Kawachi and possibly the Myougi every other IJN BB outranges her). Whilst those guns are more accurate than anything comparable at its tier, you need to get much closer than other BBs, which isn't favourable with the weaker armour and turret layout with most firepower astern. A North Carolina can always simply charge bow on and a Tirpitz can charge forward, tank damage and then nuke opposing BBs with torpedoes ... Amagi can do none of that. That makes it the most difficult battleship for its tier, the Fusou has much less competition and a better starting position compared with that. On a sidenote, skipping the Nagato is a no-no imho. It's a solid ship. Not quite as enjoyable as the Colorado I found out (for me at least), but a rocksolid performance and definately a change from the shotgun playstyle the Fusou excells at, which is kind of important if you wish to exploit the Amagi's accuracy as more carefully lined up shots are potentionally much more rewarding.
