BB's - Something needs to be done before more are released.
Aotearas replied to ApesTogetherStronK's topic in General Discussion
German BBs in general are just too forgiving. Good armour protection from HE tier per tier (only exception being the tier VII onwards superstructures, but that module HP depletes rather swiftly) and lolturtleback armour that lets potatoes sail broadside on to almost everything ... they still die, but the consequence is so delayed due to the near impossibility of citadel hits that by the time they die, the average attention span of your typical random BBob has already passed and they don' seem to connect the dots to realize that if you show broadside, you're gonna have a bad time, mkay. Add the hydro for tier VIII onwards which also makes it stupidly easy to dodge torpedoes and the longrange secondaries that when specced into them can do a good chunk of damage against cruisers and DDs, plus set a couple nasty fires in BB brawls ... you end up with a BB line that stupidly forgiving to play, which directly equates to players not learning crucial skills because they're quite literally never outright forced to learn them, since just leeroy'ing around still gives them good enough results to please the people that just want to make big guns go boom.- 195 replies

A small change to encourage more aggressive BBs?
Aotearas replied to Kruzenstern's topic in General Discussion
Wouldn't help much. You wouldn't believe (or well ... maybe you would actually) the amount of Yamato players whose first action into the match is to start reversing. -
Stuff like that is why I watch allies with torpedoes more closely than the enemies. Less so in the higher tiers than in the low and mid tiers, but sadly there's plenty enough people who are completely incapable of realizing the consequences of their actions, or are simply willfully ignorant. You're not even save from division mates

BB's - Something needs to be done before more are released.
Aotearas replied to ApesTogetherStronK's topic in General Discussion
Except that your opinion is utterly incorrect. Shells randomly dispersing far enough to hit a dodging cruiser by virtue of practically shotgunning the area around the aiming point can and WILL overmatch and citadel cruiser if their caliber is large enough (which in most cases they are), despite the fact that the actual hit occured well outside the actual aimpoint of the BB player. And the fact that pure RNG regularily and severely hurts competently played (i.e.: evading) cruisers is a huge part of the typically low cruiser survivability since they don't have the armour to shrug of a stray shell and they don't have the HP to sustain that kind of damage. And just because that is RNG and plain luck with no skill involved past the point of aiming in the general direction of the enemy, doesn't mean it happens rarely. It happens all the time, several times a day for myself and others ingame. And as much as I can admit that those problems aren't as prevalent in the low and midtiers so I can't exactly fault your impression, the actual BB overpopulation that is such a thorn in the cruiser players' eyes peaks at tier VIII and continues on into the highest tiers, where BBs are not only more numerous than cruisers (meaning lots of BBs shooting at fewer cruisers), they're also more accurate and have a much higher damage potential than their low or midtier siblings. That is why we're arguing based on the high tiers and why your points regarding low and midtier BB shortcomings are of merely tangible relevance pertaining the prevalent hightier BB meta problems. You'll find out the hard way when you start getting into tier X games in your tier VIII cruiser being one of only three cruisers per team and having 5 tier IX/X BBs just looking hungrily at your ship for being a XP and credits pinata ... and you can't exactly sneak around since the other ships are DDs that will outspot you, whence every BB in range will drop what's doing to shoot at you since they can kill you much easier than anything else they could possible shoot at. Trust me when I say that this gets very old, very frustrating, very fast. -
BB's - Something needs to be done before more are released.
Aotearas replied to ApesTogetherStronK's topic in General Discussion
Do you have a coherent argument somewhere? BBs have the armour and health to get into good spots and out of them without instantly dying. A cruiser has much, MUCH smaller margins of error and gets disproportionally punished for each and every misstep compared to all other classes. The simple matter of the fact is that for BBs, there's good spots to work if you know what you're doing and not a lot of bad spots to be unless you're stupid enough to practically beg to get shot into your broadside or torpedoed. For a cruiser, those good spots are few in between and you have to get there relatively unharmed in the first place. Particularily tier VIII or lower cruisers can't even trade a bit of health to push into such positions because they can't heal any of that back. And if things get too hot, cruisers can't simply disengage. They do so and showbroadside and any BB player worth his salt will take a shot, guess your chances for surviving that. In a cruiser, you have to commit. In a BB you can just turn around and leg it, a BB can survive that, a cruiser much less so. How many times have you deleted a near full health BB with one salvo in your own BB? Now how many times have you done that to a cruiser? THERE is your answer! And no, I didn't contradict myself. You ought to look up a dictionary to check what that word means. Those lucky stray shell citadels occur in nearly every match, either to me or someone else. That is firsthand, empirical evidence. Your precious number of 1:10000 is just you pulling BS out of your arse. -
BB's - Something needs to be done before more are released.
Aotearas replied to ApesTogetherStronK's topic in General Discussion
... I don't think you're qualified to call others biased when your own arguments can be countered by just putting a BB in the right spot and not having to worry about the majority of supposed flaws. Also, 1:10000 chance for lucky salvoes? Tell that to the BBs that keep landing lucky citadels because dispersion landed one or two shells so far off his aimpoint that even when dodging his aim, cruisers still get citadels straight through the arse because those shells just overmatch the weak hull armour and slam straight into the citadel lenghtwise of the ship, taking of a third of most cruisers HP despite them having done all they to avoid getting hit save for not engaging anything at all. Imho the first thing that needs to be changed is silly citadel penetrations after overmatching armour sections. Just flat out apply a penetration check that say if overmatch=true, citadel penetration=false. Shells that overmatch any armour should be limited to regular penetration damage only. Not only would that help hugely against random arse citadels on cruisers despite their best efforts of dodging, it would also improve the interclass BB balance if the Yamato can no longer lolcitadel other BBs straight through the bow because overmatch mechanics. Regular penetrations are still plenty damaging anyway. If that is too hardhanded after playtests, maybe just limit the max damage after overmatch penetrations to some other percentage, for as long as two stray BB shells can no longer double citadel a cruiser who's actively dodging just because RNG said so. Next change could be a reduction in the RNG spread for salvoes (i.e.: make BBs more accurate) so that if you shoot at something and the target dodges, he WILL actually dodge and not hit by stray shells going nowhere near the actual aimpoint of the BB player. It would also increase the skillgap between bad and good BB players. And if none of that works, just cap the BB count to three per side. Also, the flippin' powercreep in utility and AA power has to go. Gneisenau at tier VII has absolutely INSANE AA and the fictional German BB tophulls have plenty powerful enough AA to deter/bleed CV strikes all by themselves, when really any isolated BB should be easy pickings for a CV (the only exception should be US BBs since strong AA is supposed to be their trademark). tl;dr version: Nerf overmatch so people trying to angle/dodge actually benefit when facing large caliber guns. Reduce RNG (currently your salvo can entire miss, or OSK a target just depending on RNG and this is utterly ridiculous). Increase skill ceiling, lower skill floor for BBs. Backtrack the powercreep. -

I suppose there's no point in commenting on that particular point about the threat until WG has figured out exactly how they're going to deal with. Considering the whole DMCA debacle never seemed to make it towards the upper echolons until crap already hit the fan, someone (I won't be naming but I suppse we all know who's the candidate in question) has grossly overstepped his responsibilities and powers. Jingles has been fully prepared to jump ship until the head of EU management essentially did a face-to-face and was quite vocal about how he thinks about that stuff and that's about as much as he can say until WG decides how to deal with that little ticking bomb. This is the kind of fallout that results in heads rolling and the EU manager has stuck his own out with a guarantee of WG not using copyright strikes ever as long as he has any say in it, which is about as definitive an answer you can get and unless he suddenly finds himself unemployed all of a sudden that's quite the commitment in terms of company policy he stated, so I believe it perfectly fair for Jingles to let them deal their own internal issues out without dropping more fuel into the flames. I also feel that Jingles and Jim could've possibly done well to coordinate, because Jingles' conclusion (which is about as binding for WG as it gets without a written contract) does lead on entirely different than what Jim concluded with by what I'd strongly suggest is due to not having had the same direct link to WG as Jingles did ... plus whatever WG NA is smoking. Jim however did shed a good light into the copyright threat itself (neatly complementing Jingles in that regard!), plus that guy always manages to crack me up and that 0.1% ESL player tidbit was just glorious. By the way, if you like highly critical videogame journalism, I absolutely recommend Jim Sterling and his entire Jimquisition library is a goldmine. Bit said we didn't get another F*ck Konami news segment ... they've been suspisciously quiet- 217 replies

The Competitive scene in World of Warships
Aotearas replied to Ginger_General's topic in General Discussion
Aye. Considering the typical WoWs player who isn't deeply invested in the actual community or clan stuff pretty much doesn't care anyway and may not even know given the barebones announcement, 3k isn't halfbad if that number is true. I suppose if clan activities make it into the game, that awareness will spike a good chunk depending on how attractive WG want to make it. Only problem is that competitive WoWs is a pretty stand-off'ish affair with most of the deciding action not being typical woah moments to captivate onlookers, so I doubt this will really get that popular with the more casual playerbase. -

So, ever since patch 0.6.1 my game has been constantly crashing (several times per playing session). Anything could trigger the CTD, from clicking on UI elements in port (selecting ships, opening captain skills, trying to assign captain skills, clicking through menues for example) aswell as when clicking "battle" or when leaving the queue to load a battle. I had originally thought it might be mods causing conflicts, but I tried without any modifications and nothing changed. I hope doing a clean reinstall would fix it (possibly just a bad update that messed up some gamedata during patching), so I had uninstalled the game today before I downloaded the entire game plus new update (didn't dowload or install any mods!), but the CTD problem is still persisting. Never had any issues before patch 0.6.1 and crashes were incredibly rare. Now I get more crashes per gaming session than I got before 0.6.1 combined. Didn't change any PC components, didn't switch OS and I like to think that I keep my PC clean and lean from unnecessary clutter programs that might degrade performance. Would attach the WG Check utility report file, but apparently I'm not permitted to upload this kind of file, so tough luck WG with getting more information unless you sort out your problems!

Constant CTDs after patch 0.6.1 (continuing with 0.6.2)
Aotearas replied to Aotearas's topic in Archive
Yay, a new problem. Game now also randomly freezes up in port. Problem is I can't alt-tab out of it or otherwise close the game (I can open the task manager, but not actually use it since the game just won't minimize at all) so I have to f*cking hard reset my PC each time to fix this sh*t. Seriously WG, what the flying hell gives? This game ran absolutely PERFECTLY up until 0.6.1 and now it's just a giant cavalcade of f*ck-ups! -

Let's be perfectly honest here, a good chunk of players do play like they were mentally challenged and if you play solo with no divisionmates to back you up and are utterly dependent on those random players, it typically degenerates into a crapfest the moment the game starts. I start to get a bit salty too if I see a full HP BB with Survivability Expert maxrange sniping from our spawn whilst I was busy kiting and tanking half the enemy fleet alone in my cruiser or some such. Besides, my argument on him being objective was regarding his ship reviews when aquiles said he wasn't objective and just crying "OP SHIP", which Flamu simply doesn't, period. And a being a bit salty in chat when things turn to crap isn't being toxic (at least as far as I understand the meaning of it).- 217 replies

Flamu is arrogant at times, but he can back that attitude up with actual skill. And sometimes he gets a bit salty in chat when someone is being a total potato, but toxic, no. He says how he thinks it is (and he almways emphasizes that it's just his opinion) and he ALWAYS gives his reasons why (which why aquiles' comment about Flamu not being objective is a load of bull!) from a gameplay/balance perspective. He is most evidently not just screaming "OMG THIS SHIP ITS OP AAGH" or whatever. So no, Flamu isn't toxic and he's as objective as anyone can reasonably expect.- 217 replies

That is correct, but I'm pretty sure you can't claim fair use if the majority of the content is insults, etc.. Might not count for slander depending on the exact wording but at least where I live, insults are punishable by law too (just very rarely taken to court for mostly economic reasons, duh). And if the fair use claim doesn't hold water in light of the video content/conduct, then de facto the copyright claim goes through, or so I'd think it would work out ... Anyhow, the point I'm making is the actual threat of a copyright takedown isn't outlandish from a legal point of view as far as I understand the matter (which admittedly isn't much). It's still a disastrous PR move though and an unjustified escalation since WG already dropped him from the CC program as a result ... but this IS WG and they haven't exactly been having a charming track record for marketing.- 217 replies

The legal action of a copyright strike is not entirely baseless. Technically they could argue that Foch was using copyrighted material as a basis to badmouth the company and it would probably come down to how the judge rules on it if this were to be brought to court. The defining question would be if the use of the copyrighted material is in direct correlation with the badmouthing, i.e.: integral (which I would assume it would, since he's specifically talking about this tank to base his tangent on in the context of that video). The other question would be if his conduct constituted slander or insults, which I can't say since I never watched the video, but assuming from what I read, the used language was rather heated. This is probably one of the very few cases in which this could actually hold up in court, so the legality of that move is actually not that questionable. The PR action however has been a complete mess. Regardless of the possible viability of a copyright strike in this specific case, threatening someone with it is still a dickmove and reeks of trying to suppress unwelcome opinions rather than police the tone of the content. WG already had the appropriate action of removing Foch from the contributer program, removing the video entirely is unnecessary.- 217 replies

Oh dear, we're getting a Wargaming Jimquisition episode! This is going to be gold. Wargaming better prepare a couple premium fire extinguishers and medipacks for that one. Also, I'm mildly surprised something like this happened. Jingles is also prodding that particular hornets nest about the threatened copyright strike and if what I'm reading in this thread is true (which it seems, but I'm not going to fact check as I have next to none experience with the WoT community!), unless Wargaming can make a really, really convincing statement Jingles has hinted that he'd quit as community contributor if the copyright takedown threat was an actual thing here. And although I'm not the biggest Jingles fan around by a long shot (really only watch his WoT videos and I suppose I can only enjoy them because I have no clue about WoT so I don't know what he gets wrong ... because oh my I can't watch his WoWs videos, too many mistakes and a lack of understanding of game mechanics, etc.) I don't doubt he is a big publicity factor for Wargaming (he got me interested in WoWs, so thanks for that Jingles!) and even a nice quiet divorce would be a blow to Wargaming's publicity. Someone done goofed hella big here. edit:// Wow, even iChase made a response video here and is actually saying WG screwed up hard with their conduct (from a PR perspective that is, he had a couple other things to say about copyright, but I suppose that's about as strong a WG critical response we can possibly expect from him). Welp, WG is either going to have to be preparing a big apology or they might end up having lots of CC spots to fill in the coming days. With a bit of luck this is going to snowball up the WG management and start a couple changes with how WG handles their communities for the better. Or it could just end up getting worse if WG decides to stomp their feet instead, I give it about 50/50 ...- 217 replies

Actually I meant that sex is binary. As far as I understand the definition, sex is defined by your physical, biological body. If your primary sexual organ is a ding-dong, your sex is male, if it's a vagina, you're female. And so far I don't know about significant genetical variances that resulted in a third or more biological sex. At the very least none that are widespread enough to be officially and socially accepted as a distinctive third (or more) sex by the scientific/medical consensus because so far I haven't heard of sexual trimorphism yet. If that is factually incorrect, I'd actually welcome a medical lecture because that'd be something completely new to me. Though I suspect if someone (possibly me) is wrong, then it's the definitions and use of the words, not the concept they represent, although a quick google search tells me I'm using the definitions correctly edit:// Oh wow, apparently you can't write the word for the male reproductive organ in here, it get's auto-censored ... edit2:// Gotta use slang then ... auto-censors are oppressing me!
-
To be exact, sex is binary, gender is not. And as funny as I think it is to see people identifying their gender as attack helicopters (more often than not truly jokingly), a grand many people are just being special snowflakes trying to rebrand themselves into something they consider unique. What's important about the whole gender stuff is that gender (unlike sex) is defined not by what parts you got dangling on your body, but what society expects you to behave based on what parts you got dangling on your body and the two don't always fit together for individual subjects. That is actually a phenomenon as old as the bronze age (if not older) and well documented amongst a plethora of different cultures. So yeah, gender isn't binary and it's only correct (not only politically correct) to accept and respect that, which is no doubt what your father meant. But you're also not incorrect that a good deal of people are taking that concept to the ridiculous extreme: as funny as it is, attack helicopters are no gender no matter how you look at it and such folks can't just demand respect for every frilly idea of their selfidentity. Live and let live. People genuinely having trouble fitting themselves into social gender norms typically don't make much fuzz about it (because it makes them feel alien and few people like to actively excerbate that by pointing that out ...). The other sort that demand you refer to them as xhe, zhe or whatnot 10 minutes ago invented pronoun to their gender identity of a dark cosmic grimgar-halfling, just turn your back and try to hold those chuckles in until you're out of earshot, chances are they'd be making a huge scene if they don't get the attention they're seeking.

Which forum members have you seen in random battles?
Aotearas replied to Cobra6's topic in General Discussion
Met fallenkezef in his Warspite as my pals and me were having a bit fun in our tier VI ships. He didn't get to shine much though as our division did the only thing you can do as bottom-tier in a tier VIII game ... go balls to the wall and just smash right into the nearest enemy ... fallenkezef soon found himself alone and was ruthlessly dispatched by a Hipper rushing up to torp him. The fun was a bit dampened in the later stages of the game as a particularily obnoxious individual thought it'd be a good time to start talking some real sh*t about polish people including rather uncharming jokes about WW2 and chambers ... the whole idiotic yadda yadda. Sadly I was already out of reports for the day (you wouldn't believe what I had seen this day, urgh). Hope you had better luck trying out the freshly oiled up Warspite turrets in other games.
