You might be wanting to look at different games for that. I hear 'Atlantic Fleet' has a lot of historic gameplay scenarios and also plays much more similar to a historic simulation compared to WoWs arcade'y gameplay design. 9.99€ over at Steam, check that one out! Jingles also had a couple videos about that game (Battle of River Plate scenario for example): -

How about reducing the RNG so poorly aimed volleys will miss without the potential of lolRNGhits and properly aimed volleys will hit without lolRNGbracketing? Two wrongs don't make a right ... -
To be perfectly honest, the anime is mediocre at best, at least in my opinion. The fights are neat, but after the first couple big clashes (Alnus Hill, Italica and the Ancient Fire Dragon) the fights lose their wow factor and by then they're just generic OP modern military roflstomping medieval armies. The series hasn't been accused of being downright propagandistic JSDF fanwank for no reason. And the anime itself is simply miscast. A-1 Productions almost exclusively does shounen shows (mostly slice of life and romances), but the novels are quite clearly seinen material (for whom I'm speaking gibberish, shounen means the target audience are young teenagers and seinen is for young adults to adults) ... it shows in animation, character design and the depiction of adult themes like violence. If we'd compare the anime with the manga (which is a seinen production as opposed to the anime's shounen) you can see the differences like knight and day. The anime is particularily guilty of simply cutting out essential scenes, most notably Rory's first presentation which is quite crucial to define her outlook on violence which is an inherent trait for her characterization. Or in short, if you're watching the anime, I dare say you're doing yourself a disfavour. I'd recommend reading the manga instead and perhaps watch clips of the anime for scenes you really like, but overall the manga is bounds ahead. Spoiler alert: Kuribayashi's big badass moment comparision: Do note the extreme difference in the handling of depicting the violence, that's one of the differences between a shounen and a seinen. The differences don't stop there, but it's easil the most notable difference. The manage being a seinen is generally more mature and it helps drive the setting. There's a difference between the anime with the JSDF just roflstomping knights and legions with offscreen violence and camera cuts ... and the manga that is clearly driving home the difference in power to make viscerally clear exactly how terrifying that is for the people that are fighting against the JSDF. That gives the show that slight edge to it that doesn't make the action utterly boring. Welp, that's my opinion on this topic ... If you want a great military anime, I do recommend 'Legend of the Galactic Heroes'. An oldie (80s anime) and a bit of a slow burner at the start, but it really picks up and developes into a real epic (110 episodes ...). Think 'A Song of Ice and Fire' (or Game of Thrones for anyone who only watched the TV series) ... IN SPACE!!! Otherwise, if you're looking for (para-) militarily themed action, I wholeheartedly recommend 'Black Lagoon' (absolutely amazing and the action in particular is simply balls, plus surprisingly deep and diverse characters, Hansel and Gretel will bring you to tears) and 'Jormungand' (has a bit of a weak ending, but the the rest of the show is good and the action topnotch, I'm just saying firing a 122mm fieldhowitzer beehive shell from a cargo airplane). 'Drifters' is also a neat snack (infamous warriors/soldiers from all eras stranded on a fantasy world to fight for two different factions) with a similar setting like 'Gate'. ... sorry by the way if that sounded too much like a rant. I had discovered the manga and grew quite fond of it a good while before the anime became a thing and was ecstatic about it, until I saw A-1 Pictures thoroughly disappointed me, so yeah - my opinion about the anime version is a bit jaded. The series itself is enjoyable (despite still being JSDF fanwank) for what it does and ths story is actually quite interesting with decent characters (if they aren't butchered by the anime cutting crap out or making them into comically cute girls), it's just that the manga is plain better imho.

That would force a change in MM, though not necessarily the problem, people will still prefer BBs over cruisers if they can simply nuke them regardless of angle or getting nuke respectively. MM limits might also increase waiting times or try to force fetch lower tier ships to plug holes if not enough equal tier ships are in the queue, which might lead to other undesired situations. Treating the symptoms doesn't heal the disease. Yes, only overmatches would be limited by that change. Any hit where an AP shell hits and penetrates the armour without overmatching should stay unaffected. Showing broadside should still be punished hard, but angling and evading should be rewarded by considerably reducing the potential damage you can take. Besides, with the combined BB accuracy buff, any that can compensate for evasive manouvers will get a greater number of normal pens which should make up for the lack of a lucky citadel when it comes to average damage. And with more reliable accuracy, any BB player who can aim well should see an increase in average damage as it also means they can capitalize more consistently on any enemy that isn't actively dodging (as it should be imho, no one should be able to show broadside and live by virtue of the enemy just having bullocks dispersion RNG). Skilled cruisers benefit overall, skilled BBs benefit overall and in a direct confrontation between a skilled cruiser and a skilled BB, it comes down to the exact skill difference (positioning, baits and evasion vs aim and baits respectively). At least that's the theory behind that suggestion. This post has been edited by the moderation team due to swearing. -

Aotearas replied to G01ngToxicCommand0's topic in General Discussion
I am talking about 15km+, actively dodging and still getting hit by a single stray BB AP shell that proceeds to overmatch my armour and citadels me. And I have an issue with that since these days there's more BBs than cruisers in a match, which means a LOT of stray BB AP shells that can and ultimately will do just that. Which in turn only results in people playing cruisers less and less because in fact most people don't quite like losing a third of their HP despite making no mistakes and still getting citadeled. This is a meta problem as much as it's a balancing issue. No amout of "I have no issue with that" is going to solve that very real problem. -

You do know you also get a port slot with the ship, aye? So it's not taking any precious port slots away. And if you still don't like it and never want to play it, you can sell it and you essentially got a free port slot. IMO = In my opinion (also usually seen as IMHO = in my honest opinion) etc = et cetera (you should know this one from school, latin for "and so on") AR = short for the Adrenaline Rush captain skill DE = short for the Demolition Expert captain skill BFT= short for the Basic Firing Training captain skill AFT = short for the Advanced Firing Training captain skill CE = short for the Concealment Expert captain skill IFHE = short for the Inertia Fuze High Explosive captain skill -
Battleships should earn 0 XP and credits for CA kills
Aotearas replied to G01ngToxicCommand0's topic in General Discussion
Problem is, all it takes is one stray BB shell hitting you (cuz RNG) at anything that isn't an auto-bounce angle (or well enough armoured not to get overmatched), hit your citadel and violá, a third to quarter of your total HP is gone. Not saying that dodging doesn't work, it keeps you alive for much longer than if you'd straightline broadside, but it's not a reliable counter. And good players that observed your evasive routine (let's face it, people typically do not consciously try to randomize their dodging) can compensate. The inherent problem in any cruiser vs battleship engagement is that BBs will overmatch most of a cruiser's armour and can absolutely penetrate the citadel armour that's behind wherever they just overmatched. Imho one possible solution would be to simply limit the overmatch mechanic to normal penetrations, i.e.: after overmatching ANYTHING, no citadel penetrations, just normal pens. A nice little side effect would also be that the Yamato can no longer lolpen other BBs and citadel them straight through the nose/aft which should improve the interclass balance for the hightier BBs, coincidentally also making way to roll back on a couple buffs (i.e.: citadel lowering) that also impacted cruiser gameplay (who now have a harder time scoring citadels on broadside BBs ... To balance out, make BB guns more accurate (tighter dispersion). No more lucky overmatch-citadels, but competent BB players who know how to aim should be getting more reliable normal pen salvoes (which still hurt plenty). Making BB guns more accurate would also enable BB players to more consistently punish bad play (a.k.a. broadside straightlining) rather than raging at the apparent n00b protection of a broadside straightlining cruiser taking three or more broadside salvoes but dispersion only gives you overpens and near misses. It would also increase the skillgap between good BB players who can (compensate) aim and those who can't (bad players will have much less luck with getting random hits from shotgun spreads if they didn't aim correctly). Overall, those two simple changes have the potential to solve quite a number of balance problems. No more citadels after overmatching something and making BBs more accurate. -

Eh, it's a funbarge and you get it for free. I personally rather have a ship in port than a purely cosmetic flag that I barely ever see even if I were to mount it on my ships. On a tangent, since I already had the Smith, what was I supposed to get instead? The reward screen showed the ship (including the elite XP I already had on it. because I already have it, duh) and nothing about the typical compesnation for those who already have the ship (credits) and the game didn't supply any notifications that I might check in the notification backlog so I literally have zero idea if I got anything other than the port slot, reserve slot and an unskilled captain which I promptly dismissed (19 point gearing captain on a tier II premium, bwahahaha). -
Why, I hunt DDs in my BBs all the time.

As she is right now, the Prinzessin Eugen is just a carbon copy of the Hipper and thus not worth spending money on (I only got her through the christmas crates, would NOT spend money to deliberately buy here). That said the Hipper, whilst overwhelmingly mediocre, is not a bad ship so neither is the Eugen .. and for me she's actually quite the lucky ship. If one positively must have a german premium ship, I'd still recommend the Scharnhorst over the Prinz Eugen, cheaper, much better performance for her tier (which relativizes the Eugen's captain XP bonus since you typically make more average XP in the Scharnhorst), better MM bracket and can still be used to train cruiser and battleship captains alike due to how adaptable the Scharnhorst is. She's a collector item. Maybe worth its price after some buffing (perhaps a radar which she was known for, a RoF increase or a blanket performance buff to german 203 AP characteristics) but right now you essentially only pay for the looks. She does look nice though ...

Random Double Strikes are best Double Strikes. Saw one DD firing in smoke and delegated on TB squadron to do a blind drop, but just as the TBs were in the process of dropping I saw another trail of shells coming from the smoke near my drop point ... ended up sinking the previously unnoted DD and the rest of the dropped torps continued their merry way and killed the intended target -> Ka-Ching Didn't get too much damage done because I was quite busy munching up the airplanes of the enemy Hiryuu who was clearly out of his depth, kept strafing his squadrons to kingdom come, cornered his CV and utterly locked him out of the game, poor sod. As usual I would've loved to personalize the Spoiler tags but alas, WG forum things happened ... -

lolwtf Fail division and low tier CV appreciation thread
Aotearas posted a topic in General Discussion
Take a gander at this little gem I had just the last game: Non-faildivision Bogue gets dragged into a tier VII double CV game due to a Zuiho faildivisioning with a Fusou. Results in tier V CVs (who can't even use alt attacks because WG balance logic) having to share the same airspace with a Saipan and Kaga, both CVs that outperform those poor seals by orders of magnitudes. I have little sympathy for the faildivisioning Zuiho facing Saipan's tier IX aircraft (karma game on point!) but at the same time that Saipan might aswell have been on the enemy teammeaning a completely innocent Bogue would have to duke it out in this MM due to no fault of his/her own. Not that the fight against a Kaga is much easier as the Bogue can't afford to lose aircraft due to low reserves whereas the Kaga, well ... This match-up exemplifies PERFECTLY what's wrong with faildivisions and WG's low tier CV balance. No tier V CV should ever face a tier VII CV. Despite the fact that this wouldn't be possible under normal MM circumstances, a simple faildivision can still bypass the standard MM filters and create such a f*cked up scenario. How many such messed up games does WG need to finally get rid of faildivisions? Every ship in a division should be of the same tier, period! If people want to do whacky stuff like fighting tier Xs with an Umikaze they should unlock the Training Room and have some private fun without messing up the game of other people! And the low tier CV balance, i.e.: removing alt attacks from low tier CVs entirely? Congratulations, I'm sure those two CVs had plenty fun not being able to do anything but click their squadrons onwards whereas the higher tier CVs could simply munch them up without opposition with something as trivial as a strafe where they don't even risk an unlucky RNG roll that might give the poor seals an aircraft kill. And though this particular example is hopefully rarer than common sense, low tier Cvs still have to face that possibility everytime they get matched up in a double CV game with tier VI CVs which can use alt attacks. WG, if you want to balance low tier CVs, don't neuter quintessential gameplay mechanics. IF low tier CVs are too strong, nerf their damage output (low tier airdropped torps can nuke basically everything with a single good drop, might want to touch that ... just a hint) and fighter performance (lower the strafing AA dps bonus to reduce the gap between those who strafe and those who don't if you wish to reduce the skillgap between sealclubbers and newbies ... also teach people that ought to use alt attacks whenever possible, or that there are alt attacks to begin with!). tl;dr WG dun fooked up! -

lolwtf Fail division and low tier CV appreciation thread
Aotearas replied to Aotearas's topic in General Discussion
Wasn't that changed when WG stopped giving tier V ships preferential MM and only tier IV or lower get +/-1 MM? It used to be that the first two ships of a line get preferential MM (which included the tier V CV as their line starts at IV) but iirc that rule got abandoned in favour for a unified protected bracket in the low tiers which tier V ships of any class don't benefit from. -
lolwtf Fail division and low tier CV appreciation thread
Aotearas replied to Aotearas's topic in General Discussion
Pretty sure tier V CVs can see tier VII ships anyway (been a while since I last played a low tier CV so I might be wrong though), but the game has a soft cap of +1 MM for CV tiers so it should only ever see a tier VI max CV in a double CV game. Not sure if divisioning up with another equal tier non-CV messes that rule up (though I'd guess no from personal experience, I most definately NEVER saw a CV two tiers higher than the one in my division!), but I know for a fact that faildivisions with higher/lower tier ships messes up MM, ergo I put the blame on the obvious faildivision. At the very least, that is an issue that WG can easily solve by simply limiting divisions to the same tier and possibly fix any derivative MM hickups as a side effect. And get rid of that asinine artificially enforced skillgap between low and mid tier CVs. -

If you can't see how screwed up this is balance wise given what I just explained, both for the teams and the Bogue that got sucked into this mess because of the enemy faildivision, then I can't help you understand the issue! I can only hope you're never going to be in charge of any balancing whatsoever. -

I typically recommend playing cruisers first since they're pretty adaptable and teach a lot of good habits (read: brutally punish bad habits). All in all it's for you to decide which you like though I can say the US and IJN cruiser lines are probably the easiest to get into with quite strong ships all around that make for a smooth learning curve (IJN can be a bit tricky as it does the jump to heavy cruisers quite early at tier V). I do recommend playing the common classes (cruisers, destroyers and battleships) at least to tier V. For one that means you get a decent outlook on what you might prefer playing (though I still recommend diversifying and lot only play a specific class/line of ships) and the second, and arguably most important, reason is that you get a feel of how each of those classes play like. Particularily helpful is that playing a specific ship class conversely also teaches you how to play against it. Experiencing firsthand what works and what doesn't can be directly translated into countermeasures to use against the enemy. As a good example: an experienced DD player will be able to predict where the enemy DDs are going, which ships they're most likely to target and where you should expect an ambush. Seeing how devastating getting caught pants down by a DD is (a couple torps will sink even full health ships at most tiers) knowing how DDs play, how DD players think let's you predict and easily evade possible attacks which is an invaluable help ingame.
