But, as I said, using offensive smokes is a high risk/low reward strategy that yields minimal damage against heavily armoured targets, so if you actually want to do serious damage forget about the guns altogether and play it as a very effective torpedo boat, with perhaps a few rare exceptions..

Yes, because higher tier players haven't learnt to torpedo smoke clouds, light them up with radar or just charge you down and obviously the faster cool-down on radar won't change things one iota. Just my opinion, but at higher tiers it's a high risk/low reward tactic. And back to my original point, if that is what USN DD are for then why is the T9 Fletcher essentially the same as the worst performing T5 DD (Nicholas) with a slight buff to rate of fire and a few more HP?

Remember that USN DD guns don't really change after T5, you get a slightly better rate of fire but you're against enemies with much bigger health pools and far stronger fire resistance. They're useful against IJN DD on the fairly rare occasions when you can engage them without getting wrecked by supporting CA (and even BB), but as a reliable source of damage against CA/BB you're pretty much wasting your time with them.

Can I suggest WG urgently offers some very generous rewards for playing xyz cruiser games, because at the moment the MM is absolutely horrible, in fact I'd suggest putting the new IJN BB armour model on hold until the current KM BB plague has passed and look at it in a later PT, because at the moment almost every player is either in IJN BB for the reward, or a KM BB for a preview. Game #1, Kawachi, 2 minute + wait for a 9 BB + 3 DD game. Game #2, Wickes, 5 BB, 5 DD, 2 CA. Game #3, St Louis, 5 BB, 4 DD, 3 CA. Game #4, not happening on this PT cycle.

Question for the OP, your changes would be a buff to BB and a nerf to CA, do you agree? Assuming that you agree, BB numbers were already a problem before the KM line came in and are now bordering on game-breaking, in what way would you like to see BB nerfed to counter your suggested buff?

Plus a point blank range gunfight is exactly where Benson excels, you have an insane rate of fire, better damage per shell, vastly quicker turning turrets and the only downside (orbital ballistics) doesn't matter at that range. Believe it or not I found a Kagero that thought a 3km fight with a Fletcher was a good idea the other day.

What are they doing? I don't see the buff to radar as a big issue, there are few enough radar CA at higher tiers that it shouldn't matter greatly, am I missing something?

Looks like a fairly minor patch, cruisers are getting a smallish buff against DD and CV but in terms of balance that's about it. Curiously the developers are encouraging players to use the IJN BB line, which seems odd as there aren't any obvious changes that would affect them. Possibly they don't want everyone in the KM BB's, but in that case why the IJN BB line rather than USN BB, or any other line?

T8-10 BB numbers are probably being held down by USN/IJN players grinding lower down the German line, even then I've not seen a game with less than 5 BB for ages, but 2-3 DD games.are fairly common.

Just had a game with one cruiser on our team, enemy were luckier, they got 2.

DD can at least make BB's life difficult, and the CA player was probably playing it because he finds BB boring.

Is it because BB players have learnt that WG listen to their whining whilst everyone else gets ignored?

Took the Fletcher out for the first time in a while and MM seems to be extremely favourable at the the moment, IIRC I was top tier every time in 6 or so games today. My hypothesis is that thanks to KM BB there's a lot of T7 and lower BB in the game, which is dragging anything that isn't a BB into the games including extremely formidable USN T9 DD. Mr Fletcher is going to be busy tomorrow.

I'm not in favour of a hard cap, but there definitely seem to be too many BB about, so why not go down the IJN DD route and nerf BB (or buff CA)?

Enemies can turn and at very close ranges it is actually quite difficult to aim.

Where I think friendly fire is the biggest problem is at the low tiers with suicide range torpedoes and very rapid reloads. With high tier ships you're firing from distance and can take the time to decide if the risk to friendlies is acceptable, with low tier ships you're likely 2 km from the ship you want to sink with a good chance that there's a friendly ship 2 km beyond him, you simply do not have the choice not to fire, it's either shoot or sink.

I'm curious as to how effective cruiser torpedoes actually are in the game, I can't imagine that there are many (if any) torpedo hits scored by them in most games.

My point is that the stats reflect the very high skill of the players, being a reward ship for reaching rank #1 on 3 consecutive occasions, and are not useful in comparison to the general population. If you have a look at the Flint's top players on Warships Today you'll see that they all have similar or better performing tier 7 cruisers.
