Took me a while to figure it out but here's what works for me lately.
Step 1. Pray that the match has CV's.
Step 2. Find the highest ranking (preferably German) BB's in your team.
Step 3. Stick close to them like a Remora does to a Shark.
They will (hopefully) focus on enemy BB's so they don't take you out while you provide AA, obliterate DD's that come close and citadel the rest as they flee in terror
.
I also find the hydro more useful than the AA boost to wipe the smile out of sneaky DD's hiding in smoke, since if you stick close to the BB and use the fighter plane the combined AA support is enough.
