    OnkelE's Gunboat Destroyer Guide

Great stuff! Every captain of a gunboat destroyer should be familiar with this post.

WARNING! I'M ON MY SOAPBOX! TL;DR A good video which explains to good players why they should appreciate Pensacola, and to the rest of us why we need to buff our gunnery skills. Thank You for posting it. Yes, it is a good video, for two reasons: 1) The author gives good explanations of how to play the Pensacola to its strengths, and how to avoid its weaknesses. 2) It refutes the myth that the Pensacola is a "bad" ship, by demonstrating that in the right circumstances it can be the star of the show. (*) I think that the Pensacola is a good ship, I have it already fully researched, and enough silver to buy 20 of them. So, why don't I get it? Because I don't have the skills of Capt_Rye! He makes playing the ship look easy because he is a good captain. At the end of the video, Capt_Rye says of his impressive performance in the battle: "Anybody can do it!". In fact, he says it twice. Well, he's being over optimistic I'm afraid. The key to his success was his gunnery skills. He achieved 70 hits by main battery out of 144 shots fired (48.6% hit rate). Those 70 hits yielded 12 citadels - about 1 in 6 of all hits. This is way beyond my league, and I suspect way beyond most average players. I have tried Pensacola myself on the PT server on two different patches, and I found it difficult, mainly because my gunnery isn't up to the minimum required standard for the ship. Hopefully, I may be good enough in the future (I like to think so) but not at the moment. The same battle in a parallel universe with an average captain in charge (me) (*) The "Right Circumstances"

    Demolition Expert

@Sonic_157 I am no expert - this is purely my personal opinion as to what I feel comfortable in taking as the 4th row skill. Bogatyr - AFT for the range. You can outrange BBs with this, and your main cruiser enemy (St Louis) Sveitlana - AFT again. The range is welcome, but don't forget you need to take the alternate guns as well. Kirov - DE. The AP is great, but this also gives you more HE firepower. AFT doesn't give you much more AA value. Budyonny - DE. It makes the guns excellent in all situations. Again the AA can be improved, but you'll never be a Cleveland. Shchors - I cheat. I have both DE and AFT. AFT does help a little bit, and since your turning circle is almost that of a Yamato, planes are a serious threat. (But if i had to choose, I would go with DE. 12 guns, High RoF, playing to your strengths) As I said - it is only what I PERSONALLY feel most comfortable with. I'm no expert. Top players will possibly tell you something completely different. (Edited for typos)

    Proposal: IJN Kako

I completely agree. I love the Kuma! I replayed Furutaka recently, and did MUCH better in it than the first time that I played it (though still rather average). I don't dislike the ship any more, but I really wish that her guns had a bit more range, now that she regularly has to face Königsberg and Kirov at tier 5. I am replaying Aoba at the moment, and after a slow start I am getting better. It is a good ship, but I never feel comfortable in vessels which only have a few guns - even if they are as good as Aoba's. You need good gunnery to make your shots count - and my gunnery is slightly below average. A handsome and likeable ship, nonetheless. Kuma, Furutaka, Aoba are all regular ships, though. I have kept them all. What I want is a tier 5/6 premium cruiser, so that I can (re)train captains in her.
  6. I thought that the "Kamikaze R" event was excellent. Even with limited playing time, and decidedly average skills, I managed to complete the weekly targets in 5/6 days. Hopefully, I'll be able to do the same in the new event. I am not bothered about the ship prizes - which I think will probably have a cost in diamonds which is out of my reach anyway. If I can get a similar reward in terms of silver and flags as the "Kamikaze R" event then I will be completely satisfied. (I did actually win a "Kamikaze R" destroyer, but since I am appallingly bad in the similar "Minekaze" I have never played it) Well done, Wargaming!

One thing that you could do is to sign up for play on the Public Test server. (It is not active at the moment, but is often made available before major patches, such as 0.5.5). Usually you will be able to play any ship that you want. You could play the successor to the Cleveland - the Pensacola - for example. I tried out Pensacola on 0.5.5. To my surprise, I loved the guns. I was aware that it was fragile so I played carefully. I got tormented be enemy aircraft carriers though, so I was greatly put off the ship. (I don't get this trouble when in the Cleveland!)

    Suck as battleship

Yes. That is my understanding of how the figure is calculated. Notice how dispersion increases after you upgrade the Fire Control on a ship to get longer range. But you are right - I think that the dispersion model could/should be improved.

    Premium Ship Review: Ishizuchi (2.0)

Thank You for this review. I would like a suitable crew trainer for my Japanese captains, but after reading your review I have ruled out the Ishizuchi. Now, in the "Would I Recommend?" summary at the end, "The Lert Box" says: "No. Not unless you absolutely must have a Japanese crewt rainer [sic] and can't afford an Atago." Well, I actually HAVE an Atago. I discovered the hard way that I am not good enough for tier 8 (never mind higher tiers). At the time of day that I can usually play WoWS (Late evening), there is normally a shortage of ships for tier 9/10 battles and tier 8 ships get dragged in to them. Consequently, battles for me personally in this ship are sadly a waste of time, though for better players the Atago is a wonderful ship of course. What I really need is a tier 5/6 premium for the IJN. I'd like a cruiser, because that is what I play.

    IJN Tone

See thread "Some interesting info from RU", post #2738. http://forum.worldofwarships.eu/index.php?/topic/31444-some-interesting-info-from-ru/page__st__2720__pid__995523#entry995523 From a recent Q & A Session: QUOTE 4. Please explain what is going on with Tone. Will she have a unique gameplay due to her many planes or will she just be another cruiser with only one floatplane? Can we expect her to be released this year? A. Currently, I can't explain anything. Her gameplay is shaping to be complex; at the moment, we don't have a clear understanding what to do with the ship; we're not working actively on its development. Bug-EU didn't get the 2x XP event

Great! I'm at least one Captain short for my Russian ships - this is the ideal opportunity to start training the free 3-point Captain that Wargaming gave us a few weeks ago. .

    Weather , your veiws.

Please excuse me asking a stupid question, but this needs to be crystal clear: When the cyclone hits, and maximum detection range is reduced to 8km, does this affect the penalty for firing your guns? So if you and the enemy are 10km apart in a cyclone, then a friendly ship detects the enemy, you can see him but he cannot see you. If you then open fire, does the enemy detect you as usual?

    Whats your favourite ship ?:D

Good:- Both good AP ammo AND good HE ammo- High RoF so you can easily switch ammo as required, or just keep pumping out the hurt on the enemy- Great firing arcs and tight dispersion of the shells, so that you can consistently hit the target, even at range.- Very good range (16.6km with upgrade)- Quick turning turrets, so you can take on DDs pretty well, or both dodge and fight at the same time- Best armour of Russian cruisers in tiers 1-8.Facing bow-on to target you can tank other cruisers shells, while still having six guns facing the enemy. Meanwhile, your shells WILL be hurting THEM.- Fast (35 kts) Bad:- Handles poorly: Turning circle is big (710m) and rudder shift time is slow- Poor concealment (13.1km stock)- Mediocre AA defence- so-so survivability (30,800 HP with hull upgrade). Upgraded Cleveland is 35,200. - You have to get past Kirov first ( I like Kirov, but she divides opinion quite strongly. Some hate her)

    Sharks

The crew of USS Indianapolis allegedly suffered from shark attacks. From wikipedia... Her sinking led to the greatest single loss of life at sea in the history of the U.S. Navy. On 30 July 1945, after delivering parts for the first atomic bomb to the United States air base at Tinian, the ship was torpedoed by the Imperial Japanese Navy submarine I-58, sinking in 12 minutes. Of 1,196 crewmen aboard, approximately 300 went down with the ship. The remaining 900 faced exposure, dehydration, saltwater poisoning, and shark attacks while floating with few lifeboats and almost no food or water. The Navy learned of the sinking when survivors were spotted four days later by the crew of a PV-1 Ventura on routine patrol. Only 316[4] or 317[5] survived. "after delivering the first atomic bomb..." Poignant.

    Whats your favourite ship ?:D

Favourites are Budyonny, Phoenix, Nürnberg and Königsberg Honourable mention to Murmansk and Kuma (I've sold all of the ships that I didn't like, except the Wyoming. It was a horror story for me. I keep it as a reminder. Whenever I am having struggles with a ship I say to myself "Well, at least it is not as bad as the Wyoming Experience")

Why 5.5 gets delayed for EU

Let me guess . . . you are going to vote "Leave"? ON TOPIC: Is this the patch that is going to take even longer than usual to download - but once in place will make future patching quicker?

    AOBA

A public shout of thanks to Barkyro! As he promised up-thread, he met up with me in a division earlier this evening and very gently gave me playing advice which I greatly appreciated. We were joined in division by Aotearas, who was very helpful and also fully deserves a big "Thank You" . Two top guys, and fine players!

    AOBA

That's most kind of you! Thank you very much indeed! I have just joined the "forumites" channel using the password (the one that begins with "p"). I have never used it before. I will monitor the channel and contact you when I see your name appear in the list.

    AOBA

This thread has arrived at just the right time! As you can see from my signature, I have recently begun to replay the Aoba. My first attempt at playing this ship (Autumn 2015) was not good. Before I started to replay Aoba I had 30 games in Furutaka, and that went rather well. My damage per game was 65% higher than the first time that I played it. I moved on to Aoba with confidence - but it has been horrible. Aoba is an "improved Furutaka", so it should not be THAT different, but I just cannot get the hang of it and I would welcome any suggestions for help. What I've done so far I've watched and re-watched the YT videos by Notser, Kenliero, Business6 & Ubiru. I've googled for playing tips (Everyone suggests keeping a narrow profile and using only the front guns when possible). I've tried hit-and-run, island ambushes, torpedo ambushes even (!) but results are very mediocre. In 8 games of the "replay", the best damage that I've scored is 27,909, with an average-per-game of only 22,029 (about 5k less than Furutaka). The EU server average for this ship is 28,181 (Warships Today), so every game is below par! I have only managed to survive 2 games, even though my team won 6 of them. Every game seems an uphill struggle, even though matchmaking has been very fair. Aoba is a lovely, handsome ship and I want to like her - but she just ain't working for me This is depressing.

Why 5.5 gets delayed for EU

I have the Nürnberg. It's one of my favourite ships in the game. Naturally, I would like to see it fixed so that it sits properly in the water. However, I realise that Wargaming have lots of things to do, so I was prepared to "cut them some slack". Until, that is, I saw that the Kirov had the same problem of sitting too high in the water AND THAT WAS BEING FIXED URGENTLY.

*APPLAUSE* +1 (except for the bit about the Iowa - which I don't have! )
