I don't care about their situational awareness. When I am spotted it is either intentionally or unintentionally. Intentionally if I open fire on a DD. I know which enemy ships are there so don't need PT. If there is an extra red DD there I did not expect, I need to get out of Dodge ASAP anyways. If I am spotted unintentionally, I know which ships are there and an extra DD. If I want to fight that DD I will, otherwise I get out of Dodge. So there is no situation where PT will make a difference to me. It just makes me nervous.

PT is useless in a DD as everyone will shoot at you. It just makes me nervous to see half the enemy ships are shooting at me.

Interestingly, I checked the season 3 leaderboard and it does have its fair share of gunboats in the top scorer list. So, it is at least also my relative inexperience with gunboats that causes my point of view

Indeed I was talking about ranked. Also I generalised, there are oc many other factors at work, such as player skill and how comfortable you are with a boat. Do you play gunboats in ranked? I always feel relief when I see a Marceau in the enemy lineup.

Shooting DDs with BB? Blasphemy, to the Gulag! BBs only shoot BBs to maximise damage farming

The problem I have with very specialised DDs is they suck at general DD work. With general DD work I mean spotting (esp enemy DDs and around caps) fighting enemy DDs and contesting caps. These are essential contributions to the team and to victory. A TRB Yugumo cannot do any of these well. You cannot spot because you will die when spotted. Gunboats same thing: they cannot spot because their detect range is too long (except IJN gunboats). So effectively by playing a specialised DD you deprive your team of a generalist DD and thus put your team at a disadvantage and make victory less likely. I find UK DDs have the best utility and offer the best chance for victory. Pretty low detection, many smokes, defensive hydro, good guns and some mediocre torps make a very good all round package. A Yugumo makes me laugh, with TRB out loud rolling on the floor.

There is a huge difference in your utility with a Jutland or a TRB Yugumo, because in the Yugo you are a bit a one trick pony while the Jutland is a Swiss army knife. You can also be much more in the front in a Jutland, because you can smoke up 7 times during the battle. So that means only radar or long hydro will decloak you. Usually you have just 1 radar per cap to reckon with in ranked, so you bait radar and then have a minute of freedom. Those are all things a torp spammer can't do. It takes just 1 competent CV or DD to send you to port. I love red Yugos in ranked, they are food.

The steamrolls occur because too many players in high tiers have very limited understanding of good gameplay. Statistically, as much of half the games may thus have a significant skill imbalance between the teams. As a couple of players in one team make mistakes and die, that team quickly gets to 3 ships or more down and from that point on the imbalance escalates further rapidly. Especially if fe 2 DDs die on one team, effectively leaving that team blind.
