The tropical and combat one are both nice, but I honestly don't see a reason to not run the standard camo. It looks already nice. And I'm beyond the age where I play with dress-up dolls. I don't need ships for that either.

Operation Frontier - Why do people find it so hard?

Yesterday I saw a Bismarck, sole top tier BB on our team, go wide around A on shards, then come back up. By the time he was done, almost everyone was dead, he hadn't done anything, as noone was down there, he was full hp. He then steamed straight into the remaining enemy forces, ate a full spread of Kagero torps, before getting finished off by a few shots from god knows what. Unsurprisingly bottom of the score board, maybe got a couple thousand damage from the secondaries or so. So, I ask you, why do you think Ops are what makes players dumb? Just go into random battle. It's only a matter of time before you lose faith in humanity.

I'd say the ship performs in extremes, but that'd be wrong, because it performs pretty poor when MM screws you over and performs only decent when MM hands you a carrot. The ability of this ship to just fall flat on its face though is what pisses me off most. Other than that, eh... I usually don't go for silly bundles unless they have weeb stuff (bought both HSF and AL bundles), as I don't see much reason to spend money on an extra flag and an extra heap of dubloons, etc. If there wasn't the offer for 1 year of premium at 12k dubloons, I'd basically have dismissed this too, because what am I to do with 9 k dubloons? Buy all the Atago permacamos?

Submarine is a warship - New CV is a warplane

I think the issue there is that in WWII, gun battles either occurred when CVs were not available, or were rare compared to CV clashes. If we go back to the roots of WoWS and look at the Pacific navies, you'd basically be looking at aviation presence in pretty much everything that also had a BB present and wasn't a night battle. Certainly not the usual 5 BB, 3-4 CA, 3-4 DD per side action you see in this game in broad daylight. This much on "planned" gun battles.
  5. We won't get Kamikaze planes, but...
  6. So, seemingly Yuudachi got teased. Ready for the renewed poi spam in chat? Honestly, I feel like grabbing a bag of popcorn and watching how this'll turn out. Personally, I already said about Asashio that a premium Yuudachi at T8 with both consumables, T8 torps and 5 modules would be a more interesting ship, but I'm ready to let WG surprise me with how they balance this boat and how my fellow weebs will react if this thing turns out to be a pile of crap.

Submarine is a warship - New CV is a warplane

I mean, either in the current iteration are absolutely toxic and would have me quit this game if not properly fixed. And I pick CVs, not because of game mode, but because they had more influence on naval combat during the era than subs. CVs have a far greater legitimacy to be represented than subs and just because people don't like squadron view doesn't mean that subs are better. If I were to paint all bananas blue it still wouldn't mean cucumbers should be in the fruit salad instead. It just means I should find proper bananas that I didn't screw around with.

Fun for the event, but picking between this and the current iteration of yet-to-be-balanced CVs is like picking between plague and cholera.

    Akizuki advice?

A shell that does 1750k HE damage to a DD is a BB shell. A cruiser shell from a USN light cruiser is 2.2k HE alpha, resulting in hits for a bit over 700 per shell. That's 5 more shells of that type. It's even more of a difference in DD fights. The question is however not, how long does my DD hold out against sustained fire with and without SE perk. If you get continuously shot at, you die sooner or later anyway. But extra hp means that if you can avoid taking meaningless damage throughout the battle, the few times you eat the odd shell, it is far less punishing and wwhen you do use your hp tactically to engage in fights, you have more of it, maybe surviving on a sliver of hp instead of dying. Keepin mind, Akizuki is a large DD with a ton of hp. Still, SE will give it more than 10% of its hp additionally. This means lasting that much longer in fights. Meaning it's in straight up fights much better than BFT even and in cases where you just try to get out and eat a few shells, it's massively better than BFT. Competent CV will kill you anyway, because shooting one out of the torp wave still leaves 5-11 torp bombers to screw you over (5 in case of Independence, 11 in case of Hakuryu and Midway). And shooting down planes at all is sketchy, especially against something like T10 CVs. On the other hand, how often would it be useful to have IFHE and how often might an ally (or you) survive because the enemy died that much faster?

Submarine is a warship - New CV is a warplane

I-68/I-168 finished off USS Yorktown and sunk USS Hammann. That's two more ships sunk than the entire CV force of the IJN achieved in that battle.
  12. If you brawl a Gneisenau in Bayern you are basically hoping the Gneisenau is incompetent or distracted. Otherwise, no, you don't brawl Gneisenau in Bayern. Bayern is no less going to die than any other T6 BB that tries to 1v1 a competent Gneisenau. On the other side, a Kongou could likely beat a Gneisenau if the enemy player is dumb enough, thus we don't factor in incompetence for this. Then, a cruiser might brawl a BB with an objective, yes. But who cares? Typically, unless you were caught of guard (in which case, you have no real choice anyway), you can see it coming and just decide whether to kite, brawl or not. If I see a Nürnberg trying to brawl, I don't need to worry about some objective of his. That guy's likely either too dumb or too desperate and as long as I mind the torps, any BB at close range utterly annihilates a Nürnberg. Thus, there's often zero reason for a BB not to get closer, as long as they are aware of the torpedo threads. It is up to the cruiser to stay away. In this sense, BBs also exert area control through their presence, while staying away cedes ground. The only chance a cruiser could ever have in a brawl with Bs that overmatch would be to outrun the gun turrets at very close range. Which is possible, but by that point, the BB f-ed up massively.

    Akizuki advice?

DD AA is pointless, unless you have defAA consumable. If you are a BB, base AA is sometimes decent. Kii for example can shoot down stuff even without defAA and shreds planes if it goes full AA build doubling the AA dps from its 8x2 10 cm dual-purpose guns. But on DDs, these ships are small. At the very best, your main battery doubles as AA. Akizuki has great base AA dps for a DD, but even that is just half of the long-range dps the Kii packs and the Akizuki does not carry a metric f-ton of Chi-Type Bofors knock-offs as mid-range. DDs just are small ships and without the consumable to get the AA dps x4, the few guns they do have don't make a difference. Ergo, AFT is pointless for AA and you don't need extra range really. Not at the cost of IFHE. Without IFHE, the only thing you can hurt directly without issue is DDs and RN CLs. With IFHE you can hurt all cruisers except Moskva/Stalingrad and half the BBs. These 4 points are the difference between being able to straight up melt a Cleveland or have to rely on fires for the most part. AFT is only used as replacement for CE, when you want to be a complete jackass and make your ship into a light cruiser. Sucks when you are the only DD though. Also, DE is an interesting matter, because generally, you get 2 3 point skills. First is Survivability Expert, because hp is most important. Even on a DD this healthy. But second skill can go into: DE, gives +2% fire chance. Assuming you use both fire chance signals and IFHE, that boosts your fire chance from 3% to 5%. That's 40% more fires. Sounds like the largest gain, but keep in mind - DDs and cruisers care far less about fires than BBs. BFT, gives -10% reload or in other words +11% dpm. This is basically a straight up buff to shell output. With IFHE, I'd take this, because it's 11% more direct damage and 11% more fires. I'd personally take the universal usefulness and direct damage over the 29% difference in fire DoT. SI, gives one more consumable of each type. For Akizuki, smoke and engine boost. Even without the other two skills, Akizuki is a formidable gunboat already and a case could be made (and some made it in discussion with me) that one extra smoke to farm from and an extra engine boost on a slow ship like the Akizuki is overall quite useful. After all, theoretical dpm is nice, but having more smokes to use it is also great. Pick as you see fit. Theoretically, it won't matter till you get 17 points at earliest to pick a second 3 point perk. Or 19 point, if you take AR first.

Don’t buy PEF - she sucks hard

Apart from 2.0 sigma, some turret traverse and 4 seconds reload, PEF guns are worse than Kongou stock guns. Upgraded Kongou guns are just 2 seconds slower to reload, have still lower sigma, but better base dispersion and a better pen. The only reason PEF can beat a Kongou is because the Kongou bow is 19 mm. Other than that, yes, this is the reason certain people do not like the PEF much. Also, Myogi has improved stock Kongou guns, which basically are better than PEF in almost everything except number of guns (6 instead of 8).

    Akizuki advice?

Look at the date. This post was before the penetration was buffed. Things change over time. And the buff from 1/6 to 1/4 made IFHE not optional, but less pressing. You still should get it, as it allows you to penetrate most ships in the game, especially cruisers.

Prinz Eitel and Steel Monster popularity

If these guns are ok, then you have low standards for T6. And Hood is a way more solid ship than this piece of trash. It may have lackluster pen and dpm too, but not this much below the rest. As is, PEF has basically T7 AA, T5 armour scheme (except extremities plating, which is T6), speed that is hard to classify (there are faster ships at T6, but also at T5 and T4, while slower ships exist even T10) and guns that are inbetween T5 and T4. If it was just about the ship, I wouldn't even bother grinding. But hey, there's easy steel and I basically bought the Steel Prinz bundle, because apart from a ton of signals, credits and other stuff, it basically gives me an easier time grinding all the stuff, is the campaign of 4k steel plus an extra 2019 steel, so 6k steel (basically one Ranked season less, if I was to Rank out), the Prinz gets refunded in doubloons which I can invest into whatever and the 9k doubloons are 3/4 of a year of premium.

    Last Prinz directive

Pretty much. Grinding out 24 million on a F2P account is a lot of effort. Personally, I wouldn't be able to pull that, given work, but I know F2P friends and I can only hope they can get it done. Not to mention, it needs 6 different nations, so even if you have a Missouri or such, good luck getting that crap done in 5 more nations without your credit grinder. On the other hand, with my premium account, a little stockpile of Wyvern signals and a good few dozen premiums of different nations will likely not have too much trouble. Also, if you buy PEF, you can do 4 out of 6 just by grinding 4 million in PEF. So, I'd just need to play enough games in that (or div up for T6 op farming) and then some in Kobayashi Kii/Musashi and whatever I fancy for last nation (Cossack, Hood, Nelson likely) and I'm done. Maybe one or two afternoons. However, assuming a game without premium at mid-tiers gives you 200k on average for decent performance, non-premium, 4 million is 20 games. That is maybe 200-400 minutes, which is 3-7 hours or so. For 6 nations, that is 18-42 hours. Even over the course of a week or two, this can pretty much take on the time investment of a job, in exchange for a crappy T6 premium. Because while people argue about the power level of the ship, it's generally seen as somewhere between mediocre and balanced and uncompetitive trash. If you got Warspite from the British Arc, that was a way better reward already. One might argue about the steel and Mighty Prinz campaign, but that is then behind its own grind (though it generally is not much of one and will just flood the MM with Hatsus, Nürnbergs, Dallasses (correct plural? Idk...), Icaruses and Normandies. It's easy to see how much of a difference it makes whether you pay or not, to the point that I'd say, if I didn't have a job, I'd maybe try, but as long as I have disposable income, I either buy PEF for the steel (rest isn't worth it. Ship itself certainly isn't) or I enjoy my holidays and come back in January. Or in Q2 of 2019, by which they hopefully gotten around to balancing new CVs. But this is not a grind worth it for the ship. If this doesn't look tailored to the F2P crowd, then I'd say because it isn't. It is tailored around paying customers, especially the ones who just say "f- it" and buy the bundle for steel, because they want steel (the ship's just the cherry ontop).

  21. Colorado overmatches Hipper and can delete it in 2-4 salvos up close. T6 BBs except WV should load HE if the Hipper knows how to angle. But yes, turning around and drawing out the fight is the best option in any BB.
  22. Doesn't matter. They cannot run you down and torp you. Gneisenau is basically as fast as Hipper.Even if you were kiting them at 5 km, torps would run out before reaching you and they get pummelled by stock secondaries. Nevermind if you secondary spec that you can stay at 6 km and still have 2 km of range to play with. Basically the smartest thing the Hipper at that point could do is either do a turn if he can make sure that you won't be able to fire AP at him in time to punish him, or stop and reverse, hoping you get beyond secondary range.
