Psst. Poland wasn't an independent country until 1918, so they had reasons for having no pre-Dreadnoughts. *Very* pre-dreadnought Battleships offer little by way of interest as they're all quite similar and Mikasa like - four big guns of 12 or 13 inch calibre, a million secondaries, low speed - and that's not much fun in WoWs*. But the protected/armoured cruisers of the era do offer lots of fun - who doesn't like St Louis? - and ships like Averof, Olympia, the original Scharnhorst, Blucher, Defence, Black Prince, Monmouth - all have historic appeal. * I'd pay for a Canopus, King Edward VII or Lord Nelson.

The Allies started WW2 with more ships, for sure, but the Axis ones were generally superior 1 vs 1. The US and the RN especially had both spent most of the 1920s and 30s trying to avoid a naval arms race, and so when WW2 broke out they had many examples of treaty-compromised or slightly old-fashioned designs in play. The most up-to-date "allied" navy at the outbreak of WW2 was probably the French one. Worcester was the HE spamming scourge back in the day. And Flint was truly fearsome at its peak. But Smolensk really did take all that to a whole new - and very silly - level. I don't mind Monarch. There certainly have been BBs called that - my grandfather served on one! - and it is just a KGV with 15 inch guns, which is very Royal Navy. It's not a real oddity like that next dockyard ship, Marlborough. I don't know *where* they got that from, but I wish they'd take it back - it bears absolutely no resemblance to anything the RN ever thought about building. It's like some supersized version of Belfast and Plymouth.

Yes, because there were many splendid design studies and actual planned ships whose construction was interrupted by events. I'm not too keen on some of WGs more speculative attempts, though.
-
I like the Premium ones. I don't like the silver ones. The silver ones combine all the worst features of the French and British battleships - guns which are unreliable, armour which won't keep out the same calibre of shell the ship fires - and adds a whole new level of wonkiness with SAP.

Nice. Overall I think WG have made the right decision. It's arguably OK to add crew if the vehicle is generic - a Sherman Tank, a Spitfire, whatever - but ships are *very* specific and there's a very strong risk of offending people who might have a genuine familial connection to that particular vessel.

New Convoy game mode is a bit boring and a sort of co-op
invicta2012 replied to SaltyLord's topic in General Discussion
The spawn points need addressing, for sure. There's one map where the attacking CV always spawns in the same place and everyone knows where it is. It's in range of defending BBs from where they spawn and alternative cover is a very long way away. It either has to hide behind the nearest rock and gets rushed by an enemy DD or cruiser or run for it and hope the enemy CV is the one person in WoWs who doesn't know the spawn location yet. Either way, it's a very bad map. -
Yes but they won't overmatch the citadel armour and the citadels of Tier II cruisers are much better protected, and sited, than the citadel of Tier IIIs.

Is it worth buying De Zeven Provincien for 9000 doubloons?
invicta2012 replied to Ocsimano18's topic in General Discussion
Ochakov is very fragile but it does have better alpha. DZP lacks alpha and carry potential. It's an interesting ship to play and a good trainer for the Dutch line but they are very, very limited ships, and it shows at Tier VIII where you often don't get good results with any of her weapons. -
New Convoy game mode is a bit boring and a sort of co-op
invicta2012 replied to SaltyLord's topic in General Discussion
There's plenty of game modes to appeal to players who want a serious competitive challenge. This is something different. It is a scenario, so the point is to work through the permutations. Repetition is a given (and part of the appeal). If it won't keep "us" interested then that's OK - sail on to something else, old man, I'm delighted to see WG making content like this, it's much requested. As to the other ideas - they're already in the game (or have been) and they all work pretty well. I'd be up for some random bot attackers - torpedo boats, that sort of thing - and perhaps the ability to pick up an allied defender or two, as well heals/buffs for the defenders/allied ships, all things we have in regular operations. Support CVs would work well here, too... -
Player sticks to the tiers they're good at - Sealclubber! Player pushes up to higher Tiers, doesn't do so well - Noob! There's always a skill ceiling when you're learning a game, but WoWs has never been very good at helping people past it, and has always tended to suggest the solution can be bought from the shop.

You can only citadel a Weymouth with HE from range. The Citadel roof is thin. But she has a 51mm sloped turtleback and most of the citadel is underwater. You're not citadelling that any time soon, it's every bit as good as the armour on a high tier German cruiser, and better at the short range of a Tier II battle. Compared to the Tier III and IV, it's very well protected. Weymouth Caledon

As predicted, cheat torps/subs get a boost
invicta2012 replied to SodaBubbles's topic in General Discussion
I was hoping that was the Royal Navy gimmick, like their Destroyers, allowing for ripple firing fun. I can't see how WG have made any decision about sub torps as we've been testing them while they were broken. That said, I've played them since the hotfix and I think they are *way* too strong. -
WG actually improved this by removing Premium consumables and showering everyone with free camos at every opportunity. The main reasons people leave are: 1 - Low Tier CVs 2 - Not understanding the complex elements of the game and how they work. And that's because the game doesn't teach them. For example: ever tried to citadel a Tier II cruiser? It's not at all easy. Something like Weymouth or Chikuma has a low citadel with a turtleback. The game encourages everyone to get involved and brawl but doesn't teach them that when you hit Tier III you'll be sailing a tin can like Caledon or Tenryu where most of the ship is Citadel. Hilarity and player frustration results. The same applies with BBs - their accuracy is so *awful* at lower Tiers that it's trying to aim a fairground rifle. You could be an Olympic trap shooting gold medallist and still not be able to hit a DD with a South Carolina. Secondaries do little and so BB players learn to be afraid of HE spam, torpedoes, and to hang at the back hoping for a lucky snipe. And we all know about CVs and lack of counter play. While there are some ships at Tier IV with reasonable AA there are very few at III. I was watching a SeaRaptor review of Komsomolets, the Soviet IV Carrier, where he said CVs should start at Tier V - couldn't agree more, really. Even the Komso, which is clearly meant to reduce the constancy of CV attacks at lower Tiers, is too strong against enemies with no defence. (Oh, and then there are the clubber boats. I hear Emden has a magic secret which makes it invincible, and there's the usual outbreaks of Clemson divisions).

[Poll] How do you like new "Convoy" game mode?
invicta2012 replied to Leo_Apollo11's topic in General Discussion
Escort CVs changed the Battle of the Atlantic completely. There was now no mid-Atlantic gap where submarines were safe from air detection. And as for convoy escorts - take a look at Operation Pedestal and PQ17. -
Needs some tuning. CVs are a bit too powerful with small teams fighting in a narrow space. Kaga has too many planes to be denied and the Soviet one is an endless stream of unkillable torpedo bombers. People are bringing what they think will be the right ships for a fun brawl - Massa, Tirpitz - when really air power rules the day. A competent CV and Dutch Cruiser + DD mate with a smoke screen will wipe the floor with the opposing team. Like all of these small modes, it can get lopsided very quickly, too, and I'm sure instawin strategies have already been devised.

No-one ever sent a Bismarck or a Tirpitz, Scharnhorst or Roma out to sink transport ships! Or to defend a convoy either.... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_battle_for_Convoy_PQ_17

Seems to be quite good at it, so who can blame them?

Carnot. What do you think about the ship performance?
invicta2012 replied to bEtHeNs's topic in General Discussion
I've seen some positive online reviews rather than the usual "hard pass" dreck. What people seem to like are her French BB like qualities - speed, good forward firing angles - and her AP. Her dispersion is one of those French qualities you may not like, but vive la difference! -
Vigenère mission chain: a possible hidden code?
invicta2012 replied to Estaca_de_Bares's topic in General Discussion
There you go. http://www.prc68.com/I/pdf/SCB108JVMF.pdf Not sure it helps - what I know about this is ripped from the pages of "Cryptonomicon".... -

I was reading a WW2 pamphlet on the nature of Cryptography in Jules Verne novels, would that help? q -

Nautilus wasn't always a Nuclear sub. She was also an earlier sub with a pair of six inch guns. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V-boat#V-5_and_V-6—Narwhal_and_Nautilus (sounds fun, too, as a WoWs ship would go) -
Honestly? Save your money and grind out the Silver Tier VIII line ships, then buy permacamos for the ones yor like. It's not that Tier VIII Premiums are bad, but there are so many keepers in the silver lines that you will enjoy - Bismarck, Richelieu, North Carolina, Lightning, Edinburgh, Baltimore, Mogami, Le Fanta, Akizuki - and it's worth getting these first. It's also worth noting that you'll have more fun in a ship that doesn't get you killed quickly. Tier VIII cruisers like Mainz are very fun, but you're better off practising that playstyle a bit lower down the tiers with a Nurnberg or Munchen. That said, if you must... BBs: Massachusetts, Tirpitz, Lenin Cruisers: Atago, Prinz Eugen Destroyers: Lo Yang, Kidd, Cossack

Get rid of the Bl@@dy stupid mercy rule in co-op
invicta2012 replied to Axilian_1's topic in General Discussion
It's the same with Operations. Yes, you do know how it goes but there are enough variables (RNG, your team) to make it entertaining. And you *can* do daft things you couldn't do elsewhere. Ending a game of Newport by rushing an Izumo with a secondary build Weser is always, always funny. -
Given that it was an export design and that WG no longer cares about who had the ship first (hello Dido) it could be any number of things.
