Mines - yay, nay, or simply blancmange?

I think they're called "Destroyers" and they're very good at most things. Every Royal Navy destroyer from the M Class onwards was capable of laying or sweeping mines (although guns or torpedo tubes might need to be shipped in compensation for the additional weight). So are torpedoes. I'm sure every DD player has sent speculative torpedoes into a cap, or into a channel down which enemy ships are likely to sail. I can see Mines being a very strong surface weapon in deterring pursuits / pushes, if correctly deployed. For balance reasons I wouldn't want them to be permanent, they should be detectable, avoidable through a reduction in speed, and minefields shouldn't be stackable on a map location. WG's reasoning was always that they were too much of a hazard because of the risk of friendly fire - that's gone away, although a friendly ship pushing through a minefield should defuse/remove it. There could also be ASW mines, too..... that might add a little drama to the dull undersea world we have at the moment. To be honest it's a real-world mechanic which fits in the game, has possibilities for play and counter play from all classes, and most of the downsides disappeared when friendly fire was removed. Which is clearly why it's being ignored. :)

Italian tech line DD in PvE

I have the Curtatone (nuts. All Tier II DDs are ridiculously OP), Turbine and Maestrale. They're very like the Pan Euro line. Unremarkable guns, weak torpedoes. Speed and smoke gimmick is a demo (according to WG) and to me they commit an unforgivable Destroyer sin - if you YOLO a BB, your torpedoes won't sink it. I have the feeling this is *another* line with a mid-tier sag.
  3. CVs are in the game. Subs are not. It's easier to petition WG not to introduce something broken (and boring).

Dutch Cruisers - Airstrike - Respectful request for help.

Yes, they do. Their torpedo and airstrike dodging skills are exceptional. This is why I gave up on the line and no longer have DZP. It just doesn't work in PVE. Why would I want to take out a half-finished gimmick boat when there are so many other, better options? Well.... I've always thought of it as something you do after you've set a fire with your main guns. That way you have a chance of getting several permafires. But your guns are only OK-ish at setting fires, and with the bots able to dodge airstrikes for fun, it doesn't often work. It's not a very flexible line and I think WG wants it that way. Personally I'd like a choice of bomb drop patterns (wide/tight) with a change in the number of bombs and their pen value for each setting.

    Many have gone

Massa's problem is being reasonably quick with reasonably long range secondaries in an MM spread where there are now loads of 30kt BBs with 12km secondaries. The rate of Secondary powercreep at higher Tiers is now so great that my Jean Bart is more about her MBRB and AA than her secondaries, because there are plenty of ships with better ones.
  6. Subs have returned to testing today! They're still rubbish!

    Submarines coming tomorrow......

Just came across a Salmon in a game. Still boring AF to play against. Ping ping ping. Completely ignored it.

    Many have gone

That is a factor for me, for sure. At least we know Naval Warfare of the kind shown in WoWs won't be coming back any time soon, I'm not sure I could play a tank based game at the moment....

    Poll: Canarias or Dido?

I'm not sure she does, tbh. Mysore does very similar things with the benefit of a smoke screen. Canarias's advantages - high speed and a bigger gun calibre - are pretty marginal.

    Italian DDs

Having given up on Euro DDs, Italian Battleships, Dutch cruisers and feeling no inclination to play Chumphon from the PA cruisers it would be disappointing to find the Italian DD line another mid-tier snorefest. I'm hoping for something more entertaining from the Tier VI and VIII, but that does principally mean a ship which can do the intended job of its class,

    British cruiser improved acceleration

Try and slot Propulsion Mod 1 in Slot 4 on a British Cruiser or DD. You can't, it's baked in. Little White Mouse also reports that most British Cruisers and DDs don't lose so much speed in a turn as other lines (it's explained in -depth in her review of Belfast'43).

Is Marco Polo fun ship to play?

You can always put MBM3 in Slot 6 on Marco to bring her reload down to a very normal 31.7s, Adrenaline Rush on the Captain will mean you'll have a 29-30 standard reload most of the time, and if the slower turret traverse bugs you then add Grease The Gears. I enjoy playing Marco, I think she has most of the criteria for a good co-op BB, such as 30 knot+ speed, 406mm guns, generally serviceable armour (bow tanking possible) - her one problem is a vulnerability to torpedoes, so consider taking Vigiilance or Torp Lookout System 1.

    Italian DDs

I think that's pretty much true of all DDs, though. And I'm not wholly convinced about the Italian ones yet... I was trying Turbine yesterday and noticed that although I was getting kills and doing damage, I was also taking more torpedo hits than usual, because of the silly ranges you have to close to in order to get your guns into play. Compared to ships like Clemson and Wakeful it didn't feel Overpowered at all, especially with the anaemic torpedo performance.

    Ita DDs (finally)

Absolutely, especially as the war continues and becomes more about survival than moral values. Things which were considered unacceptable in the Med in early WW2 (Anthony Miers ordering the shooting of soldiers in the water after sinking a troopship) were fair game in the Pacific War. I've posted links to the videos of the aftermath of the Battle of Bismarck Sea, which show Allied aircraft strafing lifeboats full of Japanese soldiers... apparently people stood up and applauded when the newsreels were shown in Cinemas at the time. On that note I recently came across this YT video about the same battle. Remarkable quotes in the comments section from a Japanese man whose father was a survivor from one of those lifeboats. )

    Ita DDs (finally)

The Italian Navy was extremely innovative at the time too, with their mine-laying frogmen, charioteer torpedoes and explosive filled motor boats. None of which come under the Queensberry rules. But as for the British fighting fair... the motto of the people who built the British Empire was "unleash the rotters!". Absolutely *anything* went if it meant a victory.

    Ita DDs (finally)

They were pretty much on equal terms with the Royal Navy destroyers of the time - including the vulnerability to attack by dive-bombers. Their problems were largely tactical (the British could keep cruisers at sea, the RM couldn't - the British had radar, searchlights and night-fighting expertise, the RM didn't - and the British had broken the Italian Codes). This sort of thing was the result: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_the_Duisburg_Convoy - DD convoy escorts coming up against radar-equipped Light Cruisers and coming off worst.

2 x New Ships: Aquila and San Diego

It's the point at which I stopped playing them. YMMV, of course, but I found he wasn't as fun as other Tier VIIIs. I wouldn't say he's a bad ship but you have so much choice at Tier VIII - would I pick Charlie M over Mogami, Hipper, Baltimore, Edinburgh, Tallinn? Not really. (and that's before we think of Premiums).

2 x New Ships: Aquila and San Diego

San Diego looks poor, to be honest. MBRB does not make a bad ship good (ask Charles Martel about that) and overall the concept looks a bit underwhelming. Aquila could be fun but I wouldn't shell out on a Tier VIII CV especially for PVE.
  19. Did Axis Vs Allies ever make it to Live? I thought they realised that it was hopelessly unbalanced and shelved it?

I hope that Dasha is OK and return soon <3

Perhaps they've set her to work trying to explain the new Spotting Range rules through the medium of dance?

    Unsportsmanlike conduct

Some of those aren't simple to play, even in Co-op. Saipan and Sanzang are not the most efficient (relying on slow, steady attack runs to deliver heavy payloads). Ark Royal can also seem really awkward if you haven't learned how to give her torps a proper lead (and it seems as if the OP hasn't). Her slow planes will also be a burden in Co-op as you'll get two shots to three from all other carriers. Kaga would be the best place to start, tbh - Graf works in co-op because of her fast planes the KM CVs have all manner of weaponry weirdness going on, Kaga is just a decent CV.

    Equiping my Dido

The point about Heavy HE is that there is no downside for a ship with Dido's main battery calibre. It boosts your damage and doesn't affect your concealment. My Krasny Krym, btw, which is a very similar ship, has Heavy HE, SE, AR, IFHE and Top Grade Gunner (rather than CE). This is because the KK's concealment is so goddam awful that there is no point even trying to buff it. Dido, of course, has her ickle DD smoke screens.
  23. That's Edgar, I think. In testing.

New Ships — 0.11.3 Closed Testing (DB 291)

Let's not forget the monetisation side, here. Invoking the name of a historic ship is likely to generate more interest (and sales/resource expenditure) than something made up. I think the public are not going to stand for this one, really. If you want it to be San Diego then please at least give her an AA suite with decent properties and don't try and balance it around some MBRB gimmick. If you want to do that, take something interesting - like the Sejong - and give it the Atlanta treatment (short range torps, competent AA) and the MBRB, and put it at Tier IX where we know it's not game breaking.
