Caledon, because of a family connection with the C Class and because I like her "big destroyer" playstyle. Podvoisky, because zooming around the map is fun. Bretagne and Normandie, because I like French BBs and these are the first proper ones. Fubuki, because that's my best ship. Honourable mentions to South Carolina, which became surprisingly good when pared with a Steven Segal captain, as well as New Orleans and Helena, which are always fun to play.

What is your most frustrating "Premium" ship?
invicta2012 replied to Leo_Apollo11's topic in General Discussion
Of all the ones I owned (past tense) it was Atlanta. I just don't like hidey US cruisers. Of the ones I have now, it's Monaghan. Her torps can be devastating but you can find yourself with 90 seconds to go until they reload and only two pop guns to defend yourself with. Trading main guns for AA made sense in WW2 but not in Wows. Still, I like the quirky and challenging premiums the best and it makes the successful moments all the sweeter when they come. -
Desperately in need of help to get better
invicta2012 replied to FerrowTheFox's topic in Newcomers' Section
My advice? Stop levelling and play Fubuki until it's second nature. Learn to put your torpedoes where an aggressive enemy will be. With a ship like that, which can kick out 9 torpedoes every 70 seconds, you can constantly have fish in the water without being in any danger yourself. With that level of firepower you can contest caps with no risk, escort allied ships into an enemy cap, lock down an entire side of the map in defence. Your biggest risk is getting too close to the enemy - IJN torps are slow, easily spotted, easy to dodge. If you want to play aggressively, pick another line. And yes, do go back and play some low Tier DDs. V-25 is a classic, with its jousting torpedoes and Medea - like most of the low Tier RN DDs - is an absolute beast. Play those ships until you see why they're so good. -
Almost Historical: Can a Single Torpedo Sink a Ship? - Discussion Thread
invicta2012 replied to The_EURL_Guy's topic in News & Announcements
Actually... many ships remained afloat after torpedo hits, it tended to be the combination of loss of electrical power and fires which caused them to be abandoned, often to be sunk by submarine shortly after. Re; ships surviving ridiculous amounts of damage: I have mentioned HMS Javelin before on other threads, but it bears repetition. She engaged a flotilla of Kriegsmarine Destroyers in the English Channel and came off worst; One torp hit took off her bow, gunfire took off her stern. Less than half the ship's original length remained afloat (155 ft out of an original 350 ft ) but she was repaired and survived WW2. Another example would be the Tribal class HMS Eskimo - which lost her bow to a torpedo: In a bizarre twist of fate, in 1944 Javelin and Eskimo managed to ram each other. Both survived. -
Submarines and schnellboots confirmed! I do think it would be quite easy to have two French DD lines, and because they have those interesting torp launchers (1 x 3 in the centre, 2 x 2 on the sides) the smaller ones could be torp boats. It would go.. V - Bourrasque, VI - L' Adroit, VII - Hoche /T39, VIII - Le Hardi, IX - L'Intrepide, X - T47/Maille Breze and V - Chacal, VI - Guepard, VII - Vauqelin, VIII - Le Fantasque, IX - Mogador, X - T53/Duperre Italian ones V - Turbine , VI - Alfredo Oriani- , VII - Navigatori, VIII - Soldati, IX - Comandanti Medaglie D'Oro, X - Fante Give them those 12k Duca torps and they'd be handy...

I'll bet you several Tribal Class Destroyers that it does.

Oh yes. Italian and French DDs, on paper, are some of the most quirky and fun ships in naval history. Add in to the mix the fact that they both ended up with each other's ships (and a few KM ones), either during WW2 or after it, and you could end up with both nations having two DD lines. Which would be great fun...

I know. 41 knots, eight five inch guns and radar. If they could release Mogador at the same time it would be a Tier IX DD smackdown of amusing proportions.

Is "Concealment" the new "Situational Awareness"?
invicta2012 replied to Admiral_H_Nelson's topic in General Discussion
Cleveland's stock gun range is 14.2K. By this system she would be able to fire at enemies up to between 12.5 and 14.2K away without being automatically detected. For a Baltimore it would be about 12.75 - 14.5. A short stealth fire window would be fine... it would mean that CLs/CAs/ Gunboat DDs didn't have to be balanced around having to do insane amounts of damage in the few, and brief, situations where they have the tactical advantage. That line of thought has led us to Harugumo et al and the campy gameplay of high Tier battles where everyone is petrified of being caught out of position. -
Good battleships, flaky cruisers, monster destroyers and one of the best anti submarine navies in WW2. Plenty to work with there.

Is "Concealment" the new "Situational Awareness"?
invicta2012 replied to Admiral_H_Nelson's topic in General Discussion
While they're mucking around with stealth I would change the gun bloom mechanic. Firing should always make you visible to 75% of your gun range (rather than 100% as at present) with an additional top up to detection of 30% of firing range based on gun calibre. 18 inch gun fire would be visible at 105% of max gun range, 16 inch at 100%, 15 at 95%, and so on. The idea being to reduce the detectability window for 6 and 8 inch cruisers so that they can actually fire in the open without immediately getting blapped. -
Is "Concealment" the new "Situational Awareness"?
invicta2012 replied to Admiral_H_Nelson's topic in General Discussion
IBig argument about submarines, given that they're not in the game proper or likely to be in Random battles for some considerable time. Re: concealment. Cruisers should get an across the board 2% buff to concealment when the skill change hits so that they lose nothing and so that lower skill captains aren't at quite so much of a disadvantage... BBs have the tools to cope with being less stealthy, so they should get nothing in compensation. -
Received a 30% coupon but don t have what to spend it on...
invicta2012 replied to 22cm's topic in General Discussion
I bought Hood with mine, which was an enjoyable choice. Scharnhorst would have been a better credit earner but the big RN BC is such a nice ship to play, couldn't resist at the price. -
The Ranked One thread (post here when you reach Rank I)
invicta2012 replied to ___V_E_N_O_M___'s topic in General Discussion
R1 achieved today. Took 18 games to get from Rank 3 to Rank 1, including a six-game losing streak in Acasta, which was a solid money earner last week, but today couldn't get into the game at all. This was countered by a six-game winning streak in the Krispy Kreme to get to R1, and a lot of entertaining shooting of battleships who thought no-one could hit them behind that island (wrong!!). It was nice that a cruiser could find a role in 8 v 8, but over all I preferred the original format. -
Idea: Remove citadels from cruisers :)
invicta2012 replied to gyrostabilizer's topic in General Discussion
It works, to an extent. How well it works when you're trying to dodge a full salvo from a Lyon.... that's more down to RNG than skill. You have to remember that BBs have acquired ever more guns over the years, got faster and more stealthy, and that they always have the alpha strike advantage over a cruiser. Destroyers, too: previously stealthy torp merchants, now we have 50 knot monsters with Main Gun reload booster, ships with 3 second reload and IFHE skills which just disregard cruiser armour. Power creep means that high-Tier Cruisers have been boxed into a way of playing which requires more care and situational awareness than other ship class in the game: find island or smoke screen. Hug it. Fail to exactly calculate the firing solutions of everyone else that's looking at you.... quick trip back to port. It's not that much fun, so I can see why people would like some solution to be found. -
[PSA] New Policy for "Premium Ship Restoration" Time Limit Removed.
invicta2012 replied to iJoby's topic in General Discussion
Although I never sold or will sell a premium ship, I think that this is awesome. Hmm. I know I have sold... Tachibana Mikasa Konig Albert Oleg Cambeltown Marblehead Lima Okhotnik Okt. Revska Texas Perth Molotov Graf Spee De Grasse Atlanta Haida And I really only regret Haida and (maybe) Perth from that list. But I'm about to get Cossack (due to buffs) and I have Gallant and lots of other RN DDs to play, and just too many Tier VI Cruisers.... The fact that I still have Krasny Krym, Huang He and Monaghan in my port is odd, though, as that's a proper scrap iron flotilla. I forgot Yubari. and Katori. and Smith. And that 30% coupon that arrived today has set the itch off again... Blyska or Z-61? Leningrad or Sims? Scharnhorst or Ashashio, even? -

Ranked Sprints, anyone? The current series should come with an exploding Omaha patch to put on your Insignia.... -
You dont see too many about, to be fair, and she's not the best at being up tiered, but with a 10pt Dasha as her captain she's a fun boat to play, especially when people underestimate her potent AP shells, which will happily citadel any of the cruisers she comes up against.
-
Personally... I'm not bothered. If anyone is daft enough to spend £60 on a Tier IX BB without sufficient game experience to be able to play at that level then the deserve all they get. I do think that there should be a co-op only rule for the first few games for players with very low game numbers, but would there be many of those players? As regards Coal and "Free XP" ships : these should always be available in the Premium shop, too. I'd like to own a Nelson, but the means of purchasing it is annoying. I know that FXP ships are a means of offering an effective discount to loyal players but it would be nice to be able to purchase it outright.

Discussion thread for "some interesting info around the world"
invicta2012 replied to Deamon93's topic in General Discussion
That was always a bit ridiculous. Landing two torps on the nose of a DD and getting nothing for the second one always had the feeling of a bug. IJN Cruiser and DD gun buffs? Myoko will be quite a handful after this goes live. -
Have you been playing Ranked battles? Unfortunately this will affect your MM and if you've hit Rank 1 in the Ranked Sprint events you will probably find yourself being lowtier more often in Random battles than beforehand. Pick your ships for Random accordingly.

Boring endless grind stages for Cossack
invicta2012 replied to Praetorias's topic in General Discussion
Well, quite. Lightning has better gun angles and more torps. She can do more damage at less risk to herself in more circumstances, so she's better. Cossack should really have been VII, they could have balanced her more easily with standard smoke and concealment adjustments, that extra gun over something like Blyska was never really going to be OP. -
Reasons behind "Roflstomps"
invicta2012 replied to RenamedUser_92906789's topic in General Discussion
The snowball effect only occurs when several related factors occur at the same time... Things like an early loss of DDs and their spotting/striking power, Divisions that have synergies (Perth/ Belfast etc), CV match up and so on. However the main reason for the effect is player psychology, it's not as much about resource as people might think, and the key indicator is the movement of battleships. Tentative BBs which neither attack nor defend with any conviction are the normal sign of an unfolding disaster. -
Naval Underdogs: Spain - Discussion Thread
invicta2012 replied to The_EURL_Guy's topic in News & Announcements
There are going to be a lot of County Class cruisers in the game if WG ever gets around to doing them. Three RN types, Two Commonwealth/RAN types, Canarias/Baleares and the ones they didn't build for the RN (Surrey, Northumberland). Are they going to be fun to play, though? Yes to lots of 8in/203 mm guns, but these things have almost no armour at all. Pensacolarama (indeed, I think the Pensa has more armour than these Treaty ships). -
I'd be very happy with a series of Ranked Sprints for all Tiers from II to X. They could make each R1 award unique for each tier to encourage people to collect the full set. I also think.... 1.Single Tier MM is enjoyable and viable. 2. WG does a very good job of balancing silver ships and a very poor one with Premiums. 3. This format seems to be a good learning experience for a lot of people... Lots of communication and focus of a kind you don't see in randoms too often.
