For coal, perhaps? Any details of the Champagne!...? Is it another Big Cruiser? -

Oh good. Another aircraft carrier. Woo hoo. Let's open the Champagne to celebrate. We could use some of those new AP rockets to do it.- 116 replies

Now on ST: AP Rockets for CVs...because reasons.
invicta2012 replied to Jethro_Grey's topic in General Discussion
It's just a silly arcade gimmick from people who appear to have completely lost any sense of balance. You don't need a test iteration to know what happens if you connect with a cruiser belt or deck with 8 inch AP shells. Citadels. Playing against this will be like choosing to sit broadside for an entire game. It's nonsense.- 253 replies

Oh boy. What a terrible, terrible, game breakingly bad idea.

Kongo is a great ship but a complete noob trap. The IJN Tier III and IV are just awful and after suffering those ships - which like so many low tier BBs teach a player nothing about the game except how to be shafted by RNG - they're given this ship which encourages backline sniping. So that's what they do. I honestly think it should be made a premium or part of an IJN BC tree, and something more representative of Fuso, Nagato, etc slotted in at V.

Can we get a battle mode of historic accuracy?

I've always wanted an op based on the St Nazaire Raid... Get yer Campbeltown and prepare for ramming speed! -
What happened to Mainz? Still in development or swept away by the super cruiser hype?

Not sure what their worry is. With half of Europe and Asia preparing to hide indoors until Covid-19 has blown over the last thing they need to worry about is people not spending money on online gaming....

0.9.3, I would have thought. 0.9.2 is the Ikea destroyers. Allen keys at the ready, everyone. -
What Were Your Greatest Gaming Achievements Today ?

I know it's only co-op, but this was fun. (This is my Kiev with the manly 4k torpedoes. The 8k ones are not proletarian enough, comrade). The Albemarle was first, the Imperialists were not expecting the people's destroyers to have secondary guns. Ha ha! Le Fantasque proved that decadent Western destroyers, though fast, are still not fast enough to evade the people's shells. Kremlin proved itself to have become weak in the class struggle by having all its guns pointed in the wrong direction when I executed (metaphorically) the People's Roundabout manoeuvre against an allied island. We then vanquished the Frederich "The Great" and Jean "Bart" with the help of several volleys of finest AP Stalinium to their vainglorious noses. Forward, left! -
They probably wouldn't. Exeter was hors de combat, Ajax had recieved significant damage, and the only reinforcement available was Cumberland. Graf Spee held a significant advantage in range and power of main guns and her secondary armament and torpedoes were every bit a match for a Leander. What the British Force G needed was destroyers, of course, but the Admiralty has always tended to have a brain freeze about ship deployment in the South Atlantic and keeps sending completely the wrong things.
-
Yes and no. Depends what they were for, whether they were built to the terms of a treaty or whether the country involved was cheating. Generally speaking... the British needed lots of capable, long-ranged ships for protecting shipping and the empire, not so many "fleet" cruisers. Cruisers needed to be capable of independent action against surface raiders, have a compliment of Marines for boarding or land actions*, and preferably aircraft for spotting and reporting. * Providing a mobile land force was a historical role of the RN - there are numerous examples of guns being taken from ships of the line in the 19th century to be used as field artillery by marines on land - hence the historical field gun races between the RN Dockyards, based on the drills needed to move these guns. This explains the RN cruiser designs we have in game. The British were desperate to keep cruiser size down and to restrict the size and power of what could be built, fearing another arms race and also being bankrupted by the cost of other navies which only needed to build a few large raiding cruisers to provide a significant threat to shipping. 6 inch gun cruisers provided the best mix of range, endurance and gunpower - what was sacrificed was armour and habitability for the crew. If you ever go to HMS Belfast, take a look around and try and work out where 600+ rating were going to sleep on that thing. Not enough room to swing a cat. As for armour - the Director of Naval Construction once issued a memo to his designers, which said "Cruisers should not rely on armour for survival", and boy did he mean it.

Angled Albemarle receives frontal annihilation by Sinop (video included)
invicta2012 replied to Grimmblut's topic in General Discussion
Well, they'd be powerful but we're talking about armament in single turrets on both sides of the ship - you can only get four on a target by giving a full broadside. 15 second reload on the main guns, limited secondaries for anti-DD defence (two 7.5 inch guns per side, they'd give a proper wallop if they hit....) . It's a cut-down version of a Tier III BB, really, which I think would fit OK. -
Honestly? No. Fire was (and still is) the biggest risk to a warship. Think about the amount of battle damage taken by German battlecruisers at the Battle of Jutland - multiple heavy calibre gun hits, still floating, still fighting. Then consider the number of warships lost to fire damage (it's an awful lot, including the last major warships lost in action - Sheffield, Ardent, Antelope).

I've had some fun with Hawkins recently - she can be a bit of a bully in the right circumstances - but I think she's been over-promoted to Tier V. Uptiers horribly badly. York would have been a better Tier V, part of a full line from III to X (Warrior, Hawkins, York, Devonshire...) but I don't think WG can be arsed to model Tier IIIs if they're not DDs, knowing they'll not be played by anyone much. -

A good call. I'd got Albemarle from the early access containers so London seemed worthwhile on a "buy one, get one free" basis and they both count towards the Tokens,so no need to spend £30... I don't think London's a bad ship, btw - more than useable in Ops, you'll get value for your money - but I think she promises a play style she's not good enough to deliver. -

Of course. The thing is that London is a recycled WIP Exeter. And people are going to be disappointed, because the thing about WIP Exeter was that her detection was ludicrously low - you could get in her secondary range without detecting her in smoke - but London doesn't have that advantage. To be honest... I think it's a noob trap ship. The sort of Premium that people buy thinking that having smoke will paper over cracks in their gameplay.... and it won't. Devonshire is much better, all round. -

invicta2012 replied to Grimmblut's topic in General Discussion
Sadly, not. London's guns have the same reload, damage and fire chance as Exeter but a shorter range (13.4km / 14.3km). Devonshire, on the other hand, has faster reload, better HE alpha and better fire chance. Devon's torpedoes are better, as is her AA, and her torpedo damage reduction. Overall I think the "traditional" County is far superior to the Premium. -
I think CV should be removed (or rebalanced) - the whole community is complaining about the current state
invicta2012 replied to anonym_mUbHU0hZb1bv's topic in General Discussion
I do remember. Getting cross dropped by a Taiho when in an Atlanta... That was a real WTF?? moment. But, as Jingles recently argued, this was occasional. CVs were in every third game, rarely in pairs, so that type of event was rare and "part of the game", no worse than eating citadels or a random DD torp salvo. New CVs have increased CV player numbers and the faults of new gameplay are now apparent in the majority of games, which is no fun. -
American Premiums Reviewed Pt.1 - stable boats for geniuses. Bigly.

Marblehead Lima Possibly the most pink and stripey cruiser in the game, if that's your thing. Sadly unable to be captained by irate pink teddy bears due to not being Japanese. Possesses an early example of American clockwork dorptedoes (see also: Sims, Black) and is constantly casting longing glances at its Soviet cousin Murmansk wondering why it couldn't have all the nice things that ship has, like decent torpedoes and spotter planes and better rudder shift and.... W.Virginia 1941 It's the wrong WV, Gromit! The West Virginia that no-one wanted and WG didn't want to call Maryland because players might confuse it with a packet of biscuits. Or something. This BB is the equivalent of an irate Joe Pesci on a mobility scooter. If it catches you then terrible things will happen. But it won't, and will sit in the distance waving a stick and calling you Bad Names. Should be English, because loading this ship into a game means you will have enough time for a pot of tea and colonising half the world before you get into range of an opponent.- 18 replies

What do you do when a teammate actively refuses to play the game?
invicta2012 replied to Glig69's topic in General Discussion
Nothing. They'll get bored and go away eventually. -
Yes, that's true. They can reduce fun and engaging.
-
I assume that everyone who wants to play Tier X is playing Tier X by now. You can't make them if they don't want to by nerfing their favourite ships.
-
Are they still peddling that piffling IFHE rework nonsense, where the same calibre and type of gun does a different amount of damage depending on the tier of the ship it's bolted on to?
