Narai OP - credit nerf now at 0,75 : 1 (credits for dam)
invicta2012 replied to SEN_SEN_Channel_Portugue's topic in General Discussion
It is, but you can have a decent game. Distracting the Missouri so that it beaches itself away from the convoy is one tactic you can use. Then it doesn't blap any cruisers or transports, and you can pick it to pieces as needed. There's always a way. The only downer with Narai these days is the "late arrival" trend. BBs going walkabout and then turning up at the end to take the plaudits, expecting everyone else to tank for them..... -

You scored 23 torpedo hits. With DWTs. Which do 15,000 per hit, especially to a load of Tier V BBs with no torpedo protection. I can't think of any Tier VII Cruiser capable of that much damage - even Atlanta would struggle. And if we're going to compare the ship, we should at least compare it to the same class. I'm a fan of Heavy Cruisers, and I think that compared to the other ships of the type - Myoko, New Orleans, Surrey, Yorck, Zara, Gorizia - it's a decent pick. I won't argue too much about it, but I think it's a ship with an undeserved bad rep, and something like Narai is a chance to rediscover these ships and take them out for fun. I have played it a few times. Stick with the fleet, use your guns. Just don't yolo that Missouri. It's the one occasion where those torpedo happy Scharnhorsts come in handy. -
Well, I do play DDs in Narai, but that was rather my point - if I'm going to take one do I take Skane or do I take Blyksa, Jervis, Gadjah, Akatsuki, Vauquelin, Leningrad... all of which hit harder and have more tools for that sort of match. I would happily live with 10k and 65 knot torps if I could have two quad launchers -as it stands I can land all six torps and I'll do as much damage as three of Blyksa's.... I really liked Vasteras. As you say, built for kiting - dump torps, hit speed boost, kite away and set fires.
-
I noticed that. I recently torpedoed a Jean Bart for 2500 damage. This is going to take a while, lads.

This is all good stuff, thanks. However it sounds like a ship which is only really worthwhile in Random matches (perhaps I will play a few). In other modes it is outgunned, outspotted, and generally overmatched by other choices. I also find the gun DPM - like all 2 turret ships -questionable. It excels at harassing larger ships but with other DDs I tend to find the shells straddling the target, while single gun ships score hits. Adjustments to be made accordingly, I suppose.

Hey WG - Sub testing with teams of 8 bots and 4 humans per side is a waste of everyones time!
invicta2012 replied to IanH755's topic in General Discussion
The best games I have had ended in Ranked type situations - 7 vs 7 human players, with balanced classes, and perhaps one bot per side (which is, of course, better than That Bloke At the Back in His Tirpitz, which every game normally contains). Full size team games are very confused. -

invicta2012 replied to IanH755's topic in General Discussion
Well.... if Sub testing is anything like the Early Access modes, you could use it to build XP and improve your ships so that when they're actually released, we don't have a game situation where everyone starts at Tier IV. If they do higher tier testing - and they should - it would be quite possible for those players to have a developed Tier VI and VIII by the time the class goes live. Yup. We're back to the bad old days of Double Perth divisions. With CV and Subs spotting, there is quite some power to be had from infinite smokescreens, spotter planes and hydro. -
Only when we get Stord so that we can reveal the secret weakness of German ships - Norway!

She has good guns, good range, reload boost, torpedoes, hydro, 30kt+ speed... you can have fun with her in Narai. It's a much under-rated ship. No problem with the CV side of things here - or dodging the unwanted attention of Missouri - and six of those citadels were "over the hill" shots in the end game. The only thing I would say about her is that she feels like an outlier in the French line... they feel more like CLs. -

This is rather the thing. In the last month they've given me 100,000,000 credits (and I re-bought ships with it) and two free ships via the Soviet event (Tallinn, Mikoyan), encouraged me to buy the Makarov, and to use the sub testing mode to grind three Tier VIII carriers. I am still working on unlocking Drake from the RN CA event, and am still at Skane on the IKEA DDs. My port has so many ships in it my head is spinning. I don't have the head space to learn Submarines as well. -
I wish it was called Galveston. That way we'd have a Jimmy Webb set. (Phoenix, Wichita, Galveston)
-
She's a CA. Which puts Wichita in an odd place. And torpedoes? On an American cruiser? WG, you are just making it up now. :) That should be another nation's ship... Like the Munchen, though.

USSR Carriers / Carriers of the Soviet Union up till 1949
invicta2012 replied to Widar_Thule's topic in General Discussion
No need! I think these are very fair points - and it's worth saying that this whole thread is based on speculation over the inevitability of a Soviet CV line. With regards to the planes that might feature on a Soviet CV line, however... we know that some of the planes in Soviet service in WW2 were certainly capable of being navalised (not least the Hurricane IIB fighter-bombers provided by the British) and it seems likely that similar modifications to the Yak series were possible. While the IL-2's armour may be a problem (did it need a particularly long take off strip?) that Soviet specialisation in ground attack seems quite a viable theme for the line - more about fast, nimble rocket and light bombers than torpedoes. (Although that could be quite an annoying specialism and I might live to regret suggesting it....)- 49 replies

PSA: If you are grinding Tier VI DD/CA/CL/BB use the new "Submarine Battle" game mode because it is great way to grind fast and efficient! :-)
invicta2012 replied to Leo_Apollo11's topic in General Discussion
Of course, I had it down with all the other distances (KM!). It is a bit silly. I think that surface attacks at mid depths should have an effect - perhaps not damage, per se, but on the energy bar? (I haven't actually played submarines yet, so am a bit fuzzy about the mechanics). -

That's the way. You can farm DDs without the guilt that you're ruining some poor old DD main's day. They're just bots. Send them to Davy Jones's Locker and enjoy the rewards. I do agree, however, that the 5.9-6.1 thing is a problem. The number of times I have got the drop on a Sub only to see him become invulnerable by dropping 200m (which takes less time than my attack run, regardless of how well timed). Very frustrating. -

Gosh, yes. I have unlocked Implacable, Shokaku and Lexington playing this mode. It's an XP bonanza. Admittedly it will also drive you slightly crazy (**WiBbLE**) due to the gameplay, but great if you've got some lines you've not used and fancy getting ahead on levelling. -
WG Motto: Never let a bad idea go to waste. The thing was that if you got the Mikoyan early, you had 4 x 7 easy bonus missions per week to earn more tokens - nearly 100 per week. So, RNGesus be praised, it was possible to get the Miky, Tallinn Camo and Tallinn ship without paying anything. To get the Riga and Petropoavlosk you'd need to buy the Baglady and Oglabov (or whatever they're called) for their bonus missions.

Playing Aircraft Carrier in 2020 is just like...
invicta2012 replied to WG_IS_BAD's topic in General Discussion
Then you're probably better than me! The higher up the Tiers you go, the more CV play becomes a matter of resource management and patience. The longer the battle goes on, the more the ships disperse and the more AA mounts they lose. Save your planes as much as possible for later in the game. Early doors you'll be looking at around 1/3rd losses, at least, from most attack runs, so concentrate on spotting and helping the team, then you can profit later. -

Well... I know how you feel. It's not easy to try and pick this up at Tier VIII (as I found out while playing a Lexington recently). It's also not especially clear how you do it (especially if you're a glasses wearer like me, and have poor depth perception...). Because the CVs jump up 2 tiers at a time you can go from Ranger dropping bombs on an Omaha to Lexington vs Smolensk in the space of two games, and that's a challenge. Play the Tier VI CVs more to learn the ropes. Generally the thing to do is to know the AA distances on the ship you're attacking. Flak normally goes from about 6k to 3k. When you're about to enter the flak zone, you start to sway the planes. The flak will tend to appear at a point based on your course and speed, so when you see one set you want to dodge away in the opposite direction and then sway back to try and misdirect the next set. You use your boost late to get within the 3k zone where the only damage you will take is continuous damage, which is much less dangerous. You also want to think about squad shortening - if your squadron has three attack waves and you're having trouble dodging flak , then drop your first attack away from red team ships. They'll go back to the carrier.... and if your next attack is less than optimal (i.e. a terrible failure) then you'll still have planes on the deck. -
submarines SUBMARINES - discussion, feedback, opinions
invicta2012 replied to WG_Lumberjack's topic in General Discussion
As long as they come in the right way and the right place, that's fine. WG has a regrettable tendency to impose things on a community rather than offering choice. Perhaps they forget that people don't have to play the game. -
USSR Carriers / Carriers of the Soviet Union up till 1949
invicta2012 replied to Widar_Thule's topic in General Discussion
True, but so were the BBs we have in game. A speculative development path for Soviet CVs is easy enough to work out, along with navalised versions of likely aircraft. It's hard to say there shouldn't be a line like this in the game when even the "real" lines have things like Fairey Spearfish, which barely got out of the prototype stage.- 49 replies

That never stopped the Soviets. They did have some very fine engineers and I'm sure they could have worked it out had there been a need - it's rather the limits on the operational range of the aircraft which put them off. The advent of jets post war (and some purloined German plans) made it happen in reality.- 49 replies

Just unlocked my Tallinn. That's a good ship. Just made the classic era of forgetting to add the upgraded modules before I took it out for the first game. Didn't notice. My Albemarle wants armour like that....

Algerie is a splendid cruiser which no-one seems to like. I do play it Narai and it's fun, you can certainly do a lot of damage, but like Surrey, there are just some better picks. -
The Embra? Bah-gration. To the Tune of Boney M's "Ma Baker".
