Defense of Naval Station Newport
invicta2012 replied to Tordenskjold23's topic in General Discussion
Not going badly this week. With the new German CVs so common place, and their ability to blat half the health from a Tier VI cruiser in one strike being very useful here, most games are wins. -

I am currently playing Viribus Unitis, having replaced the WoWs dramatic music with some peaceful tunes. Is really quite relaxing.... -

Well, not if you're looking to complete the missions in Co-op, as that mode is now completely full of German torpedo battleships. Bringing anything else is almost completely pointless. -
You could always use the Smoke Gen mod from the Armory? I suspect they might be worried about unleashing a Tier VIII Perth on the game - if you had the spotter, Armory mod and Superintendent going that's eight minutes of smoke firing per game on an 18.5k range. (I think it still does have the spotter like Wichita, doesn't it?) I am hoping (although it won't be popular) that they make it work like Mainz - where you have to choose between manoeuvrability or stealth in Slot 5. If it gets smoke and torpedoes then it definitely needs a downside compared to the other US CLs.

I'm not sure they have. Isn't this just going from Baltimore guns to Wichita guns?

Get one and Play it in Operations, maybe? WG wants you to pick up an Ark Royal or a Loewenhardt for a few quid. (Mine was free, but that event was a while ago). You could do it with any of the Tier VI CVs, mind (and they're all quite good and different). -

Just dodge. Acasta is really good at that, and it has a good torpedo load for Tier V. Otherwise this is a good excuse to bring out some Tier VI premiums like T-61, Anshan and Gallant. -
My current port is Marseille. I don't think it affects the container drop chance. :)

Missiles as artillery - able to reach a certain point on the map - might be an entertaining idea. I think it would probably work better than submarines, provided that it worked in a similar way to Torpedoes and allowed for HMS Glamorgan style dodging. But it has been tested by WG already and not implemented. They might be able to get away with something like the RN County Class DD conversions which gave up B turret for a 4-shot Exocet launcher, or the Soviet Kotlins - just something to give DD players an attack capability in the 12-20k range.

This is becoming quite frustrating, really. There seems to be random errors with the CV autopilot. One several occasions over the last few weeks trying to use the CV autopilot from the Tactical map has resulted in: 1 - no change in speed, so I don't go anywhere. I have to recall my squadrons, go back to CV view, engage forward speed and then reengage the autopilot 2 - no change in direction, so course changes at waypoints don't work, usually resulting in the CV YOLO ing the enemy 3 - no endpoint stop, CV wanders off where it will 4 - a course being set far too close to an island, resulting in the CV doing three point turn practice for five minutes 5 - courses being set where the direction of travel is forwards but the CV starts going backwards It is driving me absolutely *nuts*. Has anyone else had these problems or noticed a similar pattern?

Is it just me, or is the CV autopilot broken?

Sound advice, but difficult in Newport, when all you have to work with is..... -
is anything after T-22 worth grinding ?
invicta2012 replied to HassenderZerhacker's topic in General Discussion
Gaede only exists as a means to play German DDs with cruiser guns. T-61 also got the HE pen buff and that makes it better in every respect. Maass was OK, from what I remember of it - had some good games when the bigger health pool made sense - but I got bored with the Tier VIII. The problem with Z-23 was that it hadn't got really got better compared to the Tier VI or VII - 0.5k and 700 extra damage on the torpedoes , a bit more health, at the time when there's a quantum leap in the quality and ability of other ships, and that made it feel like a drag. -
Personally I bought the containers because I liked the ships on offer. WG's recent run of German premiums has brought up some interesting ships like Odin, which I enjoy. I expect to have to spend around 75% of the shop value of the ship on containers to get something good, and I got Mainz for less than that, so it seems good value. Obvs your experience may vary. I doubt I will be buying Santa crates this year because of the "broad lottery" nature of those boxes and the almost inevitable chance of getting something I don't want or won't value like an Ashitaka or Indianapolis, and I rarely buy another kinds of premium container. This set seemed a way of getting something enjoyable.

You may be right. Another example of "surprise mechanics". -
I like the look of this one, I have to say. Looks as if it's here for a good time, not a long time.
-
Four containers, some flags and camos, and a Mainz. 50% off the ship, so that's all good.
-
Sounds nice but resource hungry. Please make sure that these additional effects are easy to turn off / turn down if needed. One of the good things about WoWs is that it doesn't need flash gear in order to play it - I know some of your players are seeing things in 4K with all the bells and whistles, but it's nice to be able to play the game on a standard laptop.

Weekly Combat Missions: India Independence Day
invicta2012 replied to The_EURL_Guy's topic in News & Announcements
Well... I'm still waiting to see what they do with INS Delhi, because in a previous life she was HMSNZ Achilles / HMS Achilles, and there's a chance of doing a Boise/NdJ style job of making them both available. "Battle of The River Plate" pack, anyone? Exeter, Graf Spee, Achilles and the Ajax camo for Leander? -
Pan America has some splendid Dreadnought era BBs, some interesting Cruisers and a top quality line of gunboat DDs. There's ships lurking in that Pan Am DD line which would make Friesland and Halland cry. This sort of thing: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Almirante-class_destroyer - guns with a reload time of 1.2 - 1.5 seconds - or this one - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ARC_7_de_Agosto_(D-06) - which is an Halland with 33% more guns. Lots of discussion here: https://forum.worldofwarships.com/topic/143783-latinamerican-tree-destroyers - and overall another very capable line of DDs with serious AA.

It's fragile and everyone knows it is, so in PvP everyone shoots at it. Be prepared for that, especially as her armour (like a lot of cruisers) makes her vulnerable to heavy hits while kiting away - her deck gets overmatched by anything above 14 inch and plunging fire from abaft will probably result in citadels. You may want to save your smoke for that moment when something big is targeting you from 10-15k away. The guns on the Italian CAs do take a lot of getting used to but they're actually good practice for a technical approach to gunnery. I got a lot from them. I may be a Co-op/Ops main these days but I like a challenge and you do have to think about where to aim with these things - but it's rewarding when you get it right (see the post above from Haachama). Ops are a good place to practice this - you can make a big impression if you pick the right angle of attack to get the best from your guns.

I have just dumped Amalfi and will be proceeding no further up the line. I'm sure these ships seemed fun at the time, but, like the Euro DDs, they have no purpose in the modes I play. However... I do still have the Trento, Zara and Gorizia, and I like them rather a lot. Trento is as fragile as heck, but she has her uses - SAP, properly used, is powerful and she has punchy AP. With regard to straddling targets, I do this all the time on twin gun turret ships - you just need to adjust a little bit up or down.

Submarine Battles results and work on submarines (DB 60)
invicta2012 replied to Tanatoy's topic in Development Blog
Anti-submarine armaments for battleships and heavy cruisers In the new test iteration, battleships and heavy cruisers will be able to call anti-submarine defense planes. When choosing this type of weapon, the camera rises, and the aiming reticle will allow the player to select a point within a radius of about 10 km, into which, after a while, an aircraft will drop a depth charge. Charges of anti-submarine armaments will be gradually restored, like the charges of depth charges. Battleships and heavy cruisers will be able to locate where approximately a submarine is with the help of hydrophone at a 3-5 km distance. This is quite an interesting idea - however I think it should be a consumable for BBs and CAs which currently have aircraft handling equipment and can slot a fighter or Spotter plane. Might be an interesting re-balancing factor, esp. at high tiers. Also: good way of introducing Helicopters. Tiger class cruiser as ASW Specialist? -
Loewenhardt and Pommern are in the shop / armory
invicta2012 replied to Smeggo's topic in General Discussion
It was just as bad last week, and yes, it is largely down to people trying to grind through the Wheezer as quickly as they can. -

Just been playing the EL in Newport and she works nicely there. The rocket planes feast on all those isolated cruisers - although prudent to shorten to 2 flights in a squadron, and the HE bombers can be nasty. Torpedoes - being slow - do a good job of knocking ships off their course (a Newport essential) but flood chance on the late game BBs is iffy - really only use the torp planes when other types are regenerating. -
dear diary, it's happening.... thank u!

*snort* I suppose that's one way of intimidating the enemy.
