Will Somers render the Shimakaze redundant?

fair enough - I'm not even sure my low opinion of the Gearing is all that up to date anymore. But I just look at all the things you might want a ship to do and... Knife-fighting: yes, Gearing's good, but loses to Harugumo (because lol), Daring, Z-52 (assuming it has hydro+smoke up), gets murdered by a competent Grozovoi unless you manage to really sneak up on the guy and catch him at 4km or something... so I already dont want to fight half the ships at my tier. Pretty great at bullying lower tier DDs though admittedly. And you of course have the issue of lulzy orbital USN ballistics, meaning you get shafted as soon as someone is smart enough to just kite you... Torping: decent, but... the 16km set has pretty long reload, and for the 10.5km set I'd just rather play a Fletcher (more nimble and gets to fight T7s on occasion)... AA: again decent, but you still die to planes once your health runs out - Grozo has what? 10-15k more HP to play with over the course of a match? Maneuverability: Slow and fat. Meh at best. Concealment: mediocre. Smoke: Best in class, sure, but requires some pretty specific circumstances to be actually valuable to yourself (i.e. no radar and targets in your puny range for an eternity - I'd much rather have the Daring's smokes for the occasional Dakkasession...). Good for a divmate for sure though. So yeah overall I just dont see much of a reason why I would want to play the Gearing when it doesnt really have strengths I can reliably exploit - a Jack of all Trades but Master of none kind of ship is decent enough at mid tier, but at T10 everyone else is so ridiculous at one or more things that the Gearing just seems a bit obsolete... you might be right though, potentially a very different story for relatively new players. But still, I'm going to stick with the Grozo advice - between the speed, solid AA, amazing guns at all ranges, and especially the heal it's such a forgiving ship (for top-tier DD standards at least)... that is a big bonus - Grozo really wants a high-skill captain (16-17 at least) to be at its finest, because you want CE, SI, SE and your pick of RL, BFT, AFT and MAA.
  2. RNG working as intended, i.e. it hates you.

Will Somers render the Shimakaze redundant?

true, all other DDs at T10 have things going for them. Gearing doesn't. It can do everything a little bit, but nothing well. Second or third place at best, and just straight up shite in some categories. Go for the Grozovoi instead. I assume even the Ognevoi is playable nowadays with the heal, and Udaloi's always been an utter monster...

Will Somers render the Shimakaze redundant?

I am the exact same idiot. So... high five for that? I mean, an even more extreme example is Chung Mu vs Yue Yang - after the nerfs to the latter, Chung Mu is not just on par but the objectively superior ship. So yay for WG balance department I guess...? And I suppose (to get back on topic) Somers does have the torpedo range, along with sheer volume, to still at least be relevant even if CV presence or superior enemy DD gunpower forces it to hang back. Shima 12km is sometimes a bit tight for that depending on map and position...

Will Somers render the Shimakaze redundant?

if you want to go purely by strength and effectiveness... there arent many. Doesn't mean Shima can't be fun at times - those torp walls are still plenty deadly when you do get to use them. It's just not nearly as reliable as with other DDs because you lack the means to defend yourself against even T8 carriers or some of the lower-tier DDs, so Shima needs to be played very carefully (and Somers doesnt look to be much different in that regard with its mediocre gunpower and laughable AA). Top-Tier Fletcher can be a lot bolder usually.
  6. simply put - because in my personal opinion it's not nearly a big enough deal to get worked up over. I dont really like it myself, but I wouldn't accuse anyone of cheating or any dumb stuff like that for using it - yes, it is very useful information, but outside of a very very few extremely specific cases between super evenly matched players it's not gonna decide an engagement. And it's also part of the approved modpacks, so who the heck am I to judge anyway

Will Somers render the Shimakaze redundant?

debatable. Somers with the stats we know right now has the gunpower of a Cossack with its 4x2 5" guns on 5s reload, arguably a bit worse because USN arcs. And while Cossack is certainly a strong DD, it's a T8... Meanwhile, Shima gets one less turret, slightly worse reload - but the significantly better IJN alpha and fire chance, plus much better arcs.
  8. most of the mods I used have been incorporated into the UI by now - ship names on minimap for example. But there are still a few that WG havent gotten around to. Namely: Extended tech tree (just in port, but might as well mention it) Better contour icons. It's not that by now I couldnt recognize most of the ship silouettes (keep the spelling mistakes ), but I am frankly too lazy to count the number of funnels or what have you to identify the ship icon in the middle of a match - I want to see the name at a glance. The one I use also happens to come with a bit of additional info like max gun and torp range of the ship in question, but those I dont need anymore. Still, I guess that also counts as "additional info that the vanilla player does not get". Related to that, I use one of the team panel mods that shows me the current (or last spotted at least) HP of ships on both teams. Very useful information to see at a glance to judge which low HP targets to look for, which friendly ships might or might not be able to support you in a push etcetera. I could get most of that information by looking around, but this way it's so much more convenient. So again, "information advantage" I guess. Mods I tried but no longer use: The somewhat infamous/contentious Running Lights (shows whether target's going forward or backward) and Navigator (shows precise angle). The former didnt feel useful to me at all, while the latter I personally felt was too much additional and precise information. So I decided for myself that I wouldn't run Navigator - but I wouldn't blame anyone that does use it.

Roma's 18.1km Range: Is it really justified at tier 8?

yes that's exactly what I am telling you. Roma's just fine. She's not the strongest T8 BB there is, no, but so bloody what? She's fully competitive, there's plenty of things to like about her. Doesn't mean everyone has to like her...

doesnt need more, especially not with that dispersion lol

    CV: Spotting changes super test

I've always found it funny that a CV with armoured deck would be among the tankiest ships in the game, if it werent for the autopilot making it nigh-on impossible to remain angled when you need to...

    Cant pick skill?

yeah that would indeed be a strange bug of some sort... I know I've picked a few of these "inefficient" skills (hooray for IFHE Secondary Kurfürst!) without issue... Welcome back by the way

The Odd Man Out S1E2 Let's Fletcher

seconded. You can also consider taking Torpedo Armament Expertise instead of BFT - I would not call it a straight up better choice, but an option depending on your playstyle (i.e. how much and how successfully you use your torpedoes). Don't have time to watch the replay at the moment, unfortunately... but I'm sure others will

    Fastest way to Make Credits?

on T10s they do, otherwise not really. And even on T10 you're much better off with, say, Gamescom - basically whatever fancy paintjob gives you the most of whatever it is you're after at the moment.

    Fastest way to Make Credits?

in my opinion there is quite literally nothing good, interesting or enjoyable about the ship (least of all any aspect of its armament). Not a debate for in here though, agree to disagree? Alaska's pretty solid I'd say - no Stalingrad, sure, but then again very few ships are. As for whether it's dull or not - depends entirely on your taste... I personally dont like the Supercruisers, but that's not because I dont respect them as potentially strong ships - just not my style.

    Fastest way to Make Credits?

nothing in the pipeline that we know of, and we know of enough (probable) T10 premiums to last us the rest of the year unless WG dramatically speeds up their release schedule of those things. As for making money reliably and relatively quickly - you can try taking your Sims into operations. Usually not as... volatile, shall we say? as Randoms, so if you know what you're doing you should be getting pretty consistent results. PEF is pretty terrible for Ops (and in general), but Sims should generally be okay for most of the T7 ones (shame the Dunkirk one is on the shelf for now, you could get some pretty insane plane kill scores there^^).

Any tipps to get fun as DD ?

how about you drop down a few tiers and get more comfortable with the new CV meta there? There are some very good, well rounded "practice" ships at T6 for example (looking at you T-61 and Shinonome), and the environment is a lot less deadly (Ranger instead of Midway, not a lot of radar unless you end up in a T8 match, much lower firepower on most cruisers etc) - so you can get to grips with this brave new world we live in nowadays without getting shat on as hard as you do at top tier.

What to take as 4th module on a New Mexico

on BBs I generally take DamaCon mod in that slot, every bit of fire resistance helps and off the top of my head I can't think of anything that would make the NewMex differ in that regard
