Brace yourself, DX 11 is comming - or how WG is "only" a little over decade behind soon
havaduck posted a topic in General Discussion
From the portal: Starting with Update 0.6.9, the game by default will use DirectX 11 for Windows platforms. The only exception will be game stations using Intel graphics processors—for these models, the game client will still be using DirectX 9. All players will have an option to manually switch between DirectX 9 and DirectX 11. DirectX 11 implementation will allow us to implement new graphics technologies to the game in the future and in version 0.6.9 will not affect the graphics or client performance. Lets get the big elephant out of the room: I cant see and DX 11 specific features yet. The switchback mode explicitly implies that there is nothing DX 11 specific (like Tesselation "instead" of POM in other games) that couldnt be done (slower) with D10 or 9. With that update WG is "only" lagging behind a little bit more than a decade! (8800 GTX, DX 10, 2006, no more relevant (Intel, mobile ...) DX 9 cards afterwards. To be more specific: They already used an DX 9E mode, and I have been questioning ever since why the wouldnt just translate the rendering path to DX 11 -> Experiments in the era a decade ago showed that most work is easily done automated with only minimal human polishing required for an respectable performance gain. Further, DX 11 without those exclusive features actively used can be run on any DX 9c, or at least 10 card. The only exception is a non-DX 11 capable OS. So thats 10, 8 , 7, Vista with 10 only and ...... oh yeah, Windows XP without. According to their own minimum specs: Windows 7 is required (even on the ru page). Further all the graphics card there mentioned are at least DX 10 only ..... So DX 11 here, everything well? ........ well not really. WG still hasnt found the sekrit documents from 3dfx (over 2 decades ago) for SSAA or at least MSAA. Ingame you get only sucky blurr-aa. This is a big deal because in DX 11 you can only enhance, but not generally force an AA mode. You see this shitty blur AA is a post processing effect, and has as much to do with real AA as coating your monitor in grease! There you go, you can see even less aliasing with even less of a performance hit. Right now I am forcing 8x FSSSAA - and with it, the aliasing Eyecancer is gone lowered to acceptable levels. I am to lazy to take new screens - have some really old comparison with 4 x SGSSAA from back then (8 is better obviously). .... and ffs view the pictures with 1:1 pixel mapping and not scaled down! So everything is lost? Well down sampling will still work, since it doesnt force a AA mode (which the DX 11 specs prohibit, and it now rests specifically on the game side for AA to be called onto the driver, which then can be swapped out for a higher quality one via settings/[haggs ]). The thing is: Downsampling is OGSSAA, its inferior, more expensive (aka same card, you will be only able to afford less iq), and best of all: With this shitty not scaling UI - you will need a microscope. An example: I run 8xSGSSAA, on 1920x1200. For this at least 3x3 down sampling would be appropriate ....... thats 5760 x 3600! I have to give them one thing: DX 9 mode is still staying, so there is nothing forcing DX 11 upon you - which is uncommonly considerate from WG. I bet they only want a fail save in case they (again) fail really hard ....... Thing is: Games like Metro 2033 started using things like tesselation (and Metro did it truly russian stronk programming style be "pumping up" typewriters ) in 2010. The first DX 11 cards are from 2008 ....... so I expect WG with their "2 steps ahead in being a decade behind everyone else"-agenda to throw some additional things in, beginning in the next 1-2 years as timeframe. Who knows, they might even fix the Carrier UI and the damn chat because game 2 - 3 decades ago got that one right! Anyway, sooner or later there will be probably be a choice between Eyecancer or no new graphic-features - or they might just switch of the DX 9 mode entirely off because its no longer relevant in their eyes. At least bugfixing will be mainly on the DX 11 client after a while, while DX 9 will be attended too, but only in legacy mode ....... a horrible prospect for anyone in DX 9 mode because WG is horrible in the bug fixing even when you are in the primary group. Hope some found it interesting. I hope even the ones using AA found it even more useful ..... One disclaimer here: I am not up 2 date when it comes to the graphics part. I pretty much dont have the time anymore. What I want to say there is I am not up to date anymore so I might miss out on crucial information ....... if so, you know where the reply button is. tl;dr - I got at least Win 7 with a at least a DX 11 card, what will change for me? Knowing WG, some new crashes and bugs to enjoy. Maybe a performance boost, but knowing them it might as well be a loss initially due to framedrops (which you dont want torp beating or meleeing somebody). Basically have fun being the guinea pic for WG. In general? Nothing, maybe a driver update when the DX 11 client releases and you want to use that. Some more eyecandy in next 1-3 years. If you want a preview, go look up some 8 year old games ........ -

There should be one, although how big is hard to tell. Depends on the model and the settings. It also depends on how old that card is and what manufacturer. ATI/AMD has a habit of cutting the support rather fast. (A really old driver basically set up for max. compatibility but without tweaks for modern game wont the breaking records obviously) I still remember that one from my NB 4650 1 GDDR 3. . Havent tried it there to be honest. I can run WoWs ......... ok-ish, but the version I got there is probably ancient since it was only meant as a emergency backup. Still has nobody with a DX 10.x card yet tested to run this game? If no DX 11 exclusive techfeatures are used, it should work just fine (example: Civ 5), but the perf. gain should be somewhat lower. -

Well I say you are kinda late, we have been over this topic a few times already in the scrub channel. Lets just say some Scrubs have a "similar disposition". I think @lameoll got even his animated avatar out of that "discussion". So, somebody likes Warhammer? €: Sorry if I ruined Warhammer now for some people , and hey that post was sent before I saw Tuccys - I would have probably filed it under "advise" anyway. On topic: But I have so many of them ....... and a lot are only 0 pts. I would really like to dismiss them, alone to make organising and switching captains around much more easy without having to go over a whole list of simply clutter. €2: You were saying? -

Grinding the Roon be like: Yeah its such a power house with no AP pen, horrible bounce angles on the AP and HE firepower against DDs that the old BFT B-Hull Omaha surpassed it by only a measly 30+ k dpm - while not having to shoot up DDs with 25 k hp btw. Meanwhile it doesnt turn and its fat! I had it coming at me with Baltimores and Ibukis next to it - for comparison. Naturally the Baltimore is also chubby, but the Ruin is fat! No wonder the shells never miss it! It takes lot of damage even from HE or AP onto the superstructure - which is again big. Its effective against close to mid range targets that are too occupied or too brain-dead to angle and do anything against the Ruin ........ except that goes for any other ship too, this one just might be slightly better at it (than some other shitty cruisers) because of the higher AP damage rating. If any other cruiser would dare to show me this result with 20 cm shells, I would sell it on the spot. Well I can design an even better german cruiser! It has the AP damage of of the Yamato but only 10 mm pen. It bounces off if not hitting the surface at least 89 ° and the HE does 10 damage with a pen of 5000 mm - so it will constantly citadel things! To make up for it, its as big as the Kurfürst, has the Armor of Black Swan and if you want to turn the rudder, the rudder shift is as long as however long it takes for the order to reach helmsman via written mail. So OP, much wow. I am now actually curious about the Donnie Darko - it was once considered the worst T9, but now with IFHE it might be passable enough ..... probably way above this pos. Raining, fresh air, not to hot. Great weather. I am going to sleep well. Might let the bird enjoy the blanket even. The moment they realise they get to sleep in the bed, they turn into a happy and sleepy ball of soft and warm feathers.- 3,079 replies

Grinding the Ruin in co-op. Result doesnt look that impressive, but I was alone against 5 or 6 of them at the end after the other human player, the Atlanta died. Our bots died even faster and were pretty much dead instantly ....... one of those cases in which they trade extremely poorly with the enemy. Thx to no op p2w crap like Missouri, Tirpitz or just any other simply op BB, I could do it even alone. -

Morten is just being considerate to not show the team screens on those instances I sucked out completely. ...... tough I learned something: Dont be a teamplayer - if they cant care for themselves just let them die (doesnt apply to any divsionmates ever ofc ^^) If you however look at his screens, you will notice some heavy kill stealing going on. I call haggs and report on that! Anyway: I call them the "Matches to get me out of that ....... thing"-games. I am starting to like the Algerie tough. I mean, its still without carry potential on avg and dies to everything like any shitty cruiser, but I also feel its a ok overall ship thats fun to play. Only thing is the long range HE spam: My aim with those shells is somehow ....... off. Like the Airdrag on the edge of her range is extremely noticeable higher than, for example, IJN or US 20 cm HE shells. On thing is certain tough: I play it over the Hipper any day. -

You got to remember: How long do you have the Atago now in your port. If its only a few days to 1-2 months - fair enough, I can see why you might be pissed, buts its nothing different from somebody doing a doubloon respec only to find out its on discount the next day. If you got the Atago for a lot of months even years and you are now complaining, then I gotta say I dont understand it. You had that ship with all its perks so long before everyone else (the ARP closure is still not that long past) got that "new" Takao. So if the ship is worth 5k to you to have in the future, consider the other 5,7 k an early adopters fee. Its not that much different to buy a ship full price when its released, compared to buy it later - but with a discount. -
....... to bad nobody wanted to bet against me. Anyway: Time to start and gather a little bit more information. Is it heavily leaning towards a manufacturer? Do you boy and girls all use the newest drivers? etc.

............ and when will we get them to do a collaboration with Hasbro? @Tuccy @Sub_Octavian @Kandly (Marvin, do you think thats enough breadcrumbs to lure them here? ) I mean look at all that majestic royalty! Highly ship-related too, if I may say so! Even soviet! (If that one doent penetrate and cause a citadel, nothing will! ) ........ be glad I am using spoilers to not outight the thread! You see, if the this game has taught me one thing, its that: Just because I can figure that one out, does not mean the rest of the playerbase will too (and I think we have a lot of read-only-users). If you want an example for that: You and why I used a polite way to convey this information on the whole matter. Live has also taught me that everyone can suddenly be dumbfound without there being something objectively difficult at hand, so is it really that hard to understand why its good customs to give a few examples when providing information? Even if you arent a teacher, you should have visited a school and therefore experienced the fact+example education first hand. Also since this are ships of a category completely of its own, I could see why WG would allow ARP captains on regular silver/premium ships (voices, weaboo whatever), but not regular captains on those special-category ships. Hell it could have been even part of the collab.-contract they signed; who knows? All these consideration win against opening the thread with: Yo, listen up you little dumb ! - dont they? Lastly: If WG would finally figure out a damn way to let us dismiss the horde of them surplus ARP captains, which they did put into my barrack ship? Preferably with transferring the xp to a single one of them ...... ( again: *I regret nothing*) -

Remember that could have had the same iq those two years ago if not for WG slack-assing ..... Hell, whatever your old grapics card was from 2+ years ago, I bet it wasnt a DX 9 one either .......... I recommend the next time you buy something from them, to use a cheque and to "post-date" (is that the right term? cant remember, long time ago) it to late 2019 ..... or 2027 for that matter. Well SLI has been "kinda" working since a while now. Without bugs and glitches however: Yeah, like "without bugs and glitches" of a "similar level as the rest of the game". How it does right now, I cant tell. Since one of my 670s died, I now run single GPU with one faster card, so I cant help you there. It "should work", and you "should be able" to use the enhance AA setting just fine however. If you experience problems, I recommend trying newest driver. And then testing backwards all the older ones in order. And if that doesnt help wait and pray for a new driver - SLI style! -
Also do a update of those if you experience problems. Its only fair from WG to assume you are running a driver from this year too ...... Another realism upgrade comrade! See, WG found some sekrit dock-uments from the soviet navy about experiments conducted in WW2: If soviet torpedoes is dropped into sea, it vanishes! Neither friend nor foe will ever see a trace of its existence again! So, its fair for WG to assume if ship gets dropped into sea, it also vanishes after battle. Might be also a preview to an upcoming economy update: Your ship got "wet on the deck and funnels" - you gotta re-buy for full price - totally realistic! ..... and well, it would be funny if not being so outrageous: Be glad your ship only vanished while supposed to be on the surface in port-view. De Ruyter vanished from the ground of the sea.
-
WG has yet to switch to DW (Direct Worldmodel) 4.3 "Heliocentric". Right now they are still using the old 3.1c "Flat" in Russia. Also, realism comrade Windowlicker! See? The blackness/darkness of space on the horizon is bound to be noticible where the layer of the Dome-Atmosphere is bound to be the thinnest (since you are so close to the edge; watch out or you might go over said edge)! Completely logical! @Aotearas Who called it? But tbh that was an easiy one.

I started the game just now in DX 11 mode ........... well and I didnt want to immediately uninstall it. Well, the 8x MSAA enhanced to 8xSGSSAA looks ......... ok tbh. Backgrounds could be a little bit calmer, but I admit, in a match having to look onto the ships on the sea, its probably ok. How stable this whole thing is? We will see; but lets just say I am all ready and set: -

Well, there is this sentence: unlock special blueprint Commemorative flags for some of the new British Battleships, allowing you to unlock the ships and get them without spending any XP or Credits! and for example this mission: Mission: Ships and Tea III Restrictions: Random battles, Cooperative battles, Ranked battles Conditions - Over any number of battles: Deal 50,000 damage to enemy battleships with ship's torpedoes Set enemy battleships on fire 10 times Rewards: Blueprint I Commemorative Flag So from what I get, you dont even need to finish the last mission in the chain, but rather the middle one (3 of 5) - and its the same for all 3 weeks. -

I actually deeply love that "but I didnt listen-face"-meme. Its just viral like the "but then I took a arrow to the knee" one. That reminds me of something: or pick one of the older 2 versions: If I remember correctly it hails from a really REALLY old (basically right after the first few episodes) old PMV of "Your gonna go far kid" (with the original lyrics, just a tad faster, I think) epicly ponified with Rainbow Dash. (I still remember that videos description; something along the lines of: "Best. Pony. EVER." ). I suppose "The Offsprings - You're gonna go far, kid was pretty" was new (1 year?) and popular at the time. Tell you something - boring text/personal stuff: Second time, I got infected, and I am sure @T0byJug will approve: This is the Space Shuttle Atlantis creating a Sonic Boom and and a Rainbow ...... a Sonic Rainboom: Back then I actually wanted to re-find that picture ..... so I searched for "Sonic Rainboom". (That one should be save for Google ). Oh boy ...... because this is also a Sonic Rainboom: Some more boring text: So here we are, all those years later, and if I ever drive you insane with those "Technicolor Diabetes Hazards" then blame it on the Space Shuttle Atlantis. Long story short : So enough "sad tales", rather: (I really must be getting old if I start story telling about the past )- 3,079 replies

Thats some pretty important information! Thx for the bringing it here! Any indication of WG using some DX 11 texture streaming or maybe the compressing/decompressing features? (Using DX 11 ≠ using any features it offers!) €: deleted the part about DX 11.x - its delusional with WG ....... (See, this is what I have been talking about. "People dont care about graphics", yeah right, but maybe loading into the game with the same hardware before the 5 minute mark would be nice, now wouldnt it?) No problem, pops, Ill try to explain. (Dont take it seriously, if anything I belong in the geriatric category too because I played 3 of the 4 following games). ;) This is the current game: There are talks an announcement about moving it to at least that techlevel: or maybe that one: (thats actually an insult to those games, because esp. Power at Sea was downright awesome for the time!) Meanwhile the real current tech standard looks like that: I hope that last game didnt give you tachycardia. ;) Now we are talking about implications, consequences and how poor or not their DX 11 implementation is. -

havaduck replied to havaduck's topic in General Discussion
Well its a long accepted truth that people react different to aliasing. (As a hint: Other people are forcing SGSSAA on Minecraft! Yes, Minecraft!) I "can" play without, but here, in this game, you pretty much (except CV obviously) spend the entire game focused on horrible edgy ships with chainsaw teeth running all around and inside them. Ofc content creators, could have designed their content in the first place to be less AA dependant (aka good content creators and content), but thats not the case in this game. But to give them credit, they are somewhat working on that now. After 5 years of development. So excuse me, Ill stop giving them shít for that in 5 years too after they have completely rectified that situation. Earliest will be 2022. Thing is, remember the original foliage hell that was Crysis 1 - even that game looks better now, and consumes less resources than WoWs with similar forced settings. But hey, its only 10 years old, and it had DX 10 from the beginning. ...... also I like the "how low can it go" approach (Ever seen the old UT 2k games on Voodoo cards? ), but this game fails there too! Even without the horrendous costs for proper AA (either have a performant good working one ingame, or dont complain when you get strapped onto your back the costs for forced one), this game consumes way to much resources for the result. Going back to Crysis 1, you could tone that one down to look like Return to Castle Wolfenstein (2001); but guess what? It also needed a graphics card of the same magnitude as RtCW (good old 9700 pro will do nicely - 2002)! So lets recap: - It consumes way to much resources in potato-mode. - It wastes already available potential for a speed-up that has been there for years! - just like your card. Thats basically a Deadly Sin right there - (Remember: No new DX 9 cards past 2006! - even PCI-E -> AGP bridge cards had DX 10.1 in ATIs case), so this means being even more horrible in potato mode. - It looks like crap on a performant rig because basic features from the last millennia are missing - and the consumption to output ratio again is bad anyway, compared to what could be run there too. - You gotta have a top notch rig and use haggs(r) to get it to look acceptable, and then we better not talk about any input output ratios there any more. Congrats, it doesnt look good or is performant for neither segment of players, high end nor potatoes. So please no BS about russian potato PCs, because its wasteful there too and fails there pretty hard too. Remember Torchlight? That one looked ..... humble. No problem with that, still a fun game - but it basically consumed no resources, so that matches. It had even an Netbook mode! And these old Atom-Netbooks with Intel-IGP were the epitome of shít! They needed an NV 8400 IGP (instead of that pos Intel licensed and then failed even on the drivers hard!) or something similar like the good ATI 4200 IGP to help the Atom decode, so you could at least watch 720p on YT without hickups and lags because it (and the Intel IGP) was such a slow pos. -

....that they didnt do it earlier. Exactly. Honestly Marvin, I get the feeling you didnt read at all. ;) WoWs should have never even released as an DX 9 game. Well, it also should have included things like AA, a working chat and ......... trees! Yeah, I remember that one, because WG "praised themselves for adding that". Trees, a "feature" I came to enjoy from the Atari 2600 and C64, and they wanted a damn medal for finally adding that. Years later: - no working chat. - trees. - still only cheat aa. ....... ..... and like I said: Their innovation (that is upcomming) will still still put them in lagging behind over a decade. Let me put it into perspective: If I think "shitty graphics that have to run on every potato PC" and then add "DX 11", I immediately think World of Warcraft. Now ask yourself: When did that game get DX 11? Could it be 2011? Or other shitty f2p games like ...... I dont know, Star Trek online have DX 11 for how long? Half a decade? Or my favourite of them all, World of Tanks: I rest my case ........ also ........ *I regret nothing*. True, very true actually. I dont even take it as aimed at me, but as a general statement, again, one which I agree with. The thing is that with 2 years "of release into the game" (I still remember the "Release Party" - WG was also "soiling us" back then already), its still in a state of not being "release worthy". Seriously, come back when you have a hinge of balance, a working chat, social features (clans, not FB ), a working UI, AA, a engine from this millennia and then we will talk about this game being "fit for release". -

@Themisto97 You have to at least visit the Scrub recruitment thread. Even if you have no interest in joining, you will feel right at home. First up: Some XP to get out of this anaemic pos that is the Ruin. Was an interesting game tough, didnt do much damage (duuuuh!), we secured our and held the caps from the enemies grasp. I mostly had the deterrent role, because cruiser counter nothing and this one is just pitiful all around + sluggish as all hell. In the end I got a dev. strike against the Ibuki after previously bouncing off/doing no damage with HE to him at range. Literally: .......... the only thing you can kill in this whole crappy game, and its another shitty cruiser - close up only ofc; and I could have done that in any T7 20 cm cruiser, maybe even the Yorck at that range. Meanwhile my WR is taking a nosedive like you wouldnt believe it. Mostly because of epic teams like this: 1. Stronk MM, both p2w T7 BBs on one side. 2. Top tier BB afkt - ofc. 3. We had barely any support on our side and pretty much still owned it - in the bottom tier T5s. See that top Scharnhorst there? We burned him down to 5k, but no one bothered shooting him to finish him off and then we had to go and leave him. Why you ask? Because all the noobs managed to do was loosing hard with superior forces. There were 4 DDs, 1 BB and 2 cruisers swimming in our cap. So a game that looked promising was "cut short" rather abruptly. Or "the same game" but in reversal: 4 pts domination, we have all of them. Like, really? I owned the enemy Clemson hard and got a few hits on the T22, but aside from that I did screw all, because I had even trouble getting in gun range of anything. You should have seen them: The moment their spawn cap started to fill up without them being able to see me, the put another 4 km between me and them ....... and I cant even stealthtorp in this thing. Its truly amazing. Final game: Yeah anything with a win and some damage in the Ruin is a cause for celebration! Lets analyze: 4 Torp hits (4 out of 4) ...... and no flooding. Seems legit. Its the same RNG I get when a Ranger goes for my NC, does 18 k with divebombers and sets 3 fires, and you have to consider whether or not to use the repair ........ because thats all BEFORE the TB go in with your now destroyed AA....... Those 4 Torps are barely able to kill half of that Iowa (less if we facture in the heal which WILL BE poped immediately) and its in a cyclon during BB-buff time. Rewards are horendous as well, because its so easy to kill a BB: You aim in their general direction and stroke yourself with the other hand ......... or was it the other way around? Winning this was actually hard. Our CV has 22 % in ~ 80 in Lexington. Thats quite something. But when you see him playing AS, not scouting, not going for the enemy planes, flying his planes over the friendly DD ........ well you can see where a WR comes from even bots fail to achieve.
