They have weak AA and are extremely important to win matches, making them perfect targets for lowtier CVs. Most teams decide to run and lose when their first DD dies after 2 minutes

Probably because I have only 26 games with Essex and most of them were with Stock-Setup? Just take a look at damage record: Essex: Taiho:

In AS- and Stock-setup they have better fighters, in Strike-setup they have much better damage potential. Spotting ability is about the same, Taiho may have more squads but there aren't enough spot-worthy ships for all these squads so it doesn't really matter. The only point where IJN clearly dominates is crosstorping DDs. But by spotting them, every US-CV can make their life hard enough as well.

ShinGetsu is absolutely right. Essex and Midway are very strong. And, just to understand it correctly, 15JG52Adler and DJ_Die are looking at his stats and think his opinion is worth less than theirs? While 15JG52Adler has just 50% winrate with his Essex and 45% with his Midway. And DJ_Die's highest CV is a shitty AS-Lexington.

I think the arc in question is only important for ships with multiple torpedo launchers. As the circle for torpedo arming distance is different for each launcher, the green arc is the lowest distance where torpedos of all launchers are surely armed. Glorious Paint Skillz: red circles = arming distance for each launcher green ellipse = ellipse made of all circles -> green arc in game But I guess the formula creating the ellipse is optimized for torpedo launchers in the middle of the ship. That results in a big difference between ellipse and real arming distance for ships with their launchers on stern like Kii (or Graf Spee which I used for verifying this assumption). The ellipse for a Shimakaze for example is pretty close to the real arming distances.

Well, since you lost this game by having all ships sunk and not by capping, I doubt the DD difference in this domination game is to blame. If that radar cruiser annoys you, spam F3 on him and sink him. And I don't see the problem with +-2 since it's the same for both teams. That's one player how doesn't mind. But there are many who prefer to get a match without much waiting.
